Preconceived Notions

Rate this book
Rachel needs a partner she can trust to raise a child with. Scott doesn’t trust a woman with kids on the brain.

At 36, Rachel’s achieved her career goals and is now focused on two things: adopting a child and finding a partner to raise that child with. Since love and marriage haven’t happened for her after all these years of dating, it’s time for a different approach.

People—ahem, Scott—may judge her for it, but she refuses to let that stop her from looking for a decent guy who’s ready to be a father. Hooking up with a player like Scott is a complication she doesn’t have time for.

Except...she can’t seem to stay away from him and the steamy connection they have. Or that damn dimple when he smiles.

Scott knows first-hand that a woman intent on having kids will do anything to achieve her goal. Even at the expense of a marriage. Since his divorce, he’s been single. A serial dater with no interest in anything serious.

Until he can’t stop thinking about the feisty attorney who challenges him in ways no other woman has. He’s turning on the charm, but Rachel seems to be immune.

Except for that one hot night…and that other one…

Amazon bestselling author, Hayleigh Sol, believes love conquers all...

Eh, not so much.

In fact, I’ve always been a reluctant lover of romantic-comedies. The overly sappy ones just make my eyes roll; seriously, it’s like a reflex.

So, when I wrote my first book, what else would spill onto the page but a romantic-comedy with a lovably sassy female protagonist who was reluctant to give up her happy single life in exchange for a relationship?

I still write strong (even if they might not know it yet), independent heroines who don’t need a romantic relationship to be complete, and the sexy, sweet book boyfriends they find impossible to resist.

When I’m not writing or reading (my first true love), I’m hanging out with my own irresistible—I definitely tried to resist, let me tell you—book boyfriend turned hubby, who’s a big fan of “sweetie couch time”.

I know, cue the eye roll, right?

I loved the characters of Rachel and Scott. Rachel, a successful attorney, has decided she wants to foster to adopt, yet she'd still like to meet a man that she's attracted to to help raise the child. Easy peasy, yeah right. Then there is Scott. The perfunctory player who's been there done that attitude after a failed marriage with a baby crazy wife has led him into a life of non serious relationships thereafter. And therein lies the title Preconceived Notions, the main characters have so many about parenting, relationships, and each other that the book just flows right along with that theme.

Author Haleigh Sol does a great job building the couple's chemistry in creating witty banter between the pair. The dialogue is very flirty and believable. Both are truly likable and relatable. Though I will say just from my own computer problem tickets I've logged I had trouble imagining someone in IT could be sexy, funny and great at small talk but the character of Scott most definitely was.

The book is told in third person from both Scott's and Rachel's points of view. Though situations and events are often descriptive the author lets the reader use their imagination on what the pair looks like past facial expressions, Scott's adorable dimple and sexy; Rachel is beautiful with jade green eyes. The attraction is felt by the reader even without the visual.

I thoroughly enjoyed Preconceived Notions and would recommend it to those who like humor in their romance and not so much drama. There are a few steamy scenes and some profanity so if that offends you this may not be the book for you. 4.5 Stars

Note: I received an ARC (advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review).

This is the third book by Hayleigh Sol I've read, so I knew what to expect. That's not say the author follows a cooke-cutter plot. She simply lives up to my expectation for unique, contemporary characters, facing real issues with humor and determination. While there might be instant attraction, we aren't cheated out of the journey over the bumps, around the corners, through the jungle and off the cliff that not only achieves real connection but convinces us this is a love that can last. Scott and Rachel start out as very different people with opposite objectives and yet character growth brings them together in a way that is believable and satisfying. We get a good glimpse into their lives apart and together, proving they are well-rounded individuals as well as a perfect couple. The cross-over characters offer a nice reward for loyal readers. I will look forward to more from this talented author. Although this book works well as a standalone, I recommend starting at the beginning. If you like book three, no sense denying yourself books one and two!

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

The third book read by the author and I'm in love. Again.

The story: Rachel and Scott met through their best friends, Sophie and Jax. Sparks are flying, but they seem to be prejudiced towards each other. Rachel sees Scott as a player with a fear of commitment, and Scott can't understand Rachel's obsession with one serious situation. So, which one will win - love or prejudice?

Right away I liked the opening scene, how characters interacted, their humor, and sarcasm. And it just got better from there. The author pulled me into the story from the first pages and I couldn't seem to stop reading until I had something really important to do.

As usual, can't say there was anything I didn't like.

So here is the list, why I loved this book.

1. the writing. It is smooth, humorous, witty, and just generally flows easily, which makes it effortless to follow the story.

2. the story. Enemies turn lovers is one of my favorite plot developments. Though I wouldn’t say Rachel and Scott were enemies, but at times there was some enmity between them.

3. the characters. I love all the characters starting from Book 1. And it was such a pleasure to read about them here and to see them come together as one big family. I like that there are no characters introduced just for the sake of bringing someone new in, but instead, all of them play a particular role.

