What happens when the man of your dreams proves fantasy is better than reality?
Emma
Chase Anderson is everything I want in a man. Tall. Handsome. Compassionate. Confident. He makes me feel things I haven’t in years.
There’s just one problem: me. He can’t stand me and I’m getting to where I can’t stand him either.
The glares stiffen my resolve to forget about my dream man and concentrate on my new job.
Except...eventually those stares turn to something more. More heated. More promising. More everything.
Chase
Emma Carlisle is what I didn’t know I needed in my life until I saw her.
I don’t want her in my life, though. I have too much riding on my shoulders to concentrate on a relationship. A sick mom. A team owner who’s breathing down my neck to win a baseball championship.
It’s easier to ignore her and pretend like she doesn’t exist than to think about how pretty she is or how I feel alive whenever she's around.
But one surprise kiss and I’m left wanting more. One glimpse into what love could be like and I can’t think of anything else.
We have to decide if it’s worth tempting fate and the flames of desire to see what love might be like.
The Changeup is the first book in A.M. Williams Boys of Summer baseball romance series. It’s a workplace, enemies-to-lovers romance that features two perfectionists struggling to come to terms with the curveballs life has for them.
If you love men in tight pants and the sassy women they fall for, this series is for you.
This book was previously published as Coached in Love. It has been updated with new content and re-edited.
A.M. Williams is just a simple girl from the south that found herself living abroad. When she’s not annoying her cat or reading, she’s spending time with her husband and traveling as much as possible. She has a serious case of wanderlust and wants to go as many places as possible while she can. She loves Cheerwine, sweet tea, and North Carolina (eastern style) BBQ as well as those crystal clear waters on the North Carolina coast.
The Changeupis the first book in the new series, Boys of Summer, which revolves around a minor league baseball team. In The Changeup, we meet the head coach, Chase Anderson and the new hospitality employee, Emma Carlisle. At first, there is definite tension, maybe even a little dislike between them. But maybe there is more to their “dislike”, it could be they are both feeling something that they never felt before. Is there a chemistry brewing? Both Chase and Emma need time to figure things out.
The Change up is a fast and easy read. There is some drama, specifically one of my pet peeves, lack of communication, which did irk me. However, Chase is under a lot of pressure and he does makes some mistakes, and Emma has to make a choice. I also loved when they were together because they were really sweet.
It looks like some of the side characters will come into play in book 2, which I am looking forward to getting my hands on.
I received an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review
ARC received from author in exchange for my honest review.
The perfect Summer read!! The Changeup had all the happy feels that I was expecting from a baseball romance!! Add in the sassiness of Emma and the snark of Chase you have the makings for a sexy and fun story!!
Chase Anderson a former baseball player and now current coach has enough on his plate with the upkeeping season as well as taking care of his ailing mother. The last thing he needs is to be attracted to her the first woman who has made him feel anything in years. He works with her though, so avoiding her isn't really an option but all too soon avoiding her is the last thing he wants to do.
Emma Carlisle has the job she has always wanted. A job that combines two of the things she loves most, baseball and hospitality. Having only her best friend Callie and her job to keep her happy, Emma knows she needs to put herself out there, but no one has caught her attention in ages. That is until the seriously sexy head coach brushes her off and she can't seem to get him off her mind.
The Changeup takes a enemies-to-lovers story to the next level by adding in some men in tight pants and their seriously sexy coach. At first, I thought Emma was going to be a pushover but I have never been happier to be proven wrong and Chase, stubborn Chase. He really stepped up in the best way possible because he wasn't perfect and even in the end, he wasn't but he showed up and did the work making the end result freaking adorable!!
This sweet summer read will have you longing for the baseball field and hot summer nights. Beyond excited for book two The Fastball where we will get Callie's story and see if she is able to find one man to keep her interested longer than one night.
4 Star Review The Changeup (Boys of Summer #1) by A.M.Williams
This is book one in the Boys of Summer series and was an enjoyable read. This is head baseball coach Chase Anderson and hospitality manager Emma Carlisle’s story.
