“26 Words” is a collection of short stories which takes a look at few of the serious social issues we face as a society. As a race, we still have a lot to learn and a long way to go, to make our society perfect.

The only way to achieve this will be by bringing the change ourselves. These tales of fiction are just a look at some of the social problems that are entwined in our lives today. The stories deal with issues such as sexual abuse, sexual harassment, female infanticide, dowry, domestic violence and the evils of a patriarchal society.
This book is hard-hitting and the type, which makes you think, what is wrong with our society.

There are 26 short stories for 26 letters, and if I had to choose one, then it is truly hard for me to narrow it down to a single one. Each story has a lesson, which is really eye opening if you read with an open mind that is.

However, if I had to pick one, then I’m gonna go with S for Saree, the story of a Survivor, one of the best stories I read.

An idiotic enraged youth threw acid on a girls face simply because she refused to marry him, it really pained my soul. In a country like ours, this really has become such a common phenomenon nowadays, and the culprits often go free. Really a sad plight to witness. But our protagonist, in the end, said- she’s not a victim actually, she is a Survivor.

Overall, 5 stars from me. Loved the book and looking forward to reading more stories from the author. Well done :)

This book contain 26 short stories . The name 26 words justifies this book .
26 short stories are related with 26 alphabets . Every story title start with Alphabetical order

Every title of each story in this book justifies the story within. The narration is simple and interesting . Especially most of the stories have a climax twist . I really loved the way the author have narrated.

26 stories are related to issues faced by women. I am really grateful to the author for writing these sensitive issues faced by women (which shouldn't be sensitive at all if you haven't opened our eyes by writing this ).

I like all stories but my favourite stories are

1.B for bangles - A tale of a bride
Which tells the story of Vikram and Bharkha . This story talks about dowry system.

2.H is for Hair; a story of Sexual Harassment at Workplace
This story deals with Harshitha and her boss who harrases her. The climax of this story is interesting when she reacts .

3.M for Mirror; Maternity leave and the mother
This story tells about how a career of women is affected after maternity.

4. U for Uniform; a story on Unequal pay
This story tells about Urvashi and Aditya who are life partners and how urvashi is faced by discrimination at work in the way of denying promotion .
The climax if this story makes you proud.

The language is simple and it makes the book a easy page turner . Really i love this book and recommend this to others.

First I was caught by the title and then by the introduction part...which said " Each story is based on a word that starts with a
letter of the alphabet and a compelling issue which begins with the same letter. "
Central charcters of each story also has name starting with corresponding alphabet.
All stories are easily relatable in the present scenario,as they deal with gender discrimination, foeticide, domestic violence, queer, survival, child labor, maternity and the like. My favourites in the collection are "B for Bangles:tale of a Bride", Q for Queen: a Queer story"and U for uniform: a story about unequal pay"

I loved how each story has been developed and each character of each story given a complete outlook. It gives a food for thought after each story and forces us to think over, especially stories based on education, maternity and child labor. The book has drama, emotions, reality, fantasy and a lot of strong messages. It is a short read also. So anyone who need a different exercise to mind and thoughts can definitely go for the book.

Book –26 Words
Author- Smita Pal
Type- Women Empowerment (fiction and motivational)
Format- E Book ( PDF)
Rating-5/5

26 Words by Smita Pal is a fiction book with a collection of 26 small stories captured on 26 alphabets of English. The idea behind it seems that there is no area untouched and unspoken without women in this world.

All the stories in this book relate to women empowerment, challenges faced by women in the society, struggles of girls and women’s accomplishments in the backdrop of various malpractices prevailing in the contemporary times.

The book has been able to cover a wide range of issues covering various themes such as domestic violence, dowry, independence of girl child, motherhood, education, gender discrimination and equality. This way book has covered both modern as well as traditional challenges which a girl is destined to face in her life.

There are many story based takeaways in this book but in simple wordings, the foremost takeaway of the book is that if you are a girl, no obstacle can preclude you from forwarding ahead on your own path. Each of the story in the book is talking, putting a strong idea in front of the reader, compelling him/her to contemplate once again about the happenings in this society. If we deliberate about that gently in a bigger scenarios, we are obliged to get several insights into women empowerment in this patriarchal society.