4. love scenes. There are not a lot of them, but they manage to show the chemistry and emotions between the main characters excellently.

5. Rachel's story. This book touched on more serious topics than previous ones, but there was no this heavy feeling of desperation when reading about them. Not to spoil the book for future readers, I would just say this - I really appreciate Rachel's story, how it developed and what she learned from it. And I 100% agree with the message her mom and Scott (surprisingly) conveyed to her.

Also, I want to mention that I laughed a lot while reading this book! So, thanks to the author for the excellent sense of humor and the entertaining bantering scenes between Scott and Rachel.

In conclusion: as I've mentioned before I loved all the books I read by this author. In her works, I am impressed by the fact that stories do not repeat themselves. There is no definite scenario according to which the story develops and only the names of the main characters change. All heroes are unique, everyone has their own character, they have different fates and problems, their own vision of life, and somehow, they all manage to interact, be friends and find love. And that is what makes the books so great for me!

This is Book 2 of the Silver Falls series and the story of Rachel and Scott.  I love how the author's use of words creates imagery that draws you into Silver Falls as if you're there and the supporting characters are wonderful.  Rachel, a career driven attorney has realized there's something missing in her life.  While she's been holding out for a man like her father, after dating a bunch of frogs, she realizes the man of her dreams may not be out there and decides to move ahead with her life goals of parenting on her own.  Who needs a prince charming? Scott is a complex character with charm.  He's been burned before and decides the bachelor lifestyle--seemingly a player--will protect his heart and who cares what everyone else thinks about him.  There are so many layers to Scott and the author slowly peels them away revealing the true Scott.  The banter between them is witty, definitely Rom-Com style and kept a smile on my face.  Their chemistry is magnetic and the storyline is original and engaging for the reader. I haven't read anything like it.  The happy for now ending was the perfect thing to tie up the loose ends.  5 star read!

This book was AMAZING!!
An astonishing story that is beautifully written. I was honestly hooked from the first few pages.
I loved everything about it from the characters to the plot. The enemies to lovers (kind of) romance and an incredible ending!
I couldn't stop myself from reading. The story is so engaging and gripping and keeps you eager to know how things will go.
The writing style is perfect, easy, and simple. the story was fast-paced and full of events. I cried and laughed so much!!
I highly recommend reading this book if you're looking for a fun romance story.

Thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is the second book I've read by this author and again, the characters and the 'realness' is what struck me. They have issues and real lives to deal with throughout the tale and it makes the characters so much more relatable and their ending all the sweeter.
I enjoyed reading about feisty Rachel and 'player' Scott and their progress through the plot as they realise all of their preconceived notions about each other are incorrect. The fact that Rachel is adopting is an interesting addition to the story and adds an element I would not usually have read about. Hayleigh Sol knows her characters well and develops them so that you get to know them too. You can't help but cheer for the ending! Thoroughly enjoyable.

If you're tired of overly dramatic romances and want a fun read, this is it. I love how Sol created a realistic heroine--I think a lot of career women can relate to the difficulties of trying to balance your desire for kids and a family with work. Rachel's goals seem doable at first, but then she starts sleeping with Scott and has a change of heart. He's leaving his own failed relationship, so pursuing a major commitment just wasn't in the cards for him.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this. I got a free copy for my honest review, and it left me wishing I could go back in time to read the first book in the series--although the second one was still quite enjoyable as a standalone book.

This is the second book in the in the Silver Falls Series but can be read as a standalone. If you've read the first book you'll recognize some of the characters. Scott and Rachel met via friends and had instant chemistry. But they have different goals. Having been burned by his first relationship he wants to keep things light and not commit to anything. She's ready to settle down and adopt a baby. She's willing to get married if she can find a guy like her dad but they don't exist. Especially Scott who's determined to continue his life as a bachelor player. She's comfortable being a single parent. But the chemistry between the two is strong and things get more complicated once they start sleeping together. Slowly they each expose more of their true selves and she continues to peel the layers off Scott. They find that they each had preconceived notions about the other. This is a great book that was well written in the third person. It told both their point of views. The book was hard to put down once I started. The characters are amazing. A great read that you will enjoy. I received this arc via Book Sirens and voluntarily chose to review it..

Intelligent and contemporary romance
This intelligent, contemporary romance starts with – what I think – is a wonderful prologue that introduces the two protagonists of the book: Rachel and Scott. Both are two of today’s modern urban people and both struggle with some of today’s top social topics. They want a quality, enduring relation and they somehow struggle with the topic of kids. I liked both characters throughout the whole book.
I have already read the former books of the Silver Falls series and liked them (note that there is a “1.5” book). This third book continues with the good traditions. It is an intelligent, modern, witty romance. It is sometimes steamy, so beware if you’re not into this. What I especially like about the author is her excellent language and careful choice of words. Even though this book is part of a series it can be read as a standalone without any problems.
If you like a quiet, not dramatic, witty contemporary romance, this one is for you.

