If you've read anything from Pete Draper before, you can expect to see some familiar faces in this one, even if it takes place in a different part of his world. The story itself lives up to the name of a grimdark novel. The plot is pretty straight forward, which isn't a bad thing. There's a lot of battles, and has a lot of interesting concepts, especially with one character named Zyree.
Overall, a solid read. If you're looking for a easily digested grimdark novel, you don't have to look any longer.
This is the first Grim Dark book I have read, so the genre is very new to me. Warning that it is what it says it is there are so gruesome and gory parts that if you as a reader find disturbing up front say that this is not for you. I am still unsure on my feelings on Grimdark but I persisted. The story is a bit slow to start there is a lot going on and it takes a while to understand events however action does pick up in the second half of the book. It doesn’t leave on a cliffhanger but it leads up to a round ending for a next book.
A grimdark story with compelling characters. Pete fleshed out each of his characters in a magnificent way, even the villains. Through the eyes of Zyree and Darius, you will get to experience all the shades of this unique fantasy world. The fight scenes are amazing and the descriptions are vivid; they will suck you in without you even noticing it.
