Seaside Knitters Society #5

A Dark and Snowy Night

Rate this book
The Christmas trees are up, the Seaside Knitters are crafting warm and beautiful gifts for the holidays, and friends and families are gathering in picturesque Sea Harbor, Massachusetts—a place where traditions run deep, but so do some treacherous family secrets . . .

Winter in Sea Harbor is a feast for the senses—crackling bonfires, the scent of snow in the salty air, carols ringing out on the village green. This year, the Seaside Knitters have a sackful of obligations in addition to their usual Christmas preparations. Izzy is so overloaded with knitting classes that she hires an extra salesperson, but the new addition has trouble fitting into the yarn shop’s holiday spirit. Cass, juggling the stresses of running her lobster fishery, has finally found a nanny for her active toddler. Molly Flanigan seems practically perfect in every way—until she suddenly disappears, taking Cass’s beloved rescue mutt with her . . .

Meanwhile, the holidays are kicking off in style at Mayor Beatrice Scaglia’s holiday party, where a well-dressed crowd admires the mayor’s sumptuous new home and the celebrity chef catering the event. An additional treat for Ben and Nell Endicott at the festive affair is reconnecting with a dear college friend, Oliver Bishop. But it’s not just reunions and the appetizers that are to-die-for. Before the party-goers can toast the beginning of Sea Harbor’s festive season, the chef—and young wife of the Endicott’s old Harvard friend—is found dead beneath the mistletoe . . .

Izzy, Birdie, Nell, and Cass must uncover the pattern to these mysteries to remove suspicion from those they love, bring a murderer to justice—and keep Sea Harbor’s holiday magic from vanishing into the chill winter air . . .

I picked this book up initially because of the beautiful cover and also because I liked reading cozy mysteries. This is an author I hadn't read anything by yet, and although this is the sixteenth book in the series, this is the first one for me. No matter, it was easy to jump into and follow without having read any of the others.

I enjoyed the group of characters that make up the Seaside Knitters. It seems their knitting skills can help knit the clues of a mystery together. The group is made up of Nell, Cass, Izzy, and Birdie - all likable characters. They were warm, friendly, and supportive of one another. The circumstances surrounding the murder were intriguing and the Seaside Knitters worriedly knitting together the clues was fun to follow.

Thanks to Kensington Books through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on September 27, 2022.

I enjoyed A Dark and Snowy Night. I have read the author's series from the beginning. Because of this I have come to love the four main characters. Birdie Favazza, Cass Halloran Brandley, Izzy Perry and Neil Endicott. Their friendship is very special which the reader will enjoy throughout the story. There are two parts to this story which intertwine. Mollie, Cass's nanny and her back history as well as who killed Lydia and why.

Neil meets an old college friend, Ollie Bishop at the restaurant,, Ocean Edge for drinks. He is in town as his new wife, Lydia Carson is catering the mayor's Christmas party. Cass and her husband, Danny live on Harbor Road next to Luna Risso who has called the police about a peeping tom. Their nanny Mollie suddenly leaves without explanation when she realizes who the the peeping tom person is leaving Cass and Danny confused as they thought she loved working for them.

There is a snow storm the night of the mayor's Christmas party which they all attend. The food is exceptional.
Ollie introduces Lydia to Neil and her friends. There seems tp be much tension with some of the guests and between some of the catering team, Lydia was the guardian of Dirk Evans and has a strained relationship with. him. Darci Lou Fox is crazy about Dirk and follows him everywhere. When looking for Lydia Neil discovers her in the snow. dead. The next day Mollie returns to to Cass and Danny's house and tells them why she left but she hope they will take her back as their nanny.

The story picks up showing Neil and her friends that things are not what they seem to be, especially with Ollie and his relationship with his wife, The reader is taken to the climax of the surprising ending.

I look forward to the next book in this series and what adventures await Neil, Birdie, Cass and Izzy. I feel like they are all friends. I think the readers who read this story will want to read the other books in this series

⭐⭐⭐⭐ -- Cute cover on this one!

I really ended up enjoyed this one a lot. It took a bit to get into, as the first 30%ish I found a bit confusing. A lot of different characters and POVS. Of course, I chalk that up to not having read any of the previous 15 books in this series. 😂 However, this still held up pretty well as a standalone. Once the murder takes place I was all in and loved the rest of the book. The mystery was well laid out and kept me guessing. It was suitibly festive. The characters were all likable, and as a bonus we get some knitting instructions and a yummy sounding recipe!

