The Spirit King is dead but not forgotten, and young dragon rider Pieter’s wounds run deep. His dragon Gloriox is determined to help him heal, but when their travels bring them to the land of Chamenos, they find that trouble has gotten there first. Gloriox’s niece has been captured, and every other dragon is gone.
With their newfound friends Ziggy and Rosa, Pieter and Gloriox will need to scour Chamenos in order to find Gloriox’s niece and face the tyrant king, who’s determined to find the first dragon’s bones and will show no mercy in achieving his goals. Yet, there’s more to the tyrant king’s dark magic than it seems, and Pieter may be the only one who can stop him.
Things won’t be so easy with dark spirits in the air and Pieter’s overwhelming fear of losing his companions to unnecessary violence. Some battles must be fought, though, no matter how much Pieter longs for safety. If he can’t overcome his fear of action, his hesitation could be just as deadly as any evil spell.
Danger lurks while ancient powers sleep, but if the powers awaken, Chamenos – and the world – will pay the price.
Ava Richardson writes epic page-turning Young Adult Fantasy books. She creates lovable characters and drops them into intricate worlds that are barely contained within your eReader. Ava has written 21 YA dragon fantasy series, including her bestselling series Return of the Darkening and her recent series, Destia's Dragon Shifter War.
She grew up on a steady diet of fantasy and science fiction books handed down from her two big brothers – and despite being dog-eared and missing pages, she loved escaping into the magical worlds that those authors created. Her favorites were the ones about dragons; where they’d swoop, dive and soar through the skies of these enchanted lands.
Pieter. He is so sweet and vulnerable but he’s also such a strong willed boy. The love his dragon has for him is beautiful and their connection is deep. While I liked Rosa and Ziggy a lot, I would have enjoyed a little more time with just Pieter and Gloriox alone to get a better feel of their relationship. It couldn’t be stronger and Gloriox is extremely protector his dragon rider. This is such a refreshing read offering so much more than romance like you find in most fantasy books.
Audiobook - excellent and consistent narration. I like the use of accents to define which part of the world the speaker is from. Story - good world building and several ways of using magic, which was intriguing. I haven't read anything by this author before, even so this works well as the start of a new series without having read the previous books.
This is book one of The Last Dragonriders series and the main characters are Pieter from Pothena and his dragon Gloriox, who have travelled to Chamenos, to a change in life. Pieter had to join in the war against the Spirit King, at a young age, with his brother Kahn and sister Desiree Black. Both were so much better at wielding magic than Pieter and he almost lost them both. He has always thought of himself as the weakest sibling and a bit of a failure compared to them. He needs to heal from all the horrors he has seen and find his own purpose in life. Gloriox gets him to travel to Chamenos to visit his niece Spyder, but soon gets news that she has been captured by the tyrant king Skotar, and all other dragons have fled the realm. Whilst trying to get information on where Spyder is being held, Pieter meets a twelve year old girl called Ziggy and she takes him back to her house, where she lives with her older sister Rosa. They lost their parents just a couple of years ago and Rosa has tried to keep Ziggy safe from all the laws and taxes being piled on by the new king. Pieter finds out that magic in this realm is vastly different than the magic in his own and he finally manages to wield much more powerful magic under this new style!
He has placed both Ziggy and Rosa in danger upon using his new magic skills and alerting the king’s guards. He has to call in Gloriox to rescue them from the town as all exits are blocked by guards. They find that this new king is searching for the first dragon’s bones, something that should not be disturbed, being scared to all dragons. What king Skotar wants with the bones, can’t be anything good! Skotar is aiming to destroy the bones, saying visions he has received show him what would happen to his realm, if he did not. He has an evil partner, in Lady Evalaia, the overseer of his work camps. When Pieter gets mixed up with the King and Evalaia, he feels the presence of an evil being which seems to almost be controlling the king. Pieter, Rosa, Ziggy and Gloriox must save Spyder from the King’s torturer and this shadow of evil that seems to hang over him. They need to try and reach the tomb of the first dragon before King Skotar, but he is accompanied by Evalaia and an army of animated dragon bones. Pieter will have to overcome his lack of confidence in himself and his magic, to be able to keep Ziggy and Rosa safe, as well as their dragons. He must battle users of the Dark Arts, which cannot be combatted with normal magic, without dire consequences for all around them. An ancient evil is about to be awoken and Pieter and his team may not be strong enough to stop it. What he will do next, is going to influence the future of the realm. An interesting introduction to a story with a couple of favourite characters from a previous series, adding in a few new ones to the mix, as more danger arrives for the young and reluctant hero dragonrider. I look forward to seeing what they do next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout ad I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Audiobook Review: This book starts out very simply, where the hero believes he is facing one task, but it soon mushrooms into something much larger and darker than he anticipated. The author does an excellent job creating and describing this fantasy world. I love it when authors can make a mythic world come to life as she did. This book follows the path of the classic hero's journey, and I loved the allies our hero picked up along the way, including a romantic interest! The book had a few surprising twists and turns, which I always love to see in fiction. I'm a voracious reader, so I like it when an author takes me down a path I was not expecting. I particularly like the bit about Ziggy and Spider, as well as the surprise about the villain at the end. Everything goes much deeper and broader than Pieter and his tiny band of allies could imagine. This world is magical. Actually, it has different types, and I was fascinated by the type that Pieter learned about early in the story based on powerful emotions. What a great concept! The ending brilliantly set up the next book in the story, and I can't wait to start listening to it. The narrator did a fantastic job of giving distinct voices to each of the characters. I loved how characters from a particular region have Scottish accents! The dragon characters were as well done as the human ones. I particularly liked Pieter's dragon Gloriox, who certainly comes across as a wise old soul with much affection and compassion for his young human rider.
I received a promo code for this book, but that did not affect my review.

