Ansley Wilder has always lived life on the wild side, using thrills to numb the pain from her past and escape her mistakes. But a near-death experience two years ago changed everything. When another incident nearly claims her life, she turns her thrill-seeking ways into a fight for survival.
Ryan Philips left Fog Lake to chase adventure far from home. Now he’s returned as the new fire chief in town, but the slower paced life he seeks is nowhere to be found. Not only is a wildfire blazing out of control, but a malicious killer known as “The Woodsman” is enacting crimes that appear accidental. Plus, there seems to be a strange connection with these incidents and his best friend’s little sister, Ansley Wilder.
As a killer watches their every move and the forest fire threatens to destroy their scenic town, both Ryan and Ansley hover on the brink of danger. One wrong move could send them tumbling over the edge . . . permanently.
Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.
After a few years of making not-so-great decisions, Ansley Wilder has managed to turn her life around. And the return of Ryan Phillips, her brother’s best friend, provides a new chance at love. But a mysterious figure with a dangerous agenda once again brings trouble to Fog Lake.
Brink of Danger is another great mystery from the Fog Lake series! Towards the end, I had an inkling about who The Woodsman could be. But all the other possible suspects made me second guess myself.
It was also interesting that the villain was actually trying to help Ansley, albeit in a very twisted way.
Ansley and Ryan had an enjoyable dynamic. And I was extremely glad that Ansley didn’t fall for The Woodsman’s attempt at making Ryan look bad.
They did mentioned each other’s looks a bit too much for my taste. But, it wasn’t a huge deal, since they also expressed appreciation for each other’s personality traits.
Favorite Moments: 🔥 Maggie the dog 🔥 “a man willing to build me a staircase” 🔥 staying at the cabin 🔥 goodbye
Content Notes: chapters from the villain’s POV (showing their messed up thought process), one use of “sadistic,” mention of a tattoo, death of a parent (mentioned), near-death experiences, injuries (not overly graphic), mention of a woman having a child after “she’d had her tubes tied,” mention of a serial killer, a parent’s infidelity, parental abandonment, blood, a massacre was part of the town’s history, mention of a girl practically throwing herself at a man (nothing happened), mention of people believing an area is haunted, mention of a mental disorder, blood, death and dying, description of child abuse, some mild innuendo, dead animal, mention of a woman being a “man eater,” mention of a man being a “playboy” or a “player,” touching, noticing and awareness, Ansley and Ryan stay in a cabin together when they get stranded (nothing improper happens), kissing, mention of suicide, guns
3.5 stars "Heights had never gotten to her before. But, right now, with no lifeline . . . the adrenaline rush suddenly wasn't so exciting."
Ansley Wilder routinely lived life to the fullest, but having been kidnapped and terrorized by a serial killer had a way of settling a girl down, except that right now her life was literally dangling in mid-air over a gorge . . . a zip-line inauguration gone terribly awry, or had someone deliberately put Ansley on the "brink of danger"?
Ryan Phillips had been back in Fog Lake for for less than twenty-four hours, settling in to his new job as fire chief, when he was caught up in a daring rescue . . . Ansley Wilder . . his best friend's little sister, clinging for dear life to the side of a cliff. That girl certainly knew how to draw the attention, a drop-dead gorgeous (a bad pun in this situation) spitfire if he remembered correctly, and at the moment that stubborn determination was probably keeping her alive.
As Ansley and Ryan re-connect, people in Ansley's circle of acquaintances seem to be experiencing a myriad of deadly freak accidents. What exactly is going on in Fog Lake and who will be next? Can two people who have pasts filled with regrets find a way to soften their jagged edges?
" . . . . sometimes broken people could come together and be made whole. Was that a risk he was willing to take?"
Read this off and on in one day. Great mystery, likable and relatable characters. Barritt continues to surprise, even when I'm sure I have it all figured out. Looking forward to Jaxon's story.
