1.5* I was drawn in by the snappy dialogue and cutesy small town vibes for the first 30% but thereafter things went steeply downhill. The romance is pretty basic fated mates, with a lack lustre conflict, and the suspense-style plot turns on some very creaky hinges. On this basis it would have been a ‘meh’ kind of read. But two things made it problematic. First, the plot becomes weirdly centred on finding a George III charter to protect the ‘old-world-charm’ of said small town, Virtue, from incoming developers. The shenanigans that follow show a total disregard for the implications of the charter as a document of settler colonialism. Everyone seems completely oblivious of the irony of protecting your land claim using the tools of institutionalised theft. Second, the two MCs are both people of colour - Matt is Latino; although Sarah’s heritage is never explicitly discussed there are hints that she’s Black - and are subject to a number of racial aggressions by the author. This includes what I hope is an unwitting racial slur, when Matt imagines Sarah’s cat thinking of her as a ‘food ape’. An indigenous character is also painfully stereotyped for plot purposes.

Audiobook Review: Librarian Bear (Virtue Shifters)

Author: Zoe Chant
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Narrators: Madeleine Dauer and Erik Bloomquist

Characters & Background Information

Sarah has spent most of her life in the small town of Virtue, where the local library has always been her sanctuary. A childhood reading prodigy, she devoured nearly every book on the shelves before leaving for college and earning her master’s degree in library science. Now back home as the head librarian, Sarah juggles an overflowing schedule—running the library, operating a daycare within it, and volunteering for countless town events. Romance has never quite worked out for her, but she fills her days with purpose and community.

Matt, a bear shifter and traveling library archivist, lives a very different life. With no permanent home, he moves from town to town, restoring and cataloging historical collections and establishing preservation policies. His nomadic lifestyle leaves little room for relationships. But everything shifts when he arrives in Virtue and instantly recognizes Sarah as his fated mate—something he never expected and isn’t sure how to handle.

As Matt and Sarah work side by side, they uncover strange gaps and shadows in Virtue’s early history. Their shared curiosity draws them deeper into the mystery, and into each other’s lives.

Highlights

• I appreciated that Matt didn’t drag out his secret—he reveals his shifter nature fairly early, even if he waits longer to admit the fated-mate bond.
• The inclusion of a town mystery gave the story an engaging extra layer and allowed the characters to connect through shared purpose.

Limitations

• The pacing dragged at times. While the characters continued to move forward, the plot itself felt slow, and the mystery surrounding Virtue’s origins wasn’t as compelling or eventful as I hoped.

Narration

Told in dual POV with dual narration, this audiobook features Madeleine Dauer and Erik Bloomquist—both new to me and both well-suited to their roles. Bloomquist’s deep, raspy tone fits a gruff bear shifter perfectly, while Dauer’s intelligent, warm delivery complements Sarah’s character and profession.

Final Assessment

Overall, this was a gentle, small‑town shifter romance with likable leads and a cozy mystery element that added charm, even if the plot didn’t always maintain momentum. The romance is sweet, the world is comforting, and the narration elevates the experience. While I wished for a bit more excitement and depth in the mystery, the story still delivers a pleasant, easy listen—especially for readers who enjoy low‑angst paranormal romance with a wholesome vibe.

Librarian and the bear

Okay, I really liked this story, and would have given it 4 stars except there were two major issues with consistency from book 1 to book 2. While some may consider the rest of this a spoiler, I don't feel it does because (a) you know going in he's a shifter and archivist, and (b) what I'm referring to happens in book 1 and is mentioned early in book 2. My issues are: (1) In book one, it mentioned that Sarah had a masters as an archivist, but this book makes it sound like just a side effect of her job as head librarian. (2) This one is an even bigger issue for me. At the end of book 1, Sarah reveals she knows Jake is a shifter because in a phone call to Mabs she refers to Jake turning wolf and chasing off her ex. But now, she doesn't know anything about shifters, and when Matt tells her about Jake she’s surprised? (3) Finally, in book 1, Jake talks about being a shifter on the phone to his folks, but now we can't talk about this stuff on the phone? In fact, he even talks on the phone about sensitive topics in this book. I agree, they shouldn't, but neither here not there. Pick one and stick to it.

The story itself is cute, and fun. I enjoy the characters, love getting to see more of Mabs/Jake/Noah, and even more interaction with the rest of the town. I will be reading more of the series, just wish they would stay consistent from one story to the next, and while I think the authors (if I recall correctly it's two authors writing as one) should be able to keep small details like that straight, an editor definitely should.

