Years after coffee shop owner Bernie Porter lost the only man he’s ever loved, he’s vowed never again to risk his heart. Who’d want it? It’s too battered, bruised, and broken.
A bungled street robbery leaves Jared Hastings injured and bloodied on Bernie’s doorstep. Bernie’s instinct is to offer help and protection, but Jared wants neither. Just like he doesn’t want the law or doctors involved. He’s had enough of police and hospitals to last a lifetime.
As fast as Jared bursts into Bernie’s life, he’s gone, leaving Bernie with the gnawing conviction something precious has slipped through his fingers.
Their paths cross again in a way neither could have foreseen. Can Bernie learn to love again, and can Jared learn to trust?
A born and bred Londoner, she may have moved to someplace more leafy but the city is still very much part of her DNA, which is why her books are set in and around present-day London, providing a thrilling, metropolitan backdrop to the main action.
4.5 stars rated up reviewed on www.lovebytesreviews.com After reading the first three books I was curious to read this 4th book which was about barista owner Bernie. While the books are stand-alones, I feel like I got the complete package and back story because I had read the whole series. So for me it was easy to make the connection when there is talk about all the barista boys. Something I would suggest before you pick up this book. This story was the kind of the perfect sum up of the series. It brought back everything and ended up being the most complete and emotional one of the whole series, in my opinion. Bernie and Jared meet by accident and despite no follow-up there, life decides to interfere and when they meet again it is the start of something new? Or should I say difficult? Or something exciting? Take your pick! I loved the pacing of their relationship, the way they came together slowly and intensely. However, just when you think there is some calmness coming in their relationship when Jared has been able to tell his back story to Bernie, author AE Ryecart throws in the heavy stuff… How heartbreaking it is to read how past issues drive Bernie and Jared apart and as a reader I noticed myself begging to have them work it out quickly. As mentioned before this fourth book in the series is the best in my opinion and not just because of the anticipation that it is Bernie’s story. The author did a fantastic job in writing a complete, thorough story involving a middle-aged man being given a chance to love again. Kudo’s to the author for being able to pull this off in a series that is at its fourth book. I would suggest to pick up the complete series and introduce yourself to all the barista boys.
Although this is the fourth and final book in the Barista Boys series, it can be read as a standalone, which I have done. *points finger* I can hear all of you in the gallery gasping – I have to admit I’m kicking myself over just picking this series up just now. Though never fear, my good people, I fully intend to go back and read the other stories.
As readers of my reviews will know, I’m a bit *pinches fingers* of an emotional sap *shrugs* Bernie and Jared’s story had me riding the emotional rollercoaster. There were tears *nods head* - all the tears. Plus, I had emergency intermissions where I had to raid the biscuit cupboard. Sheesh! If I’ve put on a few pounds I fully blame the author, lol.
Bernie Porter is the best kind of man. His experiences from his youth have left an indelible mark on his heart and soul. He has loved and lost in the cruellest of ways. If he can save just one boy from the same fate, then there are no lengths he won’t go to to ensure that doesn’t happen. Barista Boys is more than just a café, it’s a safe haven for those lost and alone.
Racked with guilt, however misplaced, Bernie feels undeserving of love. Yet, as those nearest and dearest to him find their own happiness, the lonelier Bernie feels.
“he felt like the loneliest man in the world.”
A chance encounter with Jared Hastings following a street robbery changes everything for Bernie. Fissures start to appear in his carefully constructed armour. Especially those surrounding his heart, but Jared’s scars as still new. I defy anyone not to break down when Jared’s story is revealed. I wept (see above), but I’m convinced that would’ve angered Jared. He survived; he wants no one’s pity. He may be brittle, but each day he is striving to put himself back together again – to not let demons from the past win.
Do you ever read a story and think no matter what the characters have endured in the past, that each trial they have overcome was to lead them to this moment in time? That all roads led to this destination in finding each other? Yes? Well, that’s exactly how I felt with Bernie and Jared’s story. In each other, they will find their salvation.
