Grim Gate #1

Nightfall

If you have a ghost problem, who you gonna call?

Not me. Seriously.

Been there, done that, and the short time I worked as a professional medium was nothing like what you see on TV. Things are way too heavy when you’re talking to actual ghosts, and I’m pretty sure I’m the first and only person to be fired from what turned out to be a string of con-artists and fake psychics. That’s life, and after twenty-four years of being able to see and hear spirits, I’ve grown used to it.

But when demonic bounty hunters start coming after me, I realize that maybe there’s more to me than being a medium…that maybe my entire life has been nothing but fabricated memories and lies.

Right as everything is unraveling around me, I meet Ethan. I’m drawn to him as much as he scares me, as there’s no denying the darkness hiding in his hazel eyes. He knows more about my powers than I do and can help me, yet I can’t ignore how the timing of our meeting is too perfect for a mere coincidence.

As the demons close in, I’m forced to make a choice: trust Ethan or face the demons alone. One is certainly more dangerous than the other, and if I don’t choose correctly, it will cost me everything…including my heart.

1.5 stars, and I am NOT rounding this up. So much was wrong with this and I will probably end up editing this review to add stuff I already forgot about.

This was a buddy read with Jess and boy, did we complain a lot.

The author better use my money to get somebody to (properly) edit this book because dammit it needs one (or a better one). I really gave this a shot but it is just... -sigh- The reason I picked this up is because somebody on social media advertised this as "Dean Winchester but dirty AF". Has this person watched SPN or read this book? I don't think so because aside from Dean and Ethan being hunters they have nothing in common. He's not even funny, he's just good looking and buff.

Anora has zero personality, is gullible as hell and basically Bella Swan meets the Sixth Sense but in the worst way (she sees ghosts). Her whole world just comes crashing down at the start of the book when a rando from high school is saying to his friend she's still weird and unbangable after running into her in a club and talking to her for less than 5 minutes. If that's all it takes to demolish somebody's self worth completely then I have no clue how she made it to her twenties.

Everything that's happening in this book makes very little sense. We go to a location, everything that happens there gets skipped over or we get a rushed version and then we go home to yet once again watch her feed her pets. Which is a big thing here apparently because every damn time she's going to leave the house (and that's often) she is feeding her dog and her ferret. We get it. They aren't starving. I am a huge animal lover but at some point I wished her dog, ferret and horse would get offed just so I wouldn’t have to go through all those feedings again.

Soooooo much random and completely boring information gets repeated like we're listening to a broken record:

- She wore the same dress 3 times in one book and she mentions every time she's wearing it a guy once told her she reminded him of his sister.
- Did you know she's a vet tech? Because she's a vet tech. And she can handle some blood. Because of the fact that she's a vet tech, because you know, vet techs can handle a little blood.
- Drinking causes her to lower her mental shields and it keeps it harder to keep the ghosts out. She makes sure everybody and their grandmother know about that, but nobody can know she sees ghosts of course. That would be weird.
- The word cock gets repeated every other sentence during sexy times. It there really only one way to describe "his big beautiful cock"?

I was hoping the romance would save this story but alas. Ethan is her most trusted friend in less than 3 chapters, she's falling in love soon after that and honestly having to read about her peeing right after a sleep inducing sex scene really killed the mood, if there was even one to begin with. The first time they have sex he just goes in bareback and everything because STDs are a thing of the past and nobody can get pregnant accidentally. He doesn't even want to know she's on birth control (she mentions after the deed she's on "some kind of birth control" as if she forgot at the beginning of her sentence what it was) yet he’s jackhammering into her right out of the gate. But they were just so into each other and the moment, you know. Deep stuff.

So much pointless crap was going on and at the same time nothing was going on at all. They go to a location. Take about 5 breaths there, something or nothing happens and then they go home. What was the point?

Every side character is a cardboard stock puppet and the main villain of the story... (I am laughing as I type this but not because it's funny) She is literally thrown in somewhere randomly just to make sure we've heard the name before, never mentioned again and then surpriiiiiiiiiise, IT IS I, YOUR WORST ENEMY!

Jess mentioned the author seemed to have used up all the things she saw on tv and in the movies and just threw them together because name a supernatural being and it's in here: witches, warlocks, vampires, demons, werewolves, ghosts, hunters and some kind of religious order that leads them, Halliwell Manor from Charmed with blue paint and last but not least a magic school.

