Knitty Kitty Mystery #3

Hanks and a Hitman

Rate this book
Wanted: Cat mum to manage a yarn store, corral two curious cats, all the while being tangled up in murderous mayhem and mystery.

A smart woman would dump her cheating ex, move from the city, and give herself a chance for a well-deserved do-over. A smarter woman—smarter than me, anyway—wouldn’t jump out of that same frying pan and return to Cape Discovery, a seaside village where her family is the nuttiest of all the nut-ball residents.

I’m a high school counsellor turned new owner of Unraveled, my granddad’s yarn store in town. More exciting than a delivery of rainbow colored wool is the news of movie location scouts in the area, though not everyone believes all publicity is good publicity. Game on between landowners to secure such a lucrative deal.
I can’t help being caught up in movie fever, until I stumble onto one of those landowners, face down in a kitty litter tray. Deader than dead thanks to an unknown assailant. With dating disasters aplenty both online and in-real-life and a hitman on the loose, things couldn’t get much more murderously crazy in Cape Discovery. If only that were true…

Tessa Wakefield has her hands full juggling a cozy craft store, her crazy family, and two men who’d rather poke out their eyes than describe themselves as cute. Which they totally are. Cute, charismatic, and occasionally on her mind when she’s not stumbling over dead bodies and using her newfound sleuthing skills to track down murderers. Lucky she’s an excellent multi-tasker because digging beneath Cape Discovery’s surface can unearth secrets that kill.

Hanks & A Hitman by Tracey Drew
A Knitty Kitties Mystery #3

What fun…well…how can murder be fun? Well, they carry you along as you try to beat the amateur sleuth in figuring out why people were killed and who killed them. The harder it is to figure out “who done it” the better the story. Add in a bit of potential romance, some zany cats, a small town community, and a few quirky people and you have a recipe for a delightful afternoon of sleuthing!

What I liked:
* Tessa: mature, business owner, loving sister-daughter-granddaughter, good friend, inquisitive, more fun with each book
* Birdie: widow, rescues animals, cat whisperer, boards animals, has the type of establishment I believe would be fun to run.
* Kit & Pearl: sibling black cats that didn’t participate as much in this story but did make their presence known
* Harry: Tessa’s grandfather…he seems wise and what we see of him is interesting
* Getting to see the community members again
* Eric & Oliver: Not sure what will happen with them but they do provide intriguing romantic interest/potential
* Eric with his niece and nephew
* That I wasn’t sure who the killer was till almost the very end.
* Some of the unexpected twists and turns
* All of it really…except…

What I didn’t like:
* The way Dominic treated his aunt
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This one was just as good as the last two with the mystery being a bit more interesting and well, mysterious. However, the love triangle continues! Hence the rating. I just can't stand the waffling back and forth.

A Hitman

The last thing that I expected was the dead body of the nephew of a woman who was not guilty of anything.
I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Greetings Humans! Yes, this review will come from my adorable and witty kitten perspective once again. My Mommy is just here to press the buttons, but this time, she doesn't get my tail in as many knots. What a lovely, hilariously funny series this is. Yes, yes, we do read The Knitty Kitty series as a knitting pattern - knit one, skip one. We've read the first one, skipped the second one and just finished the third one. It still makes a lovely pattern though.

Tessa Wakefield still runs their family business "Unravel", a yarn shop, in Cape Discovery where eavesdropping is considered a competitive sport. Tessa still plays Mommy to Pearl and Kit while taking care of Grandpa Harry too. Pearl and Kit are two jet-black kitty siblings. Kit is a chubby, food-focused boy and Pearl is the haughty queen of the Known Universe and prone to kleptomania. Tessa still runs the Serial Knitters and the Crafting for Calmness and is the other knitting club called Happy Hookers? Why can't I remember? I've told my Mommy a gazillion times before that she needs to take better notes. Anyway, back to Tessa. I don't know if it's still fair to call Tessa an amateur sleuth. She sniffs out clues and murders almost as well as she sniffs out chocolate. This has been her third murder that she stumbled on and I believe that firmly places her in the same league as Jessica Fletcher.

