Jesus Christ this is one of the Only Omnibus I couldn't even get all the way through. At a massive 1500+ page count I had to tap out around page 850-900. I can't fully remember cause my mind was filled with so much mumble jumbo horse shit magic lines I couldn't stand it anymore.

The first 3 arcs are fine. Nothing special but nothing horrendous. But once this title starts crossing over we get into some truly AWFUL storytelling with some really shitty fucking reasoning on why we're getting transported to different "worlds" or universes and...you know what, just fuck it. Skip this one. At best it's readable and fine, at worst it's a fucking slog and a waste of your life here on earth.

A 2 out of 5.

DNF, half of it is double dipping of the story in the New52 Justice League omnibus, the rest was mediocre.

This was one of my most anticipated Omnibus reads and the biggest book I've ever read. It took me weeks to finish it but left me feeling extremely disappointed. It starts off extremely strong feeling constantly fresh and exciting but just after the middle of the book it takes a huge dive in quality. Scenarios become repetitive and predictable, characters don't develop and the writing gets worse. By the last 200 pages I was done and ready to give up which is such a shame because like I say the first half is absolutely fantastic.

This was on paper a fantastic idea. A Justice League team that focus on magic and sorcery. A team with Zatanna, Deadman and my favorite Constantine, sign me up. It starts good, but gets bogged down by 2 major events that gets pushed inbetween the story (really not a fan of that) ended being a slog of a read, while i was so looking forward to this one.

2.5 stars.

Very okay. Nothing amazing, an increasingly interesting cast. Ends on a cliffhanger

A great magic tale. Honestly drags a bit in the middle with the forever evil storyline going on for 8 issues to many but overall a book with a lot of fun character moments and varied stories.

Some really good stories and some very average ones. The ending arcs had some weird pacing that made the series end on a but of a whimper.

4 stars. This was a ton of fun and I really grew to enjoy these characters. Constantine is definitely a focal point and he is very compelling, although he constantly lets you down and you should know better than to trust him or expect him to do the right thing. Zatanna is great and shines a lot more in the back half of the book. Deadman was a surprising highlight and a very likeable guy. Many others appear throughout and are members of the team at different times such as Swamp Thing, Frankenstein, Black Orchid, Madame Xanadu, Nightmare Nurse, Shade the Changing Man, plus there is plenty of Pandora and Phantom Stranger.

The run starts off by Peter Milligan and is very much a character-driven story about how these different, flawed people come together. His run does not last long before Jeff Lemire takes over and turns it more into a traditional superhero team book, which worked for me. There are some fun stories and Nick Necro and Felix Faust are definitely recurring villains who never seem to go away throughout. Then it includes the entire Trinity War arc, which is generally a solid event. I did like that it included a ton of stories afterwards with Pandora and Phantom Stranger because without seeing what they were up to here, it always seemed like they disappeared completely as soon as the Crime Syndicate showed up for Forever Evil and it never seemed like they had any resolution, so I am glad they got some more time here. Phantom Stranger is such an intriguing character, I enjoyed seeing him. All that being said, it goes into the Forever Evil Blight storyline, which drags on forever. It encompassed multiple books and every time I thought it was getting close to wrapping up, it was not even close. Generally it was a good story but it dragged and I wish we got some other stories instead. The rest of the run (and it seems to be the longest stint) was from J.M. DeMatteis, and I thought he was excellent and incorporated so much crazy magic.

There were a lot of different arcs throughout and I think they were all good. There is the team first assembling, then the team was getting into the Black Room at ARGUS and Dr. Mist double crosses them and is working for Faust. There is the hunt for the Books of Magic. They end up in some weird dimension they need to save at some point with this boy Tim Hunter. There is the long Forever Evil Blight story. I think there are more stories with people being in other dimensions or the like. The last arc Zatanna is stuck near the beginning of time while the others are stuck at the end. So some pretty crazy stories and surprisingly a lot of them were world / universe-ending type stories.

There was just a lot to enjoy about this. Characters were great and the team dynamic was fun to read, including all the conflicts they have with each other. Art, primarily by Mikel Janin in the first half, was excellent. The House of Mystery ends up being their home base for a while and it is such a cool concept. It does have some flaws though. Forever Evil Blight story was too long, and some of the stories could have been smaller scale. I liked Zatanna a lot, and Constantine is very interesting with how dirt he is. I like that they have history. However, Zatanna needs to move on from him. It is made clear so many times how much better a person she is and how he does not deserve her and yet she still has feelings for him and gives him more chances, and their love for each other ends up being the key to different spells. It just seems beneath her to still be attached to him and also seems disingenuous that their love is so strong to make different spells work. Other than that, this was an excellent read.

DC has tried the idea of a supernatural team a few times, from Nightforce to Shadowpact (and a couple of others along the way). They've mostly been short-lived, so it was grea to see just a long run of JLD, especially with a strong group of writers in Milligan, Lemire, and DeMatteis. At its best, it really fulfills that premise with the Enchantress arc that leads things off and the death of the universe that closes it out being some of the most interesting.

But unfortunately, this volume is also full of flaws that kept it from reaching its full potential. The first is the rotating creative teams. Milligan put forth a really strong concept of broken people seeking redemption, but then Lemire turned it into a a much more typical superhero story. DeMatteis had his usual weird mysticism, but it worked more often than not.

The big problem, though, was the crossovers, whcih take up more than half of this book and really grind its progress to a halt in the middle. The worst is the Forever Evil: Blight crossover, which just goes on and on through two major arcs, each of which is way too long. (The problem was stretching it across a whole line of horror comics.)

But, I was well aware of those flaws going in, and was thrilled still to read this volume once more.

Now could we have Shadowpact and the Wonder Woman JLD please?

Anyone giving this series less than 5 stars is an absolutely idiot.

This series came out during one of my favorite moments in comic book history, when DC Comics decided to take a totally different and much needed path. Guys like Snyder were on Batman, and we had incredible spin-offs with more minor characters like Swamp Thing, Animal Man, and so many other great stories written by some of the greatest comic book writers in our lifetime.

In the midst of all of that epic storytelling and exciting new storylines came Justice League Dark, and it was probably my favorite arch of the entire New 52. Yes, we had some of the greatest Batman stories ever told, an outstanding Red Hood arch, and Animal Man seemed unstoppable, and so many others, but this was one of the best, and I must say, Lemire was especially good. This is the arch that made me a huge Jeff Lemire fan. This is absolutely worth your time! Read it!
