In the midst of humanity’s greatest fight for survival, old rivalries threaten to pull allies apart in a rush for rumored alien tech.

Wow, this went downhill really, really fast.

I was cautiously positive after reading Sentenced to War and Children of Angels, the two first books in this series, but with this third book the series pretty much tanked for me.

Rev & Co continues the fight against the Centaurs but gradually political bullshit starts to creep in to the series. To the extent that the useless bureaucrats, pencil pushers and political asshats gets Rev arrested for treason. Then follows some boring and frustrating legal and political asshatery which really annoyed me.

When Rev is finally back in action it is not because these asshats were refuted but because they have no choice.

Fast forward to the end of the book which ends in a “conclusion” to the Centaur war which, again to me, was just: You got to be fucking kidding me? Obviously I did not like it all.

Sure there is plenty of decent action in the book although it is marine ground-pounder action which is not my favorite and, to be honest, Rev himself is not really that charismatic.

So the book ending with a really shitty ending and taking a nosedive into the realm of political shenanigans is really a show-stopper for me. In addition, when reading the blurbs for the coming books, I have the distinct impression that the series is going to continue down that sordid path.

So, not so long story even shorter, I’m ditching this series.

Well, the third book of this series is here and I was looking forward to it. And, for the most part, I wasn't disappointed. Oh, there are some places in the book that I though were down-right not very good, but overall, I did like the story. As you are aware, Corporal Reverent Pelletier, Union Marine Corps, is an experimental Marine. Well, that is, his IBHU (Integrated Bionic Hopological Unit), hanging off his left shoulder is experimental until it isn't. Rev just happens to be the carrier of this weapon system in place of his normal biological are that got blown off during the Children of Angels action. He's getting used to it and they are still tinkering with the way it and he works with other Marines in his unit, but things are working out. Rev even got promoted or now he's a Sergeant, but he's not in the same place as he used to be.

No, while he was a Element Leader, they've now decided that he's too valuable to put out there leading other Marines when he's supposed to be the heavy fire support for his entire platoon. So now he's been pulled back to the center of any tactical formation while Sergeant Tomiko takes over his Element. Still, he's been told and knows he's something special although he doesn't feel like it all the time. Yet, he knows he can save a lot of Marines if they meet up with the Tin-asses since his IBHU was designed to kill the things.  So, he and his Marines need a mission so they can go out and kill as many as possible in the shortest amount of time. Simple as that, but then nothing every is really simple.

Ever since somebody leaked the word the the Union might have an actual Centurian  body or DNA that they have been looking at and not sharing with the other nations, the supposedly friendly allies haven't been so friendly any more. The Frisian Mantle were the most recent ally that Rev and his Marines had fought beside. Yet, not it seemed that the humans wanted to fight among themselves instead of fighting the Centaurs.  This next mission was apparently going to challenge those alliances and hopefully they wouldn't break and have everybody fighting everybody else and the Centaurs!

Word got out that the Centaurs had positioned a base inside the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy and that was too much of a target to ignore. So, the Union was going to send in the Marines and attempt to capture any and all artifacts they could.  This, it was hoped, would lead to some advance technology for the Union. Well, the Frisian's were thinking the same thing, so they were sending in their soldiers. It was thought that the first ones inside the hollowed out asteroid would win the prize. The Union expected those first ones there to be their Marines and didn't really care who got in after as long as the Union got all the good stuff out first.

Well, it just so happened that Rev's platoon drew the short straw on entering the tunnel to the middle of the asteroid where there appeared to be a Centaur warehouse. Since it was expected this place would obviously be heavily guarded by Tin-asses, Rev was going to have to go in with the first group. Well, that's what happens, but he and his squad mates meet up with some Frisians who were also determined to get to the warehouse first. Fortunately, Rev didn't go in guns blazing or he and his Marines might have gotten killed immediately. So, he took it upon himself to form an agreement with the Frisians so they could both peacefully enter the warehouse and share what was there!  Well, this pissed a lot of people off back at Council of Humanity!  They were screaming that Sergeant Reverent Pelletier had no right and no authority to do any of what he did, but they might be stuck with the agreement he made. This means Rev was in some pretty deep kimchi!