I am really enjoying the Fog Lake series. This was a fun mystery. I liked Ansley and Ryan and thought they made a great couple. The answer to the mystery was a good one and held my attention. Looking forward to the next Fog Lake story!
Brink of Danger is book three in the Fog Lake Mysteries and my favorite one yet.
My anxiety was high pretty much from the first word. There were times when I could hardly catch my breath. But thank goodness there were some lighter moments here and there where I could take a breather. My favorite of those moments were Ansley and Ryan's teasing banter and sarcastic remarks. They were fun to get to know.
The Woodsman was such a creepy villain. We got to see things from their perspective a few times and wow! Chilling, to say the least. I had my suspicions about who the Woodsman was, though I kept talking myself out of it because there were plenty of other viable suspects. So I guess you could say that I had it figured out, but then I didn't have it figured out, lol.
With a gripping opening chapter and ever increasing suspense, Brink of Danger is an unputdownable must read for fans of romantic suspense.
Brink of Danger by Christy Barritt was a wonderful suspense novel. From the first chapter, Barritt takes readers through a mystery filled with plenty of surprises and twists. The idea of a ziplining mystery hasn't been done before, or at least, I haven't read one yet, so it was a completely different plot element. The romance flowed through the pages of the story, offering romance for those who need one. I did figure out the bad person before Barritt showed it. Even though I did, it didn't ruin the story for me. I kept reading to prove myself correct. Overall Brink of Danger is a wonderful suspense novel with plenty of what if moments and a quest for justice for the characters.
Fog Lake has to be one of the creepiest towns in the Great Smokies--especially if you are one of the four Wilder siblings. Ansley Wilder is a reformed wild child, one who still lived for the thrill of the moment. Now it seems someone wants to eliminate Ansley by using her "highs" to lure her to her death.
Ryan is an upright guy, the fire chief, whose job--for now--is getting Ansley out of trouble. IF he can. But as they work to find out who-dun-it, the attacks seem more vicious.
If you like creepy romantic suspense, grab one of the Fog LaKe series, such as BRINK OF DANGER. The books are all stand-alone.
With every book Christy Barritt's Fog Lake series gets better and better! Ansley's story is high octane from the very first page -- might be the most exciting opening chapter Barritt's ever written.
And Ansley's story is by far the most emotional story in the trilogy. That's saying something considering how weepy I was reading Boone's story!
“Time didn’t always heal all wounds, but time put those wounds into perspective.”
“He’d lived under guilt for so long that he’d nearly forgotten what it was like to live free.”
“Have you ever seen a rock with jagged edges? Put it in water and let the water move, and you know what happens? Those edges become smooth. It may not be a quick process, and it’s not without pain. But those rough parts can be smoothed into something beautiful.”
Well, I guess I’m in the minority of those who read this book. I’m hoping Christy Barritt, an author I thoroughly enjoy, has not jumped the shark with this one. I found the story less enjoyable than others and though I guessed the killer early, I didn’t even feel like it was logical and was way too far fetched. Parts were way too predictable and Barritt is really recycling too many parts from her other books. I guess there are only but so many times you can read about the beautiful people who kinda don’t like each other but inevitably fall in love, the references too his muscles and smell, another Barritt book where someone gets knocked out and tied up (this seems to happen every time!), the mom issues, etc. I would like for her to do something a little different. But to be honest, it might be that this series is just not one of my favorites by her. So might be my last Fog Lake book.
Welcome to Fog Lake - the perfect place for serial killers to operate!
This 3rd book in the Fog Lake Mysteries carries on the serial killer theme. This villain is "The Woodsman". There is a certain familiarity about the stories in the way they are written, in how the suspense builds, and how the thoughts of the killer are portrayed, and yet Christy Barritt has somehow managed to make each story unique - it doesn't feel like a retelling of the previous one.
This one is Ansley's story, and is my favourite of the series. Ansley, the former wild-child, now trying to live a new life struggles with her former ways of thinking and coping, including letting go of the bitterness towards her mother. Her struggles were real and honest and I liked that.