I really liked Sarah, but man was I exhausted by hearing all that she did around town. Sure small towns need people to help with things like this, but it shouldn't get left to one person. Matt was fun, he jumped right in and went along with all the crazy things Sarah was doing, which was a great way to get to know the town.

I loved how they ended up with a secret mission to save the town. They both learned a lot, Sarah more so than Matt, but even that special ability that Matt had didn't seem to phase her very much. I found the people that helped them to be interesting, had more questions than ever after meeting them. By the end of the book, the town was safe again, especially with Sarah and Matt in their new side jobs. I also loved that Matt was staying for his mate.

First, I love every 'Zoe' book I have ever read. This one though, it was kinda just.....WOW! I was so glad to see the Virtue Series continue. Sarah and Matthew could not have been more perfect together. Their story had mystery, romance, humor and a HEA. I loved them both soo much! Even when Matthew needed his ears boxed or when Sarah needed to be kept still for more than 5 minutes. Each and every character throughout the book brought joy to the pages. Once again, very well done 'Zoe'. Y'all rock! I was lucky enough to receive an early copy. This is my honest and voluntary opinion.

Librarian Bear, the second title in the Virtue Shifters series is a fun, sexy story of a slightly different bear shifter, the unique human who is his mate… and self-made complications along with a mystery to solve.

Matthew had no plans to stay in Virtue, none at all. His dream job was waiting for him in New York City, he simply needed to finish up this archive month-long project and he was off to the biggest city of all. Those plans of his, long thought out and planned in minute detail are about to be derailed by one lovely small-town librarian who just happens to be his mate. Only this fated mate tale might not have that happy ending since Sarah will never, ever leave her hometown… and Matt’s dream is in the city.

I loved Matt and Sarah so much. Sarah is, well, a pretty amazing lady. She is the ultimate helper, hardly ever turns down a cry for help, to fix injustice, to lend a hand, or to turn down anything that her friends or the residents of Virtue might ask of her. She’s constantly on the go, forever happy and uplifting, and right now she’s also confused by her reactions to a man who will be in town for such a short time. Sarah doesn’t have time for romance — no, she really has no free time to devote to a relationship because all of her time is used up for the town’s benefit. But that may change for the month that Matt is in town, especially since she’s just been handed another assignment that comes with a mystery that will open her eyes to things she never knew about her hometown.

I have to be so careful in choosing my words here, for it would be so easy to say too much about the mystery involved in Librarian Bear. For a woman who thought she knew just about everything about Virtue, Sarah is about to get bombarded with new, sometimes hard to digest information. I laughed-out-loud at some of her reactions and held back a sigh of frustration with other things revealed. There are threads woven in this story that I hope will be carried through the rest of the series (however long that may be) for now I have questions and hopes for things to come. Matt is so slow to realize that there are always possibilities in any situation. He sees finding his mate as a one or the other decision when it really isn’t. I’ll admit that there were moments when a strong smack upside the back of his head seemed in order, but eventually Matt gets his act together to see those possibilities as realities.

I had fun here with an, at times, slow-burn kind of romance. Librarian Bear is full of sizzling chemistry, likable (and some unlikable) characters, a deeply hidden secret, and some amazing revelations to be unveiled. I had a blast, and hope it isn’t long before we can visit Virtue again.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Sarah and Matt are cool, I really like them. And the story here was amazing as well. I love Virtue and I can't wait to find out what is next for this town. Combine that with a writing style that kind of makes you addicted to the books, and you have your answer to 'why on earth is she reading so much of this again lately?!'.

A bear shifter who’s also an archivist seemed like a surefire winner! Unfortunately, I had a hard time connecting to the story. It’s a very utopian town that didn’t feel real and the heroine was a bit of a Mary Sue. I also have many reservations about the representation for both characters of color. For instance, Sarah’s race/ethnicity was not clear. I assumed she was white but at 34% she mentioned her grandparents left the south after the Civil War (were they part of the Great Migration?) and then she joked that the actors portraying her and Matthew would be Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Oscar Isaac. So if Gugu is portraying her, I have to conclude she’s Black or mixed race but this is never explicitly stated. It’s not clear if there are any other Black people in town—her mother no longer lives there and her grandparents are dead. But Matthew’s representation isn’t much better. He’s Argentinian and possibly biracial himself: his father was Argentinian and his mother was American. After his dad and grandparents died, he and his mom left Argentina when he was 8 and he’s never been back. He doesn’t seem to have any connection to his Argentinian heritage outside of speaking Spanish. Are they the only POC in town? It sure seems that way.