Nell, Izzy, Birdie, and Cass are friends--the seaside knitters-- who live in a village in New England. The mayor is holding a fancy holiday party and has brought in a well-known chef from New York, who also happens to be married to Nell's college friend, Ollie. There is a murder at the event, and there seem to be a number of suspects. The best part of the book is the warmth and friendship of the women, and many of the village residents. There are descriptions of delicious sounding meals by the fire, snow, and knitting shop camaraderie. As an avid knitter and mystery reader, I'm surprised I hadn't read any of the previous books in the series; I definitely want to read more. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Everyone should have a closeknit group of friends and this multigenerational group is the perfect example of just that! I love that the books put the stories together by viewing aspects of the case through the different eyes and perspectives of the core group of friends. Add in great food, lots of yarn activities, daily life and love and you have the perfect recipe for a wonderful afternoon submerged in this seaside town. In this case, an old friend of Nell's has come for a visit and has found himself embroiled in a murder investigation, but will one of the town's beloved members be found guilty of murder or is someone more sinister behind the mysterious events! I love how the mystery is woven throughout the daily lives of each character with each part equaling one incredible story! I can't wait to get back and visit this group of ladies and their families again soon!

The “Seaside Knitters Society” series has been a fan favorite since it started, and the latest addition, A Dark and Snowy Night, continues to hold readers' attention. When a celebrity chef is murdered and Cass’ nanny disappears, you can’t help but wonder if the two events are related. But how can they be? With Christmas around the corner, there is no time to investigate a murder and an unlikely disappearance, but the Seaside Knitters add it to their “things to do” list.

All of the characters in this series are great. Every one of them brings fun and excitement to the story. Cass and Izzy never fail to make readers happy, and this time around, they also bring an element of intrigue and mystery to add to the murder. The celebrity chef is married to an old friend of Nell’s, Oliver. She is happy to be in contact with him again, but unfortunately, Oliver doesn’t have the best luck keeping his wives alive. The nanny disappearing is also a concern for everyone. The location is beautifully described and makes you want to spend the holidays by a cozy fire in Sea Habor.

When the celebrity chef is killed, the mayor’s house is full of guests, making finding a suspect difficult; anyone could be the killer. But following the clues will lead readers down a path of ambition, power, and relationships that aren’t always what they seem. When the nanny takes off after a peeping tom spies on Birdie and takes Cass’ rescue dog with her, the group of friends are worried and fears the worse. Everyone has secrets, but some secrets need to be revealed to find a killer. And that is what the Seaside Knitters set out to accomplish.

The reveal of the killer's identity isn’t surprising, but the motive at first might be elusive for some readers. The killing of the celebrity chef was easy to anticipate, but the disappearance of Cass’ nanny is unexpected. It doesn’t take long for readers to understand what is going on or who the killer is as long as they pay close attention to the details. Of course, the Seaside Knitters find answers to all the questions posed throughout the book, making A Dark and Snowy Night a delightful addition to the series and a fun holiday read.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am delighted to be back in Sea Harbor with Izzy, Nell, Birdie, and Cass just in time for the holidays and a big party at the mayor’s new house. The Seaside Knitters have been busy but a holiday party may just be what they need. Nell and Ben are excited because the celebrity chef catering the party is married to their old college friend Oliver Bishop. The food is delicious and catching up with their old friend is fun until the dark and snowy night turns to murder. The celebrity chef won’t be ringing in the new year. Nell finds the woman’s body buried in a snow drift with what she assumes is the murder weapon nearby.

If that isn’t enough excitement there is an “ogler” peeping into windows and Cass’s new nanny has disappeared and taken the family dog with her.

It is time for the Seaside Knitters to knit and purl the clues together to unmask the ogler, find the nanny and the dog, and catch a killer before everyone’s Christmas is ruined.

I selfishly held this book to read the week of Christmas because the characters in this story always give me the heartwarming feels that their friendships provide. No matter what is going on these ladies have each other’s back. They lend a listening ear, a hearty hug, and then leap into action if necessary. The men in their lives are the same, always ready with a helping hand or some notes of wisdom. Their weekly gatherings at Ben and Nell’s for fantastic food and fellowship always make me wish I could be right there with them.

I loved meeting Luna. She is a woman with many layers who reveals her true self over the course of the story. It is the introduction of characters like her that keep this series fresh for 16 books. I hope we see Luna again in future stories.

The mystery was complicated but if readers catch all the clues the killer will be revealed to them before it unfolds on the pages. I really enjoyed the way the author mixes the mystery with daily everyday life. The ladies may be knitting but all the drama around them is never far from their thoughts. And when all the mysteries are solved everyone gathers for a meal to rehash the case and answer any questions anyone, including those reading the book, may have.

