Mob boss Gael Pierce has recently taken over the territory of Xavier Trabeaux, better known as Mr. X. While cataloging his acquisitions, Gael stumbles upon a gem he didn’t expect—Silhouette, the headliner for a burlesque club who gives even better performances in the back rooms. There’s just one catch: he is completely untouchable, and Gael vows to get to the bottom of why and how he might change that.
An M/M romance short story originally included in the Taking a Chance: Charity Anthology.

Uhm, I have no idea how to rate this.🤣 I think 3.5⭐️ because Silhouette by Amanda Meuwissen is the kind of story that makes you go, “Wait, what is this?” but in a slightly delighted, slightly devastated way. It’s only 53 pages, but it packs enough charm and rhythm to make you wish it had at least a hundred more.
Let’s start with the audio, because honestly, that’s where this story truly shines. Kevin Earlywine doesn’t just narrate it, Earlywine sings and good grief, do they sing!!! Their voice gives the story this magnetic pulse, it felt like a live gig you stumbled into by accident. The lyrics, written by Meuwissen, are a delight: clever, cheeky, and layered with double meanings that make you grin even as your heart does a little flip.
Now, story-wise... well, yes, it’s short. The relationship development feels very shallow. The plot flirts with you and then ghosts you, and you can’t even be mad about it because the vibe is that good.
I was warned it was a short story, and I adjusted expectations accordingly, but still, I couldn’t help wanting more. More banter, more emotional payoff, more of whatever magic Meuwissen was spinning. The writing itself was fun, refreshingly out of the box. It’s got that spontaneous spark that makes you grin at your headphones like an idiot on public transport.
So yes, 3.5 stars, but not enough to round up. It’s short, but it’s got soul, swagger, and a soundtrack I’d happily keep on repeat.
Silhouette is a good mystery that captivates you from page one. Burlesque being a personal favorite topic of mine, I was more than onboard this story from the get-go.
There’s a lot that I really liked and enjoyed in this story. The very first song that Nicky performs, for example, I thought was brilliant. The double meaning in the sense that it fit Nicky’s state of mind and was chosen for the song’s specific message.
Another thing I really enjoyed was the mystery. I was super invested in finding out what Nicky’s role was, why, and how it came to be that way. Which in turn made me really curious as to where the narrative was going with the antagonist Mr. X who seems to be a menacing puzzle just lurking outside the words on the page as if he’ll jump in at any moment without notice. I loved the suspense of waiting for the other shoe to drop.
The erotica was also very well written (definitely one of the best parts in the story lol) and I’m sure Amanda’s readers will enjoy it. I’d give it a 10/10. Personally, though, I would’ve loved more burlesque routines, but that’s just me and beggars can’t be choosers lol.
The characters were solid. Amanda has a great way of just bringing them to life and it’s always a pleasure to experience. I was genuinely intrigued by the side characters like Gael’s sister and Nicky’s coworkers who, while they didn’t have a lot of page time, made me want to read all types of side stories about them because there’s so much potential for interesting occurrences in and out of a burlesque workplace.
The only negative thing I could say about the story is that the villain Mr. X felt a bit anticlimactic. Possibly because my brain ran off with what the mystery could be. But his motives for keeping Nicky and treating him the way he does didn’t make the most sense to me. It was just a little bit underwhelming. While it works, Mr. X just doesn’t feel that strong to me based on the buildup and tension surrounding him. In my humble opinion, that would be the only thing I would say could be improved because it would help the story flow better by fleshing out Nicky’s trauma, giving the reader a real sense of dread when it comes to Mr. X, and it would keep up very nicely with the tension the mystery already builds up so well throughout the story.
That point aside, Mr. X’s motive doesn’t really take anything away from the story even now. It’s good as is. And I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a quick, fun, racy, read.
I’m always snapping up audios and hoping for the best. I’d encountered Amanda Meuwissen’s name a couple of times and so was intrigued to grab this book. I wasn’t disappointed.