I did work out quite quickly who the killer was on this one - which makes a change, because the previous two I had a list with many suspects that I kept flitting between. #1 I did work out just before the reveal. #2 I didn't, but he was on my suspect list. So it was different to be fairly confident throughout who the killer was (okay, I did waver a couple of times, but soon ruled them out) although I was a little unsettled with the who until the why was revealed. I just had to hope my faith in the author was justified - and it was!
Looking forward to Jaxon's story!
Favourite Quotes:
Ansley's jaw tightened. "Regret or not - the damage she did is done. There's no changing that. If a mountain is blown apart, you can't put it back together." Ryan wanted to say more, but he knew he was treading on thin ice. He wanted to say that once a mountain was blown apart, you couldn't fix it - but you could build something new with the pieces.
Ansley quietly said, "Sometimes I have too many jagged edges." "Have you ever seen a rock with jagged edges? Put it in the water and let the water move, and you know what happens? Those edges become smooth. It may not be a quick process, and it's not without pain. But those rough parts can be smoothed into something beautiful."
I've been enjoying the Fog Lake Mysteries series and was excited to read about one of my favorite characters, Ansley, in this book. As always, Christy Barritt brings us back to the beautiful Fog Lake and to a cast of fun characters. I enjoyed getting to read more about Ansley and how events in past books have changed her character. She has definitely had a lot of development over the series and we get to see even more of that in this book.
Like all of Barritt's books, I read this in one sitting. The romance and suspense was balanced well for me, although this one felt a little more romance than suspense to me. I liked that this book had a bit more mention of God and prayer than the earlier books in the series. I would still love to see a faith plot line and a more present sense of God in Barritt's books, but this one had the most of those features than any of her other's that I've read.
The one thing I didn't enjoy about this book was that I figured out who the bad guy was fairly early on. It just felt fairly obvious and it seemed like a reach to me. Maybe that's why the book seemed more of a romance to me, because I didn't have to spend time guessing who the criminal was. It was a bit of a let down, and so I knocked the book down a star for that.
Overall I'd give this book a 3.5 star rating. Although not my favorite Barritt book, it's definitely a page turner and is worth the read. The book had a strong theme of redemption and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in that. If you enjoy romantic suspense you may enjoy this book!
Book three of this series moves to the only sister of the Wilder siblings. It opens with Ansley nearly losing her life in an “accident” later discovered to be sabotage. This sets off a series of near misses and worse, but she doesn’t seem to be the target after all. People close to her are.
Unfortunately, that keeps her in the eye of the storm.
Her brother Jaxon’s best friend Ryan, someone she’s had a crush on since she was young, has returned to town to take the job as fire chief. He has a dark secret in his past. And though his arrival coincides with the attacks in town, Ansley can’t believe he would do such a thing. She relies on her instincts, even though they’ve led her astray before. But she can’t deny her feelings for him. And he might just be receptive this time.
The romance in this one happens faster than in the prior two books, though that makes sense given they weren’t strangers. There are a ton of suspects this time, and while I guessed right away who was behind the crimes, it was still satisfying to watch events unfold. Ryan is a fire chief, not a detective, so the “police procedural” aspect wasn’t really in play. Still, he (along with her brother, the sheriff) works through the clues in a steady, methodical way.
The climax went as I expected, as did the epilogue—right down to what is probably supposed to be a surprise but was really the only possible option. None of that bothered me. I was content with the way the book progressed and ended.
All told, a good installment that has me rushing in to the next.
