Sleeping Dogs Lie

2 hours, 8 minutes

From the internationally best-selling author of My Lovely Wife and He Started It comes a twisted, entertaining novella about a dog walker swept into a criminal investigation when her client winds up dead.

Shelby works as a dog walker in Northern California, and she’s just finished up her biweekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner—Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company—dead on the bathroom floor. As a detective interviews Shelby, a medical examiner inspects the body, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

I came for the dogs, stayed for the mystery, then CHEERED for the ending.

So many cool kids on Goodreads have been listening to this Audible Original novella written by talented suspense author Samantha Downing that I had to sign back up for an Audible trial so I could join them. The “Audible Plus” catalog comes with many short exclusives like this, and based on this one I’m going to try to cram in a few more before my time is up. I mean, if I’m at a buffet I’m going to eat, mkay?

What I loved most about Sleeping Dogs Lie is how the compact length of the novella cut all the fat and allowed the author to deliver one taut plot. A dog walker brings a husky (all-time best doggos in the world - change my mind!) back from the dog park and finds its “owner” dead in the bathroom. A detective then arrives on the scene to suss out the killer.

There’s a very limited list of suspects, and I still didn’t guess correctly. But when the denouement played out, it put an oh-heck-yes smile on my face. :)

I’ve been meaning to try audiobooks for awhile, and finally decided to give in...thinking what better way to test the waters than with a novella...and written by an author I love.

Shelby is a dog walker, and has just brought Pluto, a husky, back to his home. His owner, Todd Burke, is always at work. Shelby usually brings Pluto inside and leaves immediately. On this unfortunate day, she has to use the bathroom...and finds Todd’s dead body inside the loo, on the floor.

Told from the perspectives of Shelby and Detective Carla Grady (who is interviewing Shelby at the scene of the crime), it soon becomes apparent that there may be more to Todd than meets the eye...and plenty of motives for the murder.

This is a fun and clever mystery with humor sprinkled throughout. I had a fun time trying to figure everything out. KEYWORD: Trying. I didn’t guess the culprit OR the motive. All I can say is that it’s expertly handled (as per usual when it’s written by Samantha Downing), and while I don’t condone murder...I appreciate the lesson that was conveyed here. Very much so.

The best part? No tragic animal harm. 🐶 Can’t say the same for the humans. 🤷‍♂️

I really enjoyed the narrators, Melanie Nichols-King and Lindsey Dorcus. Their reading kept me engaged, and I loved the inflections they used to differentiate the characters. I’m looking forward to trying more audiobooks, even though I did have to increase the speed (Fast reader = Semi-fast listener).

This is an Audible Original, and available now through Amazon.

I love listening to audiobooks, however some are just so long that it takes me forever to get through them. This clever, twisty novella from Samantha Downing was just the ticket. There was no nodding off to this one, I was too engaged in the story and WHO DONE IT😊

The novel is told from two points of view. The first is that of dog walker Shelby who cares deeply about these dogs and has gotten to know their personalities quite well. That’s why when she drops off her last walk of the day, Pluto, she knows something is wrong as he won’t stop barking when let back into his house. After some investigating, Shelby finds the owner, Todd Burke, lying dead in his bathroom face down. She calls the police who show up soon, led by Detective Carla Grady. Shelby spends a lot of time answering any questions that the detective and her partner asks.

She tells them about the fact that Todd and his wife Regina are estranged. There are other characters involved who may have had a motive to kill Todd including his neighbor across the street who has threatened to call the police if Pluto doesn’t stop attacking his little dog, Pluto is a large, but sweet, Husky. There is also a disgruntled partner of Todd’s in his supplement and wellness business.

They police start doing their thing but coming up empty handed, nothing really points to anyone who would want to kill Todd. When there is another incident in the neighborhood the police ratchet up their search for the killer.

The second point of view which comes later in the novella is that of Detective Grady. What she discovers after extensive searches and interviews will leave you stunned, surprised and ultimately extremely entertained 😎

I can highly recommend this audiobook, it was fast paced, cleverly plotted and the narrators were fantastic.

This novella is an Audible original and I can’t wait to try another!

Great short audible original!

Shelby is a dog walker. On this day, she is walking Pluto with other dogs as usual but what is different is that after their walk and while returning Pluto home, she makes a gruesome discovery.

Detective Grady is in charge of investigating the crime. She is the one who will follow the crumbs to find the murderer.

Sleeping Dogs Lie has two quite interesting female main characters. The dog walker, Shelby and Detective Grady.

The dual POVs gave me the chance to understand both characters.

The best thing was the reveal. I can’t say much because it will be a spoiler. I almost wish I could.

The narrators did a good job at keeping it entertaining. It was the perfect novella for my commute.

Cliffhanger: No

Such a great treat for dog lovers! This is a excellent novella that is completely satisfying. The events, details and clues are perfectly times. Not what I had expected, which made it even more enjoyable.