Gael is a mob boss – not my favorite type of hero. But he’s also gay and takes care of his people, so that – to a certain extent – redeems him. Silhouette is a burlesque performer who also does more interesting private shows. Where he exposes more of himself.
The boss is fascinated by his new employee, but he wants to know more about the man. Turns out he’s been being taken advantage of for years by the man Gael’s replacing. A man he very much wants to hunt down. And he thinks Silhouette might just hold the key to the other man’s location.
Silhouette is fascinated by his new boss. A man who isn’t out to get everything he can. A man who isn’t going to keep him like an indentured employee with no free will. Gael offers him freedom. It’s an overwhelming offer, but one he slowly begins to embrace.
Then evil forces nearly drive them apart. But I got my happy ending, so I was thrilled.
Here’s where I move on to talking about the audio itself. Holy crap! There’s an original song. And, wow, it’s a catchy tune. And Kevin Earlywine’s performance of the song stuck with me. I found myself humming it later in the week. I loved it.
So you have to snag this audio however you can. I loved it and am so glad I got the chance to listen.
Another wonderful short story by Amanda Meuwissen. I just love her style of creating a dense atmospere with a lot of suspense, heat and beautiful characters. Here we can enjoy the young beautiful dancer Silhouette, but once you thought you know him you will be surprised by the author's talent to let her characters blossom with very different facettes of their lives. It is a very inspiring quick read, as I am used to find the author's books, powerful and captivating. With a straight forward writing style, she lets her readers dive into the world of her characters easily, and every one of them has multiple sides to discover. I really loved this booklet a lot, but as usual I wished it was a little bit longer as I for mysef can fall in love with the characters so easily that I want it to continue. A full 5 stars without hesitation from me. I received this book for free but leave a review freely and voluntarily because I really enjoyed reading it.
I think what I loved most about this story is the complexity of the characters. A mob boss with a clear understanding of the dynamics of consent and a respect for the autonomy of the people who work for him. A burlesque dancer who loves his art and keeps his sense of self even under horrifying circumstances. Gael and Nicky treat each other with such gentleness, and see each other so clearly, that every step of their relationship packs an emotional punch. It’s also super hot, of course, and there’s drama, danger, and justice as well as something that looks a lot like love. Beautifully written, with great atmosphere.
*An ARC of this story was provided by the author and I have chosen to publish a fair & honest review.*
I enjoyed this short listen and the gentle way Gael helped Silhouette come out of his shell after the horrific grooming he experienced at the hands of Mr. X. The climax is dramatic and a bit violent (Mr. X is a mob boss after all), but the ending is satisfactory. Part of the story includes Silhouette singing, and I have to say I didn't care for the way it was inserted into the story. That's just me. YMMV. Overall, a good listen.

Nice quick short story that offers a good well-rounded story. The narration was great too. Love when a narrator offers us their singing voice to give a little extra to the story. The bonus allowing us to hear the song end-to-end, without disruptions. I did enjoy the insta-love between the main characters and enjoyed this story.
Entertaining story from new to me author. I finished the entire story in one sitting. I liked both characters Gael and Nicky, author was able to show their relationship start and bond develop through dance and attraction. I listened to audiobook and liked narrator's voice and singing. Overall this was enjoyable listening experience.
It's everything about the words and how they create the *feeling* of the environment. It's impossible not to feel immersed. I am always impressed with their stories. Gael and Nicky were perfect.
My third try at Amanda Meuwissen, and clearly her writing and her storytelling are not for me. There’s something about how she writes that rubs me the wrong way, and I almost find it off putting
Gael is a mob boss unlike any other and Silhouette, who I want to hug everyday, whirled his way into my heart. I wasn’t sure what to expect but what I discovered was a treasure rich in beauty, tenderness, heart and passion. I wish it were longer as I want to know more about these amazing men who left me breathless.