Ms. Goldenbaum’s writing style is detailed and her stories unfold at a very comfortable place. My only issue is when I turn the last page it always seems too soon. I am never ready to leave Sea Harbor and the delightful scenes and its friendly residents.

A Dark and Snowy Night is a wonderful addition to this series. Until next year . . . . . .

A Dark and Snowy Night is the 16th book in the Seaside Knitters Society Mystery series and my second.

The Seaside Knitters Society, Nell, Cassie, Birdie and Izzy, are friends in Sea Harbor, Massachusetts. The main characters in this novel are mum and co-owner of the Halloran Lobster Company, Cassie Halloran, and Izzy Perry, mother of a toddler and current owner of the Sea Harbor Yarn Studio. Nell Endicott is Izzy's aunt and a retired company director and Birdie Favazza is an octogenarian. When a body, a renowned chef, is found in the snow at the Mayor's invitation-only Christmas party, the Seaside Knitters search for answers.

Although I have not yet read most of this series, I had no difficulties keeping up with characters and events and it worked for me as an individual story. The four women have a brilliant friendship and the great cast of characters, including the townsfolk, and strong friendship bonds, helped to zhoosh up this winter cozy. I was sold on this compulsive story from the very beginning, and Sally Goldenbaum really impresses me with her fluid writing. The details of the plot were very well-executed, the story was fun and every chapter left me with a compelling need to read on. This was an intriguing yarn, the elements of a good mystery - red herrings and measured pacing –skillfully applied to a community of delightful characters, thus creating a captivating tale until the very end.

It was a very good cozy and I am looking forward to reading book 17, as well as the others from the series. If you adore a great cozy mystery, don't miss out on A Dark and Snowy Night!

I love the cover of this newest addition to the series by Sally Goldenbaum.
I've come to love all the wonderful characters in this series and every time I pick up a book, I feel like I'm visiting with good friends.
This holiday themed cozy has Nell catching up with an old friend, Cass finding a nanny for her baby, and Izzy working hard to keep up with the holiday rush of customers.
An untimely death shakes the friends up, putting a damper on their holiday festivities, and has them once again wrapped up in a murder investigation.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Meh ...
It was too many characters introduced too quickly for me too keep up with. But, in the author's defense, when I borrowed this book from the library, I was under the impression that it was the first book in the series. Now I realize it's the last book in the series. No wonder. LOL! Maybe I should start back at the beginning.

This one is as much about family and friends and the ties that bind them together, as solving a murder. Although it took me awhile to get into the story, that was what kept me reading. I found myself liking the characters, even when I had to keep flipping back to confirm who they were and how they were connected. I'm honestly not sure if that is because I am new to this series, quite frankly the author did an excellent job filling in the background, but the changing points of view confused me somewhat initially. After getting to know them, however, the final reveal was both satisfying and sad.

Although, as noted, this was my first visit to the Seaside Knitters Society, the memories and ties that bound the friends together are strong. They genuinely care about each other and their extended families. They are delighted to reconnect with Oliver/Ollie and his celebrity chef wife, Lidia. Thus, even though they barely knew her, Lidia's murder is upsetting and unbalances their world. Toss in a peeping Tom next door to Cass' home and the sudden disappearance of her Mary Poppins like nanny, Molly, along with her beloved senior rescue dog, and Cass is even more off-balance. Then, just as suddenly, Old Dog is back and Molly reappears the morning after the murder.

Is there some connection there? Molly's friend Shannon, who worked the party that Lidia was there to prepare the food for, had nothing good to say about one of the kitchen workers. Why has Oliver been so vague when it comes to sharing not just Lidia's background but what she was really like? Secrets? Could Lidia's plan to buy a popular restaurant and then tear it down to replace it with her own design be connected? How does this all connect to Lidia's murder, or does it? Will the murder be solved in time for everyone to enjoy Christmas? Who....oh, never mind. No more teases. Read the book.

Thanks #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for inviting me over to check out the Seaside Knitters Society. Even if it took me awhile to warm up to them, I liked them and will be back.

It's always super enjoyable to join this group of four friends who're basically like sisters of various ages. I love how they gather to talk about the case at hand and compare sleuthing notes while they're knitting or talking. Their guys are pretty incredible too, and I love Cass's description of having Ben, a retired lawyer by your side if you need to talk to the police (probably not the exact quote): "It's like taking your favorite teddy bear to the principal's office."

The more I got into the book, I had a feeling I knew whodunit and was right. Toward the end with more clues coming together was when I guessed what else was going on in a couple of mixed-up people's lives. Izzy's a real champ at calling and getting info from people, lol.

