Jesse McDermitt is starting a new chapter in his life. As captain of the research vessel Ambrosia, his stated mission is to study the oceans and seafloor, searching for rich oil deposits. His unstated mission is to locate and eradicate the enemies of society on behalf of Armstrong Research, a secretive organization funded by some of the wealthiest people on the planet. When word gets out about a massive drug and human trafficking cartel moving tons of illegal drugs, along with hundreds of slave laborers, out of Venezuela, Jesse is tasked with finding them at all costs. But how can one man find the traffickers amid the thousands of ships coming and going from Venezuela's ports, moving hundreds of thousands of containers every year? Can Jesse close on and engage the traffickers in time to save dozens of innocent lives?
I'm a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and now, a full time novelist. Between those careers, I've also worked as a deckhand, commercial fisherman, divemaster, taxi driver, construction manager, and truck driver. I live in the Sea Islands, near Beaufort, SC, with my wife and youngest daughter. We also have three grown children, five grand children, three dogs and a whole flock of parakeets. I grew up in Melbourne, FL and have also lived in the Florida Keys and Cozumel, MX.
I was a little disappointed with this book at first. Probably the first time I was bored during a Jesse McDermitt novel. A lot of technical boat jargon and no real action. The second half of the book was more typical McDermitt and moved quickly.
I have always loved the Jesse series. The books are a great page turner. Once you start reading you can’t stop until the end. Once you reach the end you wait in anticipation for the next book.
This book was long on developing characters and building Infrastructure but short on adventure. I felt like I was reading the newspaper account of a drug bust
This whole series of stories are just "can't put it down"-- great locations, characters, storylines-- Stinnnet does a good job keeping my interest in "fun reads"
In the 21st book chronicling the life, times, crusades and fights of Jesse McDermitt, he's making adjustments . He and his wife are now parents to a nine year old boy, he's now captain of a 199 foot yacht belonging to uber wealthy Jack Armstrong, whose foundation combines marine research with crime fighting, he has an expanded crew with new responsibilities, and the man he looked up to for years is dying.
Be advised - if you've ever lost a loved one, you'll be moved to tears. And if you've ever been witness to marriage proposals, you'll giggle. Nice touches as Jesse ages and realized he's got others to do for him. That's where Stinnett might have done a more thorough job - dealing with the transition from single/solitary to leader/group. Twenty one books of the guy being fiercely independent and in one book he's fully evolved? Could have used a little more work.
But there are the usual things that show up in McDermott stories: a fascination with weapons, military history, damsels in distress and rescued. And a promise of more to come - with a bigger boat!
I enjoyed this book. It started fairly slow compared to the original series however there were a lot of new characters to introduce along with a new ship and employer. The new cast of characters are fun to get to know and work well together. Jesse is now captain of a high tech 199 foot yacht owned by a very wealthy man who is in to crime fighting in the Caribbean against drug smugglers and slave trafficking. The second half of the book is loaded with the same type of action you expect in a Jesse book. Look forward to reading the next book
I've delayed writing this review for several days to allow my brain to put this book into the right genre. It's Adventure! Not Thriller! There! Now, I can say that I quite like the adventure part and learning about various air- and sea-craft. I just wish Stinnett included more thriller part in his stories. The ending was pretty abrupt and required an epilogue to finish things up. Oh, yes, I'll continue reading Stinnett's books and just hope for more thriller parts.
This book was like a trip on the high seas. It took this constant reader on the most thrilled filled ride up and over the highest waves of adventure filled reading yet. Just when I thought I was in the calm another wave caught me up getting to know and love new characters and saying farewell to old friends I met and loved in previous books. Wow! I highly recommend any newbiies to climb aboard and read this author . I think that you will be hooked before the first page is read.
Mr. Stinnett don't you dare stop writing Jesse McDermitt books while I'm still alive, they (each one) are one of my true joys in life! This was a thoroughly enjoyable new direction for Jesse, with new characters , a new vocation and limitless possibilities for storylines, although I enjoyed this one! I loved this book and every nuance of the new direction and further development of characters. Obviously I look forward to many more! ( A side note... why still no hats in the Ship's Store?)
This is a more mature and evolved Jesse as well as the other people in the story. Jesse still has his original character in reserve in case he needs to bring it out. The story still will grip you with the suspense and action but you can see the effort Jesse puts in to be more of a normal citizen and father for his family. He does not compromise on safety and right vs wrong and is lightening quick to protect his family and friends but you can see his priority is a little different. I look forward to more of his story in the future.