“Silhouette” is an enjoyable short story about a young man overcoming being emotionally terrorized and physically abused and coming into his own. After Gael Pierce overthrows the mob boss of the territory, he acquires several businesses, including a burlesque theater. When his sister encourages him to come see the headliner, he does and is instantly entranced by the performer. However, when he meets Nicky, he’s taken aback by the shy, frightened young man, and infuriated when he learns that Mr. X had basically been keeping Nicky hostage, isolated and terrified for five years. While attracted to Nicky, Gael wants to earn his trust more. As Nicky begins to trust in his new freedom, he opens up to his fellow dancers, takes classes and blossoms into an outgoing person, and soon wants Gael to do more than watch him perform—he wants to be touched by him.
“Silhouette” is a solid getting together story that does just enough to flesh out the characters. Nicky has been kept by Mr. X since he was 19 yo, so he doesn’t know himself much and is just learning himself by the end of the story. Gael, is a more business-style mob boss—mostly considered a mob boss because he “theoretically” has some not so legal businesses. He’s very much a loyalty over fear leader, and only kills if necessary. Most of their activities/dating as well as Nicky connecting with others is off page and told rather than shown, and what is shown always happens in the club so this limits the characters’ depth and development a bit.
The narration is fine; unfortunately, the singing is better than the reading. I’m unfamiliar with Kevin Earlywine’s work so don’t know if this is his first time narrating professionally but it feels like it—the character voices are ok but don’t differ much from his exposition voice and some of the emotionality from scenes doesn’t fit or is missing. From a production standpoint, the cuts between performing the song and narrating are very jarring and could have done with a smoother transition, having the song playing softly underneath the reading as well would have helped maintain the club atmosphere since the song was such a large a part of the scene. However, his general delivery and overall performance indicates that with practice and time he can be a really solid narrator.
I’m reviewing the audio version. This is the first I’ve listened to/read by this author. It is a short story and after fighting my way through it I wished it was much longer. My complaint is with Authors Direct. This is the worse app I’ve used for audio. I could not access the book on my Samsung phone. I sent an email trying to fix it and ended up days and days going back and forth repeating the same thing over and over again and never did get any help there. The app somewhat works on my tablet. The problem is it keeps stopping. But at least I finally heard the whole thing. The story is impressive. The author has managed to make a short story complete. Usually there are so many unanswered questions in short stories or they are really a lead into or middle of a series. I liked both of the mc’s. Gael, I feel, is more of a business man that what I expect a mob boss to be. His willing to be honest and fair with Nicky showing how human he is. His attraction to Nicky and his treatment of Nicky impressed me. Nicky is so innocent in some ways and yet so knowledgeable in others. He knows how to use his talents and also is smart enough to acknowledge that he wants more. I really enjoyed the song and feel the voice of Kevin Earlywine added immensely to the story. I plan on checking out more of his work.
New to me, author Amanda, and relatively new to me narrator. So I wasn't sure what to expect.
The story is about a young male burlesque dancer and the mob boss. At first, I struggled to get into the book, and it may have been Authors Direct app, as my phone kept dropping the book and saying it couldn't find it. So I finally downloaded the book to the phone, and it played much easier. This is very short audio, but she packed everything into the 1 hour and 20 mins, so I enjoyed the story in the end.
I've listened to another book narrated by Kevin Earlywine, so I wasn't expecting him to sing through it. However, it was a pleasure to listen to. Clean and concise. I speed this narration up to 1.25 on Authors Direct, which is usual for me.

I received this audiobook for free from GRR at my request. My review is my opinion and an honest review - neither the author nor GRR influenced my opinion.
