Valor survived betrayal, captivity, torture, and DNA manipulation along with his special ops team. Most of the males who survived this testing and restructuring have no memory of who they were beforehand. Valor, however, has repetitive nightmares that are always the same. A female running after him, calling out for him — only she’s calling him another male’s name. She’s desperate, begging for him to wait for her, come back for her, but he doesn’t know her and other than in his dreams has never even seen her. He can’t sleep, he can barely function, and he’s becoming a danger to all who depended on him. Then on the way home from a meeting with military brass, he sees her from the window of the vehicle they are traveling in. He jumps from the vehicle and pursues her, snatching both her and her daughter from a very public grocery store parking lot, and takes them back to Alliance with him.
Becky has struggled for five years to scrape out a life for herself and her daughter. She lost her husband — a special forces soldier — before she ever gave birth to her baby. The military refuses to give her any information at all about the incident that took his life, stating only that he was at first missing in action, then confirmed dead while carrying out a critical mission. Angry and resentful, blaming the military for the death of her beloved husband, she refuses any benefits that she may be entitled to and moves across the country to Texas in an effort to start fresh. It’s hard most days, but she’s managed. Until the day she’s kidnapped from the parking lot of her local grocery store by a man who places a hood over her head and angrily growls commands at her as he shoves not only her, but her four-year-old daughter, repeatedly to the floorboard of the car.
Becky and Valor forged a connection years ago that even memory loss, and DNA manipulation cannot sever. Valor refuses to allow her to leave his side. He doesn’t know who she is, but he does know it is his responsibility to protect her. While at first terrified, Becky becomes furious when she realizes the lunatic who’s kidnapped her isn’t even supported by those associated with him, as they plead for her patience and offer apologies while promising to get her and her daughter home safely. But then she gets a look at him, and both their worlds come to a crashing halt. She knows this man. Her long-dead husband is the lunatic.
Warning: This book is intended for mature audiences. This book contains violence and abuse both real and implied, and sexual situations that may be disturbing for some readers. If you are offended by these subjects, please do not buy this book. While some aspects of this series and the beginnings of the world it is set in are dark, this series is ultimately a tale of survival, revenge, healing, and love.
I write Paranormal, SciFi and Fantasy Romance. Why, you may ask? Romance, because who doesn’t love a good romance, and the lack of reality in the story lines - because, well, normal is highly overrated. I’m 55, I have two kids, one 32 and one 12 (yes, God does have a sense of humor), one grandchild, one husband, and a menagerie of animals. Literally, too damn many things that eat wandering around our property. I love to cook, and I am a voracious reader, though since I started writing I don’t get as much time to read as I once did. I am a homebody and prefer my writing/reading time to a crowd. I have had stories and fictional characters wandering around in my head for as long as I can remember. I started letting them out into the real world and surprisingly, people have loved them. I am a Self-Published Author, and I like it that way because I can decide what and when to write. I am by no means a formal, polished, properly structured individual and neither are my stories. But people seem to love the easy emotion and passion that naturally flow from them. A bit of a warning though, there are some “triggers” in them that certain people should avoid. I’m a firm believer that you cannot have light without the dark. You cannot fully embrace the joy and elation that my people eventually find if you do not bear witness to their darkest hours as well. So please be sure to read the warnings supplied with each of the synopses about my books before you buy them. I've got three series published at this time, Avaleigh's Boys - PNR, Whispers From the Bayou - Fantasy PNR, Haven - a SciFi, and three more in process. I’m a bit sarcastic, scathing actually, and a smartass to boot, so if I offend you, it is most likely not intentional. But be prepared because it probably won’t be the last time. I’m always glad to hear from readers; those who have followed me from the beginning, and those who have just found my people. So feel free to look me up and say hello, or just follow along; either way, I’m glad to have you.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙🖤💚💜❤️ Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎 Character development: 😔😅😂🤣
The Hero:Valor (a.k.a. Aiden) - he was special forces in the military and was on Maddox (a.k.a. Lethal’s) squad, both in the military and once they were all sent to an experimental research facility where they were tortured, abused, and genetically altered with drugs and animal DNA. They were turned into super soldiers and can turn into beast-like versions of themselves at will. They are better than any human soldiers, hard to kill and with exceptional sight and hearing as well as fangs and claws. Their entire pasts were wiped away and when they were freed, they didn’t even know their own names, much less anything about the people they left behind.