Crap, I’m away again… happy tears this time though, folks. Signing off now…

Two men who are both a little damaged. Can they reach beyond their hurt and fears and heal together?
I loved both Bernie and Jared and my heart absolutely broke for the heartache they have both suffered. Their stories were both heartbreaking and the author had me in tears at one point. But they fit together so well. Their chemistry was amazing and the progression of their relationship was just right. I loved watching them get to know each other and learning confide in each other.
The story was well-written and interesting. I absolutely adore what the cafe stood for and it’s sad they don’t have more places like it for LGBT youth who’ve found themselves on the street.
While I haven’t read the previous books in the series, I never once felt lost or confused and i’ll definitely be checking the other books out. Really, this was a lovely and enjoyable read, sad at times, but with a heartwarming finish. Definitely recommendable!

I have to say while I have loved every book in this series, Bernie’s story was the one I was waiting for the most. I knew it would be a rough emotional journey but I also suspected we would get answers to some of the questions we had. It was for sure a real heart wrenching as well as heart warming read. With the tears there were smiles and laughter as well. I mean it’s the Barista Boys so you know what I mean. Only so much more powerful after knowing Bernie so long. I really enjoyed the little tidbit be got on Pete. Oh I just know his story will get me as well. If you are looking for a series with characters you’ll love and want to take home, this is the one. I’d adopt them all.
I didn't read books 1 - 3 and felt like I missed a bit in book 4 because of it but nothing that drives the current plot.
I liked this okay, both Bernie and Jared had traumatic backstories that were heart breaking. I wasn't a big fan of the big reveals and how the book carries that out. While both guys get to a "non judgmental" place, when Jared's story was being told, Bernie was not non judgmental and asked a few questions that I thought were very unsupportive and had I been Jared, I would not have felt safe to tell him the whole story. It made me not like Bernie that much.
Bernie's backstory was very interesting though. Realistic in too many ways.
Cute, sweet, endearing. Those are some of the adjectives that come to mind when thinking about this book. While Jared and Bernie’s backstories were rough-to put it mildly-it never took away from the love and sweetness flowing through their story. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy.
Two tortured souls find their HEA with each other.
Bernie is book four and the final one in the Barista Boys series. Each of the books can easily be read as a standalone story, even this one. If you love reading series in order as much as I do, though, I really encourage you to start from the beginning with book one. Bernie is an integral character in each of the stories and I think having that background makes reading his story even more special.
I knew that Bernie would eventually get his own book but I hated having to wait for it. Let me tell you, it was so worth the wait. Ms. Ryecart has truly outdone herself with Bernie's story. Not only do we finally learn what has been torturing him, we also get to visit a bit more with characters from the earlier books in the series.
Bernie is always helping everyone else; he never turns away a boy in need. But what about himself, what does Bernie need? He finds Jared hurt on the street after he's been mugged. He takes Jared into his home and helps him until someone comes to take him home. But Jared isn't one of "his boys." Jared is a man, near his own age, and he has Bernie longing for things that he never lets himself think about.
Jared has suffered horribly at the hands of someone who was supposed to love him. He's now trying to get his life back and resume some semblance of normalcy. He appreciates Bernie's kindness but is afraid to accept that Bernie is interested in him; he's just too damaged. Bernie is fighting his own demons and is afraid that once Jared learns the truth about him he will want to flee.
Like the other books in this series, this one drew me in and wouldn't let me go. There are some very emotional and difficult things to read about both Bernie and Jared, but learning about their pasts was part of this reader's journey into loving these characters. There is such tenderness and heartache in this book. I just wanted to grab Bernie and Jared and hug them and never stop.
As I said in my review of Connor & Ash, Ms. Ryecart seems to have a knack for writing stories that really rip me apart at times and yet I can't say that I think they are filled with too much angst at all. What her characters go through never seems contrived or designed to hurt them just for the sake of doing so.
While I'm sad that this is the end of the Barista Boys series I'm looking forward to more wonderful stories from one of my favorite authors.
