Absolutely Stupendous !!!!! I loved this book ! Jill captured my attention from the very first word and held it throughout the book! I finished the book within 7 hours of opening it ! Can't wait for the next !
**I generously received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review**
I was very intrigued by the premise of this book. Christina (who prefers to be called Xtina - frankly I, not even sure how to say that) finds herself in the uncomfortable position of going home after the unexpected death of both her parents in what seems to have been a nasty car accident. She’s very conflicted going there, because her parents were extremely abusive, but also because the majority of the townspeople think she’s some kind of freak.
Christina (sorry, I just can’t bring myself to call her Xtina, it’s just too Christina Aguilera for me) has abilities. When she touches people, she sees things - things they’re thinking about, their pasts, etc. She also has other abilities. When she meets the hot new neighbor across the street, a retired cop with demons of his own named Mike, there’s some major chemistry. A romance quickly develops.
But there are a lot more things going on in this little town than it seems. This was, unfortunately, where the book derailed a bit for me. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll just say there’s at least one murder to be solved, an unexpected connection brought in, a mystery man, another guy with some “abilities” - it’s just a LOT, particularly for a book that was only 265 pages.
Also, while I liked Christina and Mike, and we as readers are led to believe they may have some kind of soulmate connection, I just didn’t quite FEEL the chemistry between them. I also questioned how easily Christina seemed to step back into life in the small town she hates, in the house filled with bad memories, because her actions didn’t line up to her WORDS (hating the town, feeling uncomfortable there, etc). Did I mention when Christina has visions she often either pukes or passes out? At one point, Mike apologized for having left her in public by herself after she had a vision that left her passing out in a grocery store and hitting her head on something, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I didn’t like the implication that she needed a minder. How had she managed on her own all this time?
But the cardinal sin was the book ending on a cliffhanger. I absolutely hate, hate that in a book, and frankly I think it’s unfair to the reader who loyally purchased and read your book. So for that, I’ve got to downgrade my rating a little.
I did feel the story and the author’s writing had a lot of potential, it just needed refinement. And as I said, I am a huge sucker for books featuring heroines with psychic abilities and found that aspect fascinating.
I’m rating the book a 3, but feel it was closer to a 2.5.
Absolutely a suspense filled page turner! I finished it in 5 hours I couldn't put it down! Loved the paranormal added in ,very well done even for people that may not usually read it! Romance, suspense, paranormal you will not be disappointed! Loved the main character Christina! Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley in exchange for my honest review! Can't wait to read the next ones!
I couldn’t connect with this book at all, can’t pinpoint exactly why but it couldn’t hold my interest and I wasn’t interested in what happened to the characters, so a no from me
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Let me first start with the fact that I rarely give a 5 star rating. Most books typically fall into either a 3 star - it was entertaining, but not the best book ever or 4star-it was a really good book. I reserve 5 stars for books that I find exceptionally well done. To achieve that the book has to have well developed characters that have interactions between them that are reasonable and true to their developed personality traits. It must have a plot that sucks me in and keeps me turning pages that is not only interesting and entertaining, but engrossing as well as believable. Finally the book must leave me thinking about it for days after I finish it. This book does all of that!
This is the first foray into the paranormal for this author and I think she hit it out of the park. I usually read the first few chapters and set the book down to think about the characters and let them fully flesh out in my mind, however, with this book I just couldn't put it down and leave it alone. The story is somewhat fast paced and kept you turning pages to see what was happening next. There are several sub-stories woven in to keep you interested in the side characters as well. While this book could easily be a stand alone, I really hope that the author develops it into a series as there were several side characters that could be more fully developed into main characters of their own book. The ending reminded me of Iris Johansen's current trilogy as the books end at what could be considered a beginning.
While this author is typically a romantic suspense writer, this paranormal foray definitely has all the elements to keep her current fan base happy as well as opening the door for new fans.
I was given a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review and this is the first time that I have ever given a review copy a 5 star rating! I honestly loved the book and recommend that others read it as well.
