At the ass-end of the galaxy, Allied Forces—including the 142nd Mobile Special Ops Team, better known as Daire’s Devils—stand ready to defend the contested colony planet Demeter from military invasion and corporate exploitation.
But when the ranks are infiltrated by those determined to secure the top-secret designs of AeroCom’s new prototype flagship, the Cromwell, the newest member of the Devils, Corporal Katrion Alexander, finds herself facing off against an unexpected menace, synthetic operatives indistinguishable from living beings.
She and the Devils must neutralize this new threat, but how when the enemy wears a trusted face?

I received this advance reader copy from Danielle, who is a publisher, editor, and author. This book is a hard military science fiction and not a genre that I usually read. I've written a couple of hard SF short stories for Danielle for two of eSpec's anthologies: "No Man's Land" which all the short stories are written by women! and "Best Laid Plans" and had fun writing both (and the only reason I wrote them was Danielle "pestered" me and I'm so glad she pushed me to get out of my writing comfort zone!).
The reason I usually shy away from hard SF is all the focus is usually on the cool advanced tech and how it works and on the alien societies, etc... and the characters lack emotion. I'm more interested in the characters and their interactions. So it was a nice surprise that this book had likable characters and even a touch of romance. And I love a team of people who it's obvious they've worked together for a while and are like family.
The book still has the advance tech and all the cool SF elements. The plot is about a new military ship that is supposed to be super advanced and, of course, all the antagonists are out to either hijack the ship or steal the plans for it. The main character, Kat is part of a spec ops team called Daire's Devils and they are tasked with keeping the ship and specs out of enemy hands.
This is the first book in the series as there are a few plot threads that are left dangling. I'm curious to see how the story advances.
Full disclosure: I was part of the Kickstarter for the book, as I follow the publisher eSpec Books. They have really good anthologies. I’m a big supporter of independent publishers, so after I placed the paper copy on my shelf, I dove into the ebook.
I believe the book has a good premise, but ultimately lacks polish. There were times where I went back to reread a paragraph or two as the flow didn’t make sense. I don’t know the RPG universe was set in, so it was difficult to understand the factions beyond a surface level.
Kat is an interesting character. She has a lot to prove & has to be better just to be equal. The premise of her being in a special ops team is wonderful, seeing the team from her point of view and not really from that of the Master Sergent whom the group is named.
The rest of the human characters lack depth. I never really got to know them, with the twists that take place. The team, except for Scotch, is just floating around Kat.
Now, Spec rocks. In no uncertain terms, I want more Spec if there is a sequel. A Kat and Spec team would be a delight to follow.
In the end, the book didn’t hold well together for me. Polish. A bit more explanation as to what is going on in this universe & why. A bit more focus on building out characters so they can really live on the page.
My questions and concerns (spoilers within):
Don’t get me wrong, I want to encourage more books like this. Ones where the author takes a chance on the readers. I know the author is putting their baby out there for all to see. I also know that sometimes it works spectacularly (Joel Shepard is my go to indi military sci-fi author) and sometimes it needs more polish. It hasn’t diminished my desire to see more from eSpec Books.
Corporal Katrion Alexander is a member of the 142nd Mobile Special Ops Team, also known as the Daire’s Devils and they are the ones called in to make the hard decisions and take on the hard missions and as their newest member, the Corporal is on the receiving end of the usual hazing by the rest of the team, however, when she is given an assignment which is separate from the rest of the team, she feels like she is been left behind.
While on this assignment, although she feels abandoned, she doesn’t have much time to think about it when she is thrown in at the deep end and left to sort out someone else’s mess, she is not impressed in the slightest, but she gets on with her assigned duties anyway, but the way in which she does it is not as protocol suggests and this gets her into a bit of trouble. This is only the start when she finds herself on the receiving end of some less than stellar treatment and starts to second guess everything she thought she knew, but she also uncovers some vital information at the same time, that a synthetic fighting operative has replaced a vital member of the hierarchy and she discovers this by ending up in a confrontation with one.
As she is debriefed, the plot thickens as a plot within the Allied Forces is revealed when someone tries to steal valuable information about AeroCom’s new flagship called the Cromwell and the secrets that ship holds, but nobody knows who the infiltrators are, or who they are trying to steal the information for. Meanwhile, the Devils are given a new mission to aid in the defence of a planet which is at risk of exploitation and military invasion, the planet Demeter and this particular planet is a heavily contested piece of terrain, but with the information they have, can the Daire’s Devils complete their mission, or will the infiltrators get what they want and blow the mission apart?
This is a sci-fi with action, reaction and subterfuge, where one tight knit team must unravel the plots they have been thrown into the midst of, in this fast paced race across the galaxy where nothing is as it seems and trust is hard won and even harder to keep as you fly along with the team from the beginning of the mission until you have to know how it ends.
