In 1956, "good girls" don't surf. Annie, apparently, isn't a good girl.

After the death of their parents, sixteen-year-old Annie finds herself thrust into the guardianship of her brother, Ted. He was her only ally during their unhappy childhood, and she followed him everywhere, including into the waves.

Now, however, Ted can't forgive Annie for the role she played in their parents' deaths. Annie finds herself in a boarding home in California while he goes off to surf in Hawaii. When Annie finally gets an invitation to visit Ted, she has only the span of Christmas break to convince him to let her stay—and surfing the big waves of the North Shore just might be the key to softening his heart.

But if Annie fails to win Ted over, she'll be shipped back to California, losing the only family she has left.
Beneath Breaking Waves is perfect for readers who love the ocean, stories of redemption, and atmospheric tales that transport them back in time.

Juliet grew up in northern California, where she spent her free time staring at spooky lakes and making up stories about the old buildings surrounding them. Years later, she still lives in California and she still makes up spooky stories…about lakes and the old buildings surrounding them. Like April in April’s Ghosts, she’s terrified of spiders and she’s obsessed with Hamilton. Like Lissa in June's Blood, she plays the piano...but not very well.

Sixteen-year-old Annie and her older brother Ted have always been best friends. Annie has looked up to and followed Ted around for most of their lives. Ted took Annie under his wing a long time ago. Whenever their lives got a little bit overwhelming Ted would take off to the beach to hit the waves and Annie, of course, would follow right behind him. Annie learned to surf using Ted’s board and eventually getting her own board even though good girls didn’t surf in 1956.

After the death of their parents as Annie’s guardian, Ted enrolls her into a boarding school in California and takes off for Hawaii to hit the waves. Annie never wanted to be left behind, stuck in a boarding school but she understood that Ted wanted to go find a place to live and a job before letting her go. But she soon learns that Ted may have plans of leaving her stuck in that boarding school. Ted said he would call her when she could come for a visit.

Annie finally receives that call that she has been waiting on from Ted telling her she could come for a visit. She was really hoping that after having time to think about it he would have changed his mind and tell her she could stay in Hawaii with him but that didn’t seem to be the case. Annie only has a short amount of time to convince Ted to let her stay in Hawaii. How is she going to convince Ted that she belongs with him, the only family she has left?

Highly Recommended!

Wow. This is a powerful book. The author’s grasp of utilizing subtle nuances to portray human emotion and to bring fictional characters to life is amazing.

This book is enjoyable, and that is the most important thing about it. It is not stuffy or pretentious. What it is is a Coming of Age book, a book dealing with the Human Condition, and most importantly of all, a book that flows so smoothly and is so well crafted, that when it ends, you are left with a desire to know how the rest of the characters lives turned out, as if these are people that you really knew, and wish they were still part you your life.

The author reveals in the acknowledgements that this work took about eight years to complete. This may be a long time, but it certainly was not time wasted. This is a well polished literary work, transcending well beyond simply the telling of a story. This is an endeavor that truly brings fictional characters to life and that addresses real world situations and makes the reader really care with a great intensity about the outcome.

I said literary work, and I do believe that is the case. This is a book that I would not be surprised to find in a literature class, and also feel it would be much at home in a writing class. This is a prime example of how it is done. To write a book of this quality goes far beyond understand the mechanics of writing. This book was written by someone with truly a gift and a talent.

A classic is defined as “judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind”. I honestly believe this book has what it takes to become a classic.

I received an Advanced Reading Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I definitely feel the reading experience was worth vastly more than my opinion.

I just finished this book about five minutes ago and I thought it was very good, well written and the characters were people my heart could feel by the end of the book. It was very realistic and I could feel the beach and the waves that were a big part of the surfing world in this book. This book made me almost feel like a teenager again which is a nice change of pace when you are in your mid sixties. The book left me with a big smile on my face and love in my heart for all of what the characters went through. If you like feel good books because they take you on a great journey, then I recommend this one.

What a talent! This is a story of the wounded hearts of a brother and sister after the loss of their parents. But they get a second chance at family when the sister moves to live with her brother and his new wife in Hawaii. Through her love of surfing the sister learns skills to help her heal and how to help her brother heal also. This author has a talent with words and tells a clear story and interesting characters. You can never go wrong ready anything by Juliet Vane. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
