Expect a short read that is just over fifty pages. Expect a book that tells us a rag-to-riches kind of a story. Expect a book that sheds some necessary light on the ugly realities of the sex trade. Expect a book that narrates the story of a brave woman who dares to dream big.
** Who can read? **
The English is simple and can be easily read by a beginner-level reader. There is a generous use of vernacular Hindi in the dialogues which might make it difficult for non-Hindi readers. Further, the subject and the content make the book infeasible for underage readers.
** How good is the writing? **
Some of the things that stand out in Anuj’s writing are - getting the backdrop right, ample use of vernacular to amplify the ambiance, and attention to detail. Whether it is the background of the Lal Nagar locality or the dusty rooms of the Kotha, whether it is the backstory of the main character Nayana or details about the benevolent Parsi book dealer – Anuj pays attention to detail and is able to paint a vivid picture of his characters and settings.
Despite that, there are certain areas where the book underscores. These have been mentioned in the subsequent paragraphs.
** Let’s talk about the characters **
In Kranti: Ab Ek Sex Worker Ki Beti Banegi Ek Police Officer, we see a diverse range of characters, each with their own dynamic personalities and quirks. The good thing is that most of these characters are not one-dimensional. Instead, they embody a wide variety of emotions and sentimentalities. Sometimes they are meek, sometimes strong. Sometimes honest and upright, but at other times, cunning and shrewd. Some of them also undergo transformations and a massive change of heart.
** How good is the climax? **
The climax is neither bad nor good. It is a mediocre one that manages to give a decent conclusion to the story of Kranti, but at the same time, doesn’t manage to shine. It is also quite predictable.
** A peek into the world of sex workers **
Kranti: Ab Ek Sex Worker Ki Beti Banegi Ek Police Officer offers a realistic peek into the world of sex workers. The realities of their life right from their unfortunate and forced beginnings, their initiation into the trade, to their pathetic living and working conditions. It offers us a brutally vivid portrayal of the life of these unfortunate women.
** What I didn’t like? **
The biggest flaw of the book is its editing. There are many mistakes in the book, enough to significantly impact the reading experience. Not just grammatical errors, there are simple errors too. For example, the character of Nayana has three different spellings throughout the book – Nayana, Nayna, and Nayan. Also, there are many issues concerning the use of commas and other punctuation.
** What did I like? **
The book talks of a strong woman character who, despite all odds against her, manages to make a name for herself, and achieve what she has always wanted to. This, for me, is one of the strongest points of the book.
** What could have been better? **
The story is very linear. It follows a linear path and a cliché and predictable timeline. A lot more work needs to be done on developing some side plots, introducing some mysterious angles, shrouding some of the characters in layers of mystery, and making the book fast-paced and more interesting.
To succeed... you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you.... Tony Dorsett This novella is an inspiring story of a girl called Kranti, who despite being the daughter of a sex worker , aspires to become a police officer one day. Being born and brought up in a brothel Kranti is determined to clean up the city she lives in from all the criminal activities along with the flesh trade her mother and aunts are in . Read the book to know more.
The cover and the title are chosen are aptly chosen. The characters are well placed. The descriptive narration gives a glimpse of the brothel life and the problems faced by the inmates. Furthermore the author goes on to explain how young innocent girls are made to compromise and accept their fate in this flesh trade. The reader is taken on a roller coaster of emotions as some parts are heart wrenching.
Though the author has planned the plot well , the editing has been completely ignored. The readers tend to lose interest with grammatical errors and the spelling mistakes that are found in the book.
Book Title: Kranti: Ab Ek Sex Worker Ki Beti Banegi Ek Police Officer Author: Anu Tikku Format: Kindle
Book Title: The title of the book Kranti: Ab Ek Sex Worker Ki Beti Banegi Ek Police Officer is emotional, thought-provoking and inspiring.
Book Cover: The cover image of the book is a collage of a young woman in uniform and in casual attire. This is one of the interesting cover images I saw in recent days.
My review: The story, as the title hints, is about a girl born out of flesh trade. Her determination as she grows up to become a police officer in order to curb the criminal abuses that people, especially in the brothel houses, undergo is the crux of the story. With a great and nail-biting narration, this story of Kranti which means revolt is an interesting novella.
Characters: All the characters with a realistic approach and background have been sketched very well.
Narration: The narration in this book of 52 pages is the strength of the story. The way the author expressed the emotions, difficulties and a daughter's determination is excellent. The strength of a wounded woman is shown in an elegant manner. The realistic and nerve pinching details will stay in a reader's mind for a longer time.
Language & Grammar: Simple and easy language is used in the book. This is one of the common points that I have observed from Anuj Tikku's books. The easy language helps the readers to connect with the story quite faster.
My Final Verdict: A book that shows the darker side of life.
Book Title: 3/5 Book Cover: 3/5 Inside the book: 4/5 Characters: 3/5 Narration: 4/5 Language & Grammar: 3/5 Final Rating: 4/5
Format: Kindle Edition Cover of the book: 4/5 rating; apt, relevant and most importantly it draws the attention of readers more. Title of the book: 4/5; intriguing and the major reason why I chose the book to read Overall vibe of the book: I started reading with a bit of curiosity but it turned out to be such an educational experience with respect to the understanding of sex workers life and definitely it kept me up till I completed the very last word of the book. I would rate the vibe to be 3.9/5 Theme: it is about a child born for a sex worker in brothel and how she is perceived in the eyes the society and the things she goes through the same. Avoiding spoilers, all I would like to say is that this book is the need of the hour and the author has beautifully put forth the same. 5/5 rating for the theme. Pros and cons of the book PROS 1. Good flow of content 2. Good command over language by the author 3. educational CONS Nothing as such overall: 4.5/5 rating Recommended for: everyone.
This book “Kranti” is a story of a daughter of a sex worker. She has been called names being a daughter of a whore. But, her life takes a different twist and turns, she becomes successful and takes care of her mother for every need and protects her. Not just her mother but other Kotha workers. This book is inspiring and gave goosebumps as it is not just a simple story but a difficult one.
Imagining one’s life in a pithole of Brothel and living 24/7 in that environment is very difficult and becoming someone successful and dreaming to be a police officer is another level.
Not just Kranti, other sex worker and their families go through so many struggles but a little silver lining makes a big difference.
This has been an inspiration and a roller-coaster story.
It is a short story and a fast pacing one. Characters have been chosen carefully. Narration is average but plot is solid.
Kranti: Ab Ek Sex Worker Ki Beti Banegi Ek Police Officer is a very very interesting read. It depicts how the daughter of a sex worker aspires to become a police officer. The author has beautifully narrated the story and the brothel life. "It doesn't matter what our circumstances are, if we are determined, we can achieve achieve anything," and Kranti lives by this quote. The cover is very well designed according to the theme of the novella. I highly recommend this book. Do give it a read.