And that's the first thing that I didn't like about the story. It wouldn't have gone down this way at all. For two allies who have been barely hanging on against a common enemy, they are not going to become hostile to each other over some supposed artifacts which they had no idea would even be worth anything. They expected Sergeant Pelletier to just kill the Frisians and claim the stash which would not have done anyone any good.  But he did just the opposite and there were some mad people in high places. Rev and his Sergeant, and his Lt were all arrested and imprisoned for an undermined time. When the Marine Corps finally got them out, they had to face to some pretty serious penalties. Rev was reduced by to a Corporal, his Sergeant was reduced down a grade and moved into an admin billet and the Lt. was reduced to a Private and put right back into the unit she once led. That would never, ever happen in my opinion.  But that's the way the story goes.

You'll read more about other missions Rev has to go one and then some missions where the Centaurs bring the war very close to home. All this time, the one thing that is still with Rev is his best friend Sergeant Tomiko. She has been by his side like glue, but he's just too much of a blockhead to understand the kind for relationship she wants and can give him. Then he goes and does something absolutely stupid at the end of this book. I have no idea why the author wrote it out this way other than they wanted a reaction from their readers. Well they got one. I don't like the ending to this book. But, that means I will read the next one when it comes out to see if they can straighten idiot Reverent Pelletier.

Easy Read, Too Many Plots, Nagging Inconsistencies

I've read, skimmed a little bit, the entire series. I've read two other series by the first author - Chaney, and other series by him that I started and stopped. Like many, probably most, authors who write a ‘good’ series, the first book is good with the second also good or at least decent. Then the storylines, plots or characters start veering in the wrong direction, latter series books ends up fair at best. My opinion for this series, book one was good, two was fairish and this took a 45 deg drop.

For starters, the authors went bananas by throwing in new subplots every 40-50 pages. Instead of focusing and staying with a main plot with a couple of subplots, per usual, authors kept starting and finishing subplots. It wasn't well done, finishing a lot of these micro plots unsatisfactorily. IE, MC’s battle buddy was given an ‘order’, didn't comply. We, reader, never got resolution to what could have been a possible good storyline. One of few+.

Whether a nit or whatever, a lot of inconsistency on the Military side. Yes, authors throw easter eggs, wink-winks out there -- range 401 (USMC range at Combined Arms base), red bands or red patch -- whatever, USMC unit called Shore Party w red leg patches that coordinates logistics (mostly air related like HST tms). The new Lifer in charge gig, explaining staggered column, interrelationships (kind of)... It's OK. Or not -- bloopers, 40 mm, 1500+ years from now.

But... There's team's of five and a whole lot of talk about platoon, company with officers and heavy hitter SNCO’s plentiful and... All it was, just talk. Never cohesive, understandable TO or unit structure for any non-mil types. Just very frustrating for me, no logic throwing lieutenants, Captains, SNCO around and their in charge of 5? 10? 20? marines. I've chilled out w mil Sci Fi regarding tactics, forgive a lot on weapons n equipment but I expected at least avg but didn't get that much.

Last, they went overboard with diversity and political correct. If you like to wager, consider a bet where you bet on the number of gender pronouns you'll read for a gender. Marine Corps of future is 70%+ female I guess. I'm good with that except for direct ground combat fighters. Sorry, hit me but that's how the authors vision went and I disagree.

Book 3 didn’t disappoint! This time, Rev and Punch are like best buds, except Punch has seemingly started to do things even before Rev asks, basically reading his mind, and even outright defying his requests. Unsettling, I’d bet. Makes me wonder if Rev will ever ask someone about it.

I must admit I’m more than a little worried about Rev’s harness system under his skin for Pashu. For as far in the future as this series is set, and as much technology as they now have access to, why on earth does Pashu have to weigh about 150lbs? That’s INSANE to think Rev has to carry that kind of a load on his shoulder… augmented or not. I mean damn! Why so freaking heavy?! And wtf is up with the battery system? For all the things Rev kept saying “that’s another thing to mention to Doc C”…. He never actually gets a chance to talk to her again — only Daryll. Sieben made some egregious errors in design and capability with the IBHU, expecting that it wouldn’t hinder the marines. T-shirt harness notwithstanding… that’s just a bandaid and not a very good one. I’m concerned about Rev’s health. I surely hope these issues are resolved, and soon.