This is the first book I've read by this author and, sadly, I came in at the very end of the series. Don't worry, I've added the previous three to my wish list so I'll someday get to enjoy the rest of the Barista Boys. Bernie is somewhat of a shepherd for all the boys and anyone that needs aid in their little corner of Soho. The cafe is set up to be a sanctuary of sorts to those people who are homosexual and have no support or resources. Saving people is what he does. Since he gives succor to everyone else we're left to wonder if that's enough. Not enough for others, but enough for him? Who comforts him? Who makes a home for him? Who eases his burdens?
Opening with a wedding we see just how much Bernie longs for someone to have for his own. Those desires will just have to wait because on his own stoop is yet another person who needs him. Fate has a way of combining what we need and what we have to give, though, and not always in a way you'd expect.
The man on his stoop is Jared and is far more damaged than he lets show. Their first couple meetings aren't ideal at all but hesitation is pushed off in the name of moving forward and healing. Jared gives in to his yearning and agrees to see Bernie. More thrilled than he can say, Bernie pursues Jared and is drawn to him in a way he hasn't been for decades. Both of these men are scared but not willing to let their connection fade away.
There's more than enough darkness in each of them. Life definitely had their moments of spectacular suck-tasticness. Watching them navigate courtship and falling in love both in spite of and despite their pasts was heartbreakingly dear. I have to say that I loved Bernie slightly more than Jared. Not that Jared wasn't great or deserving of reader admiration, there was just something about Bernie. The choices he made in life, his devotion to caring for others because of his perceived failure, his commitment to Jared, his fear of being worthy of love for himself, his determination...all of it painted a picture of a man so deserving a partner.
The story was deep, sweet, tender, challenging, and really very good. Both men found love and healing in one another. Reading Bernie's story and seeing the happiness he facilitated for all the men around him made me want to read all of the Barista Boys stories. Excellent book.
First, I was provided with a copy of this book by the author as part of a FB giveaway. This is review is a fair and honest review.
Bernie is the fourth book in the Barista Boys series and the first book by Ali Ryecart that i've read. I don't mind starting series or loosely woven books in the middle or the end. I do it quite a bit as I'm relatively new to the genre and it's more likely that a new or recently released book will catch my eye.
Bernie is the owner of a cafe called Barista Boys located in the SoHo area of London. We find out early on that he's a bit dour and hasn't been in a romantic relationship for years and years. Walking home, he finds Jared (Jay) near his flat, injured after a robbery. Jared refuses to go to A&E (ER for Americans) or call the police. Bernie finally insists that Jared come to his flat so he can call someone.
Bernie's feeling something and bobbles asking Jared out but they meet up again by accident.
Jared also has trauma in his past but it's more recent than Bernie's. Jared's also attracted to Bernie but is battling his past trauma. It's a relatively slow burn book, but the both men have harrowing backstories that they share with each other over the course of the book. There is a brief content warning in the beginning but it doesn't fully cover what's revealed.
I had a bit of problem early in the book. Some of Bernie's actions/speech towards Jared felt too forceful. Given Jared's past, I would have expected Jared to be more hesitant about getting together, but that's me, and your mileage may vary (YMMV). That issue smoothed out in the latter half of the book. While the characters of the previous books all make appearances, beyond Pete, they didn't make much of an impression on me so I'm not raring to go read so-and-so's book like I am with some series. I believe I will read the rest of the Barista Boys stories in the future though, just not immediately.
I admit I was a bit nervous about reading this book after following the series through the previous three. I love Ali's characters, her broken boys who come to work at the Barista Boys coffeehouse and heal, but this story is something more: we finally get the tale of Bernie, owner of the cafe, self-appointed guardian, and head of this family-by-choice. We learned a bit of his story in Connor and Ash, book 3, but now we not only get the whole, Bernie gets his own chance at redemption and happy ever after.
Which brings me back to my case of nerves. I know I'm not the only fan who has begged Ali to write Bernie's story, and I know she loves him as much as we do, but - what if it's just not satisfying?