It's safe to say I will not continue this series and I am so bummed I already bought another book by this author. Considering this book was written after the other one I got I have very very low expectations.

I’ve read Emily Godwin’s contemporary romance novels before and really enjoyed them so when a chance to read a paranormal series came up written by her, I was very interested and excited as paranormal is one of my favorite genres to read. Ms, Goodwin did NOT disappoint me! Right from the first few pages I was pulled into the story of Anora, her dog Hunter and this mystery man, Ethan. It was the right combination of scary and sexy. I even had weird, almost scary dreams the night I read the first half! This book has everything I like about paranormal, romance, excitement, magic, demons (or other “bad guys”), scariness and a strong heroine. What I really love is that I am left with a whole lot of possibilities of “what will happen in the next book?!” I cannot wait to see where Ms Goodwin takes this series! I was already a casual fan of her writing but now, thats it, I am 100% cemented as a diehard fan!

5 PERFECTION STARS!! Here we go again with another fantastic book....I am so excited for this series. Anora and Ethan were perfection and sucked me in all the way through. I felt like I was watching movie play out, that is how good this author is with describing the scenes. This is one book you do not want to miss, so go ahead and download it now.

Unfortunately this was a miss for me. I love Emily Goodwin’s Dawson Family series, but this is the second PNR I’ve read by her and both were disappointing. I just didn’t like the writing and it didn’t resonate with me. There was way too much dialogue and every other sentence started with “I” and it just did not flow well at all. I liked the premise but not the execution. I will just stick to her contemporaries from now on.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Mmc was promoted by author as inspired by Dean from supernatural. So I expected alot, maybe that was my mistake.

It was a bit to fast burn for me. Unrealistic fast burn. Story was also a bit to fast. It had alot of potential, but it was just confusing and Unrealistic.

Such a shame 😔

Nightfall by Emily Goodwin is the first book in her Grim Gate Series, set in the Thorne Hill World, and on my GIDDY AUNT, I flipping loved it!

Anora!!! Feisty, sassy, fierce, I want to be her friend! She's open, friendly, endearing in a sort of blasé I am who I am with a shrug way and I lived for it.

And Ethan? DELICIOUS. Mysterious and charming and confident with tons of layers, and each one revealing more about the man that keeps your attention hooked and curious and hungry for more.

And don't get me started on their CHEMISTRY! Okay, too late, I'm started. It sizzled and simmers and shimmers and sparks in the air, and I loved how tangible it was!

For real though, the WORLD BUILDING is phenomenal! This story has it all! There is mystery, drama, intrigue, memories, the fantastical and paranormal, and so much more jam-packed into an action filled emotional rollercoaster ride of a journey full of twists and turns you don't see coming that will leave you breathless and swooning and on the proverbial edge of your seat! I sure was!

I am in love with this world, in love with Anora and Ethan and Hunter, and I CANNOT WAIT for more in this series! How long do I have to wait for Starfire again?!

P. S. The whole host of secondary characters are so interesting and fun! Also, adore Harrison! And Laney!

Cocktails and Books received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect our opinion of the book or the content of our review.

I will admit, I knew about the Grim Gate series and had it on a list of books to check out. So when the author offered a chance to review it, I jumped on it and loved it.

If you've read the author's Thorn Hill series, you'll recognize some places and a few familiar names, since this happens in this same world...but a bit different.  Anora discovers she's inherited from a great-aunt she can't remember and then her world turns upside down with supernatural creatures, magic and a very hot hunter in Ethan.

I loved Anora.  There were aspects of her that reminded me of Callie, but in a more naive way.  She's a protector of those she loves, even if she's terrified.  That sense matches perfectly with Ethan.  He may have wanted to protect Anora, but he was also willing to stand by her side and help her understand who and what she is, rather than keep her in a pretty box.  It really made them the perfect couple...especially when his hunter family wasn't always that friendly to her.

The suspense with the demon after Anora was good, keeping me guessing until the end.  The series was set up nicely with this book and I'm hoping we can some intersection with the Thorne Hill series since it appears Anora should have been part of their group growing up.  I look forward to more from this series.

I bought this because I saw a tiktok that said it was Dean Winchester in book form. Of course I had to buy it! BUT while this had some decent moments it also had too much going on. This was not a spicy Dean Winchester story (sad) but a very messy story about a medium who isn't actually just a medium and is also being hunted by demons. It definitely felt like this book was just a big info dump to set up for a series and while I enjoyed some of it, I have no interest in continuing at the moment.