From the moment they meet there is tension between Chase and Emma, but is it the kind of tension you want? There’s a fine line between love and hate and as the tension increases it moves to a chemistry that is hard to ignore. Chase is under a lot of pressure , he has a sick mother to look after and a team he needs to ensure the team is at it’s peak and winning and the last thing he needs is to be attracted to Emma.
I was frustrated at times, if only these two would communicate with one another a lot of miss understandings could have been avoided. I really liked that Emma was able to give as good as she got and had no hesitation in standing up for herself. The question is whether she is prepared to take a chance on a relationship with stubborn Chase?
I loved the relationship that Chase has with his ailing mother, the love and support he gives her was heart warming and moved me to tears, you could feel his anguish as he remembers the woman she once was hoping she will improve. When Chase royally mucks it up with Emma his efforts to make it right brought some humour to the story, he really was a tad awkward at times.
I look forward to seeing where A.M. Williams takes us in the next book.
Book one in the new Boys of Summer Series and what a great start to the new series. A.M. Willians is still a fairly new author to me but with each book I pick up I find myself falling for her characters and loving her words and the stories she tells. This is head baseball coach Chase Anderson and the teams hospitality manger Emma Carlisle’s journey. Their journey starts off bumpy to say the least, you can feel the tension in the air whenever they are in the same room but Chase and Emma are feeling a lot more than tension and it’s the chemistry they struggle to ignore. Misunderstandings seem to be the rule for this couple and once you add in Chase’s ailing mother who is suffering from Alzheimer’s you get an emotional read that’s hard to put down. Emma is the girl we all want in our corner, she gives as good as she gets, she doesn’t suffer fools gladly so will she take a chance on Chase or will his stubbornness send her running for the hills. This is a heartfelt story that at times broke my heart, I really found myself feeling the pain and anguish felt by Chase as he remembers the woman his mother once was. But Chase and Emma’s journey also has some humorous moments that lift this book and now I’m excited to see where Ms Williams takes us next with the Boys of Summer.
Chase and Emma's story is a office romance with a bit of enemies to lovers. Chase is the baseball coach. Emma was just hired as the teams hospitality manager. He does not make a very good first impression.
I love Emma & Callie's relationship. I'm looking forward to her story.

This book has it all!!! Prepare to fall in love with A.M. Williams’ newest characters Chase and Emma! Their chemistry is the stuff of really hot, hot legends, and their love happens without either one realizing that those feelings their bodies and hearts experience is called love. Chase, a professional pitcher on the fast track and at the crossroads of entering the major leagues, suffers a career-ending injury which forces his focus from playing to coaching, a transition he makes with absolute elegance considering the cost to him personally. And, although he is a bad boy who has been rude, entitled, arrogant, and selfish when he is around Emma, Chase really is a good man who is loyal and loving to a fault as he faithfully remains by the side of his sick mother, and as he ensures his oldest and dearest mentor, his high school coach, accompanies him all the way to the pros, never leaving him behind. Enter Emma, starting a new job for the professional baseball team as the hospitality manager, is focused on doing a terrific job and showing her boss that she can handle anything that comes her way with grace and professionalism. That is until she and Chase clash and he goes out of his way to snub her until she enters an area he considers his exclusive territory at which point he turns on her in a not so nice way. That gets Emma’s hackles up, but Chase finds angry Emma inordinately attractive, and so it begins. They engage in continuous verbal and physical sparring that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and just when they have it figured out and seem happy and together, Chase screws-up, and then awkwardly tries to fix the mess he made with her. When you read about Chase’s memories and never-ending hope that his mother will recover even a small part of the woman she used to be will break your heart and bring tears to your eyes, while his hysterically funny efforts to make things better with Emma will have you howling on the floor! Ms. Williams knows her craft of how to write an interesting, sexy, and poignant tale that will force you to finish reading until you have absorbed her last words without once putting it down. And, with each new novel I read, Ms. Williams creative and literary skills keep improving. It’s like having a front row seat as a master storyteller is created!