I really am not a fan of the master gunnery sergeant, the way he treats Rev is so disrespectful. Sure he’s the boss, but that doesn’t mean he has to lead with such disdain and be a micromanager. I am also really getting sick of all the politics, the secrecy of things, and Rev losing medals. That far in the future I’d expect humanity to have better political systems in place where that shit isn’t necessary, but sigh… I guess politics is still politics and always will be.

The Three are so cool! Can’t wait to learn more about them, I hope more encounters happen for Rev :)

Super augmentation and medals galore (not!)

After saving the girl and losing his arm, Rev becomes super augmented with a replacement firearm, meaning he is nearly always the main focus of the marine's attack against the Centaurs. In one situation, the Union send him in to get to a Centaurian installation first, but he meets the Freisian soldiers (another branch of Humans who have worked with the Union against the Centaurs but who could be at war with them if not for the Centaurs) and brokers a deal to share the spoils. This pisses off the Union and so they charge him with treason and demote him to corporal. Their earlier recovery of a Centaur that hadn't self-destructed helped precipitate the fall out with the Freisians, but also led to the development of a virus to kill the Centaurs. The marines are now ordered to attack but not kill all the Centaurs so that they can be infected and transmit it to others. This leads the Centaurs to up their game and start attacking more planets directly..... Including Earth!
Rev goes through many changes and continues to develop further as a person with a distinct sense of right and wrong, always doing the right thing no matter what..... This can result in some conflict with the higher ups but ultimately is for the best.... Periods of action are interspersed with character development making for a great read.

Book four picks up after the internal strife with the Children of Angels. That fight isn't done yet, but it's reached a détente.

The Union has come up with a virus they think will kill off the Centaurs, and develop a battle plan around it. Except the dispersion doesn't go the way they hoped. Instead of spreading it on one of the outlying worlds, the centaurs have started attacking the inner home worlds.

Including the world where Rev's Marine battalion are stationed.

I'm not going to spoil anything further, but the fight is interesting. Rev has problems with his embedded AI, and once again get's shafted when it comes to medals. There are also issues with the division that looks into malfeasance within the ranks, which Rev gets caught up in for what happened in book 2.

Rev is a good marine, but he does tend to take matters into his own hands, many times over the orders of his superior officers.

Things come to a head when the centaurs invade Earth, which is now something between a park and a world that has become off limits to pretty much everyone. Once again, Rev ignores his senior officers to do the right thing.

I haven't started on book four yet, but I will shortly.

Solid action and interesting developments. 4/5*

The best so far.

This series started with an engaging premise and plenty of potential that I felt the first book didn’t dig into. But just as the second book improved on the first this third instalment has gone deeper into the consequences of the conflict and technology. The relationships mean more as well. I know the characters, I can see more than even the protagonist the feelings beneath their actions. Rev makes a lot of tough calls. In the first book those decisions paid off too often without much going wrong but from the second book reality seemed to hit home. Here again he doesn’t get it all his way even when he’s doing everything he can. Best of all this series doesn’t dumb him down at crucial moments for the sake of the plot. I’m looking forward to the next book now.

This was better than Book 2, in terms of action and other aspects. What I do like about this series is the realism, which I need to incorporate into my stories in the future, honestly. I like the fact that nothing goes right for the MC, and that it's in a realistic manner of somebody who is serving in the military. Heroic of course, but Rev is pretty much a problem maker, but manages to do the right thing, even if the commandant in the book has some negative feelings about it. As the series goes along, it does show the complexities of serving with women, men, and love relationships, and how war brings them together. I always thought that Tomiko and Rev are a "thing", but there's another woman, and it kinda goes with how I've dealt with romantic relationships in the past, so it's a good story nonetheless.

Freaking awesome

I only recently found this series, and in the span of about 4 days have read through the three books so far, and I was blown away by them.
The story and writing flows easily and the characters are incredible. They feel like old friends and like you’ve been with them through it all.
One thing I do hope will be fleshed out is more of his personal relationships in the upcoming books. Though the way it develops certainly draws you in, but sometimes you can’t help but think of him as a blind idiot friend, like damn man, miko is right there.

All in all an awesome book that I highly recommend.

