After being exiled from his merfolk tribe two years earlier, all merman Cassian wants to do is live out his life in the quiet seaside town of Sable Cove. Taking over for the lighthouse keeper and watching the shores for trouble keep him plenty busy and helps keep his mind off how lonely he is. When a beautiful fairy’s boat drifts into the cove, Cassian knows she’s his siren—the one female on the planet meant for him.
Nature fairy Ziarena is thankful to be rescued by the sexiest merman she’s ever met in her life, especially when she realizes he’s her true mate. When Cassian and Zia travel to her home, the danger they face is enough to bring something magical to life within Zia, but no one knows how it’s possible.
Can they figure out what Zia is, or will it remain a mystery forever?
1.5 Just barely okay. Part of the reason is not the fault of the author/publisher. Overdrive "mis-shelved" this book in romance, and since I usually filter for romance, it came up. With the word "love" on the cover, I had no reason to question the category. Merman romance? I checked it out immediately. But actually, this is NOT romance, but chick-lit, which became apparent when the romance storyline was completely settled at about 28%.
However, even as chick-lit, I didn't find much in this book to like. There is almost ZERO conflict. The jilted "ex" of the merman tries a scheme to kidnap our lovers, but it is fairly easily thwarted and one chant by some witches puts a complete stop to any further problems. Done. Over.
The girl takes her new merman bf to meet her parents and they have NO QUALMS whatsoever about the fact he is a different "species", and that there has NEVER before been a merman mated to anyone of her people (fairies), not to mention the fact that they just met and he purposely got her pregnant within like 48 hours of this highly emotional rescue-at-sea first meeting. The parents don't take any time to get to know him before her dad gives full blessing to marry without the slightest hesitation. They throw an engagement party at the fairy royal palace the next day. There is no conflict over where they're going to live, not from either of the two MCs or the parents. I kept waiting for some conflict to happen, but it never did. They don't even have a minor tussle of disagreement. Super harmonious all the way.
There is a sort of mysterious magic identity crisis, but there is no urgency to it, no danger, just kind of an interesting little bit of background. Even that is solved with very little sleuthing and no danger or difficulty. Everything about this book just comes too easily.
Nitpicks: characters hum (non-musically) an awful lot. It gets annoying. If I had to guess the ages of the MCs by dialog alone, I'd say the male protag is 19 and the female is 17. They're actually adults, but nonhuman characters anyway, so age is irrelevant, but they talk like human adolescents, IMO. Gratuitous f-bombs near the beginning. Too steamy for chick-lit IMO (too steamy for romance too, but that's just me.)
Not enough merman-related stuff either. Yes, the merman is the male main character, but it's way more about the fairy female. If it had not had mermen in the title, I never would have picked it up, so I expected more mermish stuff. Disappointing all around. I see a lot of others rated this very highly. I wonder what they saw in it?

This book was just crazy good. I have read all of RE Butler, but never a book about a merman. I was skeptical at first, but leave it to a great author to make a great romance with a merman. Not only was it extremely entertaining it had everything you need in a great romance. A lonely merman not able to be with his family by choice, if you call not wanting an arranged marriage a choice. So Cassian left and moved to the small seaside town of Sable Grove. As keeper of the lighthouse it is the perfect job. And it gets even better when he rescues Zia from a storm. Cassian and Zia, who happens to be a fairy, are fated to be together. Zia‘s family opens their hearts and home to Cassian and he finally has a new family. Now if he can only get rid of his ex arranged marriage fiancé without getting himself and his mate killed. And this book would not be complete without the other residence of Sablegrove coming to help, the witches, a vampire, a fallen angel, and a familiar that clears up a question for Zia.
I loved the story about fairies and merman read the book in one day that is how good it was, it had action suspense romance supernatural, best book ever, one tiny thing was reading the preview for must love falcons it started that it was hadlee that got caught but then it said kinsley, so which is it
A shame Cassias had to leave his village but as we see he was smart to reject his arranged bride. Finding Zia and her wonderful family more than made up for his sacrifices. As I'd a merman and a fairy aren't unusual enough it turns out Zia had recessive witch powers that flared to life when they mated.
What an enjoyable book! I really enjoyed the bit of danger and mystery. And such a surprise ending. You think Zia and Cassius have their HEA and boom sudden twist before that HEA. Good tale gor a cozy evening in.
I don't understand what's going on but I feel like I've read this book b4 2. I'm not sure when or anything. It was pretty good but it seems like she is more than it seems and none know much about how or why, etc. It's crazy that jealousy could b a problem from the past.
Can't wait to read more in this series loved the storyline and the characters so it's a well deserved five stars and I would recommend this book to everyone
OMG, this was just as good as the first book in the series. I loved the action and the romance, the characters were spot on and the love story was perfect. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
I love R.E. Butler's writing! Her heroes are worthy and her heroines, while able to stand on their own merits, become the other half of an amazing couple. Cassian sparked my interest in Must Love Familiars. While he came across as grumpy, the guy is just so lonely. Zia is sweet and kind with a wonderful family and friends, but finding Cassian takes her life happily in a new direction. There is a nasty ex to deal with, a mystery to unravel, and plenty of spicy moments that just make this one a winner for me.