"The Awakening" by Jill Sanders is a captivating read that'll draw you in with its enchanting story and well-developed characters, leaving you eager for more from this talented author.
I like book about seers, mediums, clairvoyants, psychics, people who can touch someone and can see everything about the lives of those she’s touching, that kind of thing. So, I liked this book. It was about parents that were such religious fanatics that they tortured their kid, starting when she was four, trying to get the devil out of her. And it’s about Xtina, who hid she powers from everyone, UNTIL she didn’t. It’s about her neighbor, Michael, who had a ghostly visitor every night but Xtina had seen the ghost her whole life. Xtina had left home as soon as she could but was now back home for her parents’ funeral. And, of course, she didn’t mind at all that they were dead.
It was one little mystery after another and that made it interesting all the way through. I’ve read 7 other books by Ms. Sanders but this is my favorite.
There is graphic sex in this. There's NO sexual tension or sexual attraction, no desire, no want, no thoughts or feeling. Just sex! And there's a little swearing, but not much. Good thing the storyline was good.
********* NOW THE BAD NEWS!! Michael, Xtina, Jess and Jacob are sitting in the living room talking about what Jacob had “seen” when Xtina told them they’d have to wait until everyone was there before she could tell them. Then the doorbell rang and Xtina stands there staring at the person at the door and the book ended. A CLIFFHANGER? Really? AND the next book isn’t due out until the Spring of 2017? WTF? Had I known I would NEVER have bought this book. I read/listen to 3 to 5 books a week. Do you really think I'll remember this book next Spring? That's laughable! *********
As to the narrator: Actually, there was a lot of laughter in this book and Roy Samuelson did not laugh once. And when he and Jacob were in the woods trying to sneak up on the bad guys his voice was just about yelling during the conversation Michael and Jacob were having while they made their plans. So, no, I thought Roy Samuelson stunk. All his women’s were rather manly but every man had his own specific voice. I would definitely try not to want a book where he was the narrator.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author ~ and it won’t be my last! I loved this story! I liked the characters and connections. I like Ms. Sanders style of writing. I liked the magical gift of the characters and how it brought them together. I did not see the twist in the end. Which is good, because usually you can guess what’s going to happen. I highly recommend this story. Especially if you like a little magic.
I really liked this book. The characters are extremely likable and brave, when faced with some supernatural events that lead to mystery, intrigue, and love. This book is part of a sequel, so be prepared to purchase the next book in the series to find out what’s really going on in the mud Georgia town! I’m about to start the next. Can’t wait!
Oh, Jill Sanders. Let me count the ways in which this book thrilled me. I received a copy of this book from my friends at NetGalley (they’re my favourite). I have not read any other works by this author, but I am truly enamoured with the series after reading the first book.
To briefly break down the plot of this book, I will start by telling you that it is a paranormal/mystery/romance book. If you aren’t into fiction that requires you to think outside the box, this book is probably not for you. However, I do think it has the power to convert you! Christina is the strong female main character and she is returning to her home town to attend her parents’ funeral after a tragic car accident. Christina isn’t exactly grieving as her parents were horrible to her throughout childhood and inflicted cruel and unusual punishments on her. At the beginning, we don’t have a clear understanding that she has this strange gift that allows her to see into the future and revise people’s memories when she touches them. Its a gift that her parents attempted to beat and pray out of her throughout her childhood.
When she returns to her family home, she notices that the neighbouring cottage has a light on, which was not typically the case since the family who resided there had moved. She decides to see what is going on over there and stumbles upon the hot and sexy ex-cop Michael. That girl got someone looking out for her, at least in the guy department.
Michael is an ex cop from the Atlantic PD who after a tragic incident whereby his partner was killed after attempting to kill him, he was forced out of the department. Since he has moved into the cottage, he sees a “ghost” every night and up until he discovers Christina being a peeping tom, figured he was the only one who could see her.