Rest assured, this tale does full justice to Bernie, reader expectations, and notions of true romance. I don't want to spoil a minute of it, but it's really beautiful without being maudlin. There are moments of such sadness, and then in counterpoint something as prosaic as cocoa and a snuggle on the couch, or teenagers' yelling interrupting a romantic encounter. Throughout, I felt compelled to cheer for Bernie and Jared, to understand both men better, and to pray that happiness doesn't pass them by this time. In Jared, Bernie has finally met his match: an experienced man who, against initial appearances, needs uplifting and support but is capable of saving himself, and who is strong enough to help Bernie finally face his demons. It is a great book, the very best of the series. While it can be read as a standalone, you certainly get a much better sense of who Bernie is and the haven he's created at the cafe if you read the other Barista Boys books first. And can I just say about the cover: yum!! I was given an ARC in return for my honest review.
Been waiting for Bernie's story ages and it didn't disappoint! Bernie is feeling melancholy surrounded by the rest of the Barista Boys in their happy couples. Making his way home from Danny and Jude's wedding he stumbles across Jared who has just been mugged. He refuses medical help but reluctantly accepts a cup of coffee and a place to rest whilst waiting on someone to take him home. Instant connection felt and Bernie wants more time with the man. Jared is recovering from a major traumatic even in his recent past and the last thing he expects is to be attracted to his rescuer when he gets mugged. After turning Bernie down when he asks him out, he is pleasantly surprised to meet him at his family's barbecue. I love both characters. They've both been through big, life changing events, and it's altered the course they thought they would be on. Their initial meeting was filled with compassion from Bernie and hesitation from Jared. I did feel that Jared revealing all was really quick for the relationship but it worked for them. The history for both was well written and brought out emotions for both. I liked that in the telling of both their events, they needed to take a break. Kind of making it more realistic as telling such things take a physical and mental toll. The world that A E Ryecart has created is brilliant, all characters from the previous books are involved, even just slightly. It wraps all of the characters up together, giving them their happy ending they all deserve. I definitely recommend this to everyone who's read the Barista Boys series. It's not fully necessary to have read the previous books to understand the goings on but I think it helps. I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review
Finally, Bernie’s story. I was so looking forward to reading this. It is everything I was hoping for and more. Ever since reading the first book of the Barista Boys series I had a soft spot for Bernie. The man who takes in every lost boy and offers them a safe haven deserves his own happily-ever-after. And he gets it when he meets Jared. Jared has secrets of his own and his scars are evidence of that. Scarred from the inside and outside, but he is the perfect match for Bernie. Hearing his horrific story, had me tearing up. It takes a strong person to survive that. And Bernie, no stranger to helping the damaged ones, is just the man to help him through it. As this wasn’t enough, at long last, we hear Bernie’s story. Meeting Jared scared him to death, but also got him to trust and believe in love again, and gave him the courage to tell about his past. Once again I was crying my eyes out. So much heartache. I knew it wouldn’t be a sweet story. Every book in the series uncovered some more of Bernie’s past and that was not easy to read. The reality surpassed every expectation. It was heartbreaking and sent me shivers along my spine. As in every book, this story is part of a whole. The whole of the makeshift family with all the boys Bernie saved and gave a home. The antics of the Barista boys gave this book the much-needed lightheartedness, fun, and laughter. This is book #4 in the Barista Boys series but can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend reading the other books as well, though. You will appreciate this book even better as there are several recurring characters. And not in the least because they are equally as good.
love stories about men who have lived and have some life experience. The author uses a gentle hand with words to create a lovely story of love and moving forward with life. Awesome character development and great writing!
Bernie is someone we have met during the previous books of this series, he is always strong, level headed and takes care of everyone. In this story we get to know him and his tragic history and how it has affected his choices in life.
Jared is so strong also, living through a horrific experience and making a new life for himself. Jared is so honest and beautiful in his struggle to learn how to live again. His hesitation and courage just broke my heart and at the same time showed the resilience of the man.
