When your parents are your worst enemy, how do you survive?
Tider didn’t get to choose his parents. He never would have picked the ones he had. They were monsters. They loved showing how powerful they were to everyone who came to their house. They used dark magic to keep the other elementals in line.
Soon they were going to want him to follow in their footsteps, but he didn’t want to. He didn’t want to hurt people and control them. All he wanted was for his parents to be normal and maybe to have a friend.
When his power starts to show itself, he tries to keep it hidden, knowing his parents will try to corrupt him right away. He thinks he’s doing a good job until they make him mad, and he drops a large ball of water on their heads.
Now they know his power has emerged, and that he will be powerful once he can control it. There’s no way to stop them from ruining his life, but he’s still going to try.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. The story was so easy to read a real page turner. Tider is a boy who lives with his parents who are powerful council members with aspirations of ever more power and control. But they are not good people and not good parents and Tider hates living with them, his parents use dark magic and are ever vigilant for signs that Tider's magic is beginning to blossom. Tider is determined not to give them any signs that it is because he knows they want him to become a powerful dark mage like themselves. What follows is a great read and highly recommended.
The author has a good start to this series by introducing us to a severely conflicted youth. You will want to support him. You will be disappointed that the story ends before he blossoms into the adult you know he will become. Yet still a good story as you follow his internal struggles to become the person he clearly wants to be.
A short story about a young boy, his magic, and his desire to use his magic the way his parents use theirs. I enjoyed reading it, but wanted more information about Tider’s world and his place in it. I guess I need to read the series to get more of that.
