All Maggie Acker ever wanted was to have a family of her own. Now, with a handsome, hardworking husband, Josh, and two adorable twin boys from his previous marriage, she is determined to be the wife and mother that Josh’s ex-wife failed to be.

But when one of the twins has a near fatal health scare and is later diagnosed with diabetes, Maggie blames herself for not seeing the signs sooner. As the rest of the family slowly learns to live with the diagnosis, Maggie fights to gain control of her son’s health. Coupled with a major career change for Josh, their marriage teeters on the brink of destruction.

When Maggie’s family sends the couple away for a much-needed vacation, a life-rocking argument is followed by terrifying news regarding their son. Will Maggie’s childhood dreams of love and family disappear before she realizes what was right in front of her?

A nice blend of Bed and Breakfast charming with real life struggles.

Oldest sibling Maggie is finding the shine has worn off her marriage. When she and Josh discover twin Isaac from Josh's prior marriage has Type I Diabetes, Maggie goes into "I've got this mode". There's not space for anyone else as she seeks to right her worlds wrongs. Unfortunately, she only succeeds in wearing herself out and further deteriorating her marriage.

I learned so much about Type I Diabetes in the pages and feel much empathy for those impacted.

I loved minor character Eric and look forward to seeing if a romance blossoms for crusty Aunt Pris.

My gratitude to the author for a complimentary e-copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

One of the reasons I love reading and telling stories is because of the precious gift they often leave us—the gift of empathy. Before writing Where Hope Begins, I understood very little about type one diabetes. In interviewing mothers and caregivers of children with type one, I began to glimpse the all-encompassing task of handling this disease. My respect for the children and parents who live with type one day-in and day-out has grown a hundredfold. If that was the only blessing that came from this book, (which it definitely wasn’t!) it would have been worth it to write.

I hope you enjoy Maggie and Josh's story! This marriage has a lot of kinks in it (like many of ours do!) and it's my sincere hope that their story will encourage you in some way. Blessings to you, dear readers!

Started this with great intentions... But unfortunately reading about a marriage in crisis is just not interesting to me at this time. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I know it's not the writing. I'm willing to come back to it later but for right now, I'm just going to let it be.

I am loving this women's fiction series from Heidi Chiavaroli. I adore series that center around the same family, but they normally don't have a women's fiction feel like this one does. Chiavaroli touches on some more serious things, but infuses the story with hope as the title suggests.

I appreciate that the main characters are married. That's definitely not the norm in the genre, and it shows that the story doesn't end with wedding vows - there are still twists, turns, and unknowns ahead. Maggie is finding her footing as an instant mother to twins after marrying a widower, Josh. Josh has some excess baggage from his prior marriage, which ended through no fault of his own. The consequences are still his to deal with however, and after the honeymoon phase is over, this sets them up for some rocky patches indeed. On top of that, one of the young twins has type I diabetes, and Maggie feels the pressure of doing everything perfectly right in order to keep him healthy and alive. The author does a great job in showing what life as a caregiver of a child with diabetes would be like, and I have the utmost empathy for those with this disease and those in the caregiving role.

I really appreciated the realism in this story, and how it's never cheesy or sugary sweet. The family feels genuine, and provide some wonderful secondary characters. They don't always get along but have each other's best interests at heart, and it's fun to read about the different personalities and how they still manage to work together.

I do recommend reading the series in order because I think that it's more enjoyable that way. I'm so glad that book three, Where Love Grows, is coming in October, and the wait isn't too long!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel; a positive review was not required, and this review is my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed this new installment in The Orchard House Bed and Breakfast series! I would highly recommend readers reading this series in order to fully understand the story and to avoid spoilers. Maggie was one of my favorite characters in the first book, so I was excited to read her story. I really enjoyed reading about her and Josh and their boys. I liked how they had to overcome a real struggle that many face. I can't wait to see what is in store for them in the rest of this series!