Bernie and Jared together were interesting because as one would lead the other would be able to falter and vise a versa. They took such beautiful care of each other as they struggled to create their future. The did hurt each other but never with intention and always dealt with their pain together fairly quickly. i liked the maturity that these men brought to the story, they had messed up pasts, but they were adults and worked through their issues together.
This story tugged at my heartstrings and i was cheering for their love story to become their future.
I voluntarily reviewed a Advanced Readers Copy of this book
Vowing never to risk his heart again after he lost the only man he had ever loved, coffee shop owner Bernie Porter knows that no one would want his battered, bruised and broken heart. When a bungled street robbery leaves Jared Hastings injured and bloodied on Bernie’s doorstep. Bernie’s instinct is to offer help and protection, but Jared wants neither. Just like he doesn’t want the law or doctors involved. He’s had enough of police and hospitals to last a lifetime. As soon as Jared leaves Bernie has the gnawing conviction something precious has slipped through his fingers. Then they unexpectedly meet but can this time they agree to see each other again and can Bernie learn to love again as well as Jared learn to trust?
I really enjoyed this story with Bernie finally getting a chance at happiness instead of him always putting the boys first. I loved learning more about Bernie and it was interesting to learn more about Jared and how he was connected to Bernie's previous life. The reasons for both Bernie's and Jared's hesitancy in having a relationship were sensitively described and my heart went out to them both. I also loved the way that the Barista Boys were included in the story of Bernie and that they helped to join the two men together even if it was just covering the cafe so Bernie could have time off. Easy to read, feel and understand. This story contains mature MM content and references to domestic abuse.
I've been really looking forward to this one, from first being introduced to Bernie in a small cross over with a Christmas Novella, I was hooked. There was just stomething about this man that grabbed my attention from the first mention of his name.
His story has wound it's way through the other books in the Barista Boy's series, but you never got to know much about him and that intrigued me more and more.
Bernie's story is not an easy one, and you can understand why he's so fiercely protective of the 'boy's who work for him at the cafe. It's also great to see the walls he's built around himself being dismantled brick by brick as he allows someone inside when he finds Jared, broken and battered on his doorstep after an attack.
Both Bernie and Jared have their secret's, a pas that won't let them be truly free, but seeing these two lost souls find not only each other, but also love is heartwarming.
AE gives us a story that reaches inside and tugs at your heartstrings with Bernie, and I have only one complaint... I WANT MORE!!!
This series has brought a new author to me, and one that I look forward to reading more from in the coming year.
This is the best book in the Barista Boys series! I loved everything about it and I could not put it down. I love when a book has me feeling so many emotions that I shed a few tears. It is beautifully written and the characters are very engaging. I have loved Bernie since the first book and now I love him even more now that I know his history. Jared is a beautiful, wounded man with scars inside and out after surviving a horrific end to a relationship. Together they have to learn to open their hearts to love again. It is so hard for both of them to talk about and remember their pasts but once they tell each other everything they can start to heal. It is great to have all the characters from the previous books in this one. My favorite secondary characters are Lindy and Mikey, Jared's sister and brother-in-law. Mikey is also an old friend of Bernie's with a dubious past. Finding out how Barista Boys started was a nice addition to the story. I can't wait to read another book by this author. I was given an ARC to review by Gay Book Promotions.
Who'd have thought that a set of blue eyes could unlock Bernie's heart. This book is beautiful Bernie and Jared just meant to be. I've wanted to read Bernie's story as he'd always helped his boys get thier happiness but he deserved some too. Jared's journey isn't a happy one and a scene where he tells of a horror time might desturb readers. Violent scenes included. Bernie owned the Baristia Boys Cafe that his family of employees ran. Bernie was a favourite for sorting out troubles for his workers and friends close to him. But at 43 he has never gotten over Kevin. Bernie helps a man who's been mugged bruised and battered near his apartment. Jared is a beautiful person but the last 3 years of his life in Germany was the biggest nightmare. Escaping with barely his life he owes to his sister and Micky for encouragement. A heart reaching story but love strives through. Highly recommend.
