Beefcakes #2

Sugarlips

Rate this book
I learned a lot the night my cheating fiancé called off our wedding:

1. A cheater’s gonna cheat no matter how smart you are, how charming you act, or how hot your bod is.
2. Nothing eases the pain of a broken heart like a late-night donut delivery from a hot guy like Liam Evans
3. Said donuts and a pitcher of margaritas do not mix well.
4. Drunkenly declaring that a hot guy is your best friend will not make your tingly bits chill out.

Somehow, my drunken decree making Liam Evans my best friend works and we decide to open a food truck together—The Dump Truck… a late-night junk food truck servicing the broken-hearted.

With our new business venture and the rocky relationship between his brother and my sister, a friendship between us is as far as it can go… until a national broadcast claims that we’re a couple.

Now the whole world thinks we’re madly in love, and The Dump Truck business is booming as a result.

And as our make-believe relationship gets all too real, I’m finding that breaking up has never been so sweet...

Katana Collins is a USA Today bestselling author of over twenty novels, novellas, and comic books in a variety of genres. She is most known for her sensual contemporary romances and her wildly popular comic book— Batman White Knight Presents: Harley Quinn with DC Comics.

When she was younger and stole her mother’s Harlequins to read beneath the covers with a flashlight, she wanted to read about the tough as nails heroine. The perfectly imperfect girl with quirks and attitude and sass. And the anti-heroes who were anything but “Prince Charming.” Forget the knight on a white horse … she wanted the bad boy on a motorcycle.

An avid animal lover, she lives in Portland, Maine with her kind of mean cat, derpy lab-pitt mix, mellow chihuahua, and very not mellow cairn terrier puppy. Oh, yeah… there’s a husband somewhere in that mix, too.

She can usually be found in a coffee shop with her nose buried in a laptop wearing fabulous (albeit sometimes impractical) shoes.

She loves connecting with book lovers like herself, and fellow sassy storytellers, so feel free to drop her an email, visit her on her website. She also loves connecting on Instagram, Facebook or in her reader group, Kat’s Kittens!

I am surprise Sugarlips is underrated in Goodreads. This book is very entertaining. There is so much element of romance here and Miss Collins done a good job mixing it together.

Childhood/ best friend turned to lover, some sort of real TV show drama, competition, lies and love. The main POV is from Chloe, the heroine. Liam is quite, loyal and fierce hero. The plot is not boring nor dragging. The chemistry is there. Enough to bring the characters alive.

I recommend this book. It is really good.

Me, most of the second half:

description

Also me, most of the last 1/3 with all the damn tweenage cyclical internalizing:

Just f*cking talk to each other already!

description

Nonetheless, it wasn’t all a complete shit show, but my goodness, that aspect was obnoxious 🙄(I can’t even get into it further, otherwise this review would be pages long 🤦🏻‍♀️. So let’s put it this way, the above cost it just shy of an entire star imho.).

In the first handful of chapters, I felt like the writer got carried away meandered in the tedium of their day-to-days, but it was pleasant-ish, just not entirely engaging. I sort of felt like there was a struggle to find the overall tone. Which I think is why I felt sort of disconnected.

The midrange of the story was probably the most entertaining. We got some tender, some flirty & finally some sexy(a little more of this in the last half could’ve gone a long way). My favorite moment is when H showed up at the h’s door covered in buttercream & frustrated after being kicked out of his bakery by his brother on his day off. Idk how the h didn’t lick him…

Anyhoo…
It’s too bad Sugarlips didn’t have a good editor or co-writer to finesse things a bit. The bones were there to be better.

Well sugar my lips, this story was delicious and sweet and oh so satisfying!

I loved this so much! After reading book one, I couldn’t wait for Liam’s story. The author did a fabulous job with him! *BIG SWOONS* I had forgotten how much I wanted and needed his story. And now I love him even more!

Sugarlips is book two in the Beefcakes series and is a stand alone. Beefcakes does not have to be read first. But if you haven’t, I really do think you should some time, because it’s an amazing story as well.