Once again, Tessa finds herself in the right place at the wrong time, or the wrong place at the right time and once again she needs the broodingly handsome Detective Mana to help her unravel the yarn. Or in this case, search for a knitting needle in a stack of kitty litter.

This series truly are quite similar to landing in a basket filled with fluffy, soft balls of yarn. Yes, you are definitely going to get yourself tangled up, but getting out is just as much fun as getting in. And what's the harm when you can do that giggling at the quirky and fun writing style of Tracey Drew?

"Who needed boot camp to elevate your heart rate into the fat-burning zone when you could have a killer chase you through the woods?"

⭐⭐⭐
Hanks and a Hitman by Tracey Drew is the third book in the Knitty Kitty Mystery series, bringing plenty of humor and chaos to the cozy mystery genre. Tessa Wakefield has left her career as a high school counselor and her cheating ex behind to run Unraveled, her granddad's yarn store in Cape Discovery. She's adjusting to life in this quirky seaside village where her family might be the most eccentric of all the eccentric residents. When movie location scouts arrive in town, everyone gets caught up in the excitement, and landowners compete for the lucrative filming deal. But the celebration turns deadly when Tessa discovers one of those landowners face down in a kitty litter tray. With a hitman on the loose, dating disasters both online and in real life, and her two cats adding to the mayhem, Tessa has to juggle running her shop, dealing with her nutty family, and tracking down a killer.

The humor is the strongest element here. Drew has a light, breezy writing style that keeps things fun, and Cape Discovery is filled with colorful characters. The yarn shop setting provides a nice backdrop, and the cats add personality without being over the top. Tessa is an energetic protagonist, and her romantic entanglements add some entertainment. However, there's almost too much going on. The movie scouts, the romance, the family drama, and the murder investigation all compete for attention, making the plot feel crowded. The mystery gets a bit lost in all the other subplots. The pacing bounces around, and some scenes feel more like filler than necessary story.

A fun, lighthearted read if you enjoy humor with your mysteries and don't mind a busy plot.

This one was super cute! And I honestly had no idea whodunit until Tessa let us in on all the juicy deets in her own clumsy, unique way. Once she figured it out, all the pieces fell in place, but let's just say it's a darn good thing she's the amateur sleuth who keeps finding dead bodies all over the place and not me. I don't think I would have managed to make it out of book 1 alive, let alone book 3. ;)

Hanks and a Hitman is full of twists and turns--much like the fancy yarns Tessa sells in her shop--and I swear I'm starting to feel like all of her friends, family, and yarn store enthusiasts are my friends too. It's darn fortunate that Ms Drew only kills off the unpleasant side characters in her capers! You don't have to have read the other two (and a half) books to enjoy this one, but if you like cozy mysteries with quirky characters (have any interest in fiber crafts that's a plus but not necessary--on a side note, does anyone want to join in my petition to ask the author to share the pattern for those flesh-colored...things that Natalie kept making here?) you'll undoubtedly want to start from the first book. Just so you can get into the full will-she-or-won't-she, Eric-or-Oliver drama from the start.

I know who has my vote. And fully trust that Ms Drew won't draw that aspect of it out too long... (fingers crossed!)

A very enjoyable story, as always. Lots of twists and turns, and the odd red herring or two, and it seems that Tessa might, before the series ends, have a very happy romantic ending! I am voting for Detective Sergeant Eric Mana for the position. In this story we meet his delightful niece and nephew, Vicky and Simon. Tracey writes children extremely well, and we learn more about Eric in his interaction with them. It is amusing that both Eric and Oliver seem jealous of each other even though they both keep Tessa at arm’s length!

