Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

Cue the creepy background music and grab a comfort teddy bear to clutch during the more hair-raising moments and prepare to become lost in a page-turning marathon of suspense.

Nothing edgier than a stalker type story...unless it's a serial killer stalker type story. Bwahahaha! Barritt draws on every last nerve ending as she unravels clues and casts doubt on many secondary characters who might just be the suspect. I thought I'd clued in to who that was at one point but then she had me doubting myself until it was nearly too late to warn Harper. Not that she listened to me anyway when I screamed, "Noooo, doooonnnn'tttt....."

Enjoyed the dynamics between Luke and Harper -- from foes to allies to something so much more. And I loved the way the author set us up for future books in the series starring Luke's siblings who have all had complicated, angsty lives. Really looking forward to continuing with the Fog Lake Mysteries series.

I listened to the audible edition of this book -- narrated by Sandy Rustin who did a great job of bringing these characters to life and adding an extra thrill in the way she delivered the angsty parts. :-)

"He was worse than a ghost. He was real."

Young women are turning up dead in Fog Lake, Tennessee and the killer is as illusive as a wisp of smoke. Sheriff Luke Wilder has very few clues, if any at all, to follow up on .. . . until a curious bit of information from an outsider comes to his attention.

Harper Jennings is sure that she knows who is on a killing spree in the idyllic small town of Fog Lake; more than likely it's the same person who tried to take her life just three years prior. It's a crazy story, she knows that, but it's worth a chance if it keeps others away from the edge of a very sharp knife.

Be prepared to sit on the edge of your seat! Christy Barritt is off to a great start in her new series; "Fog Lake Mysteries".

Over the last year, I have found myself a big Christy Barritt fan after devouring "The Worst Detective Ever" series (my personal favorite) as well as a book each of the "Squeaky Clean Mysteries" and the "Lantern Beach Mysteries" (will definitely devour the Lantern Beach Mysteries at some point since the first book was enjoyable). Christy Barritt has a knack for writing books that are clean, suspenseful, humorous, quirky, quick, and downright entertaining. My only complaint in reading some of her books is that she tends to recycle character types (goofy, clumsy heroine; handsome, rugged hero) and settings (the beach, though I love beach settings!) in a way that make each unique series bleed together and feel a little too similar. So I was very excited when I saw the "Fog Lake Mysteries" series coming out and early reviews revealing that it was more gritty than previous works. And for that, I definitely agree.

The Fog Lake Mysteries are definitely darker and grittier and Edge Of Peril features a sadistic serial killer preying on a small mountain town (not a beach, haha!). I enjoyed the Harper character as she didn't possess the goofy, clumsy characteristics of other Barritt heroines (which, while enjoyable, can sometimes cause some eye rolling). I also enjoyed Sheriff Luke, though once again we are treated to a romance between the heroine and the hunky, rugged law enforcement hero (sigh, deduct half a star). And of course, they hate each other at first which is how all successful real world relationships begin!

Another thing that added to the depth of this book was many references to spiritual and faith aspects. I found that they were not heavy-handed and added realistically to the storyline. Christy Barritt successfully inserts many faith-filled quotes that I appreciated such as: "There’s always hope. It may not seem like it. But in those times when it seems impossible, we’ve got to hold onto that truth even more.” I also felt like the overall writing in Edge Of Peril was crisper and of better quality, and this is coming from someone who is a huge fan in her writing style! She easily adapts a darker, grittier style that didn't sound forced or cliched. It didn't have the humor of other books like The Worst Detective Ever series, but that humor would not have fit in this style of writing.

I ended up rating this 4 stars out of 5, deducting half a star for another book series where the romance is cliched (see above) and deducting another half star since I figured out pretty early on who the killer was. But all in all, and even with guessing the killer, I still enjoyed the writing style, the atmosphere of the small mountain town, the characters, and the satisfying ending (minus the romance and epilogue ending). So this is definitely a series I will continue to read and hope more come soon.

Edge of Peril is a bit darker and grittier than the usual Christy Barritt book but by no means does that make it any less good. It was awesome and, wow, what a page turner!

The very first sentence perfectly set the mood for the entire book and pulled me right in. The truly twisted villain and the constant nerve wracking guessing game of who The Watcher actually was had my heart racing. The pace was lightning fast and had me speeding through the pages as quickly as possible.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this new series and can't wait to see what unfolds next! Highly recommended!

Don't read this alone and at night. It will creep you out. Harper thinks she knows who the serial killer is in this mountain town. She thinks it is her adopted brother but how can it be? He was supposedly killed in a traffic accident. She thinks something is fishy is going on and he did not really die in the accident. Lots of twists and turns in this book that kept me reading until the end of the book! I hope the author writes some more books in this series soon.