Other things I liked in this book are:-

1. Book cover seems like a strong women getting ahead on her path despite multiple obstacles.
2. Language of the book is easy and comfortable. Narration style is remarkable.
3. Coverage of the stories were comprehensive on number of issues and situations.
4. Characterization was really well, strong and confident.
5. Title of book as well as of each story is apposite.

On a concluding note, Overall a brilliant work by the author in the form of this awesome book. I really loved this book and recommend for all the book lovers.

Book Name: 26 words

Author: Smita Pal

Page: 135

Format: Pdf

Summary: 26 Words is a collection of 26 short stories. As we know English alphabet system has 26 letters. Each one of the story starts with one of the letters and deals with a social issue. The author has written about very relevant problems like child abuse, domestic violence, gender discrimination, dowry system, sexual abuse and what not.

My Take: First of all I want to congratulate the author for choosing to write about these issues which are prevailing in our society from a long time. The concept of mixing the alphabets with the stories is really interesting. When I picked the book, I had absolutely no idea about the blurb. As I kept on reading, I found myself more and more engrossed into it.

The cover is very simple and innovative. One look at the cover and you can come out with thousands of interpretations. The title could not be more relevant. The writing style is engaging. The narration was beautiful. Each story brings a new flavour and forces you to rethink about your notion.

As I have mentioned earlier also, the book deals with social issues. The stories were very bold. The characters were also very much believable. The author has tried to convey her thoughts with simple language and she has been successful in doing so. I remember there is a story about how judgemental we become about others without really knowing much. It was such an eye opener for me. Then there is a story about child sexual abuse. I loved the ending of that. I can keep on going but I think you should read and give your opinion.

I can’t help myself but giving this book a five star. This is a five star read for me after a long time. I can’t be happier if you guys give it a try and then we discuss about the stories. This book needs to be read. I strongly recommend this one to everybody.

Have you ever thought through the use of 26 letters of English alphabet you can cover sensitive topics in one book? 26 Words by Author Smita Pal have 26 words that justify this book. 26 short stories are related with 26 alphabets.
Every story title starts with Alphabetical order. I am fairly new to this short story and poem genre. This book and its creativity and the content really mesmerized me. Her 26 words are actually 26 stories but these 26 stories show an insightful author who observes the society silently and writes all the problems she has witnessed and wants to bring the problems of the society in front of the readers to make them aware.
There are many issues that are talked about in the book, some of them are social issues that we see in today's world, like every single day. Be it people being abused, in the form of harassment in the workplace or unequal pay based on gender it covers it all.
I loved how the author has put forward her point of view and bought up contemporary issues that are really hard to talk about.
I strongly urge everyone to read this book cause this book has so much which can completely change our mindset. The author addresses the issues starting from access to education, child abuse, domestic violence, child labor, maternity and extramarital affairs.

The stories are so relatable to the current Indian problems. We can also relate those stories to Indian women. We can also involve ourselves in the story unknowingly while going through each and every story.

There are numerous stories hidden in one twig or the other. ’26 Words' by Smita Pal is a compilation of 26 stories each connected to the letters of the alphabet. These short stories carry tales of an abusive relationship, unwanted pregnancies, female foeticide, narcotics, and many more; all strung together by the 26 letters.

I can't stop thinking about the stories. They have left me spellbound. All of them are unique in their connection and the way they have been developed. I have never read stories so unique. Not only did they have a good idea behind them, but all the plotlines were also perfect. I didn't feel bored at any part of the book. It is a true page-turner. The tales show me life so different, so beautiful and inspiring to the core. The best thing was that the stories didn't have helpless endings, they concluded with lessons and determination. This book is an example of feminine courage and the beautiful bond that is shared among humans.

My favourites were 'J for Jar' and 'Q for Queen'. This book is not just women-centric. They are varied and can be enjoyed by all. I so wished this book would never end, if only there were more letters in the English alphabet.