Not every author of excellent novels can make the successful transition to the short story form. Lucky for us, Amanda Meuwissen is able to make the transition beautifully. I listened to the audio of this story with an excellent performance by Kevin Earlywine who brought these characters to life beautifully. This is a mafia romance, but the focus is on the characters and their relationship, not the mob. Gael has succeeded in taking over territory from another boss and as part of that he meets Nicky and is immediately drawn to him. Both these men have reasons not to get involved, but they do. The author uses the short space available to clearly show us their past and what made them into people they are now in such vivid detail that the relationship is totally believable. Don't miss Meuwissen's longer works, but we can also hope there are more short stories in the future. I also recommend checking out other performances by Kevin Earlywine. His high calibre of work here is standard for him.
I enjoyed the short story and wished the story had been a little longer. Silhouette is the main character of a burlesque club, but his life is ruled by someone else. A gangster, Mister X, who doesn't allow anyone to get close to Silhouette. But then Gael takes over Mister X's territory and he slowly tries to bring Silhouette out of his shell. The story is entertaining, enjoyable and it gets really exciting at the end. I liked Silhouette from the beginning and would have liked to know more about him.
I have never listened to an audio book where the narrator sang. Kevin Earlywine sang the song You're Evil really well, and that made this audiobook special. And in general, he did a really good job bringing the story to life. He has a pleasant voice that is easy to listen to.
I received a free copy of the audio and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
For a very short story I enjoyed this. The characters were great and the couple had great chemistry together. It was sweet and sexy with some mystery drama and slight suspense. I definitely was into the story from start to finish. Leaving off a star because I enjoyed this couple and storyline so much it would have been wonderful to get a full length more in depth story but it was definitely a great listen. This was a new to me author and I would definitely read more from them.
The narrator did a fantastic job. He had a pleasant reading voice and expressed all the emotions and brought the story to life. He did different voices for each of the characters that suited them IMO. There is alot of singing parts thrown in throughout the story and the narrator did a great job. Was it amazing, perhaps not but not too many narrators have to sing so I got to give him credit for doing it and doing it well.
I listed to the audio version and while I loved the narration the story was pretty lacking for me. This story seemed more like it was just small parts taken out of a longer story and not a stand alone novella. I love novellas and read them a lot do it’s not just that it’s a short story. The story seemed disjointed and lacked enough details to make it feel like a whole story. I do think this could make a compelling 150-200 page book but as a novella it did not work for me. Also it was supposed to be a bit if a mystery but it was very predictable. I wouldn’t classify this as a mystery myself. If you want a semi-steamy quick read this might be good for you. If you’re looking for a well built story I would skip this one.
I did receive a free ARC of this book but that did not influence my review.
I listened to the audiobook rented from my local library. This is a short book, maybe a novella length? A gay mob boss has just overtaken a boss whose territory included a burlesque club. The headline dancer, a young man who dances in a corset & fishnets was the property of the prior boss. Though he was not raped, he was violated in other ways such as verbal abuse, inequal pay, and that no one else was ever allowed to touch him, not even hugs from friends.
The new boss works to rescind the fears instilled by his predecessor in a somewhat unbelievable kind, benevolent manner. Through private shows and time spent together without pushing boundaries, the young dancer begins to heal and trust. Despite a reappearance of the old boss, they forge a future together that is bright and full of promise.
I don’t think I’ve ever listened to an audiobook that had actual singing in it – as opposed to the narrator more like reading the words in a sing-songy voice. Listening to Kevin Earlywine perform the song You’re Evil made this audiobook so special. The short story by Amanda Meusissen was also really good. I’m not usually a big fan of mafia type stories but this one was sensual and a joy to listen to. I can see myself listening to this more than once.
A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.
Though Gael and Nicky's story was short, it struck a nice balance of intrigue, steam, and romance. The air of mystery surrounding Silhouette was very compelling, and I loved listening to bits and pieces of the truth come out as this story progressed. I think the author made some smart choices with the timeline of the chapters to make Gael and Nicky's relationship believable, and I'm impressed by how talented the narrator for the audio was. The romantic developments were highly satisfying, and even the Mr. X suspense plotline was fully resolved. Of course I wanted to see more of Nicky and Gael's relationship, but for a short story it was packed full of all the things I love!
