I first read this book back in 2003. It was the first book of Ellen's that I'd ever read and I've been hooked on her books ever since. And don't let the "for Teens" in the title fool you; this book is PERFECT for any beginner to the Craft. Ellen is funny, personable, and gives several personal anecdotes to compliment the information she gives. Her information is quite accurate, she gives healthy emphasis on learning the ethics, not being a dabbler, and not doing any magick that screws with anyone's free will, etc.

She also places emphasis on the fact that you don't have to have fancy altar tools to be a witch. Naturally she acknowledges that there's nothing wrong with having altar tools, just that a Witch is not crippled from doing magick if they do not have all the thingamabobs. She tells about the beauty of simplicity and the magick that is done when we get close with Nature.

So whether you are a beginner seeking a good foundation from which to begin practicing or you're a veteran witch just looking for a down-to-earth refresher, this book is pure delight!

I thought it was very informative. It teaches you the basics of Wicca without leaving out anything you need to know. At the same time, it's not overbearing; it gives you the freedom to discover things on your own. I was pleasantly surprised; magick is a very delicate subject to write about and Dugan explained it well. All in all, a good book.
I've been Wiccan for three years, and I've read this book countless times because of the extensive information it provides. I've read hundreds of Wiccan books, and this is by far one of my favorites thus far. I hope whoever else is interested in Wicca picks the book up and finds it as helpful as I have.

I'm a new witch trying to learn all I can about witchcraft and Wicca, and so far this is my favorite book on witchcraft. It gets down to the basics in a non complicated way. It's a very relaxing yet inspiring book to read with excellent meditations and helpful information on the elements, elementals, color magick, tools, spells, seasons, holidays, crystals, candles, and just magick in general.

The author does an AMAZING job at explaining the Wiccan rede, the threefold law, and the consequences magick can have! She walks the reader through everything slowly and patiently. Even though this book is very informative, you'll never feel overwhelmed with information or like there's too much to take in. If you are new to the craft , this is the book for you. Teenager or not, I highly recommend.

I truly feel this book has helped me connect to the elements more, and helped with my understanding of the craft.

That being said, the book is not without its problems. The main one is that the author talks down to the teenagers the book is written for. She keeps reiterating that movies like Sabrina the teenage witch are fictional, and acts like teenagers are dumb, and like the reader can't tell fiction from reality. She likes to poke fun at us and say things like "that's fictional, don't you want to know the truth? The truth then." I'm 18, not 8, I KNOW lighting won't shoot from my fingers. it's a tad insulting, but teenagers are already used to older talking to us like that so it's not a big deal.

TLDR She's a mom and you can tell.

other than that? FIVE STARS ✨

I am not a new witch. I read this book to see if it might be something to introduce to my daughter. I am a huge fan of Ellen Dugan's books. This one was just as good as the others. Definitely a great book for both new witches and teen witches. Ellen's easy writing and funny sense of humor make this book a must read.

Okay basic overview, but very light on concordances and heavy on author's experiences with coincidental magic.

10/1/2021-I reread this book as an adult and while a lot of it was dated, given the time it was written, it was still a nice read with basic information that any teenage newbie witch should use and read about. I love how Ellen writes like she is just having a conversation with the person reading and I think it would be a nice touch for any teenager who reads it. My four star rating still stands.

This is a good book by Ellen Dugan. She gives lots of info on basic things to get started. She states a few basic beliefs and then goes into telling about the Elements and candle/color magick. She also describes working with herbs and using the outdoors alot.

My favorite part of the book was when she went into detail about the element of Water because that was one element I felt most connected too and it helped get to know what symbols are associated with that element. I also was interested in the Fire element too seeing as I'm a Sagittarus.

This is a book I think all beginner teen will love and should read. It helps with the basic's and does provide a few spells to use.

If you want to know about witchcraft and haven't known anything about witchcraft it will help a lot. 1 thing that I wished that is talked about was Pagan more because witchcraft is part other religions then Wicca. I also wish it talked about book of shadows and grimoire. If you decide to to read this for more info on witchcraft you should also also looked in to Pagan, book of shadows, and grimoire. But it was an awesome starter book into witchcraft and an amazing book about what it is really like being a witch and it had a lot of lessons.

One of the best book for practicing witchcraft for beginners. Easy to follow writing style by Ellen Dugan, easy to find materials etc. Ellen encourages practicing witchcraft through easy rituals which can be very complicated if the reader wants to go further. Also, Ellen writes her personal experiences, which is a very nice thing to read when you also practice.

I love the tone of this book! It's very motherly in the way we all wish we had a mother like this! Lots of good useful information and has some really fun stories. Great for young and old and those who want to learn from sources other than modern media.

I liked this book a lot. It has altar illustrations and meditations on the elements and tools used in witchcraft. It covers everything from crystal to candle magic and encourages the reader to think things through with cleansing.