They ultimately form a friendship / romance and Christina discloses her gift to him. The odd thing is that she cannot read him with her gifts. I can’t imagine sexy time with a man when you can see all their memories and feelings. That just sounds awkward and disturbing. Christina and Mike come to share a friend in common, Jessica. Jess had a quick fling with Mike before Christina returned and things went down hill. There is some tension in the air in the beginning but Jess is a good sport about it.
Later we come to find out the meaning of the ghost’s story which lands them in some hot water. Of course there are other twists and turns along the way, such as a secret love child and some history between the main characters parents-I mean let’s keep it interesting. Ultimately, Christina is kidnapped by her crazy ass ex boyfriend who ran a cult and thinks that her powers are his to own. The guy gets shot. Well, deserved if you ask me. The guy seemed like a real douche canoe.
The book ends on cliffhanger and I don’t want to spoil the fun for anyone looking to read this masterpiece from Jill Sanders. I would highly recommend this book to those who love a good paranormal romance. I read it in one day and honestly, I’m buying the second in the series to continue with my reading adventures with the Scooby Doo team.
Hey Jill… you’ve gained one new lover of your writing. <3
Christina Warren aka Xtina had a tough childhood, she possessed supernatural abilities that scared the people in her hometown especially her own parents. They would call her names and tormented her. She left Hidden Creek, Georgia and swore she would never return there again.
When her parents unexpectedly passed away, Christina had to come back to Hidden Creek to take care of their affairs. She met the new neighbor who was living with an entity in the McCullen's former house which was now his.
Michael Kincaid aka Mike was a former military man and police officer of the Atlanta Police Department. When he was betrayed by his corrupted partner, Michael decided to leave Atlanta and moved to Hidden Creek, Georgia.
For an entire year he had been visited by the apparition of a woman who seemed to need his help. He shared his experience with his psychiatrist only but to be mocked and given more medications for PTSD.
Everything changed when he met his beautiful neighbor, Christina Warren. He saw how she didn't feeak her out when he told her about the woman. In that moment he knew she was special. Now a P. I. Michael wanted to know what happened to Xtina when she was small.
As they got to know each other, they found out that they both had abilities that worked best when they were together. In other words there was a deep connection between Mike and Xtina.
Also they couldn't find out what the entity wanted from them. Xtina no longer was hiding her abilities from people, her best friend Jessica always knew and supported her.
Mike found out some life altering news which was a surprise to him at first but as time went by, he saw what a blessing that say news was. The little circle was growing still some major players were missing.
"Will all the pieces fall into place!?"
THE AWAKENING is the first book in Jill Sanders first paranormal series, ENTANGLED. It was fun-filled, engrossing, mysterous and a must read. Mrs Sanders has another mind-blowing series on her hands. 5+++
Jill Sanders is one of my most favorite Authors. I wouldn't have believed this book is her first paranormal if I didn't already know and read most of this author's romance novels. I love this story, how Jill Sanders wrote how very strict and strange Christina's upbringing was. Christina is quite different, possesses very special abilities and has heightened senses, especially touch and sight but there is so much more to this special woman. Christina was treated awful from her family and the community, they were all very cold and unable to accept her. Her parents tortured her to rid her of her devil possessed spirit. She had bad experiences as a child in school and the author was able to show how it shaped her as she went through life. Jill Sanders portrayed what happened to her that made her not want to come back to Hidden Creek nor stay there once she had to return to bury her parents after their deaths. Christina and her best friend met in school and they became friends when no one else would befriend her. They remained BFs no matter what and loyal to each other through adulthood. Christina is drawn to the immensely handsome next door neighbor that is new to her parents home. Likewise, Michael the new neighbor can't stay away from Christina. I love the paranormal, the mystery of this story and the romance that grows between them. This story has many different twists and turns in it plus family dynamics and surprises for Michael and his brother that were big family secrets. But that is not all that were kept secrets, there were secrets that kept the paranormal part that brought Michael and Christina together in the first place. This is a great read and it was a book that I could not put down no matter what, except when I woke up with my tablet still in my hands. If you are a person that loves paranormal, excitement, love stories and a bit of danger, this story is for you! I cannot wait for the next book in this series.