Definitely a different story for the typical Barritt novel, BUT I loved it. I really enjoy reading stories with a serial killer who keeps up the killing. I love watching the heroine run for her life. In this story, Barritt has the heroine mention who she thinks did it and then she left you guessing for the rest of the story if the heroine was correct. The book moved at a fast pace. I had a really hard time putting the book down. I can't wait to see what else Barritt writes in this series.

This is my new favorite series from Christy Barritt! (In the interest of full disclosure, every new series from Barritt is my favorite . . . and then it becomes a co-favorite series.)

Highly recommended!

A serial killer lurking in a small town. A sheriff under pressure to catch him. And a reporter risking her life to help. Can they stop him once and for all?

The mystery was my favorite part of this story. And the isolated setting really added to the suspense.

Christy Barritt did a great job of giving each possible culprit a believable reason to be suspected. I didn’t see the The Watcher’s identity coming, although looking back it does make sense.

While Luke and Harper’s romance was more of a subplot, they still had some cute moments. Harper looking out for Luke (bringing him food, etc.) when he was so busy taking care of everyone else was especially sweet.

EDGE OF PERIL is one of Ms. Barritt's most recent releases. This is a mystery / suspense that is not part of a series -- or if it is it is the first book in a new series.

Harper hears about a serial killer in this small Tennessee town when a friend emails her about it. And Harper believes she knows just who it is - only problem is, her suspect is dead. But how can she convince the town sheriff that she knows the killer,

Luke is skeptical but with no other leads and no clues the killer could be a ghost. So he follows Harper's story - and then someone starts stalking Harper. Teasing her. Messing with her mind. And every day the threat gets greater.

Is Harper's outlandish theory right? Will they find the killer in time?

This story kept me guessing. I thought I had figured out who the killer was -- I was wrong. I had to keep reading to find out whodunit.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

Wow. Just wow.

I just finished this book, I started it about 3 hours ago. I was all "I'm just going to read a few pages" and then I sat down and read straight through it. Didn't get up to get a drink. Didn't go to the bathroom. Didn't walk the dog (sorry Russell) the book was just that good.

My heart is still pounding! The suspense was so perfect, so delicious, and I just loved the characters and the setting and absolutely everything about this story! I'm so mad I was such a cover snob, I could have been reading Christy Barritt for so long!

The only thing I do want to comment on as a downside is that there isn't really a faith plot to this story. The Christian is more undertone and subtle. The characters pray in their head during the hard points and the Lord is mentioned as the Creator once. If you're more into subtle inspirational Christian fiction this is definitely the book for you. However, I like mine to have a pretty strong faith storyline. Of course, like all Christian fiction it's completely clean and I did enjoy it despite the lack of a strong faith plot.

I will definitely be hunting down every Christy Barritt book I can find to read this upcoming year! 5 stars for a fabulous suspense that will keep you turning pages!

Wow, oh wow! Hang on to your seat because this book will take you for a ride and you will find you need to breathe again and stop your head from spinning!
One thing I realized right after I read the first chapter was, NEVER read books by this author late at night!
OH MY GOODNESS! With all her books I never know who the bad guy is until the end. I think I know and then don't! WOW! She really has fantastic skills!
It's also the kind of book where you REALLY don't want to put it down because you want to finish, but then you also don't want to pick it up because you don't know what's going to happen! The story just keeps getting more intense and scarier, sending shivers up and down the spine.
In this story, we find Harper, who has had some pretty tough things happen to her and she is living with constant fear in her life. No one will believe her. She comes to the town of Fog Lake in hopes of finally putting an end to her fears. She meets the local Sheriff, Luke, who is dealing with lots of loss in his life too. He has a hard time trusting others, yet feels responsible to protect everyone around him. Their lives are quickly intertwined and they soon find they need to depend on each other if they are ever going to solve this mystery.
You will get caught up with all the colorful descriptions and words Christy Barritt uses from the very first page to the very last.
“Thick and pregnant with gray moisture, wisps of air played hide-and-seek with anyone caught in its mist.”
Now doesn’t that just send chills down your spine? It really sets the stage for the name of the town, Fog Lake!
This story has so much packed into it, it was hard to breathe sometimes. My heart was pounding and my mind was going fast trying to figure out how it was all going to end.
If you LOVE mystery, suspense, and action, you will love this book!
This story will keep you on the edge of your seat until you finish it. Be prepared to not put it down, even to eat or sleep!
I received this book from the author to give an honest review. All opinions are my own. I highly recommend you pick this book up!

When it comes to writing deliciously creepy, look-over-your-shoulder whodunits, Christy Barritt always delivers. Edge of Peril is a quick read, partially due to the fact that it's impossible to put down! Some of this story wasn't very credible but I enjoyed it despite that fact. It IS fiction after all! With a sweet whisper of romance and complicated relationships, Edge of Peril is another great suspense read I highly recommend!