Christy Barriett is an incredible author to follow. Her books just get better and better with time. This mystery is no exception. Ainsley has made serious mistakes in the past, but has changed after being held hostage by a killer in a previous book. One of her brother's best friends returns to Fog Lake as the New Fire Chief. Then a series of horrible accidents as well as a murder happen to various people. Ainsley almost dies in a zipline accident. Ryan can't help but get involved. Besides all of that, there is a bad fire in a neighboring county. Someone even cuts Ryan's brake lining and an accident on the mountain could have easily resulted with 2 deaths, but God had other plans for both of them. When the fire reaches Fog Lake, things come to a head. You might want to visit Fog Lake for the whole story. It doesn't disappoint.
Brink of Danger by Christy Barritt is the latest installment in the Fog Lake series. From the beginning, this series has been one of my favorites by this author. And each book keeps getting better and better. This is Ansley's story. If you've read the other books in this series, you will know why Ansley has had a rough life. While I recommend reading this series in order (because why would you want to miss out on any of them?), this book can definitely be read as a standalone novel. The Woodsman was a really interesting villain, probably one of the most interesting villains I've encountered in Christian fiction. I highly recommend this book and the entire series. I think it would appeal to readers of Christian Fiction as well as readers of mainstream suspense. It is amazing! I received a digital copy of this book from the author with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
I didn’t think I would like this book when I started reading it because I really didn’t care for Ansley and her thrill-seeking, reckless ways; but the more you read the more you kind of understand why Ansley is like that.
The opening scene describing Ansley’s near-death experience was quite frightening! The author did a great job describing that without going overly descriptive. Although as someone who doesn’t like heights (because of fear of falling like that!) the scene maybe felt a little too real!
I did figure out who the killer was part-way through the book, and while the plot was just okay for me, it was still a fun read. I liked how we get to see Ansley grow and change throughout the book. So overall not my favorite Christy Barritt book, but still a great read!
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, this third installment in the Fog Lake Mysteries kept me guessing all the way through! Each book centers on one of the Wilder siblings, and this time it was time to learn more about Ansley. She has been a wild child and carries alot of fears and baggage, but just as she has finally begun to straighten out her life, she almost loses it. Enter Ryan back to Fog Lake, a good friend of her brothers, and a crush from her teenage years. Ryan brings along a lot of his own baggage, but right now his priority is to keep Ansley safe and to discover who is behind all the horrible things happening in Fog Lake. It was nice also to catch up with Boone and Luke, Ansley's brothers, from previous Fog Lake Mysteries.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are my own.
Adrenaline Junky. Thrill Seeker. Nah, I wouldn’t call myself those, but I do love to experience new things. Yep, I have been scuba diving, hot air ballooning, swimming with the stingrays, and even skydiving, to name a few. All of them require a measure of trust. So I can well imagine what it would be like to be on a zip line high above a gorge and hear the cables snap! That’s just the beginning of the book! Someone well known in town is hiding a very dark side. People are getting hurt; some are dying. Ansley seems to be at the center. And then, what about the new fire chief? Everything started about the time he got to town. You won’t want to put down this action packed thriller. Get it!
From the first page, Ansley Wilder was in danger. A zipline accident nearly killed her. There were many suspects. One died himself. Another disappeared, making him seem guilty. Mysterious clues appeared. Meanwhile, the new Fire Chief, Ryan Philips, is renewing his acquaintance with Ansley. He was in school with her and her brothers, one of whom, Luke, is now Sheriff. Will it become a romance? At the same time, a Watchman comes into the picture. This person is determined to "protect" Ansley from anyone who has ever harmed her. However, the Watchman's reasoning is very flawed. Read this to see all the danger thenWatchman causes. This is a fast-paced book and it keeps you glued to the page. I was surprised when the killer was identified. See if you can figure it out!
Mysteries, fires, and hidden secrets - that's what suspense books are made of!! This newest installment of the Fog Lake series has all of these and more! This story focuses on Ansley Wilder, who has lived a "wild life" but has tried to clean up her life after a near death experience. When it seems that someone is targeting her, firefighter Ryan Phillips steps in to help keep her safe but Ryan has his own secrets as well. With a raging fire coming closer to the town of Fog Lake, can they find out what is going on before "The Woodsman" strikes again!! This can be read as a stand alone but you will want to read all the books in this series that focuses on the Wilder family!