This book was a good read, and a fun one in fact I would like to say. The book gave us engaging characters. And the author knew how to keep us as the reader interested, and our toes in fact. I loved how each event led to something new, and questions of trusting your own constantly arose. Fantastic read!
I loved how the book is about a military, which was different from past books I have read that have been more less in the sci-fi genre. I found that alone gave the plot and atmosphere a different take rather than I would expect the story to be. The group we got to read about, I would say there were so realistic to me, they defended what they had to, no matter what. They were courageous and stood for something.
Something that I also really enjoyed was the constant questioning as I briefly touched on. I found that within this group there reasons for trust issues. And made myself wonder who could be a snake and who is actually true to their word? The story kept flowing really well and I could not put it down!
Wonderful and action packed read! I loved this book and this amazing author and I do highly recommend you read this book, as well as look into works by this author. They crafted this book so perfectly as well, it was one I really had a good time reading, and I will be looking forward to read more of their work!
Daire’s Devils by Danielle Ackley-McPhail is an epic military sci-fi story full of action and adventure. I know from reading this story, and the intro that came at the beginning, that Daire’s Devils is set in, and based on a RPG game and it’s ‘world’- and I definitely think this would make a great game, or even a movie/series. The author’s detailed descriptions brought this futuristic space adventure to life, and I loved all the action and adventure. The characters were really great, and it was easy to get absorbed by the story, although there were parts where the story felt rushed, or skimmed over- but overall, it was an enjoyable read. So, if you love sci-fi military adventures that take you to the farthest reaches of the galaxy to join a crack squad who are tasked with defending a colony who is under threat of invasion, then this is definitely the story for you. Add in some hidden agendas, politics, espionage, and treachery…. and things get interesting. Happy Reading!
This is a new author for me and from the cover I thought “Gears of War” video game immediately. As a huge fan of those books, I was pretty sure that I would enjoy this one as well. It did not disappoint. Just as with that series this is also full of action, adventure, and military science fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope that there is more to come. I thought that she did a wonderful job describing the characters, especially the foes and forces around them. This is something that is usually not easy for most sci-fi authors in my opinion. She did a phenomenal job. I didn’t want to put this story down and once I reached the end I was begging for more. I loved all the action that took place and found myself vividly imaging it as I went along. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are into the military sci-fi video games. I would also say this would be a great read for any middle school readers that are into video game genre books.
Daire’s Devils by Danielle Ackley-McPhail is officially on my list of favorites! This is an awesome military sci-fi adventure! When I decided to read this book, I really didn’t know how I would like it. I’m not at all familiar with the military and it has never been a big interest to me. I can now say I am hooked. This book kept me engaged and I can’t think of one character that I didn’t absolutely love by the end of it. I was worried about the multiple points of view aspect since I don’t usually enjoy that method of storytelling but it was very easy to keep track of all that was going on. I loved, loved, loved the banter between the characters and Scotch and Kat are in my heart! The plot was great and the action kept me on my toes. I laughed hard and was brought near tears reading about this team. I can’t wait to read a follow-up. I was so upset when I realized I had come to the end of the book. Please hurry up with that next book Mrs. Ackley-McPhail!
Daire’s Devils is an exciting military sci-fi novel. It combines influences from the real military with a vibrant future setting that will satisfy even the pickiest sci-fi fans. The story is gripping from the start. We see Kat, believing she’s been given a boring job to keep her safe only to find that she’s in a lot more danger than she realised. There are levels of secrets and mysteries to solve, and plenty of action along the way. I love Kat’s resourcefulness, and she’s not overskilled to the point of seeming unrealistic. This book will appeal to fans of Star Trek and other space military stories. There’s great attention to detail, including seemingly mundane aspects like what the showers are like and how the “meat” is produced. This paints a vivid picture, and helps make the story more believable. They also address things like grief and guilt for the ordinary crew members who are killed when a ship is destroyed – something which many stories seem to gloss over. Daire’s Devils gets five stars from me! This is a captivating story that will take you on an amazing adventure!
This book has sci-fi and action. It is a military story.
Give 'em a good thrashing! Allied Forces—including the 142nd Mobile Special Ops Team, often known as Daire's Devils—stand poised to protect the disputed colony planet Demeter against military invasion and corporate exploitation at the furthest reaches of the cosmos. When those seeking to steal the top-secret plans of AeroCom's new prototype flagship, the Cromwell, infiltrate the ranks, Corporal Katrion Alexander, the Devils' newest member, finds herself up against an unexpected threat: synthetic operatives indistinguishable from live people. She and the Devils must stop this new menace, but how can they do it when the opponent has a familiar face?
