The Everly Club #2

Falling for the Baron

Rate this book
She must marry. But she’ll do it her way. And she has a plan...

Caroline Whitfield has it all figured out. Since all young ladies of the ton must marry, she plans to do just that. The only romances she’s interested in are between the pages of her beloved books, so love is not a consideration. She needs a husband willing to let her live her own life, and who better than a man for whom a wife is an inconvenience packed off to the country? Which means only one type of man will do...

She needs a rake, a man who will barely notice his own wife in favour of his own pursuits. It’s the perfect plan. All she has to do is not fall in love... And most definitely not with the irritatingly handsome Baron Huntingford.

He needs a wife. Preferably someone who is not Miss Whitfield...

More at home on the battlefield than in a ballroom, Aaron, Baron Huntingford, is still getting used to his title and being a man of leisure rather than a soldier. A rake with a dangerous reputation, he’s used to any woman he wants falling at his feet, but Miss Whitfield is not like other debutantes.

For one thing, she seems to actively dislike him. For another, she’s his best friend’s new sister-in-law, and, therefore, off limits. Never mind that he craves her touch and to find out if her lips taste as sweet as they look.

But when he finds out about her scheme to bring a rake to the altar, all bets are off. If she wants a rake, she’ll get one. Him.

Caroline Whitfield and Lizzie Harcourt are best friends and on the lookout for husbands, but not just any old husband. They have decided that marrying Rakes will give them both the freedom to pursue their individual passions in peace once they have met their requisite martial obligations of an heir and a spare that is. Caroline loves to indulge her passion for reading, reading all the books she can get her hands on especially the more salacious and scandalous ones and Lizzie to her love of all things horticultural and plant like.  However their discussion during the Countess of Beauvale's ball is overheard by other debutantes who rush to spread the delicious gossip that two debutantes seek to bring two renowned Rakes off their list up to scratch.  Soon both households are inundated with Rakes, fortune hunters and flowers galore. Much to the consternation of Aaron, Baron of Huntingford.

Aaron is a renowned Rake and war hero who succeeded to his title when his older brother fell to his death during a drunken horse ride. He dislikes society occassions, but has resigned himself to the fact that he must marry and intends to make a list of all the suitable fairly pretty, mildly intelligent and biddable debutantes of the season from which to select his bride to appease both his mother and the demands of his title. However he does not wish for a love match, such as the one his good friend Luke, Viscount Thornton has acquired with his equally besotted and adoring wife Sophia. Both of which are unashamedly in love and more than willing to indulge in public displays of affection for all the Ton to see.

Having overheard the gossip and paying it no heed at the time, Aaron is outraged when he finally figures out that the two debutantes in question are none other than Caroline and her friend Lizzie.  Aaron is so outraged that he decides to show Caroline that Rakes are not the best husband material by going through her list of Rakes one by one whilst waltzing with her at Lady Brooks's ball, to the extent that he dissuades her of some of the Rakes on her list and ultimately waltzes her straight off the dance floor and into a secluded corridor where he pins her against a wall and proceeds to kiss her senseless. Declaring that if she wants a Rake then she can have him.

Neither Caroline or Aaron can dismiss their kiss from their minds, as Aaron becomes Caroline's constant shadow heading off suitable partners with a subtle glower without setting off the gossips. Caroline wonders if their kiss means as much to him as it does to her. As he is all she could think of whether he is near or not culminating in another breathtaking kiss in an empty box whilst attending the opera with Luke and Sophia.

However the appearance of Colonel James Melton a gentleman who served under Wellington who is both despised by all those who served under him and Aaron himself soon starts to cause friction and contention as James Melton hates Aaron with a passion and will do whatever it takes to destroy him even if it means a duel to the death.

Will Aaron and Caroline realise that they are more than just attracted to each other and that the Rake she desires is the one that holds her heart and will Aaron put aside his ideas of marrying a biddable wife for the intelligent argumentative woman who he desires above all others instead.

Will a rake husband allow his wife to pursue he own interests without interference.

This is my first book by Anya Cade and it is a wonderful read. It is very well written with and intriguing and thoughtful plot. The characters are well developed, engaging and exhibit great period dialog. Ms. Cade is an excellent wordsmith and based on this book, her “Every Club” series should not be over looked. I have just purchased the initial book in the series and await the third to be published,
Lady Caroline Whitfield understands that she must wed, but she wants to marry on her own terms. She and her friend have a plan to each marry a “Rake” who after the wedding will ignore them (except for producing an heir) and allow them to pursue their own interests as he continues his rakish ways. They would not fall in love with their husbands and just live their lives out of the spotlight.
After retiring from the King’s army, Aaron, Baron Huntingford, a notorious rake, is in need of a wife. He is introduced to Lady Caroline by his friend’s wife and is intrigued by her. He soon learns of Caroline’s plan and as he has become besotted with her, he and are afraid to tell each other. With some entertaining upsets and mistakes they end with an HEA.

This is the second book in a delightful new series "The Everly Club". All the books are about the gentleman who are the founders of the club or part owner. The club is Elite and members need to be recommended by a member. There is a special room called "The Green Room " for men with special tastes. Each is a Rake in his own right, and most are titled also. Some are war hero's and each story is about the Ladies who catches each of the fellow's eye for different reasons. These are short stories but all have a great plot, drama, secrets, lots of spice and steamy scenes perfect for rakes and the women who may tame them.
All the books are set at the same time and events that happen at a ball. For that reason, it is best to read them in order as the same characters are in all the books. I read them out of order and still found them a great read.
Each book has its own problem between the rake and his lady and mystery to solve. You will like some of the Rakes more than other and same with the young women, but in the end, each will win you over. As these are short stories, I hate to give anything away as it is so much better to find out the hidden secrets on your own.... I do hope you get this series and get started. Books 1-3 our out now and book four will be later this year.. I can't wait to see what happens in it..