Christy Barritt has done it again. I loved the depth of this book. The main character of this book, Ansley, intrigued me when she was introduced in the first book of the series. In this novel, which could stand alone (but don’t miss the others), Ansley’s identity is broadened and explored naturally as the plot develops. She’s very real; I know women like her, and now I understand them better. This is part of Christy Barritt’s gift. The suspense was well done and this was a great read. I’m sorry it’s over.
Each edition of the Fog Lake Mysteries makes me want to read more.
In what should be an idyllic Smoky Mountain town, evil lurks just beneath the surface. In this round, wildfire, serial murders and creepy calling cards frighten residents and tourists alike. It seems that Ansley is a peripheral target. Her brothers and new firefighter Ryan attempt to keep her safe and work to solve the crimes before it's too late.
I received a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.
This series gets better with every book! Action pack from the opening pages that includes a zip line. Ansely and Ryan were fantastic! Loved their ability to go from flirty teasing to touching moments where they shared their hearts. And once again, Barritt kept me guessing who the villain truly was.
I'm excited that the next book will feature the last sibling in the Wilder family, Jaxon!
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The suspense was good, though the character of the woodsman was slightly predictable. I enjoyed Ansleys story and having her find her love. The introduction of a new character and addressing wrongs from their history made for a well developed and intricate story. This is an interesting community that visually sounds beautiful. This is the bird book of the series and while I would recommend reading them in order for the full enjoyment and I pledge of characters, this could be read as a stand-alone as well.
Brink of Danger moves quickly, has plenty of twists, intense situations, emotion, and kept me glued to my seat. Ansley and Ryan are a captivating couple, and I thoroughly enjoyed this thrill ride as they navigated their feelings for each other while also trying to determine who was targeting people around them. I’m enjoying this entire series! So far, each book can be read as a stand alone, but it’s fun reading them in order, getting all the background, and watching the various relationships grow.
Oh wow! what an exciting book! The opening pages describing Ansley ' s certain death got my heart pounding and it kept building until the end. I was 99% confident I knew the who for the killer but there are so many others thrown in that seem to make sense. This is an excellent story with Christy Barritt ' s style and a beautiful, hopeful romance in the midst of terror in atmospheric Fog Lake.
Brink of Danger brings Ansley Wilder back to her senses just as Ryan Phillips, her teen crush, comes back to town. However, just as sparks begin to fly between them, mysterious accidents begin to happen to people around Ansley. Another good mystery by Christy Barritt. I have one beef: the names she chose for characters were atrocious. "Thickie"? "Roadkill Ronnie"? Give me a break. Writers, p,ease use sensible names!
I thought this was very exciting and well-written! It’s one of the few books where I didn’t figure out who did it! It kept me guessing to the very end. I appreciate that it was clean, no vulgar words, great plot and realistic characters. I was very familiar with the setting of this book as we vacation in the area quite frequently. This is the second Fog Lake series book and I hope to read more.
Of the Fog Lake Mysteries, the story about Ansley has been my favorite so far, although they have all been great reads. So enjoyed her character arc from a thrill-seeking party girl to someone able to be vulnerable. The author kept me guessing who was behind all the things going wrong. If you're looking for a fun read, Brink of Danger is a super go-to. Looking forward to the 4th book in this series--Jaxon's story is sure to have me on the edge of my seat.
Such a great romantic suspense! It had the perfect mix of everything for this genre. I absolutely loved it. It was less intense than the other two, but that was absolutely fine with me. I enjoyed the love story, the redemption parts and the heart of forgiveness. It was just a well rounded book that was a great romantic suspense.
This is a really good book The author did a really good job with this one. The identity of the killer was a huge surprise to me. I really enjoy it when I can't figure out "who done it". I know most people pride themselves on figuring it out. But I like to surprised.