This a truely a great story. I love it when you put all my favorite characters in one book. It was a sad but moving tribute to Tank It’s sad to lose a person you like to read about but it’s really nice how it was worked into the story line. Another fantastic book Wayne three cheers I hope it sells thousands C. L. They have a awesome way of interrogation
I have read every Jesse McDermott book loved each and every one of them. This is the best. I cried along with Jesse at the death of his friend Tank. It will be interesting to see where he goes next. I already read about Charity and her bartending assignment . I am waiting to read the next chapter for her also. Thank you for putting so much life into your characters.
This is the first Jesse book that I couldn't give 5 stars. Too slow with too little action. I understand Wayne wanting to add new characters, but there was just too much talking between characters. All the other Stinnett books I have read within 2 days of starting. Not this one- it took me a week because it was soooo slow. Hopefully now that new characters are added, the next books pick up the pace.
I have read every Jesse McDermitt that Wayne Stinnett has written. As time has gone by with each book, they have gotten better and better. The characters have grown and gained depth. Jesse has changed and grown but has never lost his sense of decency and morality. His way of handling issues might not be everyone's cup of tea, but he sure knows how to take care of a problem! Waiting impatiently for the next adventure.
Another classic read by Wayne Stinnett. I had my doubts about the new settings aboard the large yacht. But it's the same Jesse with a cast of new characters around him. The story was great, the action was curtailed somewhat but was made up for by the developing new characters & the details about the new ship. If You have read all the Jesse books like I have, I highly recommend this one. Can't wait for the next one.
I've read all of the Jesse McDermitt novels to date. They get better and better with new characters being introduced, and unexpected twists and turns. I read this book in one sitting...couldn't put the bookdown, just kept reading and turning pages. Book 22 is pre-ordered...can't wait!
I'm so happy to read a new Jesse McDermott tale! He has a new, bigger ship, the Ambrosia. It's got a new, larger crew, so we get to meet new people. However, his terrific, old friends do join in. It's another big adventure with some big surprises. As always, Jesse proves how important every person is to him.
Each installment just keeps getting better. I always intend on reading only a bit each day and always go cover to cover within 24 hours and now waiting eagerly for the next installment. Wayne does a fantastic job of weaving a genuine human touch and sense of empathy into a really good adventure story.
This is a really good read. New characters are introduced and some old ones, Charity Styles, and Chyrel, COL. Stockwell and Flo are in place to add to this story. It's quite different from the Jesse McDermitt series of the past. Not on his island or even in the Keys. It's a fast read because of the tempo of events.
I'm looking forward to the next in this new series due for release on Dec. 6.
Wayne Stinnett can be counted on to produce a spellbinding read that is hard to put down. Don’t start this book thinking you’ll read at your leisure. There will be no leisure until you have finished it. Characters are true to life. The plot catches you before the first chapter is finished and keeps you guessing until the end.
When you think it's over and the plot twists friend passing families growing g new people to share your life with never ending grew into this book hard to put down...ciao for. Costa Rica keep it real in the states my heart grows heavy for the USA and it's reckless leaders...
Now is the time for all good people to come together. This book is based on that statement. Jesse, the crew and all aboard the Ambrosia are a living testament. Living a life on a research vessel should be boring and tedious. But the adventures are never dull. Enjoyed the new additions to the series.
Jesse is very decisive and justified by a moral code for justice and truth. The characters all reflect this nature. The words flow with a lot of situational awareness and extensive explanation of the technical aspects of the story. I like the technical background information personally. I will continue to be a avid Stinnett follower😎
Jesse and family, crew and friends are prepared to meet another challenge including a very sad one. Of course, I’m looking forward to the next Jesse book. What I dislike is that we are all growing older.
This is one of the best book series I have read. Very relatable characters. The follows main character Jessie , through many live changing events with friends, family and living with honor.
I have read all 21 books in this series and I can't wait for 22. In this installment Wayne did a great job of advancing the plot in a new direction and introducing new characters. The author gets better with each book.
I always read of things I never knew. Another adventure. Many emotions as tears ran down my face when Tank died. I so love your stories and feel Jesse's character just has to be real. Thank you for another great read. Can't wait until the next one
Have enjoyed every Jessie book. Wayne can't write them fast enough for me. There was some good, bad, and ugly in this one. I was in tears at one point. Hopefully there will be many more sunsets in McDermitt's future.