The side story with town curmudgeon-but-brought-cookies lady Luna was really good! She was one lady you didn't wanna cross, yet she had some incredible patience going on with new knitters or just anyone who needed her. She was one of those surprising and interesting characters that crop up in books sometimes. I wouldn't mind her popping in again--she's a real character!

As sideways as the showdown could've gone, at least it didn't and Nell was able to calmly talk with the involved. I love how everything's always explained over fellowship and food and the end! It's like their supreme reward for having another killer put away. I always leave one of these books wishing I didn't have to and with the proverbial book hangover. Don't miss its release on September 27! When there's not a murder in Sea Harbor, it's pretty darn magical at Christmastime!

Ahhh, Christmas, snowy scenes, festive parties ... dead bodies!

Sea Harbor is just the right size for most people to be on at least nodding terms with the other residents of the small coastal town. It is also home to Birdie, Nell, Izzy and Cass, close friends, unwilling sleuths, collectively known as the Seaside Knitters.

Ollie Bishop has been friends with Nell Endicott since college. Married to her best friend, Maddie, she hasn't seen him since he was widowed but he is in town with his new wife, Lidia, who is catering the mayor's Christmas party. Lidia is a go-getter who has plans for Sea Harbor she doesn't have universal acceptance but is pretty close.

For the first time the Mayor's Christmas party is by invitation only, causing irritation for both those included and left out. The mayor's new house is beautiful, the wine flows, the celebrity chef's food is sublime and the four friends are enjoying themselves until a body is discovered in the snow, changing the mood for everyone.

This is the fifth outing for the Seaside Knitters and I enjoyed reading about the four main protagonists and their families. The murder investigation is quite low key, there are no run ins with local law enforcement or underlying danger to those involved, instead the book centres around the friendships, community spirit and talking things through.

I have to admit I worked it all out quite quickly but still enjoyed reading what is my first Christmas book of the year! There is a knitting pattern alongside a festive recipe at the end of the book which was nice.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I enjoyed this festive read and recommend it as an easy read for a busy season.

A Dark And Snowy Night is the sixteenth book in the
Seaside Knitters Society Mystery series by Sally Goldenbaum.

Nell and Ben meet with Oliver Bishop, whom they haven’t seen in twelve years, at his wife Maddie’s funeral. Maddie was Nell’s BFF when they were all in college. Oliver’s young wife, Lidia, a renowned chef in her own right, is also in town. Lidia is in town to prepare the food for Sea Harbor Mayor Beatrice Scaglia’s Christmas party.

Cass and Danny Brandly have a baby, Joey, who is the perfect nanny for Molly Flanigan. Molly is very responsible for Joey and is a great cook. One night, there is a peeping-tom next door to Cass’s home. The following day Molly is gone, with no explanation.

A snowstorm started the night of the Christmas party, but not enough to keep anyone away from the festivities. The food was beyond belief, but it was well received. Nell went to talk with Lidia, but she was in a heated discussion with Dirk Evan, a staff member. Later, Nell looks for Lidia again, and she finds her, but someone has murdered her.

Once again, the Seaside Knitters will have a murder to investigate. They will find no shortage of suspects. Oliver will come under their scrutiny, as well Dirk. Lidia had riled a few locals when she tried to get support to buy Don and Rachel’s Ocean Edge Restaurant. Lidia wants to tear it down and build a glass monstrosity.

It’s always enjoyable to visit Sea Harbor. The book is well-written and told. The author does a beautiful job describing the town and its residents. Most of the regular characters are back, well-developed, believable, and enjoyable. The book moves at an even pace.

The book also includes instructions for a broken rib cowl and a delicious-sounding recipe.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

"A Dark and Snowy Night (Seaside Knitters Society Mystery #16)" by Sally Goldenbaum is a tiny bit Christmas themed. It was more focused on the mystery bit barely hinted at what time of year it was other than lots of shopping was happening at one the main character's stores. There were multiple view points the book is told from, which sometimes took a few paragraphs to figure out had changed. This may also be why it was able to be fairly standalone as I didn't get the sense of having missed things from past books or that I was really attaching to any particular character either.

The mystery part was interesting. I felt I was figuring things out just a little ahead of the characters. Again, the multiple view points didn't totally give for a consistent thought process to follow which was probably part of trying to throw off the reader.

It was an interesting story with good characters and each chapter focused on a different main character and their reaction to what was going on. You good see on the characters interacted with each other. A good plot with the person being murdered near the beginning but since this person was an out of towner and this was taking place in a small community it took a little longer to find out who had killed her. I had an idea early on. But still a good read for a snow day.

This story jumps around a lot. I didn't like that there were so many narrators. I hope the next book has fewer narrators again. The story involves a party, a fight, and a murder. I wasn't surprised by the who or the why. I was surprised by some of the relationships between the characters.