This story would have greatly benefitted from sensitivity readers, so they would have avoided including racist tropes and microaggressions. Matthew imagines Sarah’s cat referring to her as “my food ape.” Ape has a super racist history! Plus, I’ve never heard of a pet owner being referred to that way. The whole thing was confusing. But the worst was the inclusion of a Magical Indigenous Character.

Also disappointing was the barely existent bear shifter element. He shifts once and it’s his way of telling Sarah he’s a shifter and that shifters exist. That’s it. There’s no sense of how often he shifts and he doesn’t know any other bear shifters. It seems like a sad existence for a shifter to me. I was also concerned that he had actual conversations with his bear (who he refers to as Oso) and could somehow see his bear’s facial expressions, which could be a sign of schizophrenia.

Character notes: Sarah is a 32 year old librarian, possibly Black or mixed race. Matthew is an Argentinian archivist and spectacled bear shifter. This is set in Virtue, NY.

CW: Magical Indigenous Character, racially derogative term, settler colonialism, past death of loved ones, ableist language

📚🐻 4 stars – A book-loving bear and the librarian who steals his heart!

If you're in the mood for something cozy, clever, and just the right amount of spicy, Librarian Bear delivers a sweet shifter romance that feels like curling up with a warm blanket and your favorite book boyfriend.

Sarah is exactly the kind of heroine I love—grounded, smart, and juggling more than her fair share of responsibilities in her small-town library. From daycare chaos to wedding plans, romance isn’t even on her radar. But then Matthew walks in—a sexy, broody bear shifter from the big city—and everything changes.

Their chemistry is instant but never rushed, and their emotional connection unfolds through shared laughs, whispered secrets, and a charming historical mystery that brings them closer. I loved the gentle tension of a relationship that was never supposed to last—until both of them start to hope it could.

The setting of Virtue once again works its small-town magic, and the story hits that perfect blend of heart, heat, and humor. If you love shifters with soft centers, heroines with big hearts, and stories with no unnecessary drama, Librarian Bear is a lovely addition to Zoe Chant’s feel-good paranormal romances.

Perfect for readers who want fated love without the angst—just smiles, steam, and a guaranteed happily ever after. 🐾

Sarah Ekstrom is Virtue's librarian, she's instigated many programs to keep the library alive. No matter how hard she tries there doesn't seem to be enough time to get the archives sorted and up to date. She's obtained a grant and is now expecting a contract archivist to take up where she's left off in the archives it's only a month, but it should make a major dent in the backlog.

Matthew Rojas is a bear shifter and a contract archivist. He's traveled around the world and has finally been offered his dream job. National Archivist in the big city. This contract in Virtue is his last one before starting that new job. He just doesn't expect what he finds there.

Early for his first day, Matt finds Sarah closing up the library. It seems there is some sort of emergency that needs her attention. Not wanting to miss anything in this small town, Matt offers to go with her.

Now the source of the emergency was a Real Estate Development company trying to get a bit ahead of the eminent domain to develop the land. This leads Sarah and Matt on a hunt for documents that have apparently disappeared.

Suspense, intrigue, laughter, romance, and sizzle surround this quest. With Matt's Bear providing a fun side conversation the whole way.

Archivist Matthew Rojas thought the Virtue assignment would be easy and a good way to relax into his dream job at the end of the summer. He hadn’t counted on Sarah Elkstrom, the pin-up worthy librarian and core of the town would steal his heart! For Sarah’s part, she was doing her best to hide her drool while keeping Matt away from the other single women in town.

Matt found himself invested in the town, stopping developers from bulldozing over it, attending plays and making friends while easing into a romance. In fulfilling a judge’s request it’s clear the records have been deliberately misplaced as well as all other copies that should’ve been available. The search lets Sarah in on the town secret as she and Matt couple.

This reader was enjoying the humor, chemistry and storyline of this outing until the reveal of the town secret then series continuity slapped me in the face, hard! Sarah was clearly up to speed in Timber Wolf] and this outing isn’t concurrent. Unfortunately, this outing lost credibility and only faults could be seen.