I’m always looking for a good Christian mystery/thriller. Given how few have (to this point) impressed me, I was beginning to think authors either weren’t interested in combining serial killers and faith or it was too difficult for them to do. This book proves they can not only coexist but do so in a compelling way. And bonus—there’s a little romance too.

I found the characters, rather than the plot, carried this story. Don’t get me wrong, the plot is interesting. A serial killer is tormenting Fog Lake, and a woman shows up claiming to know his identity AND be a survivor of an earlier attack. That description caught my attention in the description and held it throughout the book. But the protagonists are what captured my heart. Luke is Mr. Responsible, shouldering the burdens of his family and the town. Harper is a strong and resilient woman with an unflinching moral compass. The friction between them adds to the fun of watching them fall for each other under unrelenting pressure and constant danger. His siblings add the promise of further character development and exciting plots down the road, and at least one antagonist threatens to be a perpetual thorn in their sides as the series progresses.

This story progresses at a steady, comfortable pace. There are moments of heightened tension but no gory passages. The romance is light and clean, the physical aspects of which are barely on the page. And the faith element is present but in the background; readers disinterested in it will barely notice it’s there. All told, a strong start to the series. 4.5 stars.

This is a really good suspense novel! Christy Barritt always does such a good job! This is one of her more spooky ones, and I was here for it! This is the beginning of the Fog Lake series, and I will be returning for more. I read this book on Kindle and in audio. The narrator did ok, except she made the MMC sound like a 60-year-old Tennessee hermit, so I don't think I'll be doing that again.

Some favorite Quotes:
"His big reveal was coming soon. Act One would begin, and the curtains to a person’s worst nightmare would part, revealing him to his next victim."

"It’s almost like the fog is alive, isn’t it?”

This book is a closed-door romantic suspense with main characters that are Christian, so there are some enjoyable reminders of God's providence! Very refreshing! It is not trite or silly but mysterious and spooky.

I loved "Edge of Peril" by Christy Barritt so much! I have loved all of Christy Barritt's books, but I believe this one is my favorite, so far. This one had a little more suspense and mystery than her other books. Just when I thought I had the mystery figured out, it ended up changing!

I can't recommend this book enough. I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Thoroughly entertaining romantic suspense!

There was plenty of action in this story - a real page turner!

Super interesting concept that the main character came to warn police that she believes the serial killer is her brother!

Excellent character development especially of the woman who claims her brother is a killer, and the cop she starts to develop feelings for. I would have liked a little more detail about what they were attracted to in each other emotionally, though I did use my imagination to fill in any blanks.

The only other thing I wanted was for the main character's mother to learn the truth about her son and her daughter. I wanted some reconciliation between mother & daughter. Not sure if this series has more of these same characters and their story or not

I really liked this book. I didn’t think I was going to. The first few pages felt a bit stilted and strange. Now at the end, I wonder if that’s h9w the author wanted it to feel. It was a bit scary and I don’t read scary stuff at night so I had to put it down and even that is a good sign this was a good book. I thought I had it figured out a couple times and thought rather smugly, she made this too easy. Uh—I was wrong. Good mystery. Good dash of romance. Just a good story for a good price on Kindle. Now I’ll have to read the others in the series as they come out since this was #1. I’m hooked.

Fog creeps in

Every Christy Barritt book draws me in for the adventure of being in a different place being a different person long enough to solve a mystery, The characters reach out to pull you in to their town, their story. This has a truly frightening killer, a genius of the evil variety, but who is it? So many suspects! I'm glad this is book one and not a stand alone because I want to return to Fog Lake, TN to see if Harper and Luke can build a relationship.

Edge of Peril is a departure from Barritt's cozy mysteries. The fabulous character development is there, as well as the surprise twists and turns of the plot. Good luck figuring out who dunnit!
But Peril has a haunted, gothic vibe. The setting becomes a vital character itself, filling the story with intense atmosphere. Kind of makes you want to read this one when you're not alone!
Looking forward to the next book in this brand new series!

Edge of your seat suspense...
Courage isn’t the absence of fear. Journalist, Harper Jennings comes to a Smokey Mountain small town with a fear that she knows who has committed multiple murders. Will anyone believe that she was his victim years ago? As the mystery unfolds, Sheriff Luke Wilder doesn’t know whether or not to believe this newcomer. Is she telling the truth and if so, will she survive in this town? Thrilling mystery!

A bummer of a book.

I've read a lot of books by Christy Barritt. This one is the last. The main character always seems to be second guessing herself, stumbling around hoping she will get lucky before getting killed. Or some other bad thing happens.

She's a good writer and her books are clean. But it's time for a lead character who's favorite word isn't maybe. Clean writing and strong characters can go together.

