1.5 stars, and I am NOT rounding this up. So much was wrong with this and I will probably end up editing this review to add stuff I already forgot about.
This was a buddy read with Jess and boy, did we complain a lot.
The author better use my money to get somebody to (properly) edit this book because dammit it needs one (or a better one). I really gave this a shot but it is just... -sigh- The reason I picked this up is because somebody on social media advertised this as "Dean Winchester but dirty AF". Has this person watched SPN or read this book? I don't think so because aside from Dean and Ethan being hunters they have nothing in common. He's not even funny, he's just good looking and buff.
Anora has zero personality, is gullible as hell and basically Bella Swan meets the Sixth Sense but in the worst way (she sees ghosts). Her whole world just comes crashing down at the start of the book when a rando from high school is saying to his friend she's still weird and unbangable after running into her in a club and talking to her for less than 5 minutes. If that's all it takes to demolish somebody's self worth completely then I have no clue how she made it to her twenties.
Everything that's happening in this book makes very little sense. We go to a location, everything that happens there gets skipped over or we get a rushed version and then we go home to yet once again watch her feed her pets. Which is a big thing here apparently because every damn time she's going to leave the house (and that's often) she is feeding her dog and her ferret. We get it. They aren't starving. I am a huge animal lover but at some point I wished her dog, ferret and horse would get offed just so I wouldn’t have to go through all those feedings again.
Soooooo much random and completely boring information gets repeated like we're listening to a broken record:
- She wore the same dress 3 times in one book and she mentions every time she's wearing it a guy once told her she reminded him of his sister.
- Did you know she's a vet tech? Because she's a vet tech. And she can handle some blood. Because of the fact that she's a vet tech, because you know, vet techs can handle a little blood.
- Drinking causes her to lower her mental shields and it keeps it harder to keep the ghosts out. She makes sure everybody and their grandmother know about that, but nobody can know she sees ghosts of course. That would be weird.
- The word cock gets repeated every other sentence during sexy times. It there really only one way to describe "his big beautiful cock"?
I was hoping the romance would save this story but alas. Ethan is her most trusted friend in less than 3 chapters, she's falling in love soon after that and honestly having to read about her peeing right after a sleep inducing sex scene really killed the mood, if there was even one to begin with. The first time they have sex he just goes in bareback and everything because STDs are a thing of the past and nobody can get pregnant accidentally. He doesn't even want to know she's on birth control (she mentions after the deed she's on "some kind of birth control" as if she forgot at the beginning of her sentence what it was) yet he’s jackhammering into her right out of the gate. But they were just so into each other and the moment, you know. Deep stuff.
So much pointless crap was going on and at the same time nothing was going on at all. They go to a location. Take about 5 breaths there, something or nothing happens and then they go home. What was the point?
Every side character is a cardboard stock puppet and the main villain of the story... (I am laughing as I type this but not because it's funny) She is literally thrown in somewhere randomly just to make sure we've heard the name before, never mentioned again and then surpriiiiiiiiiise, IT IS I, YOUR WORST ENEMY!
Jess mentioned the author seemed to have used up all the things she saw on tv and in the movies and just threw them together because name a supernatural being and it's in here: witches, warlocks, vampires, demons, werewolves, ghosts, hunters and some kind of religious order that leads them, Halliwell Manor from Charmed with blue paint and last but not least a magic school.
It's safe to say I will not continue this series and I am so bummed I already bought another book by this author. Considering this book was written after the other one I got I have very very low expectations.