*** This book was originally published in 2019 and titled Coached in Love. The 2021 version has been edited and updated with new content. So I have updated my original review to reflect this new version ***
June 2021 *** 4 1/2 Stars *** The Changeup is the first book in the new Boys of Summer series. The changes that have been made are really good and I liked the story-line better. So get yourself ready to swing and not miss with this one as the story of Emma and Chase is a fun run around the bases........sliding into home plate for the game winning score.
August 2019 *** 3 1/2 Stars *** Coached in Love is the first book that I have read by the A.M. Williams so I was not sure what to expect. But the description looked interesting so I thought I would pick it up as I always love to discover a new author that I can add to my ever growing list. I was not fully impressed with Coached in Love in regards to the actual story-line. But the writing by A.M Williams is very good.
The story of new baseball coach Chase and the teams entertainment director, Emma, was a bit drama filled and frustrating for me. He was a pro player but now turned coach whose ex-girlfriend did him wrong. So he is carrying around all sorts of baggage that really does a number on him and any potential relationship. I think he really just needs to go into a dark cave for a couple of months and work on himself. But I guess that wouldn't really work in a sports romance book. When Chase meets Emma he is immediately attracted to her but he fights it all along the way.
Emma is a strong woman as she does not deal with Chase's baggage and instead uses her backbone to stand up for herself. This I liked a lot as more women need to do this in real life. Emma is attracted to Chase when they first meet so she basically has to coach Chase in how to love someone and allow then to love you back.
The ending was a bit off as there was no HEA but instead what seemed to be a HFN. As this is the first book in a new series I am thinking that we will see the characters and story of Chase and Emma over the next books.

The Change Up is book one from the Boys of Summer Series. This is a baseball, enemies to Insta-love romance. It was previously published as Coahed in Love. It's a quick, easy read focusing on characters Chase and Emma.
This book had potential but didn't hit the mark for me. First there was a lack of plot development. Nothing really happens in this book. There's just a bunch of bickering and a sex scene or two. The story never actually progressed. The characters hung out like twice for a few hours and one of those times there was no talking involved if you catch my drift. Otherwise they have a series of run-ins or exchanges at work that last a few minutes. How in the world can you fall in love while never actually being together.
Secondly, there was a lack in the characters development. Chase was supposedly this easy going guy but was a total douche for no real reason to Emma. Then he would suddenly be syrupy sweet. Emma was supposed to be this independent, sassy, fiery woman but then she would act like a timid doormat. It made no sense and the characters flip flopped so much in their personalities it gives you whiplash.
With the lack of character growth and plot development I didn't feel any real chemistry or fireworks. Their relationship was basically non-existent yet they fell in love. Their excuses for how they acted made no sense. The epilogue doesn't give much info about their relationship progression either. They spend more time apart then together the entire story and most of the time we are just getting their inner dialogue.
Since this was a re-release it was said to have new content and have been re-edited, I didn't read the original version so I can't compare. Some may love this story but it didn't have enough sustenance for me.
The Changeup is the first in this series (Boys of Summer #1) and is a quick sports romance read!
Chase is the head coach of a baseball team/league and Emma is a hospitality worker at the team’s stadium. When these two meet there are sparks!
Both characters are relatable and interesting. Chase is a strong, quiet and an attractive man. He has a detailed backstory that allowed me to connect and understand where he was coming from especially when he was being a jerk at times. He is going through a lot in his personal and professional life. Although I did connect with him, I would have loved to have more context on what happened in his past relationship since the woman is brought up a lot. I think I would have liked this story even more with that perspective.
Emma is the sweet girl-next-door yet she doesn’t take kindly to Chase’s crap – I LOVE that! I wish there would have been a little more development of her character because I really liked her strength and personality. I also found her very relatable and I LOVED her interaction with her best friend, Callie. Callie won the show for me with her funny and honest comments/remarks.
Together, Chase and Emma make a cute couple but their lack of communication with each other makes their relationship difficult. There are other obstacles that are thrown in their way…read the book to find out more! I did enjoy this sweet, quick read. I have always enjoyed sports romance reads and love it when a couple must overcome obstacles to be together. It’s fun to watch them learn and grow! If you are looking for a fun and quick summer read…this book is for you!
The next book in this series sounds interesting! It’s Callie’s book! Wooo!