Overall, an amazing collection to be read and relished by all. The writing style was simple and heart-touching. The slight lags here and there can be ignored on the set of amazing heartfelt tales.

Have you ever thought through the use of 26 letters of English alphabet you can cover sensitive topics in one book. Nope, I guess but after reading this book you will change your thought. 26 short stories that shows a lot of things that is happening near us, and we just move away from them.

Starting from letters A to Z one story based on each one story is shown. The stories are based on education, Violence, Inequality and many more. First the word starting from each letter is said after that a topic is covered with a suitable title. The characters involved in each story are given short introduction how the story would be further. Introducing the character's step by step the story involved are explained in detail.

It takes very less time to finish the book. Each story has maximum 4 to 5 pages which is beautiful explained in detail. I like one thing very much about all story that picture is provided at the start of the story and the end are perfect. Some stories are very exceptional. I like the story of Bangles starting letter B, Dog story of domestic violence starting from letter D and many more.

The plot of the book is very amazing. Writing style is good which explains in detail every story involved in the book. Cover of the book is just perfect.

Few authors have the coruage to address the reality as it is in their works. This actually is the true purpose of literature but following it requires courage and bravery. Smita Pal in her "26 Words" does this. Her 26 words are actually 26 stories but these 26 stories show an insightful author who observes the society silently and writes all the problems she has witnessed and wants to bring the problems of the society infront of the readers to make them aware. Her short stories are short but the issues she covers are very serious and thought-provoking.
Her art as a writer is at its horizon as she writes not only from the perspective of a woman but also men. This trait can not be overlooked. She writes not just about social problems but also the psychological aspects of people. This gives depth to her characters and they appear to be people speaking up for themselves. Therefore the book becomes an important read who want to understand the different sides of the society. For the grown up group of people, there may be stories relatable for them. These are stories of common people who anyone can meet in the street. However, younger people may not find the book much appealing due to its exploration of darker aspects of life.

A minimalist and attractive cover which is a shows an artistic combo and multidimensional portrait of freedom in showing the image of a bird being released to the sky where it belongs and a women walking through her designated path . The tile of the book "26 Words" is simple and apt as its gets to any book as each story starts with the English alphabet.

The book contains as collaboration of 26 short stories which demonstrates the more social issues which coerce within the country India. Each of the 26 stories starts with the alphabets in English symbolises a specific moral and social issue. One specific thing I liked from the author Smita Pal's work is that each of the 26 stories has life in it one can visually experience what the characters are trying to imply and mean with their actions and word and their feelings is been pictorused well.

All the stories within the book relate to things something which we all are aware is happening bad but it does take a lot of guts to speak about it and to a certain extend stand against the ill treatment done. All the stories have a meaning to it and has resistances to social changes in India. The protagonist in each of the story is depicts a sadden truth about the society which we are currently living in.

I have read many short story collective books but this one is unique.
I've never seen the use of 26 alphabets this good.
The author has used each letter as the starting letter of the title for each story.

I loved the concept of the author because they have put in all the effort to bring out the sensitive topics of society, some of which are considered taboo to talk about.
She has written her point of view in each which helps the reader understand each problems and help change their mindset.

Sensitive topics have been talked about in this book like child abuse, harassment, slavery, human trafficking and many more.

The writing style used is very interesting and language is lucid.

Each topic has been sown into a beautiful story with a good and well-written plot and ending.

I loved how the author put forward those topics and talked about them in detail because, in a society like this, it is important to talk about things like gender equality, unequal pay, and harassment.
She has written all those she could observe in society and even witnessed herself.

The stories look like based on real-life experiences and are relatable to this Indian society.

I would recommend this book to everyone.
Thanks to the author for writing such a wonderful book.

Author - Smita Pal '26 Words' is a collection of Short stories by Smita Pal. 26 stories, starting with 26 alphabets and each story dealing with sensitive topics of the present social scenario of India. I enjoy reading short stories as it could be completed in a short span.
Each story deals with a social issue which force us to revaluate our thinking and the way of our life.

