“2002” is a song performed by Anne-Marie that cleverly weaves together lines from different songs that were popular in the year 2002. The song is full of nostalgia and memories, as Anne-Marie sings of her adolescent days of 2002. Some experiences in the lyrics include first kisses, acting like adults at the age of eleven, dancing with friends, and singing popular songs with the radio. This song works with the concept of Experience simply because it is about the adolescent experience.

While today’s middle schoolers were not adolescents during 2002, they do have their own set of songs that are popular now and that were popular in previous years. For example, if they were to have a song based upon their adolescence, the chorus would have lines from various TikTok songs, but the general teenage activities might look similar. Middle schoolers can appreciate this song for the way that it captures the youthful spirit and desire to have fun with friends. They may also enjoy comparing adolescence as depicted in the song with the adolescent experience they are living right now. Their experiences may look very different currently, especially with the presence of Covid-19 and quarantine.

To transition into a writing activity, after listening to the first verse and chorus of this song, students can be given copies of the lyrics to use as a mentor text. Students will then use Gallagher’s “Favorites List” writing activity, where they will come up with ten songs they associate with their middle school or late elementary school years. After they form their lists, they can try to emulate Anne-Marie’s song by combining lyrics from their list of songs to create a chorus of their own. Then, students will create a T-chart in which they list their songs on one side and explanations of why each holds a special place in their memory on the other side. Teachers can extend this writing exercise into a longer assignment in which students pick one or two songs to expand upon in a paragraph.

For reference, the first verse and chorus of "2002" are:
"I will always remember
The day you kissed my lips
Light as a feather
And it went just like this
No, it's never been better
Than the summer of 2002 (ooh)
Uh, we were only eleven
But acting like grown-ups
Like we are in the present
Drinking from plastic cups
Singing, "Love is forever and ever"
Well, I guess that was true
Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods
On an old Mustang, where we sang
Songs with all our childhood friends
And it went like this, say
Oops, I got 99 problems singing bye, bye, bye
Hold up, if you wanna go and take a ride with me
Better hit me, baby, one more time, uh
Paint a picture for you and me
On the days when we were young, uh
Singing at the top of both our lungs"