The heroine:Becky - she was married to a special forces operative and was about to have his baby girl when he died. She hasn’t been able to get any information about what really happened to him and hasn’t really gotten over his death. She has struggled to raise her daughter Skylar for the past four years. She moved to Texas, hoping that getting away would help get over Aiden’s death, but was plagued with nightmares.
The Story: While Becky was having nightmares about Aiden, Valor was also suffering from nightmares about some woman he couldn’t remember. So, when the squad is driving in a nearby town one day and he sees that same woman loading groceries into her car at a supermarket, he jumps out of the car and kidnaps the woman and her little girl.
The story was good right from the start. Not only do they have to figure out what to do about the fact that they kidnapped a woman and a child off the street in broad daylight, but even after they figure out that Valor used to be Aiden, he still doesn’t remember Becky other than the fact that he has been seeing her in his dreams. Also, there is the fact that Valor is basically an entirely different person than Aiden was.
I am really liking this series so far. The writing is terrific, the storylines are well developed and exciting, the world building is great, and the characters are all like one big family. I read Sandra R. Neeley’s Whispers from the Bayou series before and really loved those books, and so far, this series has stood up to that one just as well.
I absolutely ADORE this book. It was everything you want from a Sci-Fi military action/genetic mutation book and then some. I can never say enough about the author's captivating style. She envelopes you into the story and you feel connected to the characters on so many different levels. In this story, we meet Becky who is a military widow raising her 4 y/o daughter on her own. She has faced many struggles as a single parent and refuses to take any of the benefits due to her as a military widow. She is resentful and blames the military for her husband's death. Unbeknownst to Becky she is technically not a widow because her husband is alive although he no longer goes by his former name-he is now Valor, a Variant male. And this is where it gets exhilarating and complex. As we get to know this couple who were/are married, we feel for Becky- the shock of finding out her dead husband is alive yet not really knowing the male her husband has become. Valor is super Alpha male, going through the different phases of emotions as he comes to realize that his life has an added element that will change him forever, even more than becoming a Variant male. He is a husband and a father. I ate it all up- the possessiveness, the protectiveness, the familial bonds between the Variant males and females, and most of all the powerful force that love can be. I highly recommend this book if you love Sci-Fi Alpha males in the genetic mutation trope. I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review.
What I like about the book: Now for the juicy parts! This book is the second part of the Variant series and tells a tale of love and reunion. We already know the beginnings of the Variant and their society. We know who is who and what are their roles in the story. So Sandra R. Neeley focuses more on the love story than the politics, making this book more relaxed and light-hearted.
The author focuses on Becky and Valor, but we still see the other characters, including Nina and Maddox, who still seem to be the story’s central point because all the other characters go to them for advice and action plans. They are the ones that make things happen. They protect their team and people and always look out for their happiness. It doesn’t matter if they have to bend the rules a little.
On the other hand, Valor and Becky's love story is entirely different because they know each other from another life. Their love withstands the hardships of memory loss, and now they must find one another again. Here, we have an independent woman who will settle for nothing less than what she wants and a male who wants the same.
So we see them fight and bump heads because they want the same but don’t know how to get it. This keeps you reading because they have suffered enough, and we want to see them happy together. So, the question of whether they would be or not a family again is constantly in your head, and it makes for a fast reading. Trust me, I read it in two days tops.
What I didn’t like: I know it is a short book, but it was too fast-paced for me. It left me wanting more, and in the end, it feels like the author is writing quickly because she just has to end the book and move on. And this is confirmed in the epilogue because she tells us the main problem of the next book. We are talking Variant problems here, and in this book, we only focus on Valor and Becky, nothing else, and what we know about them needs to be more.
Their romance is too fast-paced compared to the first book and the story of Nina and Maddox. Sandra R. Neeley sets a rhythm and simply falls short in this book. But there is the hope of seeing more of them in the following books and, maybe, knowing more that way.
To whom do I recommend this book? This book is for lovers of sci-fi romance, strong female characters, healthy relationships, smut readers, and those who withstand a little hardship to make way for happiness.
IMPORTANT: I recommend reading the first book before reading this one. So, you understand what's going on.