There is laugh-out-loud humour in this story, and it is an easy read. The cats, Pearl and Kit don’t get up to too much mayhem in this story, they don’t have any part in solving the mystery. Kit’s outing with Tessa to the Sunnyville Nursing Home is very funny, even though for Tessa the afternoon is a huge disappointment and she cannot escape fast enough!

A good edition to the series, well worth reading.

This is the 3rd book in the knitty kitty mystery and for me again a step up from "Purled and Poisoned".

Tessa is still apparently still a magnet for bodies every which does start to feel pretty implausible, but I guess that's a problem many mystery series have. The mystery itself was a good one and not going in the direction I first thought it would. The setting is still great, as is the cast of characters including the cats and the banter.

The one thing I keep not enjoying is the love triangle and Tessa's apparent total inability to decide which of the guys she is more interested in. Getting swoony over whoever she is thinking about at the moment does get a bit old and like she isn't serious about either. This smells like manufactured drama ahead and I would much have preferred one good love interest and a slowly budding romance. But that's a matter of taste of course.

In any case, this one has been a fun, light palate cleanser and I might return to this series after all.

I seriously love this series! Nothing like picking up a book and just knowing it’s going to hit all the sweet spots you expect from it. Lots of laughter, lots of twists and turns, the expected quirkiness that is all Tessa and her uncanny knack in becoming smack dab in the middle of murder investigations, and finally the total hotness of Oliver and Eric Mana. I just love the connection of all these characters and the mystery that surrounds the predicaments Tessa gets herself into. I didn’t see this one coming, this author knows how to lead you along and then smack it down in front of you like you should have seen it all along. Grandpa and the kitties are front and center, hysterical as usual, and loved Birdie and her kitty motel. Just an overall great book, finished it quickly.

I can never completely figure you the "who dun it" in this series. I come close. I always consider the culprit as a suspect, and then dismiss her/him.

I liked this cozy mystery. It kept me on my toes, trying to figure out the twists and turns. I enjoy the slight romantic aspect of the storyline. It never takes over the mystery, but it does keep teasing you.

Out of the two romantic options, I am on Team Eric. I get snarky, mildly suspicious vibes from Oliver. Maybe it is because he continues to blow hot and cold. I like that we are getting more insight into Detective Sergeant Mana.

I liked Tessa, but I was very surprised Pearl and Kit didn't make more of an appearance in this book. Maybe in the next one. Anyway, once again, Tessa solves another mystery!

Another fabulous book in A Knitty Kitties Mystery series. Tessa is once again embroiled in a murder investigation. There were plenty of reasons to want to kill the victim so there were several suspects. Plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing and turning the pages. Just when it looked like Tessa's love life was about to get interesting, things fizzled. I wish one of the guys would become the front-runner in the race to win her heart. As always, Pearl and Kit bring humor to the story. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with likable characters that keep you wondering whodunit, then read this series. You won't be disappointed.

Yarn store murder

I really enjoy these books. Tessa seems to just be a magnet to dead people. And then in her own quirky way, tries to figure out the perpetrator. And because I'm a knitter, I really love the fact that Tessa owns the yarn shop now and all the people seem to go to Knitting group to find out the latest gossip. I can hardly wait until the next book comes out. Oh and did I mention the handsome detective and the bar owner that are both trying to figure out Tessa.

Hanks and a Hitman is a great addition to the A Knitty Kitties Mystery. Like the first 2 books, it is a well written mystery with some twists and an intelligent plot. It kept me well-entertained on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Pearl and Kit definitely added to the entertainment. And what is a story without some kinda romance? The flirtation between Tessa and the 2 guys keeps the story alive and I'm definitely Team Eric.

Tessa strikes again! What a clever cozy mystery that is completely entertaining and also kept me guessing as to who might actually be the guilty person. I mean, how can a small little New Zealand town be the center of so many guilty (or possibly guilty) persons? New characters are introduced here to add to the ongoing story of Tessa and her yarn store, Unraveled. Tracey's wit makes for a fun, quirky read and I definitely feel that this story has many twists and turns that should be entertaining to read.