Things I didn't like:
-really unnecessary dialogue and scenes that made the book feel like it was dragging on.
-main characters has a dog named Hunter and a brother named Harrison and for whatever reason it was such a struggle to keep them straight while reading
-ever so subtle messages of fat-phobia such as, joking about gaining 100 pounds after eating a couple nights of takeout, and a direct quote "I should be nervous, self-conscious and hating the way my thighs don't gap like they did when I was twenty-one"
-random mean girl who is only mean because she's "lost a lot of people" but then is suddenly not mean when the main character loses someone.
-all the unprotected sex that was made a-okay because the main character "has an IUD" despite, you know, STDs being a thing still?

I have been in love with the Thorne Hill series since it began but adding the Grim Gate series, MIND BLOWN! I could not get enough! Anora is so fierce and feisty but is also so fragile in some ways because of how she is different from her family. The concept behind Nightfall is beyond amazing. I could not put it down once I started. What began as a story of a girl who could see ghosts, turns into something so raw and intense that you get wrapped up in this world that Goodwin has created. Between discovering more about herself and having Ethan thrown into her world, there are a lot of ups and downs with twists and turns. It is fast paced and intense!
Between the relationship build of Ethan and Anora to why she is all of a sudden a target and these powers start to rise, Goodwin created a story that will keep you on your toes and completely breathless. I love the attention to detail that Goodwin has given this story as it flows perfectly with the Thorne Hill series. If you like unique paranormal, then this one is for you! But check out Thorne Hill because Callie is epic too!

Fantastic Spin-off!!

Wow! I am really, really digging this new paranormal Thorne Hill spinoff by Emily Goodwin. This is the first (of many I hope) in the new Grim Gate series, and it features new characters (although many characters from Thorne Hill are mentioned!).

Anora doesn't know that she's a witch until strange things start happening around her.... she's always been able to see ghosts, but this is strange even for her. A strange wolf-like creature is stalking her and the ghosts around her start acting erratically ... and it seems to happen right after her Great Aunt passes away... an aunt that she doesn't even remember meeting but her twin brother claims used to babysit them as children. Strange memories start happening as well... of things she doesn't remember happening. She also meets this super hot, but mysterious guy.

This story is sooooo amazing. I love the tie in to Thorne Hill, and all that happens to Anora and Ethan... oh Ethan - yum!!

I don't want to give spoilers but I promise you that you will 100% enjoy this book and the journey!!

I recieved an ARC for my honest review.

A.FLIPPING.MAZING!! Emily Goodwin has once again proven why she is one of my favorite authors!

Anora and Ethan’s story was everything I had hoped it would be and SO MUCH MORE! This story was action-packed; full of demons, ghosts, witches and hunters; and complete with mystery, powers, and love.

Anora blew me away with her confidence and acceptance of herself, her kindness and empathy, her kick buttness, and her overall “weirdness” which just made me love her even more!

And Ethan...this man is one super fine specimen! Not only is he ridiculously sexy, but he’s tough and kicks major butt, he is loyal to a fault, and loves Anora fiercely.

Together Anora and Ethan are a force to be reckoned with! The fit together perfectly. They understand each other on a level that no one else can touch. They are like two puzzle pieces that finally found their other half. Their ability to love each other unconditionally, to be there for one another.

This story was a wild ride full of paranormal excellence! From page one until the very last word I was absolutely enthralled. I never wanted this story to end and I am sitting at the edge of my seat for book 2!