This was a great 2nd installment in the Orchard House Bed and Breakfast series. This story would definitely stand alone, but if you plan to read all of the books, I would recommend reading them in order as there are some spoilers for book 1 included in this book. Though I'm generally not a huge fan of contemporary romance unless there's something else driving it, this one was different as the main relationship in the story was a marriage relationship. I LOVED that about this book. It addressed all the feelings one has in married life - about frustrations and feelings of failure and being too much and also not enough. This book followed the oldest Martin child, Maggie. If you've read the first book, you know that this series is a contemporary re-telling of Little Women (though I haven't read Little Women and still have been thoroughly enjoying this series). The first book followed Josie Martin (patterned after Jo March) and this one follows Maggie (Martin) Acker (patterned after Meg March). Maggie is married to a widower who has twin sons from a prior marriage. When a scary diagnosis comes to one of the boys, it threatens to totally overwhelm their fraying marriage.

I LOVED that this story dealt with the trials of marriage. Both Maggie and Josh are good people who love each other and the boys and want more than anything for things to work out, but expectations and fears trip them up. It was so true to real life, I found myself tearing up at unlikely places and cheering them on along the way. I loved the unexpected surprise towards the end that really drew them together as well. The faith thread in this one was absolutely solid as major themes of forgiveness, reliance upon God and surrendering to Him were prominent throughout. However, it was not at all preachy about those things. I enjoyed the plot-line as well as the relational dynamics. Though this was primarily a character-driven narrative, there was enough of a story to keep this plot-driven preferer happy. I enjoyed seeing the Martin family back for this second installment and look forward to future books in this series! I would definitely recommend this one to fans of any contemporary novel!

Special thanks to the author for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

There was so much to love about Josh and Maggie's story. I came to love the Martin family by the end of the first book and am now looking forward to reading each family member's story. This one did not disappoint.
What sweet little boys, Davy and Isaac! I was familiar with diabetes type 2 from various family members, but not type 1. I have a greater sense of empathy for those dealing with this disease after reading Isaac's story. My favorite part of the story may be when Isaac had just had enough and was crying that he hated diabetes, and Maggie just laid on the floor beside him and cried with him. Such a beautiful picture!
Another one of my favorite parts was when Maggie was trying to teach a Bible study and was so convicted by the lesson that she couldn't finish. Lizzie's encouragement was perfect. And the whole scene was so real, vulnerable, and sweet.
Watching the characters deal with hard things-Davy and the bully, Maggie and her insecurities, Josh and his bitterness, Isaac and his diabetes- was so beautiful and convicting at times. It was really refreshing reading a story that wasn't about two people falling in love but a couple dealing with real issues.
One last favorite from the book was the Thanksgiving scene where they went around the table and instead of saying something that they were thankful for, they said why they were thankful for someone at the table. It was such a sweet twist on the age-old tradition.
Heidi Chiavaroli does an amazing job of paying tribute to Little Women and Louisa May Alcott while keeping the characters fresh and interesting.
The only things I did not like were some personal preferences of language usage that I do not like to read especially in something that is Christian fiction.

real life type 1 diabetes stuff

This contemporary Christian fiction novel is full of real life drama. Most of it centering around marriage, blended family, and dealing with the struggles of having a child with type 1 diabetes.
I had to read this one in sections because there were a lot of emotional things happening as I read it, some were hard, because if you’ve lived life you’ve experienced people around you who have been drug addicts, or had marriage problems. And more recently I have a young nephew who was diagnosed with type 1, so the stress Maggie faces is very real. I felt like it was depicted very accurately. So much so I had to read over time because I couldn’t always handle it based on things going on in my own life. Haha.

A Story of Hope

“Where Hope Begins” is a continuation of the Orchard House Bed and Breakfast and brings two families together into one. There are adorable six year old twin boys, who I wanted to adopt! The family is not without trials and problems, past and present, especially as they face life with one of the twins who has Type 1 diabetes. They prove that with God’s help, all things are possible. As they search their hearts, the main characters experience in-depth growth, and their growth will cause the reader to take a long look at their own life. I can’t recommend this book highly enough!

