Dead End

Rate this book
A Young Adult Urban Fantasy Romance

Maria Guadalupe makes the earth move. Literally.

Life is complicated for seventeen-year-old, Maria Guadalupe. She has an ability that terrifies her, she's in love with a ghost who can only communicate with her through a steamy bathroom mirror, and she's on the run from a brutal man with a long reach and unlimited resources. Fortunately, she has her father with her—and her best friend, a rescue terrier named Toby.

In a last-ditch effort to protect her, Maria’s dad sends her through an interdimensional portal in a deserted café to find her grandfathers. Even her backstabbing, ghostly, now ex, boyfriend follows her there, much to her dismay.

But life in the other dimension isn't as bad as she thought it would be. In fact, it's kind of nice. Still, as much as she loves her new life in Dead End, Maria can’t be happy without her dad. She’ll do anything to get back home to make sure he’s safe from their shared enemy.

Even if it means using the ability she fears.

Dead End is a YA Urban Fantasy with a sweet romance. It contains adult situations and language.

This was a YA novel which I didnt realize immediately since I started reading it because I love all her other books. Effortless diversity as usual in this book including confronting peer pressure and bullying. The world reminded me a little bit of being on a foreign world in the Innkeepers world created by Ilona Andrews, not in a bad way but in an influenced ode way. This was confirmed when the MC talked about how she was a huge fan of Ilona Andrews. I added the point for world building and diversity. I enjoyed the book and will read the next one, I just felt it was definitely YA and I prefer the other series a lot more.

Urm, that’ll be a pass from me.

I picked this up as it was co-authored by CP Rider, and I have been loving her series with Spiker, Neely, but I wasn’t at all into these characters or the world at all. The dynamics between the protagonist and her grandfathers was meh (Grandpa Holli was a sweetie, but abeulo was a judgemental jerk for 98% of the book), and her father was quite emotionally manipulative at times. The only characters that I actually didn’t mind were Samuel and Cindy. Just too YA for my tastes. I’ll wait for the next Sundance book to get my UF fix.

Lions, Earth movers, and Bears Oh My

I felt like I returned to Oz with the world and characters C. P. Rider describes in this book. Her take on a possible alternative world is very interesting and intriguing. Her tapestry of words is woven in a way that had me spellbound. The way the words flowed I didn't want to put it down and enjoyed getting lost in her fantasy. This book is for people from teens to older adults who want to lose themselves jnto a fun and sometimes a little bit scary story. Bravo C. P. On making a cold, rainy day less gloomy for me!

Great New Series

This series is really fun. I enjoyed the world building and the characters. If you have read other books by C. P. Rider such as the Sundance series, then you’ll really like this book as well. I especially liked the part about the lawn flamingos and the garden gnomes (lol). I can’t recommend it enough. If you like Ilona Andrews or Nalani Singh, you will enjoy this author.

I’m not sure I like this book. Love the author, love the premise. Good writing. It’s the main character I don’t like, also a couple secondary. They just feel jarring, like there’s really nothing to make them appealing. There was a whole lot to introduce in this book though, so Maybe there will be more time to like the characters in future stories. Generous 4 for the author and her world building skills, but it took me weeks to finish this.

The YA factor was higher than I expected, but the world Rider and Pitones created was such fun! I'll probably continue with the series, but not as enthusiastically as Rider's Sundance series (adult UF+romance & highly recommended).

3.5 stars rounded up to 4!

I would like to preface this review by saying I really liked the premise and the story but I also think I’m outgrowing YA books. Like if I was 17 I would’ve ate this up and then some but I’m not so it was just a good book.

That being said we do witness Maria and her friends go through some emotional growth and help each other begin to heal from their traumas. I do wish we had seen her and Aedan’s relationship develops instead of just being told there was one because when the stakes where supposed to be high I didn’t feel it, and when she found out his secrets but couldn't help being around him, I didn’t understand how.