This is a cute story and a fun read.

That being said, this author has the potential to have series like GA Aiken's yet the "Theme" of the story is shoved in your face. "You listen!" Repeat exactly. You don't mind I'm a strong female able to be myself and your supportive!
Good messages and... No reader needs the theme to hit them over the head multiple time. Those spaces could have been filled with banter and other interactions that show the theme without spelling it out.
Personal beef, long distance doesn't put an end to a relationship. Matt would know this as he's moved around a lot and would have multiple friends from the time he's spent living in the various places... That time moaning about the "end date" could have been think about how distance is hard, closeness develops slower etc..
And it is a cute read, I just know this author has more potential then their allowing into their stories.

Sarah is a small-town librarian with a lot on her hands from running a daycare in the library to planning her best friend's wedding. She has no time for romance. Then the new archivist, Matthew, walks in. Matthew is a bear shifter with a dream job waiting in New York when his time in Virtue is done. Both fall at first sight. As they work together to solve a mystery, they realize that there is really something between. But he's leaving so can they solve their relationship and how it'll work?

I really enjoyed this book which is second in the series. While it can be read as a stand-alone, you'll get a better feel for the town and characters if you read the first book before this one. The book's well-written with wonderful characters and it drew me in from the beginning. This was a sweet, quick, fun read and I didn't want to put the book down. I'm very eager for the next book and highly recommend this one.

Another cute and quirky shifter love story. I was disappointed with the book title's lack of pun but one was presented near the end, 'li-bear-ian'. I enjoyed the added mystery of the search for the missing town charter, it gave Matt and Sarah something to do other than just fall adorably in love. It also allowed the history of the shifter community to be explored more. In the first book they didn't really talk about the other shifters in the community and in this one they started to introduce more townsfolk who were shifters, the reason behind why Virtue was founded, and a little bit about the politics and secrets going on behind the scenes. Matt and Sarah have amazing chemistry, his willingness to help Sarah no matter what and asking if she even wants help was perfect. He didn't just show up and do everything his own way, he listened and offered help but was also willing to back off if his help wasn't needed.

A male "libearian!" What fun!

I have to admit that I love librarians and this story has 2 of them! The storyline is fun and the mystery just added to this story's appeal for me! I can't wait to see what happens next in Virtue! Matt is filling a temporary archivist position in Sarah's library in the small town of Virtue. But then developers are trying to steal in and Sarah has to do something to protect Virtue. Since she happens to be Matt's mate, he will do whatever he can to help! Thus starts a library adventure into the history of Virtue!

The pace is fast and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with a character oriented storyline that has some steamy scenes and some action. The characters are vibrant and endearing. I am anxiously awaiting the next story in this series. Read these in order. Enjoy!

A mystery, a hidden agenda, lost records. Follow the search.

Sarah head Librarian has mixed feelings about the Archivist coming to go threw their archives. Matt is looking forward to this brief job before heading to the big city and his dream job, he has worked his whole life for. Can his inner bear change his mind by insisting they are Home ad Sarah is his mate.
Sarah in instant list for the gorgeous Man that just walked into her life, and will walk out in afew weeks.
Can a town who opens it's arms to a stranger, along with a mystery of who took valuable records, where they might be, the deep growing attraction between Matt and Sarah be enough to keep him there?
It's a great story to find out, what happens along with all the everyday life in a small town. Happy reading.

The bespectacled bear and his librarian

Sarah is the town librarian and unofficial guardian angel of Virtue. Matthew is a visiting library archivist, only in town for the summer. His arrival coincides with an impromptu protest Sarah pulls together to stop a rapacious developer from building on her friend's land. Matthew is quite taken by the townspeople and more importantly Sarah who his (spectacled) bear informs him is his fated mate. Matthew is less certain given that this is just a pit stop before he takes his dream job in NYC. Once he reveals his bear to her, they both become entangled in Virtue's secret history as a shifter sanctuary. While solving the mystery of the town's missing charter, Matthew also tries to puzzle out how to reconcile his life plan with his fated mate. Action, intrigue, heat and laughs make this a good read.

I borrowed Librarian Bear ~ Virtue Shifters ~ Book 2, by Zoe Chant, author from the Kindle Unlimited Program on Amazon.

Librarian Bear, has a great plot full of mystery, a town's big secret, a great community full of community spirit and goals and a big problem with a corporate development company coming in to take over the town.