How Did This Happen?

Really! How?

I’m a big historical fiction fan. My first Chiavaroli book was The Tea Chest. I was in love. So I read some more. Now, as I was finishing Where Hope Begins, I stopped and asked the above question. This series isn’t historical fiction! How’d I get here? Why am I devouring this series? (I have to wait till October for book three???) Lo and behold, I find that I have morphed into a Chiavaroli fan! She handles difficult situations with such insight and compassion! I feel I know this family. Brava, Ms. Chiavaroli! Another excellent book!

With a child diagnosed with a life-long medical condition, the adjustment and stress that Maggie and Josh go through was very understandable. While both of them, at different times, were very hard on themselves, they did learn to rely more on God by the end. Their love deepened and ended happy with lots of hope for the future. The inspirational message was very good and I enjoyed visiting with Maggie’s family again.

The sisters are named after the sisters in "Little Women" in this story. The main character is Maggie and she is married to Josh Acker who is a school teacher.

Josh's first wife died tragically and he is having a hard time forgetting all the problems that he had in that marriage. The one very good thing about that marriage is twin boys were born.

Maggie, the oldest child in her family, takes on a lot of responsibilities. She wants to be a "Super Mom" to her new family. She is doing a really good job until one of the boys becomes a diabetic. This causes all kinds of stress for Maggie and Josh.

Josh is trying to win Maggie's love by doing so much. He is still thinking that he is married to his first wife and that wife only wanted the best. Maggie is not a demanding wife.

I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to take care of a child that has Diabetes. And his twin brother is also feeling the stress. One of the boys in the twins' class in school is very hateful which makes for a very difficult situation for this family.

Josh and Maggie get the family to help them and they can go away for a few days. On the way, they are in a snowstorm and see a man on the side of the road thumbing a ride. Maggie wants Josh to stop and help the man. Josh thinks it is not wise to pick up a stranger. Josh and Maggie have a huge fight and Maggie wants Josh to turn around and go home.

Josh decides to go back and pick up Eric. At first, they thought Eric was dead because he was lying on the side of the road. They take Eric to the hospital and he gets a checkup and to their surprise, find out that Eric is very healthy.

Picking up Eric is the turning point in this couple's lives. They realize the mistakes they have made in their marriage and decide to ask God to help them. Eric is a really interesting person and I hope the author will write his story.

You will be educated in the life of a family that deals with a chronic disease.

Where Hope Begins Review
Where Hope Begins, by Heidi Chiavaroli, is the second book in The Orchard House Bed and Breakfast Series. With whispers of Little Women adding to the charm of this story, this novel is engaging and thoughtful. As a contemporary romance, this book offers a touching story of faith and family that is genuinely moving and memorable.

The plot of this novel is stirring and wholly thought-provoking as it explores marriage, motivations, insecurities, parenting, and even chronic illness. As the story develops, the characters face very real challenges that are real, raw, and relatable. The story is compelling as the characters themselves begin to evaluate their goals, reflect on their dreams, and open their hearts to new possibilities and priorities. Page after page, the relevant themes of forgiveness, trust, honesty, and hope are incorporated with sincerity and vulnerable authenticity. From beginning to end, this book features the perfect blend of drama, romance, and faith, making the story truly interesting and uplifting.