Shelby has a dog walking service and seems to have a wonderful way with dogs. She has the knack and loves Pluto, a Husky who loves little dogs (in a very specific way 🤣). Pluto’s owner, Todd Burke, is a workaholic with little time for Pluto. Upon returning from Pluto’s walk, she finds Todd Burke dead in the bathroom.

And that’s all you really need to know about this little gem. Listen to it and you won’t be disappointed. 🐶

Hi everyone, I'm the author of this novella! The first thing to know is that this was inspired by my brother, who owns a dog walking/sitting company in California, the same area where the story takes place. It's also the same area where I grew up. Back then, it was a sleepy little suburb but the Silicon Valley explosion changed all that!

I hope you enjoy this novella! I wrote it last year, while stuck in my house, and I had a lot of fun with it. I hope you do as well!

“Sleeping Dogs Lie” is an audible freebee by Samantha Downing and is two hours of entertaining listening. Shelby, a dog walker, finds her employer dead in his bathroom. Shelby was returning Pluto, the dog, back home when she needed to use the bathroom. She thought she could do a quick restroom visit and be on her way. Finding her employer dead was a bit of a shock.

Enter Detective Carla Grady. She interviews Shelby and attempts to gain information about the deceased. Shelby reveals that her employer is going through a divorce and has dog issues with a neighbor.

I continue to be fascinated in the abilities of short story writers. In less than two hours, a fantastic story is revealed, with a bit of a surprise ending. While Detective Grady unravels the mystery of the murder, other odd events occur. Downing left the short story with the ability of a sequel. I enjoyed this witty story.

Hilarious dogwalker leads reader up the proverbial, garden path.

(yesterday)
huh! I mean huh? I think I'll go back and listen again to the second half of this very short fun mystery. I think this is the first Downing that I loved...but I'll need to go back and pick through the poop to find more clues, just to be sure.

(today, con’t)
It’s official. Finally, a book by Downing that I LOVED!

So, on second listen to the second part of the book, I notice that I missed the last (third) chapter completely. It’s a mystery why this happens to me so often, I suspect I only think I am awake when I hear the closing lines of a book.

Shelby Dogwalker drops Pluto (a good-natured Husky) off at his home, and goes inside to use the toilet…She dials 911 after finding Owner, dead on the bathroom floor. The Police arrive at the scene and Detective Carla Grady questions Shelby about her relationship with the dead man, her relationship with his soon to be ex-wife, her relationship with one of his employees, and her relationship with the neighbor across the street. Shelby answers all of Grady’s questions in great detail, fully disclosing unflattering personal information about herself, which may be misinterpreted or held against her later on. She is helpful and has plenty of time to shoot the breeze with Grady before her next dog-walking gig at 4 PM. Once Grady has finished with her questioning, Shelby leaves with her charge, until ex-wife Regina can be reached to take over Pluto’s care.

Tralalalala, the police go about the business of sifting through the poop (er, business records, phone logs, and information provided by Shelby), looking for clues. Unflappable – that is how I would describe all of Samantha Downing’s characters – the reader is lulled, waiting patiently (and gleefully) for the sh*t to hit the fan.

Then comes the big reveal at the end of Chapter Two . Now THAT was hilarious – and so well done. Cinema buffs will definitely see it coming as they imagine Detective Grady’s wide eyes darting from object to object, scattered about in plain view, as the truth slowly dawns on her.

Chapter Three was only an epilogue of sorts, tying up loose ends like motive and tallying up bodies…I loved the story even with loose ends.

I listened to this story/novella on Audible+ The narration was excellent.

What an Ending!

Leave it to Samantha Downing to Surprise me Yet Again!

“Sleeping Dogs Lie” is a Mystery Novella that packs a punch (that’s not the shocking part, I promise!).

Shelby is a dog walker, who, upon bringing Pluto home to his owner Todd, finds his body on the bathroom floor. An investigation quickly ensues and the dirt it digs up, leaves everyone reeling.

Told from the perspective of Shelby and the Detective, this little mystery delivered a lot more than I bargained for!

A crazy, fun, well written novella that is perfect for animal lovers.

Thank you to Audible Original and Samantha Downing for this little Gem.

This was my second book on audible plus, and was a fun quick mystery!

Shelby, a dog walker returns from a walk with Pluto, a husky to find his owner dead on the bathroom floor. Todd Burke was a well known local business man, but what happened to him?

I enjoyed the start of this audio, as the mystery unravelled, and I loved the doggos! The narrators were great and drew me in. I didn't see the twist coming, but found it unbelievable and extreme!

I'm not sure why I was surprised, since Samantha Downing is the Queen of dark and twisted, in a fun way?!

I'm definitely in the minority here though, so if you want a fun, quick mystery, and you're a dog lover like me, at just over 2 hours long, this might be worth a listen!