I know I've had a block against paranormal for a cool minute, but HOLY HELL DID I MISS OUT on Emily Goodwin's paranormal books. I can say without a doubt that I'm fully in love with Nightfall, and also completely hooked big time. Nightfall is the story of Anora, who is considered a medium because she can see & talk to ghosts, but as of late, there are demonic bounty hunters after her so there's more to the story that she doesn't know. Anora comes across Ethan who seems to know more about her than she knows about herself, so is he friend or foe? The twists are coming in hot as I'm thrown into this world that the brilliant Emily Goodwin created so I find myself suspicious of everyone and their dog to be honest. The intensity amped up and I found myself on the edge of my seat yelling at my kindle like someone could hear me. So yeah, I'm 100% down with this series, and as I was trying to catch my breath, I found myself already dying for more of Anora & Ethan! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Nightfall by Emily Goodwin is book 1 in the Grim Gate Series and starts the beginning of Anora and Ethan's story. Anora, a medium, can see ghosts which has made her a bit of the "weirdo" pretty much her whole life. Suddenly she has demon bounty hunters after her, she wished she just had ghosts trouble. What began as her being able to see ghosts her whole life has morphed and changed in a blink of an eye. Anora finds out that what she thought she knew was pretty much a lie. As her life explodes around her, she runs into Ethan, a demon hunter. He is this intense, incredible man who pretty much swept Anora off her feet and showed her a new life, showed her what she was missing but he was hiding things. He has secrets and was very ruthless in how he made sure he hid from her. The story is a fast paced, sizzling, intense, dark, angsty, and paranormal romance that will keep you glued from start to finish.

My Rating: 4.5 stars **********

Nightfall by Emily Goodwin is book one in the Grim Gate Serial and tells the beginning of Anora and Ethan's story.
Anora Benson is a special young woman with an upbringing and a past she has no clue about. She's a bit of an oversharing, rambling, a bit annoying being.
Ethan is absolutely not my favorite character, but he makes a remarkable villain. He's cold, cunning, ruthless and Anora is a pawn only. He stays a mystery for a long time.
In the end I think they deserve each other, so lean back and enjoy.
The story has scorching hot scenes, a unique storyline, a pnr read that had me intrigued. I loved the writing and liked how the author draw the characters. The story continues in the next installment.

Oh, my goodness!! I just finished Nightfall by Emily Goodwin!! It is a spin off series of the Thorne Hill series- you don't need to read it, but i definitely recommend it.
Nightfall follows Anora, who is a medium. She can see ghosts. But when demonic bounty hunters start coming after Anora, she had more than a few spirits to worry about. Her whole life may very well be a lie.
Just as Anora's life is unraveling around her, she meets Ethan, who knows even more about her powers then she does. But is it mere chance, or is the timing of their meeting more than just coincidence?
As the demons are closing in, Anora is forced to choose to either trust Ethan or face the demons alone. If she doesn't choose correctly, it could cost her everything.
I seriously loved this book. It takes place in the same world as the Thorne Hill series, with magic and vampires, ghosts and demon hunters.
Anora has always been deemed weird- but seeing and talking to ghosts that others can't see or believe in will do that. Despite it all she didn't let it bother her too much. She tried her best to learn how to deal. But a chance meeting with Ethan make her realize that she isn't so alone and there are scarier things to worry about then a few ghosts.
Ethan is definitely handsome, but also dangerous. And the timing of their chance encounter is more than just coincidence. Anora has to decide if she trusts Ethan, and quick because her life may very well rest on the decision to do so. When her life has been nothing but secrets and lies, who can Anora trust?
I loved going on the journey with Anora in her discovering the truth about herself and in her quest to find answers. I loved the action, adventure and romance throughout this book. I loved Anora & Ethan, and cannot wait to see where the story takes us! 5⭐ out of 5⭐.

Nightfall is just beyond amazing. I think I just found my new addiction. If this is only the first book in this paranormal world. I cannot wait to see where it goes next and watch Anora grow more powerful with each book. Anora has always had the ability to talk to ghosts but once new things come to life she just takes it with ease. I love how everything unfolds with Anora finding out about her powers. Ethan is an amazing demon hunter that you will just love. He is strong and it doesn't phase him at all with what Anora can do. They have this amazing chemistry from the very beginning that just grows. I was glued to my kindle the entire way through. This is one you will not be able to put down as the troubles grow for Anora. I love where Emily Goodwin takes us with this one and I know I'm going to be one clicking this series for more Anora and Ethan to come. I really loved this one so much.

I really enjoyed this novel! I have to admit that there were some elements of the novel that I did not expect and I was pleasantly surprised!!!!! That doesn’t often happen to me while reading, so when it does, I do a little happy dance.

The premise of the novel is a paranormal vibe about a girl named Anora. She sees dead people 👻. But for real, she legitimately sees ghosts and that makes her somewhat of an outcast. It’s never fun growing up and no one believing that you’re having a conversation with a real dead person.

Fast forward a few years and now Anora is in her twenties and still is somewhat of a social outcast but living life. Except she finds out her relative does and leaves her EVERYTHING!! And as soon as she dies, weird things start to happen.