I received an advanced readers copy of this story in exchange for my honest opinion and definitely enjoyed the book.

Hope ....

There's one more! Given how much I didn't really like the first of this series, I'm surprised to find myself hoping for one more. The characters have grown up, especially Tessa. This plot thickened, and the addition of some new ones made the whole thing more interesting. All in all, a good time was had by all. Thank you, Ms. Drew. I'll look forward to reading more of your work!

Love her books so much! You don't HAVE to read the books in order but it sure does help.

Each book builds on previous information as well as developing relationships. Reading the books in order helps develop a fuller picture of this town and its residents.

I love the change ending in this book from the last 2 and I am excited to see what the next one holds.

If you love kitties knitting/crocheting and a fun mystery I definitely recommend these books!!!

These cozy mysteries were great fun to read. I enjoyed the stories, characters, and eagerly devoured all 4 books in the series. Of course there was the added benefit of the kitties that played important roles in the stories, but as cat's, not as personified animals playing the role of investigators. Which is a find premise as well, but not provided in these book.

Certainly worth the time to read. So read and enjoy.

Yarn, cats, good looking men, murder

Who could ask for anything more? Set in New Zealand, this series is enjoyable. This installment could have featured Kit and Purl a bit more, not to mention more yarn/shop interaction, but the good looking men in Tessa's world did make for an interesting read.

Good Read

I enjoyed the first book and this one was even better. The only annoyance I had with this book too many long details in certain parts of the story. Dominic was so shady so was April.
Two love interests Oliver and Eric. There was some twist and turns but will have you binge reading. Too many suspects just like I like my mysteries . On to book three. I recommend this series.

Entertaining

This is an entertaining book. The humor was refreshing even though the subject of the plot is very serious. I enjoy the playfulness between the main character and the two potential romantic interests. I look forward to further reading to see what adventures lie ahead and what direction the romance takes.

Another very enjoyable addition to the series. The banter and internal dialogue are quite fun. The characters are getting more fleshed out with time and their interactions are a good part of what makes these stories fun.

The mystery was also enjoyable. The fact that our armature detective is not a completely stupid and bumbling is a nice departure from too many books in this genre.

Out of the three I have read from this series thus far, this one wasn’t my favorite, but it was still enjoyable. I have to say that I am pretty invested in this series, and I just enjoyed seeing Tessa solve the crimes, deal with her two love interests and interacting with the people from the town. Of coarse, I can’t forgot about those cats that bring a lot of humor to balance out the murder.

What a mystery! I have rarely been so right and so wrong about the murder in one book.

Tracey‘s writing was like always great. The characters were relatable (except for the bad person) and we got some more development in Tessa‘s life besides her sleuthing.

Love all of the characters

Tessa is a wonderful character, I just wish she were real, so we could be friends. Pulling for both men in her life, not sure which one I want to win. Birdie, is a great new side character. All of the characters are growing.

I’ve been listening to the audiobooks of this series and love them. They make me laugh and giggle.
I do wish she would chose who she wants to be with. The love triangle is getting a little blah. But not enough to take away a star!

I read this book in a little over two hours, as with it's predecessors it's cute, the murder mystery isn't that great, and the love triangle that's more like a crush triangle has gone absolutely nowhere in the three books I've read.

Entertaining cozy mysteries, takes place in part at the protagonist's yarn store so there's talk of knitting and crocheting, but that doesn't get in the way of the story. Two possible romantic interests thicken the plot.

Quite enjoyed the third installment of this cozy mystery series—knitting, cats, and murder—what’s not to like? Though I’m starting to wonder—do most cozy mysteries involve two potential love interests for the amateur sleuth? Perhaps a bit more violent than I expected, but on to the fourth!