I would praise the brave efforts of the author for raising some sensitive topics of child abuse domestic violence and extra marital affairs through her book.
The stories are of a common person who faces varied problems in life and specifically the problems of the Indian woman, such as, eve-teasing, maternity leave, extra marital affairs, gender wage gap, etc. are beautifully focused.
Each story is unique and narrated in a way that I felt being part of the stories.

My review.
26 words: A book with 26 short stories on social issues prevailing in India. The issue have been boldly discussed by the author through these stories.
.
.
Reading the title itself could give us faint clue about the terrific idea author has used to represent her stories. Each story is based on a word starting with a letter of the alphabet (A-Z), and a social issue begining with the same letter. I think the author has done an incredible job here. Moreover another thing which I noticed is that the names of the protagonists of each story also begin with the same alphabet as that of the word of the story. The cover of the book is simple yet the strongest. The writing is engaging with the usage of a strong vocabulary. The stories were a delight to the soul filling me with utter warmth. The author has not only mentioned the issues but also have tried to give us a que through her stories. Along with the major issues, many other inconspicuous issues have been strongly discussed and an absolute attempt has been made to give a blissful end to the stories. Much obliged to the author for bringing us an incredible book with an amazingly innovative idea.

I find this book very different from others that is because of its different forms. As the title says 26 words, the book is a collection of 26 different short stories.
The cover is attractive and deep whereas the title completely suits the book and that is the uniqueness of the book.

There are 26 alphabets in English, so the title of every story starts with a unique alphabet.
All stories will leave a strong impact over reads. Most of the stories focus on social issues like child abuse, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, child labour, Peer pressure and etc. There is some new topic which she covers in her book which is very common problems around but nobody dares to react to that.

Some stories which I liked the most -
A story of generations young and old
A story on unequal pay
The story of a survivor
A story about pressure on kinds

Although all stories are really good. The writing style of Smita Pal is very interesting and appreciable. The language used is simple and easy to understand.
This book will take you to a different zone.
Overall it's a great collection of heartwarming stories. If you're into short stories then must go for this.

Utmost common issues faced by different sects of the society.

As the title says it, the book 26 Words is based on 26 letters of the English alphabets.
Each of the 26 letters of the alphabetic series represent a social issue and a story based on it.

Just by having a look at the Contents page of the book one can make our that the book has been written to focus upon the issues faced, majorly by the women of the society and also some others that can be seen very commonly in our day to fay lives but we all tend to see to it through the corner of our eyes and let them be.
Some of these are:
B for Bangles; A Tale of a Bride & Dowry
E for Escalator; Eve Teasing- An Everyday Problem
H for Hair; A story of Sexual Harassment at Workplace
S for Saree; the story of a Survivor
Z for Zodiac; a Story of unmatched Zodiacs

Every title in this book totally does justice to the story that it focuses upon.
What I genuinely loved about this book was that how short and crisp the writing and the plot were and at the same time they were completely engaging to the core since all the issues were so common that anybody could relate to them in their day to day lives without a miss.

26 words by Author Smita, is a beautiful compilation of 26 short stories with an even more beautiful and creative concept. I’ve never come across a better and more creative use of the 26 alphabets of the English language!

The stories are each based on the alphabets like A for Apple, B for Bangles, H for Hair and so on...
All these short stories are based on social stigmas of present day and the author has amazingly brought these out in broad daylight through her writing. In one story she talks on as sensitive a topic as extra marital affairs, while in another, she is talking about a social stigma like Female Foeticide.

There’s an extremely thin line between an expressive and over-expressive or offensive writing which Smita seems to have perfectly balanced in her book. Some stories were an eye opener for me as well, such that I also got a new perspective to look at such issues with. So I’d definitely recommend this one to one and all.

Especially during lockdown times, it gives us enough free time to introspect on such things and try to bring about a necessary change in society.

Kudos to the author, for this book is one of its kind.