Bernie is about two broken men with painful pasts It is about how they deal with their turmoil and how the accept each other for who they are now. They both have to find the inner strength to accept themselves as they are and trust the other will be there no matter what I enjoyed the banter between all the characters which lightened the the story and stopped the book from being gloomy. I really connected with the characters, though sometimes I was screaming at them to tell the other one how they felt, or why they were holding back from one another. Though it is always easy to tell people how to do something, when your not part of the story which is full of emotions.
The book is the first I have read in the series and now I want to read the other books
Bernie Porter, coffee shop owner helps lost boys who end up at Barista Boys. He's no Peter Pan but he has a heart of gold. On his way home from the wedding of two of his boys he comes across Jared Hastings who has been mugged and is just coming round. We discover later the reason why he is now living with his sister and when coincidence means Bernie is at one of the sister's parties the two men find perhaps they are meant to help each other heal. A well told love story which needs to be accompanied by a good supply of tissues
Bernie and Jared’s story does not disappoint. Finally we learn the history behind what makes Bernie so caring toward his employees and friends but also what make him distant, sad and grumpy. Jared’s backstory is just as heartbreaking but their coming together is so imperfectly perfect. Finally sharing their past with each other allows them both to begin to heal and to see that a future together is not only possible but that happiness is a reality. The Barista Boys Series is a great series and I hope that there are more boys to come.
This is such a wonderful story…if you’re able to hold yourself together as each main character reveals their emotionally charged histories. Pain radiates off the pages as they build a relationship together…while you’re able to reconnect with the other ‘Barista Boys.’ Bernie shares the reasons behind his owning ‘Barista Boys’ and Jay shares his life in Germany. Nothing can prepare you for either… Luckily they have family and friends who were there to support them…even though that can be a double-edged sword!
This was a very emotional book for me. I hadn't read any of the other Barista Boys books and at the beginning, I thought it was about an older man who had been unlucky in finding a partner and was feeling lonely. But when Jared comes into the picture, you discover that there are two men with pasts that they are struggling to move on from. The sparks between Bernie and Jared are palpable from the moment they meet and I found myself reading uninterrupted to see what would happen to the two of them. A great read!
This one is, hands down, the best book in a particularly good series.
Bernie is the kind of character that will steal your heart from the beginning, and here we finally discover what's the motivation behind his drive to help all those lost boys we have known in the previous books.
And his and Jared journey to happiness is a thing of beauty. You'll laugh and cry and will be so, so happy for them at the end. *happy sigh*
Love this beautiful and sweet romance. Spectacular storyline that pulled me in right from the beginning and would not let me put this book down until the very end. Bernie and Jared are wonderful characters with troubled and dark pasts that make it difficult to trust and believe that they deserve love. I love watching them come together and see their relationship grow as they help each other heal. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
After reading about the other Barista Boys, it was great to see Bernie find his HEA. I liked Jared and it was a slow burn. We learn about the horrible things in their pasts that made them into the men they are today. I think Bernie was just perfect for Jared. Whilst I enjoyed seeing the other Barista Boys, I wish Connor could have been there to witness his friend falling in love.
this was amazing.. this was sexy.. this was heartfelt and made me feel so many things.. this story took me on some twists and turns.. it made me sad and happy.. the writing was amazing.. i felt like i was in the story as a character instead of reading about them. lol.. it was amazing.. so very amazing and im so glad i got to review it
I think this is the final book in the series and I was so glad to see Bernie get his story told. We met him three books ago, owner of cafe where all the stories are set. We have learnt a bit about him over the series so it was nice to see him get his story out completely. Well written steamy and with plenty of angst I really enjoyed it
I loved Bernie and Jared, especially Bernie, he was such a great character. I haven't read the other three books in the series yet, but they are on my list. (this book can be read as a standalone, but i feel like i have to read the other three...lol) Another great book by A.E. Ryecart!
I've now read all 4 books in the Barista Boys series. I loved every one of them, got the whole series and read them one after the other. I so looked forward to reading Bernie and Jay's story and it didn’t disappoint. Highly recommended.