Where Hope Begins is a novel that inspires even as it entertains. Its story has much that readers desire: tears, kisses, second-chances, romance, family, and faith. With an intriguing plot, appealing characters, and important themes, this novel is well-written and enjoyable. I gladly recommend it, and I eagerly look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Where Hope Begins by Heidi Chiavaroli is the second book in the Orchard House Bed and Breakfast Series. The series is a modern retelling of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. This story focuses on Maggie (Meg) and how she struggles in her new marriage to Josh after finding out one of his twin boys has diabetes.
I loved the fact the couple in this book was already married. It showed that romance is still important after vows are spoken and also showed how that golden happily ever after is something you have to fight for together.
Maggie represents so many moms out there who are striving to be that "perfect mom" and are determined to do it all on their own. I identified with her struggle so many times, and I enjoyed watching her grow spiritually through her journey.
The author is a master at addressing difficult issues like having a child with diabetes or dealing with a spouse that has an addiction. Josh lived through horrible circumstances in his previous marriage that continued to haunt him after he married Maggie. His emotions through everything were eye opening and deepened my empathy for those in a similar situation.
Overall, I loved this story. I loved the beauty of the romance within marriage, the heart-wrenching struggles, and the work it requires to stay together through all the hard things.
Fans of contemporary Christian fiction will enjoy this story.
I was given a copy of this book by the author with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Where Hope Begins is such a heartwarming story filled with family, prayer, some cute little guys, and lots of hope (hence the title of course). Chiavaroli brings the story of Maggie, who seems like a woman after my own heart. She loves her step-sons as if they are her own, and I could see myself acting that very same way. When one of them becomes sick with diabetes, she is like in full-on mama bear mode. Again, I could see myself doing that too. Her commitment to those boys pulled on my heartstrings more than once as I read the pages of this beautifully written story.

The thing I appreciate most in this book is the attention to detail that Chiavaroli gives to diabetes and how it can affect people, especially young people. And the fact that she chose Type 1 was great because in my opinion it is the lesser understood of the two. I love it when books can educate us!!! And then add in a married couple that isn't in trouble, so to speak, but could definitely use some help in the communication and reconnecting department. I could easily connect with that aspect of marriage!

Overall Where Hope Begins is a touching story with lots of love, emotion (have some tissues nearby), and family. And while I don't want this series to end, I cannot wait for the next installment! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The lack of communication between the main characters was hard to read at times. But I liked the hint of Meg's story from Little Women being woven into this one. The dealing with a diagnosis and frustration with doctors felt very real.

Maggie and Josh begin a new life together following the devastating loss of his first wife who had loads of issues of her own. They are definitely struggling with a blended family, a life altering diagnosis, and some poorly made decisions. I have found that the author has a unique outlook that brings their struggles into a proper focus, even though the route to get where they need to be is not always the easiest path. Although typically a historical author, I really appreciate her skills with this contemporary series which was inspired by her historical title, The Orchard House (which I do recommend).
This is part of The Orchard House Bed and Breakfast series that is a contemporary twist on Little Women, which I really enjoyed even though I’m not a classics reader and haven’t read Little Women. You could read this as a free-standing novel, but I think it is best enjoyed as a series that has returning characters. It’s a great cast and it’s lots of fun catching up with their life changes and new relationships.
I have read and thoroughly enjoyed all of Heidi Chiavaroli’s traditionally published novels and am slowly making my way through this indie series. She is a two-time Carol Award winning author.
Trigger Warnings: Juvenile (Type 1) Diabetes, marital issues, fatal car accident

This was a real eye opener about how a family deals with juvenile diabetes. Just the constant worry of if the sugar levels are too high or too low is tremendous stress on the parents. The mom was getting up every two hours a night to check blood sugar levels so they would stay stable. She wasn't getting a good night rest doing that which only made the days more stressful. Marriage is hard work. Once the thrill of a new partner wears off and trials start happening, both people have to work together to make the marriage good. This story definitely showed how both parents were trying to do everything in their power to build the relationship, but only by discovering they were both caught up in their own individual plan as to what they thought should be the answer that then they weren't working together. An unexpected traveler on the roadside helped them readjust their thinking. Lots to think about while reading this book but I enjoyed it. I definitely have more compassion for parents who have children who are sick.

🛁 Clean Romance

Heidi Chiavaroli’s book follows the journey of a young couple, Josh and Maggie, struggling through challenges in their young marriage.

Josh is a widower with young twin boys. He’s also a high school teacher wondering about whether he made the best career choice now that he has a young family and second wife. He’s also older than Maggie and was one of her teachers her senior year. Although no inappropriate relationship developed at the time, they were still aware of one another.