At about the the 80-ish% mark in Beefcakes (book 1), the heroine from that book calls Liam to ask if he would deliver some sweet treats to her sister, Chloe, because she’d just been dumped by her fiancé. Liam knocking on Chloe’s door is where Sugarlips starts.

Let the sugar cravings and yumminess begin!!

Ms. Collins always does a wonderful job of making me feel everything with her talented storytelling. And I was hit right in the feels with this book. I laughed, I got frustrated, angry (at the ex), I swooned and I tingled (you know where), and even teared up a time or two.

Chloe the extrovert, the risk taker, the quirky and wild and all-sorts-of-fun-girl. I absolutely adored her. But she put up some strong walls around her heart and put on a brave face and wouldn’t allow herself to fall in love again. I felt Chloe’s pain from being dumped. I could feel her fear of being left again, my heart hurt for her, and I just wanted to give her a big hug.

And Liam...he’s the introvert...the kind and thoughtful and SEXY AF introvert, who’s had a thing for Chloe since they were kids in high school. I loved their sizzling attraction, but they couldn’t be together that way because, reasons.

Their friendship grew into one of the most adorable relationships. I loved them together. Even when they had to fake it. They were delightfully charming and made me smile from beginning to end.

Their banter, the ease of their conversations...they were each other’s person. Their chemistry sparked like fireworks and their sexual tension was thick and delicious.

This story was sexy and sweet and fun, yet with emotional moments that pulled at my heartstrings. Do you love well-written RomComs with shy but sexy heroes who fall for the beautiful, outgoing, and sassy heroine? Then I highly recommend Sugarlips!

Beefcakes does not have to be read to enjoy this. Although if you did, it would make Sugarlips that much better.

The last 10% dropped this from an average ‘nothing special’ to an irritating waste of time. Even the epilogue was the most underwhelming “HEA” I’ve ever listened to. Skim, skim, SKIP!

Book-Challenge 2021: Book 31

Another cute story!

I'm not sure what to say anymore, because I feel like I sound like a broken record every time I write my reviews for books. But well ...

We met Chloe and Liam in the previous book of the series already. So it feels like you actually know them right from the start. Therefore I'll recommend to really read the series in order. It's not necessary, but simply for better understanding.

Chloe and Liam just clicked for me. They clicked in the previous book and now they just ... there was NO WAY for them to not be together. They simply belonged. And even though they seemed like the total opposites, they just complimented each other very much.

Big bonus points for involving the characters from Beefcakes. I always love hearing back from previous couples. :)

All in all a cute read. If there's ever a book about the rest of the Evan's siblings, I'll read it. :)

The premise was okay, but I didn’t enjoy the execution.

I’m not a fan of alternating POV. Especially when it alternates between male and female voices. I think it’s difficult for someone who identifies as one gender to write from the perspective of another.

Chloe’s name brand dropping is a bit much. I don’t understand why the brands are relevant to the story.

I really don’t understand why it’s such a big deal to Elaine that Liam and Chloe not date. In the grand scheme of things shouldn’t her sister’s happiness come before possible future discomfort Elaine may experience? And then she finally acquiesced to them dating and when they start to have sex Chloe says it can only be one night? WHAT. They both like each other and are friends, why? Relationships are built on those two principles. How is only sleeping together once not going to fuck everything up?

Information feels contradictory. Why can’t Chloe be relied on to be professional? She apparently was successful prior to quitting work when she got engaged. Chloe can’t cook breakfast or anything outside of a crock pot, but she’s magically making casserole and breakfast for her sister later in the story.

Things seem to magically happen to fit the pace of the story or create contention. But how it happened doesn’t usually make sense or feel authentic.

Chloe’s sister doesn’t tell anyone why she broke up with Liam’s brother and then suddenly a week later drops that bomb of a reason (that by the way makes no sense) and Chloe has no reaction? No questioning of why?

Despite lots of things happening quickly, the story drags so much and generally makes little sense.