Remarkable job Ava, thanks for sharing this amazing thrill with us.
It's my 1st time reading any of Ava's books and I must say, I found the experience very pleasant. The story revolves around a very insecure young man, who has faced unbelievable horrors in a war. Even though the war was won, the scars it left were deep and draining. Pieter and his dragon Glimiox, set out to find Spyder, Glimiox's niece on another continent, in hopes of being able to help Pieter understand himself and his worth and purpose. They have no idea that a simple journey of discovery would be one of immense danger. Pieter is saved by a precocious young girl, Ziggy but before long, they are all running for their lives. As events crystallize what they are facing becomes clear, Pieter has to delve deep within himself to try prevent a catastrophic occurrence but he fails and an evil is unleashed. All is not lost however, and the newly discovered friends strengthen Pieter's resolve in trying to defeat yet another enemy. I found the storyline interesting, the characters evolve nicely, especially young Ziggy, who discovers she is more than just a precocious little girl. A fun read, looking forward to reading more of the 2 dragons and their 3 human friends and their next adventures I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review
This is the first story in the new series 'The Last Dragonriders'. Our tale begins after the successful conclusion of the war with the Spirit King. Our hero, Pieter, fought valiantly alongside his siblings in the war in Pothena but at its conclusion, his wounds run deep. Doubting his purpose Pieter travels with his dragon, Gloriox, to Chamenos hoping to find purpose and healing. Gloriox has happy memories of Chamenos and a niece he hasn't seen in a long time. As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that things are not what they seem and Gloriox's memories are way out of touch. In Pothena Pieter is the youngest of three siblings and seems to be constantly in their shadow. In Chamenos he is going to have to rely on his wits and determination to see him, his newfound friends and his beloved dragon to safety. Not an easy task when a deadly evil is waiting to pounce and Pieter is questioning his own talents and skills.
The story is fast-paced with exciting twists and turns. Ava's character development works well and the story is very, very readable. I highly recommend this book. I struggled to put it down once I started. Be warned!

As always, I love books by this author. A great start to a new series that stars a character from another one.
Pieter Roser is the younger brother of Desiree Black. He has decided to travel to Chamenos in hopes of learning more about magic and find a place he might feel like he belongs. When he gets there he finds that the land is not like what his dragon has told him it would be like. The first town he comes to he finds himself in trouble and is rescued by a young girl. Nothing seems right, the people seem to be suspicious of everyone, and no one seems ready to help anyone else.
There are wanted posters for dragons and Pieter manages to find out from his rescuer that most people have turned their backs on the dragons. This girl knows of one dragon who has recently been captured and wants to rescue the dragon but she needs help to do so. It also seems like magic is outlawed as well, which of course gets Pieter into more trouble. The guards chase Pieter and his rescuer, along with her sister out of town.
This begins their adventure to find and rescue the dragon prisoner and to stop an evil person from destroying the land. I definitely want to read the next book.
A new series but also a continuation, Dracwyn, Part II. We see Pieter, the youngest brother of Dez and Kahn and his bonded dragon Gloriox, as he comes into his own. Going to a new country after the defeat of the spirit king he faces a new challenge and definitely rises to the occasion with new found friends and Gloriox' niece. Rescuing Spyder from a new threat they continue to unravel the mystery and evil in the country named Chamenos. A lot of action and the appearance of the old threat the Draznar. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book!!

