What a crappy book.

Over half of this book was Ashleigh having flashbacks to Pride's Triple Crown campaign. Congratulations, author Mary Newhall Anderson, for finally reading some of the early Thoroughbred books. I guess it didn't cross your tiny little mind that most readers of this book WILL HAVE ALREADY READ THOSE PREVIOUS BOOKS.

But, then again, it's really, really hard to think up original plots for books, isn't it, Mary? So, you had a deadline. Poor you. So, you milked the back stories about ten pages, then decided to go into Ashleigh's point of view remembering about Pride. Wowzers! Now, you only have less than half a book to write! Clever you ...

... you cold, cold, horse-abusing, reader-hating IDIOT.

So, not only did you rely on OTHER WRITERS' WORKS to give you a paycheck, you COMPLETELY MISINTERPERTED what you read.

The whole point of Pride's failure to win the Triple Crown was that the Townsends over-raced him. Ashleigh did NOT in any way want to race Pride so hard.

And yet, you have Ashleigh say that she AGREED with the Townsends for racing him so hard.

THAT'S

NOT

WHAT

HAPPENED.

And not only that, you have Christina ride a race on Raven so badly, Raven has a spill and nearly has to be put down. When Christina rightly thinks of quitting being a jockey, you have Cindy say, "Accidents happen."

That's brutal, and cruel. Accidents that maim and kill horses wouldn't happen if the horses weren't raced to death. Or be so inbred that the slightest bump causes serious injury. Or be ridden by jockeys who don't know what they're doing.

And then you have Ashleigh give up being Star's trainer to Christina.

Ashleigh, who at the beginning of the book advises her brain-dead daughter to scratch Star from the Kentucky Derby because he's too tired, gives in to Christina's obsession.

And Ashleigh later would prove to have been right all along, since Star would run dead last in the Derby.

So, Mary, your advice here is:

* Race horses to death
* Have teenagers who know nothing be in charge of a million dollar Thoroughbred's career, not caring that this could impact the family business
* Just do lots of flashbacks and backstories in order to fulfill a writing contract, because money is always more important than crafting a quality story.

Fuck you and the horse that you did not ride in on, Mary.