**I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
A very sweet, sexy and emotional story! When Gael walks in the club previously owned by Mr. X, he is completely enthralled by a dancer/singer named Silhouette. He’s beautiful and alluring, but also mysterious. Gael is informed that everyone looks but no one can touch the stunning young man. Nicky liked working at the club, but it wasn’t his choice. With nowhere else to go, Mr. X took him in and out him to work, keeping him on a tight leash. Gael starts out wanting to make things right for Nicky, and progresses to wanting to make him his. I listened to this on Author’s Direct, provided by Gay Romance Reviews. Kevin Earlywine did an amazing job of portraying the characters, there’s even songs and music!
Silhouette is an enjoyable short story about Gael, a mob boss, and Nicky, a dancer named Silhouette. Gael has taken over Mr. X's territory. Nicky was kept and groomed by Mr. X and no was to touch him. I love when Nicky finally realized he wasn't being controlled anymore, that he could do things like go out with the other dancers. I love Gael and Nicky's connection. Nicky is the sweetest and deserves to be treated as such. I would enjoy more from this world. I recommend this book. Narrator Kevin Earlywine does a fabulous job. I really enjoyed his singing during the book. What a surprising treat. Kevin has a wonderful voice. I even started the book over after I finished and listened to it again.
I received an audiobook ARC of this book, at my request. My voluntary review includes opinions about the story by Amanda Meuwissen and the voice performance of Kevin Earlywine.
The length of the story really lends itself to preventing the mafia storyline from getting dark. Abusive behaviors from the past are discussed, but not belabored. The reader is privy to abuse victim Silhouette’s opening up under Gael’s empowering patience. If a story with a mafia plot line can be called sweet, this is the one. It’s an enjoyable read with a satisfying ending.
There’s a song at the beginning. I didn’t like how it was integrated into the story.
Kevin Earlywine’s performance as narrator is terrific. He has a wonderful emotional depth, even for such a micro-sized story.
This review is for the audiobook. Narration 5 Stars, Story 4 Stars. I really enjoyed both characters. Poor Nicky has been trapped and controlled by Mr. X for so long he has no life. Gael, unknowingly at first, rescues him. Their relationship blossoms on earned trust and support. I will state I was not a fan of the broken up song in the narration, it felt like the song's intent was lost. I also think that as a mob boss Gael would have considered Mr. X's obsession with Nicky, and kept protection on the club and his home. For that I knocked off a star. Overall a well written enjoyable novella.
a quick lovely story about a young man who had been abused by the last mob boss of the area and has now caught the attentions of the new one. it's about him coming into himself and falling for his new boss. There wasn't a lot of substance, its not really meant to and yet it's very much just about him learning he's safe and wanted in a way that isn't toxic. I really liked that he saved himself.
I kinda hated the opening scene in the audio, there was a song sung and it was very choppy because it went from the song and broke with the narration however the song as itself at the end was a wonderful edition. however the rest of the narration was great.
Amanda did a great job at packing a lot in in a short story. A mob takeover brings mob boss Gael to a new property he has acquired - a male strip club. There he witnesses the performance of the club’s main attraction, the mysterious Silhouette. There’s suspense, romance, healing, revenge, steam. Gael is a sort of white Knight to Nicky. Yes he’s a mob boss, so he’s not an innocent, but he saves Nicky in a lot of ways. I’m very happy with how the ending confrontation went. Nicky deserved that. Definitely worth the read.
Kevin Earlywine is not my favorite narrator. His inflections are…an interesting choice. It didn’t totally take away from the story though.
Audio review : This is the story of Gael and Nicky. The narrator Kevin Earlywine made the story feel more real to me and I would listen to him again. Personally I would have loved it if the story was longer. For such a short story the author did a magnificent job. The suspense and mystery kept you riveted. I loved Nicky and Gael. Definitely recommended.
I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it.