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a standalone, but I highly recommend reading Beefcakes first. This story stands on it's own, but the timeline of this story overlaps at times with that of Beefcakes. Having read Beefcakes first will help you to understand what is going on with Elaina and Neil and how they resolved their relationship issues. We don't see any of that on the page here, they kind of breakup, fall apart, and are back together with no explanation in this book. If you have read Beefcakes you don't need any explanation as to what happened, if you haven't you may be feel like you are a little bit in the dark with that situation.

This follows Liam and Chloe, siblings of the main characters of Beefcakes. Chloe has just found out that her fiance has been cheating on for the duration of their relationship, despite the fact that she quite her job and tried to be the perfect woman for him. In an effort to ease her breakup pain, local baker, Liam brings her some donuts on the night of her breakup. Liam and Chloe then somehow end up running a food truck together selling all manner of comfort food that one might want after a messy breakup. Liam has always wanted to run a food truck, but he's been busy helping keep his family's bakery afloat, but once Chloe gets and idea she is determined to make it happen. Their truck starts to gain some media attention, and everyone assumes they are also a couple. Faking a relationship with each other isn't that difficult, but when they both start to have feelings for each other things start to spiral out of control.

One of the character development arcs I loved about Beefcakes that is also present in this book is characters not changing who they are to be in a relationship. Chloe is known around town as being "Tasmanian Chloe", because she enters into a situation bringing chaos with her. With her ex-fiancé, she tried to put her chaotic alter ego in a box, changing up her appearance to suit his more sedate tastes and expectations of his future wife. Everyone around her thinks she is impulsive and leaves nothing but destruction in her wake, everyone but Liam. Liam doesn't want her to change her ways or her appearance, he is drawn to her unpredictability and passion. Liam on the other hand is pretty reliable, helping to run his families bakery and never asking for help. He has help and co-dependency confused and it takes him some time to come to terms that it is OK to need people and let them share your burdens. Watching the two of them come to terms with some of their flaws and fall in love was really sweet, and also fun. Their banter was really great. I also loved that Chloe finally came to terms with who she really was. She shed the baggage of the cheating fiancé, the terrible best friend, and found a job that really suited her.

Overall this was a really fun story with a really fun setting. I really liked the food truck setting. I myself love to bake and secretly would love to open my own bakery. For now I just do it for fun and my family. I really loved these two characters and hope to see more about the Evans family. I really want to know what Finn is getting up to at all those appointments and I'd love to see a book about Addy.

Sugarlips is the second book to Beefcakes. I think I have heard of Beefcakes but never got around to reading it. I personally think this book can be read as a stand-alone. Situations and people are explained well enough that I didn’t need to read the first book.
I really enjoyed reading Chloe and Liams story. It started for Liam when they were sixteen and they ended up kissing. Now Chloes sister is/was dating Liams brother. Chloe finds out that her fiancée has been cheating on her so Liam goes and checks on her. Which starts there friendship all over again.
Chloe seemed a little naive but she was funny, good hearted, and just wanted to be a great friend to Liam.
Liam was a cool guy that was falling in love with his best friend and dealing with his mother’s bakery and the new food truck etc etc. So many things were going on in this story and lots of people but thankfully it wasn’t hard to follow. I loved the idea of the bakery and the food truck. I couldn’t imagine dealing with all that plus baking but they pulled it off and pulled it off well!
I do wish that things hadn’t been so back and forth with Liam and Chloe and Dan. I felt like Dan didn’t need to be in this story as much as he was but I was definitely surprised by the ending. I really did not like Tanja at all and I don’t fully understand how Chloe could stay friends with her. Also appreciated that this story had an epilogue!

Beefcakes was adorable and it was a no brainer to choose this one immediately, this book doesn't start where the first book stops which felt refreshing. Neils's brother Liam and Elena's sister Chloe are the odd pair designed to be together. he is the reserved chef and she is the bubbly party girl. They had a very brief attraction in their high school but they couldn't chase it( you will know why when you read it)

when Chloe's fiance cheated on her and called off their wedding her sister Elena sent Liam with cupcakes to help her mope but instead of leaving after dropping the goods off they talked and watched tv all night. they are both aware that they couldn't pursue a romantic relationship with each other so they decide to become friends. when Elena and Neil break up their friendship becomes difficult but their bond is much more strong and the universe really wants them together.