Uhhh, wow. That was amazing, but terrible and scary at the same time! But I guess murder-mysteries are supposed to be like that. But still ...

I'll talk about the characters first ... they were really nice! (Ha, most of them were anyway.) Luke and Harper are really good together - once they figured that out, of course. I loved seeing Luke - he's the Sheriff in Fog Lake - in action and him and his team trying to figure out who's murdering these people.
Harper's a journalist, but she doesn't come to Fog Lake to do stories on the murders. No, there's another reason, but that's a spoiler. *coughs*
The rest of the characters really caught my interest as well .... Ansley, - Luke's sister who doesn't exactly like him that much - the deputies, Ian, and The Watcher (even though my interest wasn't really on him, more like I just really wanted to find out who he was! There was so many options!

So yeah, this is a murder mystery, and it's not about one murder. No, there's several. And unfortunately, most of the individuals who were killed had been ladies. And how they were killed wasn't very pleasant, but the author handled it well.

Content:
Okay, a lot of the content I have on here will be in spoilers because it is kind of creepy. And some of it will be real spoilers as well. So, click on them at your own risk!! ;)

The romance is handled very well! There was a few kisses, but the only details that were given was the fact their their lips met. There was also some feelings being felt.

So, I really did like this book, but it's one that I probably wouldn't re-read unless I was researching for a murder book I'd be writing! :D It definitely is kind of creepy, and I found myself reading more of it in the daytime, rather at night!

I recommend this for 18+ because of the content.

Fun fact: I signed up for the author's newsletter and that's how I found out about this book. It's a new release. She mentioned that it only took her a week (maybe two weeks) to write it! :O I was in shock! I can't even write one book in a month, let alone in a couple weeks! She said the idea came to her so quickly and vividly, she knew what she was going to write just like that. *shakes head in wonder* Maybe in time something like that will happen to me ... after all, I'm still an amateur!

This author desperately needs a proper Editor. Her obsession with lips…”licked her lips”, “her lips twisted together”, “rubbed her lips”, etc. is distracting and irritating. There are better ways to tell/show a character’s her emotions. In one sentence, she actually wrote, “Luke gave her a ‘huh?’ expression.” Incredibly lazy! Perfect example of tell instead of show. So much was wrong with the construction of this story. I wanted so badly to read this book and find out who The Watcher was and what role Billy might have played in this, but by page 227 I was done. Her character building needs a lot of work. Way too many shortcuts taken which resulted in a flat, 2 dimensional feeling of cardboard characters with no real depth despite the background given on each of them. No real connection formed for me with any of the characters. The progression of the plot felt forced. It felt like this was the writing of a first time author that self edited and self published. Disappointing.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing I dislike more than these “licked her lips” expressions and it’s not just this author. The last several books I’ve read, those of which came highly recommended by people, profusely overused this expression. One highly acclaimed author used it 25 times in her book. Fortunately, the rest of her prose and character development was so good that I still enjoyed the book. “Licking lips” seems to be a huge trend right now with authors and I wish it would stop. PLEASE just stop with the licking of lips!

Evil lurks in the shadows of Fog Lake...

If you are looking for a wild ride where little is as it seems and very few people are as they first appear, where a diabolical hides in plain sight within a seemingly charming mountain town, Edge Of Peril will be a sure hit for you.

I freely confess that I am a Christy Barritt fan, have been for several years, so it really wasn't a big surprise when I couldn't even wait a few days after downloading this book to my Kindle before I just HAD to pick it up and read it. Edge Of Peril was every bit as good as anticipated and Christy Barritt kept me guessing and second guessing myself from beginning to end. I finally had the killer narrowed down to two suspects but for the life of me I couldn't decide between them, turned out one of them was the right person which was a good thing because I was really starting to question my powers of deduction.

Dark, gritty, and delightfully chilling, Edge of Peril is another great read from one of the best authors of faith-filled romantic suspense. So, step into the foggy night to hunt for a killer...that is, if you dare....

(I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

I have read 3 of the Lantern Beach mysteries by this author, and I liked them much better than I did this first entry in the Fog Lake series. I almost didn't make it past the first chapter as I am pretty turned off by graphic descriptions of violence and don't really enjoy reading about the perverted and crazy ideas that go through a killer's mind. Other than those parts, I did enjoy the book. It was a good mystery that kept you guessing about who the killer was, and the main characters were well-written so you got an idea of them as real people, not just 2-dimensional characters. These books are described in some places as Christian fiction; I have to say there was very little in the book that had anything to do with Christianity or faith. There were a couple of mentions of prayer, and the romance was clean with no sex scenes or profanity, but the characters did not seem to look to God much or put their faith as a priority in their lives. So I would describe this more as a mystery with a clean romance element, not as a Christian mystery.