The follow-up to the first three books of "The Last Dragon Rider" is a story about Pieter, Dez's brother. He is the brother that they thought would not be a big help in the war against the Spirit king. But with his Dragon bond to Gloriox, they travel to find Gloriox niece in a far away land. New trouble is found and a new adventure begins. Only this time, Pieter does not have his siblings to help. He must rely on 2 new friends and a second dragon to help fight this new upcoming war. This is a must read if you are a fan of Ava Richardson book.

This series is new but a spin off from Dracwyn, Part II so I suggest reading it first to fully immerse yourself (it isn't completely necessary) but you will have a greater knowledge of the world and characters.
As the book begins Pieter and his bonded dragon Gloriox is finding his way after the defeat of the spirit king. I really love the growth in his character and he is definitely a favorite of mine.
This book is action packed from start to finish and Draznar has returned making the tension rise a few knotches. Absolutely love seeing this old villain returning to cause more havoc. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book!!
Dragon defender is a masterpiece of the fantasy, young adult coming-of-age genre. Ava Richardson has outdone herself again weaving together a magnificent tale. Not only has she created a story of self discovery in the face of overwhelming challenges but has done so with an already known character. The main character from this story was a secondary one from one of her previous novels. Now she explores his journey of growth from a young uncertain Man into a defender of the dragons.

Pieter fresh from the victory over the spirit king, needs a place to find himself and heal from the trauma and loss for that war. A trip to Chameros with Gloriox his Dragon seemed just the thing, but things have changed, a tyrant now rules and powerful dark magic is on he rise Loved it, couldn't put it down. Wonderful story with great characters. I love Ava Richardson s world with true heroes with fears and doubts, mighty enemies and dragons. I have already started book 2.
Ava Richardson has done it again - an awesome book! I am loving the beginning of Pieters story, Gloriox is brilliant and I am liking the new characters. I am looking forward to the next instalment in the adventure.

Finally a dragon based saga that is well and cleanly written. Although predictable, the story is good, the characters are young and intelligent, and the plot has enough action to keep the reader entertained.
First of all if you like dragons then you are in the right place. There is plenty of action and suspense. I have already bought the other books in the series so I am anticipating they will be as good as this one.
This book has interesting characters, adventure, good versus evil, hero and heroines, good story line, magic, dragons, undying loyalty, bonding of dragon and rider. Could not stop reading. On to next book in this series
The characters were strong, as was the story line. I very much enjoyed it. I will definitely be finishing the series, I love imaging myself somewhere else since my life by necessity is a little boring.
It's a refreshing take on the struggles of one's personal growth and owning the consequences that go along with finding your own way in the world! Love the new girls...
After the bitter war they have just come through, the young dragon rider Pieter is having a difficult time adjusting. His dragon, Gloriox, will do whatever possible to help him heal, but it seems things just won’t settle down. When they travel to Chamenos, they discover that the troubles have already begun. Gloriox’s niece has been captured, and all of the other dragons are gone. Now the search is on to find Gloriox’s niece. They will have to face the tyrant king’s dark magic and this time Pieter may be the only one who can stop him. Is Pieter ready for another battle? Will his weak magic strengthen to meet the challenge?
I just love dragon stories! Gloriox has quite a personality and, of course, is my favorite. The narrator for the audiobook version is Amelia Hugh. She does an excellent job with the voices to make it easy for the listener to get an accurate idea of what each character is like and to feel the tension of the storm raging around them and the difficulties they encounter. It helps to set the mood and is an enjoyable, hands-free way to “read” the exciting book.
A story full of magic, dragons, courage & evil. Such great characters and plenty of action. I think my favorite character was Ziggy. Her bouncy personality & wit was awesome. Peter became involved with Ziggy and Rosa after Ziggy saved him from the kings soilders. He then helped them save Spider, a dragon who was captured and was being tortured for information. Their quest was a wild ride and made for a great story. Perfect for any fantasy lover.
