Grace

To whom does God extend his saving grace? This is a question that goes to the heart of the gospel, God’s character, and faith in Christ. It is not, as the scholar Erasmus protested to Martin Luther, an obscure academic dispute that upsets the unity of the church and would be better left aside; it is, as Luther replied, an essential theological issue which deals with what God does and what man does in salvation – and what, Luther asks, could be more important for a sinner than to understand what God does and what man does in man’s salvation?