Maggie’s parents have always been hospitable, so helping her mother run a family inn isn’t outside of her comfort zone.

Josh and Maggie have to learn to let go of the past, communicate better, and share in decision-making and the care of one of the twins after a traumatic diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.

Their struggles mirror real life, so if you’re looking for an escape, this isn’t likely to be your book. However, if you’re needing to feel seen or heard, you will likely find comfort at the end of this journey.

The deep heart of this story is revealed page after page as the characters learn what it is to truly love one another through it all. With distrust, personal inadequacies, lots of previous hurt, questions, medical emergencies, and more, Maggie and Josh have a lot to wade through. And truly, it is more like quick sand than wading through water. Each moment threatens to pull them apart and push them under. Moment by moment, though, they reach out to each other and those around them to heal, gain trust, and find their way into a life of love and family.
I found myself wiping gentle tears, smiling with hope, joyful, and so many other emotions as I read through this story. It was beautifully done and I can't believe I waited this long after reading book 1 to tackle this one. I enjoyed book 1 but this one was truly a more lovely story. A definite recommend.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first in the series, but elements of it were engaging. I listened on audio and wasn't a huge fan of the narrator, so that could've been part of my struggle, but I tried to rate the book on the story alone.

For me, the two main characters were hard to like. There were several instances between them when I just had to groan and say, "Come on, be grown ups." LOL

Aside from the few nit-picky frustrations with the characters, I do appreciate the author tackling the topic of how hard it is on parents to deal with a child's chronic, lifelong illness. The story brings great awareness to a subject I haven't personally dealt with but gave me compassion for those who do.

I plan to continue with this series and read the next book, because I adore nearly everything else I've read by this author.

The second in The Orchard House Bed & Breakfast series, Where Hope Begins explores the story of Maggie, the oldest girl of the Martin family. Maggie wants to be a wife and mother more than anything, and seems to have her prayers answered when she marries Josh, a widower with small twin boys Isaac and Davey. Early in the story, Isaac is diagnosed with Type I diabetes, and the story centers around the family dealing with his diagnosis and how to help him while still finding time for themselves. Thankfully, I've not dealt with a illness like this in either of my children, so to read how all-consuming this disease is was just heart-breaking but very real. A story of faith, hope, and never giving up - a quick, upbeat read that you will enjoy.

Not quite as compelling as the first book but every bit as good. I love this family. I love the way they are working out their faith daily. As a romance reader I loved the focus on life after the wedding. We rarely see stories focused on what happens when life happens to a couple. This story about a newly married couple dealing with a life threatening disease in their 6 year old just broke my heart. I’m loving this series. Again, I listened to the AI audiobook on double speed. It’s not as good as a person but it’s not terrible, especially when it lets me read a book in an afternoon while doing chores for $2.

This story was kind of disturbing in its telling. Both Maggie and her husband , Josh, tried to be the best in self-sacrificing in their marriage. Josh in providing Maggie and their boys with building them a brand new house; and Maggie in being the only one who could take care of Isaac, one of the twins, with his diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. They had to realize that a marriage is made of compromises and couples have to work together with their families. No one person in a marriage can make it all alone.

good read….tough read

This was a story that showed some of the hard realities of marriage, of tough situations and how it can take a toll on the marriage and the partners dealing with it. Living with a child with special needs can tear you apart and bring you back together, with God’s help. There was pain and joy in this book. A challenging read for me, but one I could identify with and appreciate.

I resonated a lot with the characters and all their struggles. This book was real and emotional and even the cheesy parts were relatable and enjoyable! Onto the next in the series, though this one so far is my favorite.

This is a rather intense emotional read that focuses on a loved twin bonus child who becomes insulin dependent. The routine & responsibility thrown on the main character causes her to stress out. Not because type 1 diabetes is too much trouble. Instead she is paralyzed with fear that she will harm the sweet child.