I liked the storyline but I really wish that * * * * the rape element didn’t happen in the 1st book - that spoilt my enjoyment of the book, knowing that Valor had sex with other women. (Yes, I know he was drugged, he didn’t remember his past etc).
Becky spent more time talking to other people about her feelings and situation, than Valor. Incidentally, that's the point of the story. However, they maybe saw each other five times so when would she have had the chance to tell him? I feel like she was not given the chance by the author, but again, THAT is the point LOL It's a vicious circle. We are also totally avoiding the birth control issue, still. A little girl who does not speak like a 4 yr old would. There seem to be like 3 other stories building in this book - par for the course with this author, as is the multiple POVs. This too felt too wordy and I skimmed through a good 15% at one point. She's also falling back on "ya'll" towards the end, which is exactly what she does in Riley's Pride series. So her writing pattern becomes more pronounced the deeper you get into the story.
Was it better than the first ? I think so. Although I stilll dislike Nina, even more so in this one, she walked around the duplex she lived in with the man she loved and lost, and has zero emotions. It’s gonna sound mean, but New Species is the brand name, and Variant is the generic brand. NS is definitely, better written than this.
First, a note, if you like the New Species series by Laurann Dohner, then you will love the Variant series by Sandra Neeley. I beta read for Sandra and I didn't take as many notes on this story because I was so absorbed in reading it! We get a few new characters added this time. Of note is Sin. I think we'll be seeing him again in the future.
This story is about Becky and Valor. Valor is a tortured soul and he's struggling with dreams that seem real. Becky is having dreams, too, of her husband. She believes he is dead. Imagine her surprise when she's kidnapped from a parking lot by the very man she thought was gone! Her daughter, Skylar, is with her and she brings a very sweet element to this story. I love how Valor is with his little girl. This book really has some fun bantar between the guys. Neeley always shines in the details. All of the personal connections between the characters and the general feel of a family atmosphere really light up this book. Valor has great action scenes and steamy ones, too! I'm hoping for Two's story next. I really fell more in love with that guy. Fantastic book! 4.5 stars
An awesome story of love renewed! I love Lethal’s team of Variant males! This indomitable crew never ceases in their hunt to retrieve more of Dr. Waller’s victims and bring the doctor to justice. Valor’s issues with sleepless nights are brought to a head when he publicly kidnaps a woman and her daughter. I cannot imagine the confusion of not knowing things from the past, but having the deep-seated need to have someone from that past nearby to protect. So many emotional issues for both Becky and Valor to work through. How they manage to reach a happy conclusion is quite a story. It involves insightful assistance from a number of their friends. One of the newly rescued males fascinates me. On the surface, Sin looks laid back, carefree, with only pleasure-seeking on his agenda. Nothing could be further from the truth. I wonder what others will think of him? One of the aspects I find most rewarding in this author’s stories is the way secondary characters’ lives are developed alongside the main characters. The sense of community with common goals, needs, and dreams creates a well-rounded world. Well-crafted, with tantalizing insights to the future.
*WARNING* contains adult situations This book brings us new characters to like or dislike. One of those characters are as damaged as he is sinful and I'm looking forward to getting to know him better. I adore the growth between Lethal and Nina in this book, even though it's not their story anymore, I am glad to see them still here. I think the best part of this book for me is the talent of the writer. I can feel the inner struggle that Valor has between his altered DNA and his human DNA, because Valor is a good male through and through. She also struggles, but not because of DNA, but because she wants to be with him, but not if she has to be controlled. There's A lot of feelings in this one from many different characters, so open your heart and be ready for an adventure.
This series is one of the best I have read all year. It brings you into the lives of military men who lives have been lead down a road that had major bumps along the way.
Valor and Becky story is one that stole my heart. Their love proved to be soul deep. No matter the changes made to Valor he still remembered Becky to be the one true love he was meant to have. I so enjoyed reading as Valor and Becky found the new road to love all over again, while they dealt with memories of their first road to love. Their daughter just adds to the story with her brilliant mind and loving heart.
I can't wait for the story to continue with the next book.
I’m very happy to read the progress of the Variant and how they are beginning to become less feral. They are bonding with people. This is something that the Dr didn’t anticipate, I believe he only wanted super soldiers with no need for families. Families are a weakness, but they can also be a great strength. I’m so happy to read that there are memories coming through. I know that finding Dr Waller too soon would end the series, but I almost don’t want to read anything else or about any more of his atrocities. He is so evil and needs to die ASAP.