Liam and Chloe end up starting a business together and they had to pose as a couple to attract more social media light, they are falling for each other but they couldn't admit it and is not able to move past the friendzone but after a while, they realise they are meant to be then a toxic firecracker friend make problems. And ...

I really loved this book, even better than beefcakes it was so entertaining and goofy, that I might have to change my dislike toward friends to lovers trope, some of the best books I have recently been on this trope.

I loved the central characters as well as the characters from the other book, it was great to see each couple's relationship from the different perspective .this is definitely a comfort read and re-read material.

Interesting thing with this book is it runs simultaneously with the story in Beefcakes, which is unusual, but I loved it. So first off, you really need to read Beefcakes first, which you’ll love, so you can get the whole picture of this story. I love anything that has to do with romance and baking, I bake a lot in my spare time, so I loved that Liam was the chef/baker in this story, and that Chloe was the one who needed to be taught. This book has a lot of really funny parts in it, I absolutely loved the chemistry between these two characters, and although I thought the issues Chloe has were a bit long winded, when these two got together it was heart stopping hotness! The Dump Truck business was hysterical and fun to read and the emotional part of the cheating fiancé and the Evans’s mom having cancer brings this very well rounded story together, and the ending, OMG, LOVED it!. Would love to have a story on Finn’s secret that he seems to be hiding, and of course more on Neil and Lainey.

This is a fun, entertaining read that doesn’t take itself too seriously, balanced with enough poignant, touching moments to give the reader's emotions a delicious workout. And once I understood that the timeline of this book runs concurrently with Liam and Lainey's story in Beefcakes, things made a lot more sense.

Chloe Dyker is all set to be the perfect trophy wife, having quit her job to plan the perfect wedding, when she learns her less-than-perfect fiancé is cheating. Enter Liam Evans, sent by Chloe's sister, Lainey, with comfort doughnuts. Which do not mix well with tequila. Which leads to Chloe's declaration of BFF status with Liam, as well as fulfilling his dream of opening a food truck.

I adore Chloe and Liam so much! They’re as different as night and day but balance each other perfectly. He's the calm to her chaos and she pushes him out of his comfort zone to take chances that make his life better. Quirky, charming, hilarious, and heartfelt, this one strikes the perfect balance to make it a phenomenal beachy, summer read!

Chloe Dyker and Liam Evans went to high school together, but Chloe was popular and loved by everyone, while Liam kept his nose in a book and was more serious and introverted. However, they shared a kiss once, and both of them wanted more, but it never happened. Chloe has had a string of loser boyfriends ever since. After her fiancé cheats on her, Liam brings her cupcakes and donuts and hangs around watching romantic comedies with her, and is generally just being a good friend to her while she adjusts to her new single reality.

This story is intriguing in several ways. It explores themes like loyalty, what makes a good friend, needing others versus wanting them around, sacrifice for those you care about, and following your dreams. These themes add complexity to the storyline, and they add depth to the protagonists. The pace starts off a little slow, but picks up and stays steady shortly thereafter. The tension is interspersed with funny situations at times. All-in-all, this story should delight most readers, and is a fun and introspective read!

I really enjoyed this story. The characters were relatable and believable. The story was well developed and engaging.

Chloe Dyker's fiance cheated on her so she ended the relationship. She calls her bestie and sister but neither is available to console her. Her sister asks her boyfriend's brother to help. Liam Evans brings cupcakes and donuts and ends up spending the night watching rom coms and drinking with her. Chloe decides he is her new best friend. As they are getting drunk and talking he tells her his dream was to open a food truck. Chloe buys a fixer upper food truck and the two become business partners. When they are interviewed by a local new team they come across as romantic partners and keep up the charade as it helps their business. Eventually they fall in love and get their HEA after overcoming their personal baggage.