Rarely a short story or a novella leaves me completely satisfied. I think Sleeping dogs lie is the first time I rate one of these with 5 ⭐️. I loved every single minute of it! Since minute 1 when the husky is trying to hump the shih-tzu I knew this was gonna be my kind of story. I loved both perspectives and how twisted everything turned out at the end. Some people might think that the reasoning for the murder was out of proportion but I’ve never read a more justified motivation.

Super fun and entertaining novella that served as an appetizer until Downing’s new book release next July.

Being an animal lover myself, I knew I had to give this audiobook a listen. Shelby is a dog walker. When she finds one of her prominent clients murdered with the only eyewitness a Husky named Pluto, the thrill ride begins. I loved the message of this fast paced novella. The narration was excellent and added an extra layer of intrigue to this cleverly twisted tale. 🐾🐕

This review is going to be short and to the point just like this novella. Sleeping Dogs Lie was such a quick and fun mystery. I listened to most of it while out for my daily walk and wished I had a dog to walk while listening. A nod was given in the book to one of my favorite movies which was an added bonus. Thank you, Jayme, for letting me know this was available in the included Audible books. I really enjoyed it! 4 animal loving stars 🐕 🐩 🐶

3 to 3.5 stars!

Sleeping Dogs Lie is a short audible book about a homicide, a dog walker and what really happened on that fateful day. The audiobook was well written, and the narrators were good!

I liked the twist at the end but is it really that believable? Not really.
I had to suspend a lot of belief on that ending and I just can't see it! Hahaha

I did think Sleeping Dogs Lie is very twisty and that was fun! I liked the dog theme in the book since I'm a dog lover/owner as well.

I’m definitely going to check out other books by Samantha Downing in the future!

This ending didn't just speak to my soul - it opened me up, burrowed through the human parts of me, and snuggled right in.

In addition to the standing-ovation worthy denouement of this novella, the journey there was taut and riveting. We have Shelby the dog walker who returns sweet, rambunctious husky Pluto to his owner after a long walk, only to discover him murdered in the bathroom. An investigation begins that slowly reveals layers and layers of secrets and lies.

This was tightly plotted and masterfully woven. I had a deep affection for the why of the ending, but I also LOVED the who . The reveal was flawlessly executed. Downing borrowed a page from one of my all time favorite movies, to which she references and credits. I won't reveal it because it will be a major spoiler as the movie, the character, and the ending are very well known.

The who and the why were perfect one, two punches for this reader. If you're a dog lover, then you must give this dog-themed thriller a listen on Audible.

Downing never disappoints! Cheers!

This novella is about a dogwalker named Shelby and a husky named Pluto and the mystery of who killed Pluto's owner. The other main character is a detective named Carla Grady.

Most of the reviews for this book are for the audible version but I haven't ventured into that particular mode of reading yet so I read the Kindle version. It's a quick read and could probably be read in one sitting. It's a clever story with likeable characters and many dogs. Also some nuggets of humour. Very enjoyable.

One of my favourite lines in the book comes when Detective Grady is talking to her partner on the phone and he tells her not to go and talk to the elderly neighbour on her own, then says "Don't you roll your eyes (even though he can't see her). No one's more dangerous than an old man with a gun." And this is why I won't let my husband have a gun! Also loved the last line in the book but you'll need to read the book to find out what it is.

I totally had a cheesy grin on my face when I finished this novella. It was classic Samantha Downing and despite the shorter length it managed to pack a punch. If you've never read anything by this author, you are missing out as she brings a lot of crazy and fun with her writing. This story involves a dog walker, and rather than give away a plot for something that's less than 100 pages, I say just sit back, and enjoy the show! Worked perfectly for me as an evening read after a stressful day.

It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there ;)

This was a fast, enjoyable suspense novella. I was not sure what to expect going into this short story, but I know anything by Samantha Downing is going to be good! Sleeping Dogs Lie is quite different than all the other thriller/suspense books that I have read, but I love what the author has done. Read this story, you will not be sorry- especially if you are a dog/animal lover such as I am!

I have never read, or listened to a novella, so who better to start with than the fabulous Samantha Downing. She did not disappoint. This was an entertaining story and the 2 narrators were superb. Perfect for the dual perspectives of the dog walker and detective.

The story follows Shelby, a dog walker, and her discovery of the dead body of one of her dog owners. The police are called and an investigation ensues.

If you are a lover of mystery or just a fan of dogs, this is for you. I loved how the pups took center stage and were their own characters with charm and personality.

One of the best endings I’ve ever read in a thriller lol! If you love dogs you have to check this one out.

In comparison to Samantha Downing’s latest release For Your Own Good, I liked this one better; it’s fast paced and entertaining, although a little too short and underdeveloped. My feelings can be summed up in a single sentence: I enjoyed reading this short story but it wasn’t anything groundbreaking. However I still highly recommend it!

This entertaining audio was the perfect length for my commute yesterday - 2 hours. I read and enjoyed My Lovely Wife, so was very happy to try this after reading some rave reviews. I liked the narration and the fact that the author could squeeze the whole mystery into this short amount of time. I don't think that any one could guess the big reveal.