The war keeps on

The tin asses are attacking closer to home and huge strides are being made in biological weapons against them Rev is still having issues with his “arm canons “ but the war comes into his backyard ans is ordered not to kill but to let them get away after being shot with the bio virus so it can potentially infect more of them and in true rev fashion he disobeyed orders more than once but only ended up in jail for one of them the conscripts are supposed to be let go but it’s canceled due to the unbelievable arrogance of the tin asses they land on the mother and as rev has been known to do he got right in the middle can’t wait for next book!

Wow, just wow!

Frankly I don’t know where the series can go from here, with SO much that’s happened & that it has a satisfying ending that in other books would be a good way to end it.

Without spoilers, the war has been grinding on with grim looking signs more and more. Rev is getting more skilled in using Pasha but is finding a physical cost that is challenging to overcome. As is so unfortunately true in war he & his group of brothers and sisters are more aware of the losses than many. Respect for the fallen indeed. As in any society, freedom is never free. It’s paid for with courage and blood.

Good read

Your trying to get through your sentence to military service but… you’re a “ oh crap!” magnet. You have a conscience. You know right from wrong. But you’re a grunt! Follow orders or improvise? Politicians who sit back safe and secure that know little of warfare or it’s repercussions that some of their decisions can have. Why do you keep getting thrust into those situations where you need to make life changing situations or countermanded orders without the benefit or being able to run it up the chain of command!

Third not a Charm but I'll keep reading

It seems no matter how good s military person you are, the powers that be will find a way to put you down. Politics in and out of uniform has definitely followed humanity into the stars. The parallels between now and the future are to close. In the end it's your squad and platoon nothing much except for family and friends matter. Nuff said!!

Three and a half stars. This is a solid conclusion to the opening trilogy of Rev's story. The ending did seem a bit forced and while the series continues with more adventures I think I've had enough. I like the story arc of Rev's development and the alien invaders were tough but not unbeatable. I just felt it came together too quickly in the finish.

I might pick up the later books at some other time, but I feel I've had enough of Rev for now.

This is book 3 and I'm hooked. This is the first of the series that had any romance and it was pretty much over after a chapter or so. Great action, good feel for future military, and lots of annoying politics which, sadly, makes the story feel more real. Nicely done, on book 4 now and, so far, it is a page turner as well. If you like Military Sci-Fi where the individual soldier (Marine) can make a real difference you'll love this book.

Book three

Mistakes: Another extremely well written book without any problems that I could find.

Plot: Lots more action. Even an invasion of the mother planet.

Characters: We see more growth in the characters. The way that they keep avoiding giving the MC much deserved medals is annoying.

When I started reading this I just finished an amazing series, and I thought this was going to be hard to get into.
I was wrong, amazing book and already pre ordered the next one. First class.

Only one point I would make. Maybe put a quick 2 page review of what has come before. Just to recap.

Best In Series So Far

This entry into the new series by Chaney and Brazee has without a doubt been the best written so far. The character development and action only set to drive the story forward in a way that is entirely realistic and down to earth (unlike most military SF these days) and only sets us up for an exciting possibility that is book 4 coming soon.

What will happen to the Nexus of Chaos?

Faster pace than the last book & so much to cover but it was well done. I enjoyed getting to know Miko more, even if it's only a little. And I think the time spent on those who lost a limb & how in Rev's time it didn't mean you were done with military service. A big thank you for sharing this story with us. It really is incredible.

More to come

What did I like or dislike about this book? I like that Rev always attempts to do the right thing. I dislike the fact that so many slap him down for doing it! I also dislike that he is so blind re Tomiko.

This could have been the end of the series but another book is coming up, hopefully it will include a cure for blindness.

This was the best of this series so far (I'm four books in). It took me a while to warm to this series, but this book cinched it! The story was high stakes, and I couldn't wait to see how it all turned out. It did not disappoint. I love how gritty and realistic it is for being in a crazy hard to imagine future.

Another great addition, keep them coming

I enjoyed this volume very much. The Centaurs hit too close to home this time so Rev and crew have to show them what's what. Triumph and heartbreak abound, all leading to an exciting opportunity for Rev.

Very very good

Chaney and Brazee did it again!! The ending of this book was not what I expected. But I freaking loved it! The action, adventure and butt kicking style of the marines is still keeping humanity safe. Can't wait for the next book.

Another excellent read from Chaney

Another riveting future military story. Well developed and thoughtful. I do have to say that I spotted more typos in this volume than the two previous books, combined. Still, looking forward to the next in the series!