This is the second book of this series but you do not have to read the first to read this one.

Baron Aaron Huntingdon is bothered by his friend's sister-in-law and debutante, Carolyn Whitfield. Denying his attraction to her, he decides to intervene when he hears that she's planning to entrap a rake for marriage.

Carolyn can't figure out why Huntingdon is bothering her, he's avoided her in the past. Joking with a friend at a ball, she suggests they should marry rakes so they can spend all their time reading while their new husbands spend time with their mistresses.

I loved that Huntingdon is drawn to Carolyn against her will. Carolyn is also really sweet and confused by his attentions. It's sort of a cat and mouse romance. Anya Cade's writing shows a lot of promise. I also loved seeing characters from her other book and look forward to reading more in this series.

I wanted more of this book, it was pretty short and the teasers of the other men of Everly Club made me hope the writer hurries up and writes the rest of them. Cade may be a new author but she's finding her stride, I can't recommend her two books enough.

This is the first time I have read Ms. Cade and her style is descriptive and flowing. This story follows a full length novel - Caroline, Whitfield is in love with books and fears that a marriage might end her dreams. Caroline and her friend Elizabeth (Lizzie) decide that Rakes make the best husbands as they will be busy with other women and leave them to their own devices.

Baron Huntingdon, Aaron recently returned from war finds love to be a hassle and an obligation. Caroline and him are often at loggerheads, as her sister is married to his best friend. Their feelings do run deeper and Aaron acts on those feelings when he realizes Caroline's plan to trap a rake.

I loved the chemistry - sweet and steamy in this novella. I can't wait to read Lizzie's story.

Romance Level: 4/5
Steam Level: Kisses and open lovemaking scenes (no coarse language)

An entertaining story, sweet and spicy at the same time, fun characters, reads quickly and easily. Two regency-era friends think they might need to find a rake to get married to, so they could go their own way, while their husbands would go the other. This is the story of Caroline who doesn’t really wants to go to a ball, exceptie for visiting the libraries. She’s happy with a good book. Aaron suspects she’s actively looking for a rake, and decides he should be the rake for her. It;s not a long story, just the right size to read if you;re short on time, of like for me, a bedtime story. Some Pride and Prejudice references, Aron the wealthy titled grumpy gentleman who should be in want of a wife and a captain who is not quite as amicable as he seems
I’t s serie to look forward to, because Caroline’s girlfriend also has to find her rake.......

You know the saying “reformed rakes make the best husbands” but is it true? Not according to Aaron. Oh yes, he is a rake but as with all romances he is a rake with a heart. I like how Anya stays true to the characters. Aaron is unashamed of what he is and says so. What is Caroline to do, she wants what she wants - a rake who will ignore her after marriage. Her and her friend Lizzie are on the hunt which leads to funny conversations and situations. You can see them in the ballroom talking about it and Aaron overhearing it and being furious and refuses to allow it. There is also a “villain” which reminds me of Pride and Prejudice - Colonel Melton. Anya brings us a story that will titillate and engage you with these characters. Another great story from this this author.

Loved it! Caroline and her friend Elizabeth knew that they needed to find husbands, but they both wanted to be free to pursue their particular interests. So, they decided that if they married a rake, he would become bored with them, go about his usual business, and leave them free to do as they pleased. Aaron, whose good friend married Caroline’s sister, caught wind of this scheme and decided to put a stop to it. This is when things got interesting. This story has fire and fury, a wonderful cast of characters and an engaging storyline. I read this in one sitting, as I was not able to put it down. It held my interest and left me waiting impatiently for the next book in the series.

More Than a Rake . . .

Caroline Whitfield knows exactly what she wants for her future. It is a given that she must marry, she accepts that. However, she has no desire to fall in love. She wants a husband who will ignore her and allow her to live her own life as she pleases. So she makes her plan to find a rake to marry.

Aaron, Baron Huntingford, is newly titled and still adjusting to being a man of leisure. He is aware that Miss Whitfield seems to dislike him. But when he hears her plan to marry a rake, he accepts the challenge and will give her one… himself! Will she fall for the handsome Baron she has been trying to avoid?

Another great book from this author. I love her writing style, where the stories flow smoothly. Her stories are also entertaining, and her characters are quirky and fun. In this case, Caroline and Baron Huntingford each have the wrong perspective of the other, which leads to some fun as they discover how wrong they are.

Loved this book with Caroline who knows she must marry but decides along with her friend Elizabeth that if they marry a rake they will be able to do as they want while their rake husbands ignore them. Aaron the Earl of Huntington overhears their conversation and decides to teach Caroline a lesson by showing her a rake in action but the only lesson learned is he falls for Caroline and she falls for him. Really cute story with fabulous characters.

Falling for the Baron is an easy, short read with fun, quirky characters and a touch of spice.

Caroline Whitfield has no wish to fall in love, though it’s a given that she must marry. Caroline’s plan is to marry a rake, who will spend all his time with his mistress, thereby leaving her free to pursue her own interests.

Once Baron Huntingdon hears of Elizabeth’s plan he decides to intervene so will Caroline’s plan be successful or will her plan fall apart?

A novella that grabbed my attention and held it to the end. Expect some surprises, and some steamy scenes. Although part of a series (which I had not read), the story stands alone well. I suspect it will be like a chocolate—hard to eat just one!

When the smart meet the devious, you know there are going to be sparks! She’s the smart, he’s the devious, but love sneaks up on them both through their banter and clashes. It only takes one kiss for their obsession to be solidified, and from there, it is only a matter of time until they get to the marriage contract <3