This is my second novel I’ve read by AM Williams. First and foremost, let me say that I did enjoy this story, however, just wish there was more to it. It’s Book 0.5 in the Boys of Summer Series; all surrounding a team of baseball players. This was, as the title suggests is about the coach.
The coach, Chase, was a pitcher in the big leagues years ago for a few short seasons before retiring due to an injury. That injury left him making the realization that his fiancé and best friend was hooking up behind his back which in case made him stay clear of any type of future relationship.
Emma, a new head director of hospitality for the team, comes in and just wants to do her job. To be honest, Chase is quite a jerk to her and won’t let her ask questions that she needs answers to in order to provide for HIS players.
The two of them don’t start on the right foot. Chase is always apologizing. Finally telling her why he pushes her away once she stands up to him and walks away.
I wanted more from the two of them. They were always fighting or not talking. There was this lack of the relationship that I just didn’t connect to them. I saw the potential. When they were together, there was chemistry there. Wish there was more of that.
I felt like the story just ended. Emma was on a vacation with her best friend and Chase texted her. It was clear that Emma and Chase are working on their relationship but the way they dealt with other obstacles throughout the story, I didn’t feel as though they would be together at the end.
It wasn’t a HEA, but we did get a HFN. I hope that means we see more of them and their relationship in the rest of the series to see if they do in fact end up together.

RECOMMENDED FOR: those that like a simple sports romance with a bit of steam
First my usual points:
- I do not do spoilers unless warned. - Read the summary above; it will tell you what the book is about. I will not reiterate. - This is a standalone but part of a series. I suspect it’s best enjoyed in order but (suspect) it is not necessary. - No errors that I caught as far as editing. - The author was new to me (and I’m looking up others by her)
BOOK: - Contemporary work romance - 1st person with dual POV Other characters from the series: -- other characters from the series make appearances with slight involvement of a supporting, move the story along sort -- main characters’ story is concluded
Star Ratings - 1 (poor) - 5(READ THIS BOOK) · Writing Quality: 5 stars with just enough detail · Story ingredient: 5 stars · Ease of reading/Pace: 5 stars, hooked from page one, easy flow to the read · Plot strength: 5 stars as a fun easy to read romance · Steam Level: 3-4 stars; romance but not explicit
Notes/Opinion (personal): This was a new author and a new series to me. It was what I would classify as a great summer read, not overly complicated, great characters that are able to get out of their own way and get the HEA without much drama. I enjoyed Chase and Emma's push/pull relationship and the realistic character portrayal, with just enough angst to show faults.
This is a prequel of sorts to the series. It is book 0.5. It is new to me as well as this author. This is a quick read and well as easy. Some, sports, and lust, with some passion and good friends. I read it in one go and it kept me along for the ride.
I liked the overall concept of the book. The people were likable and I think I could get along with them as well. You get some baseball and you get some backstory on Chase. Chase had his dreams cut short by injury and he became a coach and a good one at that
Emma is new to the team as a coordinator and she is trying to make everything run smoothly. When they meet sparks fly but denial is their friend. When Chase realizes he has feelings for Emma he tends to shut down and cut her off. I loved Emma's no-nonsense attitude. She didn't tolerate anything from Chase. She was a really strong and independent woman.
As I said previously I liked the book, but in all honesty, it ended very abruptly. I felt something was lacking. I was expecting more. Then when there is an extended epilogue you get a bit more but I wasn't satisfied. I felt like something was missing. I totally would have given it a higher rating if there was a more complete ending. Maybe the author will continue with these two so I can find out. I will read more int he series because as I said I did like this read.
More an exercise in frustration than an actual romance novel, Coached in Love may work as the introduction to a new series, but it does not work as a love story. This novella follows Chase, a pro baseball player turned coach who finds himself attracted to the team’s new hospitality manager, Emma. His ex did a number on him and Emma reminds him of her, so Chase tries to push her away. When they run into each other outside of work and the drinks are flowing, they finally have a real conversation and feel a connection. Insecurities hold them both back, and plenty of indecision follows.
