↪ It is a part of inter-connected standalone series. This novella takes place after Tragic Lies but before Ruined Hopes
↪ Is there a HEA? Kinda // it is a happy for now ending. The issues of different colleges was placed on the backburner as they are in the honeymoon phase of their relationship

▻ Follow characters who are musically gifted
▻ Setting: seniors in high school
▻ Told in dual perspective - Phoenix [broody hero] and Lennon [quiet nerdy heroine]
▻ Tropes: MC from the wrong side of the tracks, enemies-to-lovers, & forced proximity
↬ ⚠️ Trigger warnings: ⚠️ attempted suicide, rape, self harm, suicidal ideation
↬ 70% of this sneak peek was campus sexual violence & suicide statistics. Basically, the main heroine would talk to the reader in her inner monologues about statistics she found on Google. Ahh, the almighty Google Gods...
↬ Nightingale effect - Cecilia (h) falls for Gabriel (H) who prevented her from dying by suicide
↬ Taboo fuckery is locked in for this one as this book starts off with Oakley (main heroine) having an affair with her step-father
↬ Dubious and no consent were already present by chapter 3
↬ Blackmail: Chase gets Oakley as a play thing so the video of her isn't released to everyone

↬ Ivy Smoak is a new-to-me author and gives a 5 chapter sneak peak in the anthology. It is told only from the main heroine's POV - Scarlett who is a senior at Empire High. There are other characters set in the Empire High universe, this is just Scarlett's story! So far, Scarlett has the quintessential mean girl group causing trouble with main heroine and makeover trope. Lastly, it alludes to a possible love triangle & friends-to-lovers trope.
❓ How is it questionable ❓
↪ DOUBLE STANDARD: HIGH ⇈ // 2/5 chapters were focused on how Scarlett was dressed inappropriately with a short skirt... yet her brother wore his uniform incorrectly and that was considered OK.
↪ PLOT: So far, the plot seems rather predictable and the drama is rather petty between the characters already.
Maybe // Although it seems somewhat problematic already, I am open to give this book the benefit of the doubt and see where it leads. Jacob >>> Axel intrigued me more and there was some decent angst that I liked with the book.
↳ Stella (h) recently moved from the states to London for her senior year. The summer before her senior year has been uneventful as her father made a strict rule of her not leaving the house at all until school starts. Stella decides to sneak out one night and ends up in a cemetery where she meets Sebastian (H). They instantly connect and end up hooking up. However, this is not going to be a fun memory for Stella as Sebastian has his reservations about her and sees her as his target now at school.
↠ Steam Factor: High
↠ Plot: It piqued my interest but it remains to be seen if it is overall developed well... as I can already see some of it being predictable
↠ Will I read this book? Yes. Originally, I read Thorn by Tracy Lorraine and it was an “ehh, okay” read, I am hoping this one will be better
↬ In the anthology, Ginger Scott gives a five chapter sneak peek of this novel. This novel will be a part of series and I highly recommend to either start with this book or read as part of the series. It is told only from main hero POV - Lucas Fuller. The timeline partly matches with Varsity Heartbreaker & is intended to compliment the first book in the Varsity series.
↬ How is it questionable: Varsity Heartbreaker was a watered down version of Bully by Penelope Douglas. I feel that Varsity Captain will ultimately be the watered down version of Until You (which is the same story as Bully but told in Jared's POV).
↬ Will I read this book? Yes // I would like to see if Lucas is redeemable as a hero at all and if Varsity series continues to mirror Fall Away series by Penelope Douglas.
➟ The Hate I Feel: Siobhan Davis
➟ Tease Me: Piper Lawson
➟ In A Week: Becca Steele
➟ Hot Summer School Nights: Michelle Mankin // lost interest and skimmed until chapter 9