I loved this story. I loved every page of it. Every chapter was exciting. This is my first book from this author and I can’t wait to read the rest of her books.
I enjoyed this book. It was my second attempt to get back into the science fiction and space genre! The writing and world-building were good and did engross you quickly into the story of Corp. Kat Alexander and her fellow devils! It is definitely a fast pace and adventurous novel to get your hands on! The interactions between Corp Alexander and her crewmates, especially with quick-witted Sgt Scotch, adorable Spec, and the hell water Sgt Daire, you are definitely going to want to know what happens next. The only struggle I had with this book was the military jargon that was in the first half of the story. It felt like every other word describing the surroundings, weapons, ships, had me raising an eyebrow asking “wait what?”. However, after a while, the jargon seems to disappear and it isn’t so much. It is an enjoyable science fiction book to read if you are looking to explore the genre.
Let me tell you this was a new one for me. Completely out of my comfort zone but something about that synopsis and a few teasers drew me in to an author I am already familiar with. This was for starters an incredibly vivid read, and I could tell that this a passion of the authors and I can appreciate that. Now, I don’t know a thing about RPGs but I will say this has to be a fantastic one to base off of because it just jumps off your kindle. I did find myself struggling from time to time as a person who isn’t already familiar with this world and would maybe suggest some smoothing in the writing in future books to help that for others in my shoes. I enjoyed the entire team of characters and really want to come back for more adventures. This is definitely one to check out if you like military sci-fi loaded with action and adventure.
5 Stars Daire’s Devils (Daire’s Devils Series Book 1) by Danielle Ackley-McPhail
Daire's Devils is the first book in the Daire's Devils series. This is a Military/Sci-Fi that has lots if adventure packed with action. I was pulled in from the beginning and had a hard time putting it down. It was a perfect snow day read. I’m a fan of this author and have reaf several other books by her and this one is definitely going on my favorites list. The storyline was easy to follow and the characters are fun and relatable. It’s a fast paced story that is packed full of action. The Daire's Devils are a special ops team whom is ready to defend their colony from an invasion. Be careful who trust you never know they could be the enemy and you not know it.I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next? I can’t wait to read more from this series and author.
This was a really good fast paced adventure. The author does an amazing job of describing the scenes to make the world out in space seem as realistic as possible. You feel yourself caught up in the story and guessing the motives of every character you meet. It's a story about a special ops group called Daire's devils. They are at the far ends of space protecting the colony from invaders. It seems a straight forward job until someone trys to get their hands on a new prototype aircraft. The problem is is the enemy someone from the outside or someone within their ranks.
It becomes a guessing game trying to unravel who is behind it all and leaves you feeling throughout that story that you can't trust anyone even the people you think you know.
This is my first book by Danielle Ackley-McPhail. I was not sure what I was getting myself into. The cover looked like a comic book cover type. I found myself immersed in the storyline. The story had so much detail so that the mind’s eye could visualize what the author wanted me to see. The characters were interesting and developed. There was a lot of action, almost too much. The adventure did seem like it was rushed, but it was still a great story. This story has some military tones to the story but the action and adventure is what kept this moving right along. I do caution that maybe times you read fast but watch out because you may have overlooked a detail. I highly recommend this book. It is a great read to get lost in to leave the world behind for a short time.
Daire's Devils was not in my normal genre of reading, and have not read anything before by this author, but I am so impressed. Danielle Ackley-McPhail creates a wonderful mix of characters that are realistic and relatable. The reader can't help fall in love with the comradery and quick humor between the characters. There is also great works building, much of that world created in space. There is a lot of information in the book concerning characters and other information, and that sometimes muddled the story a bit, but it is all relevant and useful to the story itself. Overall, Daire's Devils is a great, fast-paced read full of twists and turns, drama, but also friendship. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!
I enjoyed this fantasy story. This is not my first book by this author but it is one of the most enjoyable ones by this author that I have read. This is a well written story where enemies could just be someone you trust. A story where a group of special ops, Diarie’s Devils, are ready to defend their colony against an invasion like no other. This is a story that is fast paced and full of action. The characters are relatable and bring the story to life. This is an engaging story that was hard to put down. I enjoyed the growth of the plot throughout the story. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
This book is a die-hard military sci-fi and is the first book in the series. The author's words and story building made it easy to imagine what was going on. The characters are hard not to like and they find themselves in plenty of action as they face an unexpected menace. Defending the colony planet in a plot that has some interesting concepts. The stakes are high but not all the threads are woven to finality leaving the door open for the other books in the series. This story is fast paced full of action. At times it felt a little rushed, so I had to reread some things as there was a lot of information to absorb.