Initially, I was really enjoying this novella. I love a good sports romance and the writing style is solid. Unfortunately, both characters make mistake after mistake. This honestly would’ve worked better if it was an example of how NOT to start a relationship and the next book would be their second chance romance - because they did not spend enough time together to make up for all of the drama. I suppose technically there’s a HFN at the end, but we only see the struggle, not the resolution.

Chase was a professional baseball player until an injury took him out of the game, and now he's a Coach these days. However, his fiance did a number on him when he couldn't play anymore, which has made him kind of a douche when it comes to relationships so he tends to stay away from them, until Emma came to work for the team. She's a smart, beautiful, take no nonsense kind of woman that had him really acting the fool towards her as he had an instant attraction to her that he didn't know what to do with. Emma also had that same attraction to Chase, but after being treated like crap by him, she didn't want any part of him, until the night she drank too much, and their chemistry wouldn't be denied. They hook up, light the sheets on fire, and she trips out the next morning which had her running out of his place like her pants were still on fire. Obviously that causes some more drama between them, as Emma is doing her best to avoid him, to which Chase goes back to his usual douchey self. Do they ever work it out?! You'll have to one click Coached in Love to find out! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This is book number 1 of the Boys of Summer series and focuses on Chase and Emma. Chase is the head coach and Emma is the hospitality manager. Chase is a former professional player who moved into a coaching position after a career ending injury. On top of the injury he was dealing with his sick mom and discovered his ex cheating on him. He had walls for days built up. This leads him to act like a jerk to Emma on the regular when she is just trying to do her job. Once they do begin a relationship lack of communication and him being a jerk to her because he hasn't dealt with the past definitely hurt their relationship. I usually really love A.M. Williams' stories but this one just didn't hit the mark for me. It wasn't a bad story, I just couldn't connect to it and fully get into it like the others I have read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Can I say how much I loved Emma and Chase?! I love that Emma didn't give 2 *things* about standing up to Chase. Yes, she thought Chase was attractive but she was NOT going to put up with him being rude to her. Or ignoring her. And I love her for that. Yes, she might be attracted to him but she was still going to call him on the carpet as she needed to. And apparently, Chase seemed to be a fan, not that he was telling Emma that.
Emma and Chase are great together, even if they aren't really being secretive about their relationship, at least everyone around them didn't think so.
I felt for Chase because my dad had Alzheimer's and had progressively gotten worse. He probably would have been in assisted living if he hadn't have died last year. So I feel for what Chase was having to deal with and live with and trying to keep things scheduled and how their memories, both good and bad, can be hurtful reminders.
"He couldn't let himself become distracted. And that's exactly what she was: a distraction."
Chase Anderson lives and breathes baseball. Coach of the Somerville Spartans, he's focused on winning. He's not remotely looking for a relationship or love, since he's been burnt in the past.
Emma Carlisle has just started a new job with the baseball team. She has some great ideas to improve things, however, she never expected the surliness of the team's head coach. One drunken night puts them in a completely different ballpark - one where neither seems to know the rules of the game.
This was a quick and fairly enjoyable read. The attraction between Chase and Emma was instant but the back and forth between them was kinda exhausting. Unfortunately, both were riddled with fear and insecurities. Chase was one grumpy SOB and I was glad that Emma stood her ground and didn't put up with his nonsense. There was definitely heat and desire between them but they spent a lot of the story in doubt and aggravation, which I found almost unnecessary. I love sports romances so I will look forward to reading the next book.
"This is a great start to the Boys Of Summer series. It doesn't feature on of the players, but it is about the head coach Chase and the teams head of hospitality Emma. Chase is quite the jerk to Emma at the beginning, and there are parts throughout this novella that had me shaking my head about him. But deep down he is a great guy and is lucky to have found Emma, he just needs to work through his past. I really enjoyed AM Williams writing style and I would definitely love to keep reading the subsequent books yet to be released. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book." ~Sharon
I have a feeling I am really going to enjoy this series. To start off with the a**hole of the group always bodes well for the future. Enjoyed how Emma didn't back down and how Chase finally realized what was important. ~Jen
The life that Chase planned takes a detour when an injury ends his dreams of playing professionally. He now finds himself trying to balance the demands of coaching a team with the responsibilities of his family so he doesn’t need any further distractions in the form of his sweet and sassy co-worker.