When I read this series I always wish I had this cadre of good friends around me, especially the ones that know how to cook. One of Nell's college friends comes to Sea Harbor with his new wife, celebrity chef Lidia Carson for a fantastic dinner hosted by Mayor Scaglia. When someone is found dead in a snowbank, the knitter friends search for the killer. Love this series. If only I could knit by osmosis.

My rating: 2 of 5 stars, it was okay.

Book 16 in the series.

As a knitter, I have been a fan of this series from the beginning. I just had a hard time connecting with this one. The character list felt a bit bloated and the constant POV switches kept me off kilter. I found myself having to re-read chunks to figure out who was talking or being talked about. I also found myself switching to read something else fairly often. I got there in the end, but it certainly wasn't the most enjoyable of the series.

I do enjoy the regular Seaside Knitters and the setting, so I will continue to read the series. Fans of the series should still read it, new readers would be better off starting from the beginning.

In this episode of the Seaside Knitters series, everyone is invited to a holiday party where they find a celebrity chef murdered. Because she was the wife of one of Nell's old friends, the group begins to investigate. In addition, Cass' nanny has disappeared. Is there a connection? I like this series because the women in the group are each strong but unique women. For instance, Cass owns a lobster fishing company and is the mother of a toddler. There seemed to be just a bit less focus on the knitting aspect in this book, but still it held my interest. I also missed the shop cat--wish there'd been a little more of her in the story. But, overall, it was an entertaining read with lots of New England ambience.

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Sally Goldenbaum’s Seaside Knitters Society series is one of my top favorite cozy mystery series of all time, so I was thrilled to read an advanced copy of A Dark and Snowy Night. I’ve been reading this series since it first came out years ago, so I’ve enjoyed how the friendships have grown into rich and fulfilling relationships over time.

Sea Harbor, Massachusetts is a magical place, even if it only exists in books. It’s a place I want to build a life, become a part of the town, join the Seaside Knitters as they knit their lives, and those of their neighbors, together. The author has such a talent for bringing the community to life, one can almost smell the fresh sea air, feel the cold nipping at one’s nose, smell the delectable scents of Nell’s cooking, and taste the lobster fresh from Cass’ boats.

Ms. Goldenbaum has an extraordinary talent for knitting plots together to form a cohesive story, one that keeps me in place until the very end. Red herrings are skillfully woven into the fabric of the story. In this particular book, I was completely taken aback at the end to discover who the murderer was.

The mystery in this book is intriguing - Cass and her husband have finally found the perfect nanny in Molly Flanagan. Molly has settled into life in Sea Harbor until a Peeping Tom next door scares her into disappearing with no trace. Nell and Ben Endicott’s old college friend Oliver arrives in town with his new younger wife, Lidia, who is the celebrity guest chef catering the Mayor’s holiday party. A heavy snow is falling the night of the party, and it ends up covering up the murdered body of the now-dead chef. The whole town is frightened with a murderer on the loose, and they’re on the verge of losing their Christmas spirit. Nell, Birdie, Cass, and Izzy delve into old secrets to figure out why Molly disappeared and Chef Lidia was murdered.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for letting me read this wonderful addition to the series. I’m happy to leave my thoughts and opinions on this book.

A Dark and Snowy Night by Sally Goldenbaum is a great seasonal cozy mystery that captures the holiday spirit while delivering a solid whodunit for fans of the Seaside Knitters series. It's Christmas in Sea Harbor, Massachusetts, and the Seaside Knitters are busier than ever. Izzy's swamped with knitting classes and hires extra help who doesn't quite fit in. Cass finally finds the perfect nanny for her toddler, Molly Flanigan, until Molly suddenly disappears with Cass's beloved rescue dog. Meanwhile, Mayor Beatrice Scaglia throws a lavish holiday party showcasing her new home and a celebrity chef. When the chef (who happens to be married to Nell and Ben's old college friend Oliver Bishop) is found dead beneath the mistletoe, the knitters must figure out what happened before suspicion falls on the wrong people.

Goldenbaum does an excellent job with the holiday atmosphere. You can practically smell the snow and hear the Christmas carols. The multiple storylines (Izzy's difficult new employee, the missing nanny, and the murder) keep things interesting, though at times it feels like there's almost too much going on. The knitting circle remains the heart of the series, and their friendship feels genuine.

The mystery itself is decent, with enough suspects to keep you guessing. I figured out pieces of it before the reveal, but not everything. My main issue is that with so many plot threads, some feel rushed or don't get the attention they deserve.

Perfect winter read when you want something cozy with a side of murder.
