Lena and Webb had it all figured out. They couldn't go about the start of their budding family in a traditional way, but they were willing to try anyway. That was until Hugo came to town. Thinking a chance at a true mate had long-since passed him by, Webb picked up the pieces of Lena's tattered heart years ago only to break it again when she was most vulnerable. "What are you doing?" Hugo questioned. "Touching the baby.""You're—what?" "His hand is on my belly," I told Hugo. "It's the closest you can get to touching the baby. If it makes him feel better..." I drifted off, closing my eyes again. There was a heavy silence in the room."Does it...does it feel like anything?" Hugo asked. "No, her tummy is still flat," Webb said. I could hear the smile in his voice as I was pretty accustomed to it after living with him for so many years. " But I can almost imagine I can feel him or her kicking in there."That was met with another long pause."Can I feel?" Hugo asked. He sounded like a boy of 2 years old, wanting to touch some animal in a petting zoo. "Sure," I said, my eyes still closed. This was getting weird. I heard Hugo get up and then move over to the other side of the bed before hopping on. Then two hands were on my stomach, still as they tried to sense any movement. I almost wanted to laugh at the two of them. Both stubborn."I see what you mean," Hugo said. "It's almost like there's something moving around inside there.""Well, when you're done, turn the damn light off," I grumbled, tired enough not to care if they continued to place their hands on my belly. "Sorry, Lena," Webb said, and flicked the switch off. I was soon asleep in the land of nod. If I had any interesting dreams, I didn't remember them, though I woke up with two warm bodies on both sides of me, their hands still placed over my stomach.
R.K. Knightly is a pen name for a civil servant based in the San Francisco-Bay area. Born in New Jersey, she moved to California in 2007 with her husband, a San Francisco native. First interested in poetry from a young age, she wrote her first short story in second grade. It was a little mystery/thriller she drew the pictures for. Her teacher, Mrs. Michaels, told her mother that she should think about writing as a career, though she should probably look into hiring an illustrator for the art work. Ms. Knightly took journalism classes throughout high school and creative writing courses in college. A lover of all genres of books from autobiographies to sci-fi, Ms. Knightly started writing erotic romance in early 2018. After a few months and two books, she came up with an idea for an erotic supernatural romance which has become popular on the Dreame app. Now she splits her time between the two genres, though her most popular works on Dreame are her supernatural novels. In her spare time outside of writing, Ms. Knightly spends times with her fabulous extended family.
I saw this on KU and it looked juicy AF. I’ve always wanted to see this scenario… a couple dating when the mate shows up… YUM. Unfortunately, it didn’t deliver the gut punch I was hoping for.
The book (prologue) opens with Helena and Webb already having been together for several years. Helena’s mate has died, and Webb believes his has either died or mated with another as it’s very rare to not find your mate in your early 20’s. (he’s turning 30) They live together, and he pushes to start a family. The first chapter skips 6-months later with Helena learning she’s pregnant the same day Webb meets his mate, Hugo. (both H's are bi)
Two things killed my feels.
❌ The book skips over the relationship building of Helena and Webb, so I wasn’t really feeling their pain. ❌ The plot/relationship is poorly executed and lacks any development or emotion. For me, it didn’t work that the dudes were true mates, it made Helena feel like a sidekick. At the same time, it didn’t make sense how quickly Hugo changed his mind.
Bottom Line- This was a miss for me. Their relationship had no substance, and I got zero feels. There was no chemistry or connection, so everything felt like it was about sex. I like smut, but 300+ pages is a lot with no emotional connection.
For example,
That doesn’t make me feel like they love her, nor can I get into the smut because it all feels cold and flat. I needed something and ended up bored for much of the book. It does have a nice epilogue six years later.
This was a low drama sweet shifter MMF book. There was a lot of MM content and smutt throughout the book.
It’s not heavy on the shifter aspect of the plot. There is only one short scene where the men are in wolf form. I was a bit disappointed with this. I like the wolf to be as involved in the plot as the human. Other wise it’s pointless to have..
I was really invested at the beginning. I loved how she was the “OW” and how heartbroken he was over losing her, but driven to have his mate. I enjoyed seeing his emotions and need to find her and protect his baby. While Hugo dealt with his jealousy and feelings of inadequacy.
But once I got to around a third of the way things got so sweet and…. The plot lost its traction. There wasn’t anything going on in the book besides just everyday activities, her pregnancy advancing, and sex.. it was boring once they became a throuple. so I was pretty much over it. LOL
I love angst and drama. Love it. Personally I wanted them to fight it out longer. Oh I wanted her angry and making life miserable for them. Lol but it really wasn’t like that.
Another one of my naughty guilty little pleasures that I like to read who wouldn’t want two men ;) for their own loved the twist and turns and ok a may or may not have snorted a laugh or two out loud at times and maybe just maybe had a tear or three highly recommend this book love love loved the story of Lena Hugo and Webb x