Thank you Sandra R Newley, I’ve read most of your stories & really enjoy your voice!
These stories are really good, well written & thought out, the world building is above most series & the character development is very solid & understandable which is important because is they don’t make sense then the story falls apart. The love stories are very good & compels being invested in each couple’s happiness, you just can’t help but root for them. Overall I so happy to have found these books! This series is so worth your time & $, bonus they are on Kindle Unlimited so indulge to your heart content. Take Care & Be Safe!
This second book in the Variant Series is week worth the wait. We are starting to see the Variant community come together and how individuals are dealing with their lives. Valor is one of those and he never really forgot his wife in his heart though his former self is gone. Becky has to come to terms with this new male and whether she wants to try again to love. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the next installment. Miss Newley please write faster, lol. I’m waiting.
Wow!,,😮🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶Lets just say I started from the second last in this series due to other people’s bad reviews and skepticism, Well!,, I certainly won’t do that again! People can be so sensitive. I’m not that’s why I enjoyed every morsels of this wonderful series. The major point for me was the extra banter and laughter, and everyone involved, a little piece of their lives was discovered while the main character is around. Miss Sandra’s brain is phenomenal, she rocks in every installment and book series. You immerse yourself so much you forget your surroundings. 🙌💥
This was a fantastic read! I enjoyed the continuation of The Variant’s story. I love how the relationship between Lethal and Nina has grown. I liked the new addition of Valor’s family too. I look forward to the next book and the next Variant to find love.
My only con would be I would have liked more danger on the missions more action in general. Hopefully, with this new threat there will be more action and intense scenes.
This book is easier to read than the first book, the triggers are still there but not as pronounced as the first book where it gives you details and descriptive actions at what the characters endured, this storyline is just as good and takes you deeper into the characters lives, you want to know what happens next and how it will all play out… I’m ready for the next book and hope it’s as good if not better than the first two in this series… a good recommend
I'm so glad this series was suggested by my search engine.
I'm enjoying getting to know the characters and how they cross over to other stories.
If you are looking for action, danger, reading/watching people learn a new way of life or enjoy alpha males and their females and lets not forget good verses bad (I'm the type that talks to the characters as the story progress). Then this series is for you.
I hope you'll enjoy this series as much as I have so far.
The first book to this series was very intense and I was excited to get another. Now I can't decide which one I loved more. It can be read alone but reading both really made me appreciate the growth of the characters. I don't want to give spoilers so I am just going to leave it with I highly recommend!
This is such an action packed novel! This book is part of the Variant series but can be read as a standalone. Becky and Valor are an exciting couple with a darling little girl. Unfortunately Valor has no recollection of them! This second novel is a wonderful addition to the overall storyline but is still Valor and Becky's novel.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Becky and Valor were a great couple. Their daughter Skylar was super cute. The world building is awesome and intriguing. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book and this series.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Loved Variants story. I'm a complete sucker for a HEA. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Really hope it's Two's story
This author is great!!!! I have read some of her books but if I had to pick a favorite I couldn't. The Variant series characters are interesting and the way this author tells their story is entertaining. Please Sandra R. Medley continue the Variant series!!!!!!
Wow. I must say I'm really enjoying this series. I have already read Sin's book, but I would really also love stories with Steel, Two, Feral, Vicious and Brutal. Can't wait for the next book!!
After reading the first book I knew that Valor's story would be great! He has a wife he only remembers in his dreams, his heart and soul, but not his mind. Just because they find each other does not mean it's all hearts and flowers. He's changed and so has Becky. He, an alpha male, must learn patience, understanding and how to be a husband and father. New Variant's are rescued and introduced and we learn more about Alliance and many of the others who call it home. I was so happy to see Lethal and Nina and his team out on missions and during down time. This is a story of love, faith, comprising and learning to live again. Already holding my breath for the next book in this series!!! IT'S JUST THAT GREAT!!!
Valor's unexpected dream of a crying woman is thrust into reality when he sees her across the busy parking lot. His past is forgotten and her memories are not his new future. But something in her eyes and her words speak to him. And when she takes matters into her own hands, it becomes his fight to set things right. Standout characters - Two and Skylar. His simple kindness and honest caring puts all others to shame. Her 5-year old curiousity and charm brings out the best in others.