Sarah, the librarian has herself involved in everything in town. She has a library archivist coming to sort out the town history of the town stored in the library for a month. Matt is her fated mate and a bear shifter and steps up to help her every step of the way to save the town and find it's secrets and a happily ever after as he changes to be with her in a reversal of many relationsips, how refreshing!

A wonderfully optimistic and light hearted read.
Loved the upbeat, positive and comedic side of Sarah and her child care ideas were great.
Really thought Mathew’s ‘OSO’ bear was adorable and Sarah’s cat engagingly quirky.
Mathew himself was likeable but his negative attitude about having a mate and not going on to his dream job in the city, dragged on a bit to long for me.
There was also a fair bit of inconsequential filler but overall a very entertaining read.
The story about the charter hunt was pretty fun and I suppose the background story with the developers will continue in the next book.
I wonder if newcomer Steve will be next.

We are back in the town of Virtue.  In the first book in the series we got to know a few members of the town, here, we finally get to learn more about the town.  The story is about Sarah who is in charge of the library, and almost everything else in the town, she is involved in everything, one of those people who can't say no and always wants to help, but then Matt arrives to help with the library's archives, and he gets involved in everything else around her, for she is his mate.

Around those two there is a mystery around the town and they get to learn a lot about how it started and the families that first settled there, and the secrets there.  So if I wanted to learn more about the town after the first book, my wish was certainly granted.

I believe this can be read as a stand-alone book from book 1. While this book was good in a simplistic- not need to really think too hard to read it to get the plot, it lacked consistency needed in a series, stuff that happens/is known, in book 1, is not the same in book 2. So a content editor that read book 1, so that the facts can be straightened out. That really took away from this book, since I did read book 1 and pick this up because of book 1. I'm not sure I want to continue with the series, this book was a bit too simplistic & predictable for me, along with the inconsistencies.

A Mystery Is A Foot

Awesome storyline! Loved it 2 books in and a mystery is a foot, and solving it is not easy. There is a secret too. Loving these characters. These stories are not the hot and sexy heat bearing ro ance books. No these actually have a some-what mormal living aspect. Ok so use you imagination and remember these are adventures of paranormals so dont get all huffy ok
Grabbing the next read because there is still another plot to have and I am with Sarah and Matt to solve it

Characters worth knowing

A fun read. There's mystery afoot.
Some redaction issues when rewrites didn't get completely corrected in editing ...
The author has a quirky sense of humour and it sounds through in the dialog of all the characters from minor to major. The town makes you want to be a part of it all.
There are a couple issues with the storyline stuttering and not quite lining up, but overall it's fantastic. There is the continuation of the previous book's storyline and enough community foreshadowing to hype the next book in the series.

Sweet book. Matt comes to town as a contracted archivist to help Sarah, the local librarian sort things out. They end up on a hunt for the town charter to protect the town from development. Matt’s bear recognized Sarah as his mate and so Matt has been struggling with staying in town or leaving for his dream job. They find the charter and in the process, Sarah learns about Matt and shifters and Matt decides to stay. This is just a sweet easy read. I don’t find that the characters had explosive chemistry or anything but they also had good chemistry for the tone of the book.

Sarah is eagerly waiting for the library's archivist to arrive so that they can organize the town's history files. She is not expecting the hot and sweet man who arrives to take on the chore. Matthew has a secret, and he knows Sarah is his mate as soon as he sees her, but while she is an integral part of her community, Matt is a rolling stone who will move on once his contract ends.

This is a sweet, sweet story of mystery and love!

Yet another aweeee moment.

Yep. The magical fingers of the Zoe Chant writers have produced another sweet and awe story, complete with the sharp child directing his family and the dynamic duo of librarian and archivist solving town mysteries. It’s what the movie industry calls a “feel good” experience — don’t bother reading if you hate Hallmark Christmas movies, or are looking for gravity to weigh you down.

Wow, absolutely love it!

I'll start by saying - I don't cry. Not even affected by "Old Yeller". This book made me cry, and I loved it. It's easiest to say that there was nothing I found lacking. Story is wonderful, editing great. Characters mesh like puzzle pieces and I want to live in Virtue just to be around the townspeople. I love this Zoe Chant and hope to find others by her.

So sweet

Having a mystery be solved by the librarian and archivist was an interesting way to set this up. Matt and Sarah are so perfect for each other. Not all stories need Alpha males. Sarah is relatable.