Enter in, criminally sexy Ethan. He doesn’t find Anora socially awkward and finds her just as attractive as she finds him. The chemistry is off the charts between the two.

In this novel we see that everyone wears at least two faces. Some of those faces the author chooses to show us right away. Other times, we don’t get to see at all or only get glimpses of.

The one thing I wished was more elaborated on was I formation about The Order. It was put into play and described but it doesn’t seem as “bad” as they’re making it out to be. I didn’t see any “bad” qualities except them telling them which jobs to do. I equate The Order to The Volturi in Twilight. I need more information.

All in all, this was a great read with a steamy factor of about 4/5. I’d definitely give the second novel in this series a read when it comes out!

I was provided an ARC for a review.

This was my first time reading a book by Emily Goodwin and now that I have I can’t wait to go back and read her other books. Nightfall kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time! Once I read the first chapter of this book I could not put it down! ⁣⁣
🔹⁣⁣⁣⁣
Nightfall is centered around Anora, a medium, who can see ghosts. Growing up with a mom who is a doctor and a dad who studies physics Anora didn’t get any support on the ghost front. Even though she doesn’t have much family support with being a medium, Anora is a strong woman and a force to be reckoned with. You don’t want to miss what happens when Anora starts to discover that she has magical powers. Ethan is a demon hunter and Anora and him have intense chemistry. These two characters really balance each other and fit together so well. I really enjoyed seeing their relationship grow and can’t wait to read more in this world! ⁣⁣

I can not wait to see what the next book holds in this series and how much more Anora grows! ⁣If you love books about paranormals this book is definitely for you. Super excited to see where the next book takes us! ⁣⁣

This book was absolutely amazing it completely blew my mind. Get ready to take another amazing Journey in the paranormal world that Emily knocks out of the park everytime. Ethan and Anoras chemistry was out of this world and I loved all the twists and turns this book has.
Anoras story is all about finding out why she is the way she is and learning about her past. She is a girl who is strong, independent and a kickass. Along the way Ethan comes and basically sweeps her off her feet and shows her another whole life she has been missing. However Ethan has his secrets as well.
From bringing to end you are left wanting more. Your heart pounds and you are taking on this fantastic action pact adventure. Let me just say that cliffhanger will leave you hanging with so many questions that you know Emily is just waiting to answer. Plus you may even see some old familiar faces in this book.

Such a fantastic read you will be left with a smile on your face and an ache for more.

Fabulous start to the Grim Gate series. Anora can see ghosts which has made her ‘weird’ her whole life. Which is a challenge to keep the voices out of her head as she lives her life. Every year for her birthday, her Aunt Esther sends her odd gifts that she never understood. When her aunt dies and leaves her everything she owns, unusual things start to happen. In the craziness she meets Ethan who embraces her oddities as he helps her navigate the demons that are after her. I love how this journey is unfolding. For Anora, what she knows of her life may not be true and we get to experience every twist and turn with her. I’m very excited to see what will happen next. Through all of this, the relationship that is building between Anora and Ethan is amazing as they each just may have found their soulmate. But will all the forces that are against them, let them have a happily ever after? I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

Amazing page turner

Emily has done it again, while in the same world as Thorne Hill, it centres around Anora, a precious professional medium and Ethan a daemon hunter whose job sounds made up.

Anora and Ethan meet by chance and hit it off, but Anora’s life starts to take a stranger turn than it had in the past. She must now decide who she can count on and if it’s better to seek help with the mysterious Ethan or continue on her own as she always has.

Such an amazing page turner than I couldn’t put down. I loved it from start to finish and cannot wait for book 2!

This was a good spinoff from the Thornhill series. I actually discovered the Thornhill series from reading this book. Like others have said; there are quite a few errors in the book that made a couple chapters hard to read. There are also a couple of bland chapters, but hang in there! The ending is definitely worth the read. I still cannot wait to see what Emily Goodwin has in store for us with this series. Will there be more crossovers with the Thornhill series based on this books ending? I cant wait to find out!

Anora is an amazing FMC who I loved getting to know throughout this book, I love the mystery surrounding her and her aunt.
Ethan is just as great and really easy to like.
The plot for this book is brilliant and grabs your attention from the first few pages and keep it till the end, I loved the glimpses of fellow characters from Thornhill and getting to learn more about the Order(if you know you know😉) overall this book a really amazing read and I can't wait to jump on to the next book.