26 Words is a compilation of twenty-six short stories on sensitive topics. The author has compiled the book in a unique way. The stories are presented in the alphabetical order of 26 English letters. She has touched many serious social issues like compulsory education, dowry demand, domestic violence, child abuse, sexual harassment, etc. These problems are entwined in our present lives and somewhere, somebody is going through this day-to-day. The book is written mainly with the female perspective, i.e., correlating social issues with females.
I am spellbound and thrilled to know that how one can throw light on such sensitive topics using twenty-six alphabets and able to correlate and penned them so beautifully.
The stories are dark, dense and sensitive, yet there is an element of 'HOPE' in every story.

•This book is worth reading.
•The language of the book is easy and lucid. However, I find that there are some misspelt words and grammatical mistakes (though that can be ignored when the book is such a good read).
•The cover of the book is beautiful and eye-catching.
•The narrative style of the author is impressive.
.
Overall, I recommend this book.

Few years ago, on Zee Tv there used to be a Hindi serial (unfortunately I don't recall name🤦‍♀️) where every episode was an enactment of a short story which used to be amusing and at the same time with a meaningful message. I used to love those episodes. While reading this book, I had similar delightful experience.🌼🌼🌼

Book 26 Words is a compilation of 26 short stories where author is highlighting social issues and their after effects on society.
Author Smita has ensured that reader enjoys story and at the same time muses about these sensitive social topics. Like taste of coffee, for some time stories lingers on your mind.🌼🌼🌼

Narration is simple and effective to express author's feelings. This book can be a virtuous choice to start journey of reading English books as language is easy.
My favourite story was female foeticide for its unforeseen ending. Most stories subtly share author's point of view without inferring as moral stories.🌼🌼🌼

But I would have preferred more creative titles for short stories as literal names gives away story suspense.I would like to rate this short story book 4 out of 5 for its subtle narration towards dark social traditions and predicaments.🤓

I was fascinated by the title of the book, so I picked it up and it turned out most unique. As mentioned in title, it consists of 26 short stories. And that 26 number represents every English alphabet. The story started from words that started from A and then in sequence there are 26 stories till Z. That is something unique. And all the stories have some social elements like peer pressure, extra marital affairs etc. I liked concept of all the stories and most importantly, I found unmatched zodiac the most. Because that was quite fascinating for me. I am not generally short story type person but I loved the concept of this book. So I am glad that I picked this up. It’s difficult to write short stories as such you have limited words and entire concept to write. And author has done amazing job in that. The other thing I liked the narration style and concept. That made stories unique in nature. The language of the book is lucid so everyone can pick that up. Overall good one. Recommended from my side.

Book : 26words
Author : Smita Pal
So basically this book is a collection of short stories and all are focused on different social issues which are mostly related to women . The "26words" title is related to the 26 alphabets . Every short story begins with an alphabet and all of those stories are upto spreading awareness on many important sensitive issues that India's mentality is still not able to cope up with . All stories are presented by a feminist , as well as the one who believes in fairism . I love the way in which she has presented the sensitive issues of our society in such easy and understandable language. Every chapter has the power to arise and build up thoughts of the readers towards the issue that she has presented in every story . Every story had great impact on me too . So many emotions are collectively depicted in all the stories in a very nice way by the author that one feels attached to story and the characters. I loved the book too much. This is one of the finest books, I have read ever . Everyone must read it. .

'26 Words' by Smita Pal is an innovativer read with an unique and distinctive concept. The books index gives away the basic Crux of book. It is a book meant to shed light on the sensitive social battles that we have to come across and face to survive the society and its standards. The story 'D' for dowery and 'U' for unwanted dowery are few of those.

There are 26 short stories each starting from an alphabet in alphabetical order and each one of the story centers around a particular social issue that people have to struggle with and is told from a female perspective.

The stories are short and to the point with hope for solving the issue incorporated in it. The narrative is smooth and simple. The title is perfectly suitable to the concept of the book.

The book cover is relatable to the book concept and is easy on the eyes with the girl walking away on a dark path ahead ( on the path of freedom, I suppose ) and a pegion,
A symbol of peace, being released from human hands to fly free in the open sky.
