This is a wonderful guide to calligraphy, which, as the book explains, is different from cursive. Cursive is a form of handwriting created to allow humans to write quickly and efficiently without having the lift the pen very often. Calligraphy is more of an art form, and each letter is distinct from the last with the pen lifting after every single stroke the way an artist might lift a paintbrush after he has made a stroke.
This calligraphy book teaches the art quickly and efficiently, and after only a little study practice using less than half of the provided pages, I am now able to use the dictated modern calligraphy font proficiently. My only complaint is that the pages are thin (they're about as thin as normal printing paper), so when one practices with a calligraphy pen or with even a marker on the given pages, it will bleed through a little.
However, this book is extremely effective, and I've gotten wonderful results from it. I now implement the calligraphy I learned in my course notes, daily planner, letter writing, and Bible journaling. Overall, I would recommend purchasing a copy of this if YouTube tutorials and Pinterest fonts haven't been enough to prompt you to truly learn modern calligraphy for yourself.
Really bad paper quality, the sheets are way too thin but printed on both sides and there is an awful lot of ghosting -- even when you don't write, when you use the brush pen it's impossible to see what's on the other side.
This is amazing guide for begginers! The author uses a simple language and explain all "rules" very easy. You have a space to practise by follow a lines but also a space to try write by yourself! It's really helpful during learning a lettering.
Allow me to preface by saying that this book, overall, isn't the worst introduction to calligraphy and handlettering, but it certainly is amongst the worst. While I have many qualms with the alphabets the book chooses to teach, my biggest concern lies in two key factors. One, the paper quality of this book is horrendous. How, pray tell, can one write a practice book for calligraphy, suggest the use of brush pens, and then make the paper the book is printed on prone to feathering and bleeding when any form of ink-based writing utensil (including a brush pen) is used? Secondly, the book completely dismisses the use of fountain pens, as being, (I am roughly quoting here,) 'too difficult for beginners.' This is a simply untrue claim. Anyone with about two minutes of googling can learn to hold and use a fountain pen for cursive and informal printing, and then use a book to learn the finer motions that develop into calligraphy. Being the backbone of Western calligraphy, one would expect a book that claims to teach calligraphy to beginners to delve more into the fountain pen.
Overall, there are a few redeeming qualities to this book. I don't mind the time spent on brush pens, which I admit are somewhat overlooked, and many of the offered projects are somewhat fun; however, the book's poor-quality paper and utter dismissal of the fountain pen make it a poor choice for budding calligraphers.
This is a hand lettering instructional manual, not calligraphy. It has some sound practices but there are few wonky bits. On pages where you are learning lower case, the letters take up all the space between the base line and the top line. Some letters have a strange shape and not super consistent (lower case s comes to mind). I used it as a guide to teach land lettering to 7 friends; I bought each a copy of the book. They all learned a lot in my “class” but asked for a copy of my alphabet to practice with.
So called 'guide' but i rather prefer it called 'workbook'. Paper quality is quite bad and pretty thin (kinda like a cheap photocopy paper). If you use your brush pen writing on this book, surely it'll bleed through the other side of the paper. If you are newbie like me and seek a complete guide/how to, i would recommend you get other book! But if you like to practice a very simple alphabet you can go ahead with this one.
This is a good book for beginners and getting an introduction into hand lettering with lots of different ideas and projects.
However the cover material is very flimsy and I was unpleasantly surprised by it since it felt more like a photocopied book / workbook. I used tracing paper as not to damage the pages inside which are also very thin.
While it is a book rich in ideas with various beginner’s projects it lacks a little in quality which is a big pity and a bit of a disappointment.
I got this calligraphy workbook for my birthday this year and I really enjoyed it. I like being able to look at how my calligraphy has improved over the use of the workbook.
i didn’t like that this was double side as you can’t right on one side and then try to see the other side. i find the calligraphy itself to be pretty, but you can’t practice in the book.