What a fun story. I love baking so I was excited to read this book. Liam and Chloe have observed each other from a far for many years. Liam comes to Chloe’s rescue following a horrible break-up but he keeps his feelings to himself. Chloe is attracted to Liam but doesn’t want to get into another relationship and she’s keep a promise to her sister who just broke up with Liam’s brother.

As they enter a business arrangement together they do their best to keep it professional and not let their emotions/feelings/desires get in the way. Through their business relationship they learn a lot about each other, their feelings for each other continue to grow and they build each other’s confidence in their abilities as entrepreneurs.

This is a fun, sweet and entertaining book that will have you cheering for both of them to reach their desired success in business and in love.

I requested an arc and I am proving my honest review.

Cute Story . . .

Chloe was dumped by her cheating fiancé and is alone and miserable. So her sister came to the rescue asking Liam, her future brother-in-law, to deliver some sugared heaven to Chloe to get her through the pain and raise her spirits like only sugar can. Naturally, with such a delivery coupled with an abundance of alcohol, her declaration that Liam Evans was her best friend seemed fulfilled. From there, they decide to open a food truck together, called “The Dump Truck”, with the idea of providing late-night junk food deliveries to the broken-hearted. When the media gets involved, and spreads their misinformation that Liam and Chloe are madly in love, the business takes off and the rest is history! Will Liam and Chloe really become a couple? Is there a HEA waiting in their future?

This is a crazy fun story that you won’t want to miss. Grab your copy and get to see the characters in action!

When Liam goes to comfort the sister of his brother's girlfriend after she breaks off her engagement, Chloe declares that they will be best friends. So when they decide to start up a food truck for the broken hearted with lots of sweet treats and donuts, they start to spend more and more time together. And the more they spend, the more they realize how much they actually need each other. But when Liam's brother and Chloe's sister break up, Elaina, makes Chloe swear that she will not get into a relationship with Liam. But when a national TV network does a story on the Dump Truck food truck, and the lovebirds that run it, Liam and Chloe find their 'pretend' relationship is slowly becoming less pretend. But with her promise to Elaina still on her mind, Chloe has to decide how far her relationship with Liam can go. Great story.

Oh my sweetness!! Sugarlips may be the second book in Katana’s Beefcakes series but it can be read as a stand-alone (I know because somehow I missed reading Beefcakes...I am going to remedy that real fast!) It was a laugh out loud and completely sweet read!

Chloe’s heart had just been broken, what was better than some alcohol to drown her sorrows? How about a delivery of sweets from a hot guy? What started out as a favor soon turned into a budding friendship. But when Chloe decided they needed to start a food truck, would she take their new relationship too far?

There were so many funny moments. I loved everything about it. It was such a great storyline with equal parts humor and swoon, with just a little angst sprinkled in! I can’t wait to see what else Katana has in store for us!!

What a fun, laugh-out-loud, friends to lovers story revolving around Liam Evans and Chloe Dyker. I must admit that I have not read Beefcakes yet but I did not feel lost for not having read that book before Sugarlips. And now I am interested in seeing how the story lines from both books fit together. Katana Collins has done a wonderful job in showing us that relationships are not easy but involve many emotions for everyone to end up right where they belong. Both characters go through many ups and downs during the course of their story with friends and family right there along for the ride. Plus there is lots of baking involved that will make you want to pull out the cookware and start making your own donuts. I hope that we continue to see more of Liam and Chloe in future books.

Chloe is to be married but before the wedding finds out her fiancé is cheating and she calls it off! She calls her BFF and Elaina her sister but can’t get an answer. Elaina as Liam or boyfriend’s brother who also runs their moms bakery to send her some pastries to cheer her up. He takes over donuts and cupcakes and they end up watching comedy shows and drinking together. They decided to open the food truck that he’d aLways wanted and she thinks it should have junk food for people who are getting over breakups. It goes very well and when interviewed they come of as a couple. Will they become one like their siblings?