Rachel James is a lawyer and Sophie’s best friend from the previous book “An Unexpected Find”. She doesn’t get along with Scott Riley, an IT specialist and Jax’s best friend. Since their best friends are dating, they try to make the best of it. Scott would like to be a friend with benefits, but Rachel wants to adopt a child and raise the child with a like-minded partner, with the hopes the relationship could develop into love. She’s scared to be a single mom even though her mom did an excellent job out of necessity. I enjoyed the banter between the characters. They were attracted to each other but felt they had different goals in life. There was humour which I enjoy. I loved how they got to know each other. I highly recommend this book.

Sweet book. Third in a series. Sophie’s best friend Rachel and Jax’s best friend Scott have had a frenemies relationship (introduced in “An Unexpected Find”.) Rachel is looking for a man to help her raise adopted kids, and Scott is a serial dater. Rachel has some funny dates with guys she met online, all of whom Scott has funny nicknames for. HEA.

I received this book at no charge from Book Sirens and the author, but all opinions are my own.

Preconceived Notions is the second part in Hayleigh Sol's series. The first book about Sophie and Jackson introduced us to their best friends Rachel and Scott. (The third book is available for free for subscribers of Hayleigh Sol's newsletter.) Rachel has decided she wants to adopt or foster a child and is looking for a suitable co-parent. Scott doesn't see himself as fitting that mold and Rachel sees him as a hopeless playboy, but there is no denying that they're both attracted to each other. Rachel attempts dating other people and Scott puts his feet in his mouth a couple of times too many. But is there yet a chance for them?

Preconceived Notions is pleasantly written, well edited, a lovely mix of the light and the serious, touching on the the challenges of single parenting, struggles with infertility and the trouble with timing: how to develop a budding relationship if your other life goals aren't perfectly in sync. Scott and Rachel's mother figures have some interesting things to tell them. Both Rachel and Scott have to challenge some of their preconceived notions of what they want or what life is supposed to be all about.

True to the title, Preconceived Notions is pretty predictable, as Rachel's Tinder finds are the sort of cookie cutter dating disasters you had a preconceived notion from tons of other contemporary romances, and Scott and Rachel end up having just the kinds of conversations with each other and with other people you might expect them to have in order for their relationship to develop to a partnership.

I would recommend this book for those times that you want a pleasant, effortless read, a play-it-safe book that won't shock or surprise you but that might help you feel a little empowered.

I got a review copy from Booksirens and I'm leaving a voluntary, honest review.

Fast paced rom-com that is set in present day and tackles real issues. I read this right after reading the first book where Rachel and Scott were introduced as friends of Sophie and Jackson. I believe it can be read as a standalone but the first story was great so I encourage you to read it as well.

Rachel is a successful lawyer trying to navigate the online dating scene with no luck, but with some laugh out loud oh no stories. She has decided to skip this goal and move on to her next goal and become a single parent through adoption. Scott is a commitment phobic - player who has been burned in the past and has no interest in going down that road again. From the very start the book had me in stitches. The banter between them as well as the magnetic attraction made it hard to put the book down. I actually read it in two days. The story showed both perspectives so there was no guessing as to what their preconceived notions were. It was fun to watch them work through their issues with the help of Rachel's mom giving some great advice.

Haleigh Sol is a very talented writer that creates great imagery without overdoing the vocab or word count. Her characters are likable and convincing. I will definitely be reading more of her books in the future. I am grateful for any writer that can write a series that keeps you coming back for more without being a cliffhanger.

I surprisingly liked the book. I read the Book 1 of this series (An Unexpected Find) and there was promise in that but I felt the story was a bit dragging. I kinda still felt the same way on this one, but I could relate to the characters. As I was reading, I could see people in my life in the characters that I was reading, even the disaster dates. Ugh. Would definitely recommend it to a romance genre fanatic who is looking for a new voice.

I enjoyed the story. Scott had a thick shield up leaving people to believe half truths about him to keep himself protected.

I loved seeing the relationships with all the family's and the bond between everyone. It was quite heartwarming.

The parts that I found frustrating were if Jax was Scott's best friend for so long I feel like he and Sophie would have had a better understanding of him and how he truly was. I also found Rachel's views and worries about Scott a bit hypocritical considering how she behaved.

Hayleigh Sol gives her characters such depth and complexity. Great story, I couldn't put it down! These two are so perfect for each other and have no clue how to make it work. I still can't believe this author is a full time doctor who only started writing novels during the COVID-19 shut-down. I certainly didn't do anything that productive with me time! Written with good humor, this story is about the struggles women face when the biological clock starts ticking and there´s no partner in view in the short term so they can fulfill the dream of becoming mothers. It has intrigue, romance, and many real life situations that anyone can relate. However, if you are not a reader for steamy passages do not get this story. It´s easy to read and entertaining.

I enjoyed reading this book. There was a lot of back and forth between Scott and Rachel and boy did she kiss a lot of frogs before she got her Prince. I want Beta, that cat is the best.