Join award-winning author Danielle Ackley-McPhail for her sci-fi cross-over "Daire's Devils." Ackley-McPhail combines sci-fi with military action which will bring readers from both genres together for this fast-paced story. This is not always a successful combination, however, here it is done well and even if you don't regularly read either genre this book will surprise you. The traditional military themes of loyalty and courage are woven into the story along with the question of deception which keeps the plot moving along. This is a book that solidifies Ackley-McPhail's place among prize winners!
This Sci fi military story isn't a genre I would normally read but I am glad I gave it a chance because I enjoyed it very much. This book is full of action, great characters, suspense and danger. The author did an exceptional job keeping me entertained and the detail was so vivid that it felt real. I was kept on the edge of my seat wondering who was the enemy, who was working for who? Kat found herself in some dangerous situations, but she didn't let it stop her from doing her job and what she believes is right. There are many other great characters. When I got to the end I wanted more. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Jump into an action packed high stakes military Sci fi adventure!
this is a well done military Sci fi that starts out with Kat a MC who thinks she's been dispatched to a boring assignment but it turns into anything but. This multi POV military Sci fi brings so much camaraderie, sarcasm, quick humor and strong attention to detail that you feel immersed in these characters adventure and its hard not to like any of them.
I did feel like the action was a tiny bit rushed so I had to slow down my typical reading style to make sure I got all of the well built details but it is worth it as you can easily miss important bits it you aren't paying attention.
this adventure is left open with hopefully more story to come as you'll be invested in the outcome of the story at the end!
Fantastic world building...in space! Even though we dropped right into the action, I was able to understand all the factions, each with just enough description to let me know which side of the playing field they stood on. Our main character is tough, she hangs on no matter what. If you like a heroine that fights for what's right, knows her worth and gives her all, this story is for you. The author weaves the storylines together seamlessly, with enough background to provide motivation, loyalty, strengths and weaknesses.. all parts that make up a fabulous adventure!
I have read books by this author previously and I really like her imaginative and creative writing style so when I saw this book I was looking forward to starting and I wasn’t disappointed. Again the author was able to capture my imagination from the very beginning. Her attention to detail means that I can vividly imagine the setting for her stories with ease. The story definitely had the ‘gaming’ feel about it which made it really interesting to read. The characters are interesting to read about and there was some good banter which added a fun element to the story. Overall I really enjoyed the story and would recommend.
People always say, don’t judge a book by its cover, yet everyone does, at least to an extent. I know I do! So, when I saw the cover, I was intrigued, when I read the synopsis, I was immediately hooked, and reading the story, I was absolutely not disappointed. The author has this way of writing that just draws you in, like you’re standing in a corner listening to and watching the events as they occur. I adore Kat as a character, strong-willed, independent, and just a general BA woman. I also adore the teamwork and the friendships between the Devils. They are just so genuine, and I know at least I want to have relationships like those in my life. I adored this book, and the world it was in!
This story proved to be high stakes and totally immersive from the very start. Kat is an MC that is easy to trust. Her intuition proves to be her best ally. The relationships between the characters was very well done, especially how they dealt with death, even if the life was lost by their hand. The attention to detail by the author was really well done. Highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into military sci-fi. Once you start this story, your whole world is left behind and replaced by this one.
I thought this was quite an exciting story that certainly had a lot packed into it. There were a few times I thought the pacing of the book wasn't quite right bit I still found myself engaging with the story and the characters. I enjoyed the premise of the whole story and there were a couple of standout characters that really made it all the better. This is an enjoyable story for any fan of this genre.
This was a wonderful epic military sci-fi story full of action and adventure. The main character is a tough, heroine that fights for what’s right, she knows her worth and gives everything she has, and to not give up. The story really comes together with a lot of adventure. This book was fun, amazing, entertaining, and keep you on your toes of what’s to happen next. It was well worth the read and will be waiting to read more.
A fast paced adventure about a special ops group called Daire’s devils, who have to protect their colony from invaders. But trouble brews when someone tries to play with the prototype aircraft, and it becomes difficult to trust if the enemy is actually from outside or inside. This is a sci-fi/ military thriller which keeps you guessing till the end. The plot is quite engrossing and the characters are likeable. It was an enjoyable fast read.
This book was amazing. The author’s imagination really showed through the words. All the action that was packed into this book made it even more enjoyable. I am new to this author and their work and I was very entertained. I normally do not read much military based books, but this one was a great addition.
I gave this book a try because I love sci-fi and anything with space. I did struggle with it because there was too much information and I feel like it took away from the story. The story was good it was just overshadowed with all the extra bits of trying to explain things.
This action-packed read will have you on the edge of your seat as you become enthralled in this adventure. The characters really carried the book with the action that followed. I enjoyed every part of this read!