Emma is excited about the opportunity to work for the team, and she is determined to succeed. The last thing she needs is to be attracted to her sexy yet cranky co-worker who irritates her like no one else. Every time they are together the sparks of antagonism fly, but will they realize what their true feelings are for each other before it is too late?
Heat, humor and all the feels as Emma is exactly who Chase needs in his life. She is willing to support him with whatever obstacles life throw at them, but she also isn’t about to just accept his bad behavior.
What a great start to a new series combing my favorite sport of baseball with hot men! Williams does a really good job of describing the dedication it takes to not only be a baseball player but a coach as well. While reading it was just like you were there. Of course there must be a love interest and Emma fits that to a T. Chase has his moments. He was burned in the love department and while attracted to Emma, he didn’t want to be and she didn’t either. Lack of communication on both sides led to some angst for them, but in the end...well if you want to find out about that, you will have to get yourself a copy of this novella! Let the games begin!

First book I have read from this author and it was enjoyable from beginning to end. Emma is starting a new job as the hospitality manager for the baseball team. A position a girl usually does not have. Not only is this a position a girl normally doesn't have but she is up against a coach that is a complete butthead. Chase Anderson is someone that should be punched. When he first meets Emma he is a complete butthead. He is hateful and mean to her. There is no reason for him to act the way that he does. But moving on further through the storyline Emma gives him a chance. But will it be worth it or will Chase end up hurting her even more? I did enjoy this one. Hated Chase but did give him a chance to make things better. I enjoyed reading this one and want to read more from this series.
The story about Chase and Emma. They meet at the baseball club where they both work, Chase as head coach and Emma just started as hospitality manager. The attraction is there immediately, but Chase’s grumpy behavior gives them a rough start. Chase has a lot of baggage: girlfriend who ran off with best friend after getting injured and was told never to play high-level baseball again. It almost messes up the relationship and chance to be happy, but hé comes to his senses anyway . A well written book, nicely developed characters, but I found the content a bit boring. In my opinion, not much happened, and it was also a slow start.

This was a great start to this new series and sometimes you can't beat a bit of enemies to lovers type read and this book satisfies the need. I really liked both Chase and Emma they are forces to be reckoned with which makes them a perfect match and gives you plenty of laughs especially with how they set each other off when near each other not only with snark and rudeness but also the heat that they slowly begin to notice the more time they are together. There are some good laughs, sweet times, frustrations and hurt feelings as we see this couple slowly go from hate to love and leaves you wanting the next book!

I have read a few of this authors books and they have been good but this one has a hot baseball player turned coach vs. his snarky, sassy co-worker. While parts of it were slow & most of the heat implied, that doesn't stop the witty banter that will hook you till the very last page. While I wasn't totally happy with a HFN ending and not a HEA, I figure readers will get more from the bonus scene and as more books from the series are available. Would recommend The Changeup and I for one can't wait to read Callie's story next. Even though I did receive an advanced review copy of this book, I am voluntarily leaving my own unsolicited, voluntary opinion with this review.
Good but …. 3.5 Good romance, well written, hot, but I found it that often the heroes argue a lot with their friends to question themselves, which does not necessarily put them in value, or else belittles their character a little because they seem to always need someone to assist them in their thinking. Chase, a baseball coach, struggles to figure out what he wants with a new employee, Emma, and he goes back and forth with her heart, as the latter is magnetically drawn to him, but she doesn't want to be someone he can use whan he wants to. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
They hate each other, but they get past that soon enough. Chase is frustrating, not dealing well with the stress of his job. He really is a great son, dealing with his mother and her Alzheimer's. Emma is hardworking, and fortunate to do what she loves - hospitality - and combine that to work surrounded by her other love - baseball. The banter between them was amusing, sometimes lol funny. I loved the book, but I'm a sucker for a hot baseball romance. They have a bumpy road to their romance, and groveling will be involved. I'm looking forward to Callie's story next...