I received an ARC from the author thru Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review. Although this can be read as a standalone in the series, I think you would enjoy it even more after reading Beefcakes. Chloe and Liam are opposites in many ways but complete each other like puzzle pieces. She has had the rug pulled out from under her by a worthless fiance. Liam comes along with just the right amount of baked goods and friendship. The next thing you know they have a good truck and have fallen hard for each other. The story is full of humor, friendship, family and love. I really enjoyed this book. The characters were great together and I liked the tie in with Beefcakes.

Liam is helping out in his mom’s bakery with his brothers after her cancer diagnosis. Chloe is the sister of Liam’s brother’s girlfriend. We see these two in book one and when I found out they were the main characters in book two I was excited.
Chloe’s character is super fun. She’s witty and sweet, but always has jumped from relationship to relationship.
Liam hasn’t really had time for a relationship because he’s working all the time.
When he decides to follow his dream of owning a food truck, Chloe dives in to help. Their relationship starts to become more than friends but Chloe is convinced she needs to stand on her own for a bit. Liam is used to doing everything and doesn’t like to need anyone.
The two of them have some things to work out and some compromises to make.

Another Terrific Baking-Inspired book

This one is Liam and Chloe’s story, siblings of Neil and Elaina respectively from Beefcakes. This one is just terrific, full of messy break-up scenes, back-stabbing friends, infamy and tears - but done in such a way the there’s always a glimmer of hope. Because of course there’s hope for romance, and the sweetest happily ever after for these two “besties” who become more. Never shallow or trite, Ms Collins portrays real and messy emotions, from angry tears to happy tears and everything in between. Just a great story...sigh... hopefully there’s more Beefcakes to come!?

Follow Chloe and Liam as they form the Dump Truck food truck, full of comfort food for people who have had bad breakups. Chloe had recently found her ex cheating on her so she knew what was needed. A rumor puts them as more than friends, which boosts their clientele. Total opposites that even each other out, they slowly begin a relationship that fires up a lot more than banter. Lots of surprises and twists in this storyline. The characters are terrific, dealing with a lot of baggage. Loved the food truck idea as a locale. Great ending.

Eh..both these characters drove me a bit nuts and I honestly did not feel the heat between them. It wasn't a bad story, just not one that made me want to shout from the rooftops I loved it and not one I'd read again.

H and h shared a kiss in high school that was it and after h fiance breaks up with her (been cheating on her for a long time), H delivers cupcakes and donuts to her at the request of her sister who is dating his brother. They go in to business together and things get complicated and they go back and forth about 10 times until they finally figure things out.

Trying to decide if I go on with this series at this point.

This was a funny book with characters that feel like real people. There was a part where she was helping decorate unicorn cupcakes and it was not quite the masterpiece... haha. He says “This looks like some sort of deranged donkey from the land of Oz… not a unicorn. If I bring cupcakes like this to sweet little Emma Davey’s fourth birthday party, those kids will have nightmares.” I laughed out loud at this and in several more parts, very good book.

Loved It

Liam and Chloe, brother and sister of Neil and Elaina from Beefcakes, the first in series. Liam and Chloe have had feelings for each since school days and they team up together for a Food Truck business, continuing the sweet family tradition of yummy deliciousness. Liam is a kind, hardworking hottie helping encourage the beautiful Chloe, who has been bruised by a cheating ex. Their business and their attraction to each other grows quickly in this wonderful story of second chances and besties to besties in love!!!!

I liked Chloe and Liam. They were entertaining and Chloe kept things moving along. I feel like she was the main force of the fast paced plot because she just pushed things forward regardless of preparation so no time was wasted planning. I liked the balance they gave each other. I didn’t find them super develop after the falling out, they claimed too, but it felt slightly underdeveloped. I also feel like it didn’t pair 100% with the epilogue of the first book timelinewise, I figured there would be a larger gap in time, but maybe I also missed some jumps or misunderstood.

I loved this friends to lovers story! Chloe was adorable from her first scene even if she was totally heartbroken. I loved how easily she initiated the friendship between her and Nick and how he handled her completely different than everyone else in her life.

I loved the food truck and all the shenanigans that came along with Chloe owning and running a business. She is a great business woman and adds her own flair to all of her ideas!