This book is so fun!!! The Awakening is completely different from what Jill Sanders usually writes and I absolutely LOVED it!! She totally rocked her first paranormal book!!
The paranormal twist in this story made this book ADDICTING! I got so attached to these characters, I can not wait for what comes next! I feel like I have a new group of best friends and I want "powers" too!
Jill Sanders has the amazing ability to hook you into the story right from the start and then she holds you prisoner until the very end. She captivates you!!
I really loved this book!! If you love Jill Sanders or anything paranormal, I know you will absolutely love The Awakening!!
Christina's life has always been 'different'. When her parents found out she had special "powers" they tried everything to rid her of them, mainly in not very nice ways. The story starts when Christina moves back home to her parents' house when they were both killed in an accident.
She reconnects with her best friend Jessie and finds a great connection with her new neighbour Mike, and gradually one by one, new connections that will help her settle back into Hidden Creek, but this time with a new outlook on life, one where she is in control of her destiny.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Christine returning to settle her folks estate. A place that was not a welcome to her, the judgment of parents and peers. She has come to accept her unique gift, and now meeting the unusual neighbor. He needed a quiet town, but with his nightly visitor it hasn’t been. When Christina can also see this apparition, they start to share. Other characters with gifts are introduced, and a good beginning to a new series.
This story has no emotional connective tissue. I just couldn't jive with it at all. Scenes inexplicably meander disjointedly one from the other. Questions and plot points are almost always immediately answered or resolved in the next paragraph deflating any sense of tension and the overarching mystery doesn't gain any sort of shape or sense what it even is until the final pages. As far as the emotional hurdles the protagonist has to face, I felt utterly no stirrings for her whatsoever.
Just wow. Xtine and Michael were something entirely else. Being thrown into the fictional small town Hidden Creek and a whole bunch of people with special abilities to find myself in the middle of more than one family drama and a crime case was absolutely perfect for me. Aaaaaand albeit this story is finished, the end makes me all itchy to read the next book in the series too. Loved it.
Wonderful storyline with characters that are interesting and likable. The premise is a little off beat, very enjoyable and very well written. I am anxiously awaiting the next books.
Wow I really love paranormal story's but this book took it to another level. I loved the characters and can't wait for the next book in the series. I'm just sorry it took me so long to read it but it was worth the wait.
OMG!! What happens next......I can't wait, must read the next ones!
This was so much more than I was expecting and I loved it from the first chapter. This kept me eagerly turning page after page. The whole storyline, the suspense and mystery, the characters, the paranormal......just brilliant.
NOT MY NORMAL TYPE OF READING I PREFER TO WATCH THIS TYPE OF STUFF BUT I REALLY ENJOYED IT. THIS WAS SUPER EXCITING A 3BK SERIES (cliffhanging, another thing I dislike) BUT IT DOESEN’T HAVE A TOO BAD ENDINGS. IT JUST GENTLY SORT OF ENDS, MAKES YOU WANT TO KNOW WHATS NEXT. ;D
This is the first book I've read from this author. I enjoyed the romance, the mystery thriller, paranormal, and suspense. This book has it all with hot heroes and heroines. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
This book was racy. Had to fast forward a few sections. Story was okay. I was disappointed my library didn’t carry the other books in this series, but after finishing, I think I’m okay not listening to them. Maybe if my library does have them in the future maybe I will read it.
Omg! Book 1 has been amazing to read. So many twists and turns that it keeps you on the edge of your seat!!! Xtina is never going to feel like a freak again, power comes in numbers. A must-read by Jill Sanders.
Absolutely Stupendous !!!!! I loved this book ! Jill captured my attention from the very first word and held it throughout the book! I finished the book within 7 hours of opening it ! Can't wait for the next !
I enjoyed reading the awakening. Kept me interested in till there was no pages left to turn. I was able to read and not let list in the events of the story. Jill is an awesome author and I love her writing. I have followed and read her for years.
