Alone and trapped by a dangerous arctic storm, two young men have no choice but to confront their feelings for each other.
It's always been Kotzebue and Selawik against the world. Well, not the world, but their pack's conservative elders and the wilderness of the arctic.
But for six months his cousin hasn't said a word to him, not since Kotze's foolishness almost cost him his life. Trying to tame his own wild side with chores for the pack seems like the least he can do to make amends, but when the elders reject his request to join the annual whale hunt, Kotze has had enough.
When he goes into the wild, he just means to get away from them all for a while.
For Selawik, keeping his distance from his impulsive younger cousin is as necessary as it is painful. But when Kotze leaves their territory on the eve of the first big storm of winter, Selawik's determination breaks and he goes after him.
But their reunion in the harsh isolation of winter might be hotter than either of them expected and in the dark eye of the storm, they might at last see the light.
"A Light in Winter" is a short Omegaverse romance about two best friends forced to confront their secrets.
N.J. Lysk (pronouns: whatever) is a queer one—in almost every sense of the word—for whom stories have always been their one true home. She studied linguistics and literature (which is to say, someone offered him a genuine excuse to read professionally) and ended up teaching, but writing is their one true love.
Addicted to angst, enamoured of mpreg and always ready to try a new kink (in a book, that’s it!) she became hooked into the Omegaverse through fanfic (but he doesn't have the patience to write other people's characters) and has recently expanded from werewolves to hockey players.

All the good stuff I love about N. J. Lysk’s work without being too dark for me to handle right now. Nothing better than getting to know the characters and getting to that part where it all becomes clear. You know what I mean. When you’re reading head you expect to hear angels sing and see rainbows it’s so beautiful. Yeah totally felt that here. That’s the stuff of a good read. And yes I am aware this is written poorly but it’s pure after book feels speak lol.
Cold, the cold of winter, the chill of the Elders' decisions, the frozen emotions of holding back an attraction that their society denied them. Heat, the warmth of affection, the heat of bitter angry guilt, the hot moments of connection between two souls destined for each other. With an intuitive world construction, this short story slowly builds an ambience beyond the physical world and into a particular society's structure. The painting of the characters, starting with a stark sketch and gradually filling in nuanced shadows, finer details, and finally strong, heady colours leaves the reader with an almost bitter, yet at the same time empowering, sensation that the two protagonists can be each other's strength, hold one another's heart, and face together the world that would have them deny their deepest identities, their own selves, their love.
Kotze is needing alone time from the watchful eyes of the village. He was reckless with the care of his older omage cousin awhile back and he was suffering in silence. When Selawik years that his beta has run off into the woods, guilt drives him to look for him before the storm comes. Neither is prepared for what is happen as Selawik has a flare of heat but Kotze's a beta, how? Not to mention his cousin. Long withheld desire is about to over flow in the small cave but what happens when they head back to the real world.
I just love that N.J. has recorded this book in her own wonderful own voice, it just bring the author closer to her fans in my opinion.
a beautiful and enjoying story of a rebellious beta (or is he) and his older cousin omega. the usual you expect from the author, mixed emotions, each paranormal shifter silently in love with each other, afraid to say the obvious openly, especially to each other. though a HEA, it does leave questions of sorts for their future of these two mates.
