The world's greatest theme park has a new main attraction!
When on old friend calls for help, Sam Aston returns to the home town he tried to leave behind. It soon becomes apparent there is something loose in the rainforest, and everybody wants a piece of it. Aston and adventure television show host, Jo Slater, find themselves in a race against local criminal elements, environmental extremists, and mysterious mercenaries to find the creature before it kills again. Sam enlists the aid of his old rival, park ranger Rusty Crews, and Ned King, a naturalist with a flair for self-promotion, who would like nothing better than to find the perfect main attraction for Crocalypse, his new bio theme park.

Another exciting, teeth-crunching novel by David Wood and Alan Baxter. Crocalypse is packed full of nail-biting action, holding readers on the edge of their seat. A creature thriller at its best. If you are looking for a roller-coaster ride of sheer excitement, this heart-pounding thriller is right at the top of the list.
BFP! Curtis Hamsworth! Fans of creature movies (you know, the ones with only a survivor or two - if any - after the creature(s) rampage) and/ or Jurrasic Park are going to love this particular book. Set within Woods' ever-expanding Maddock universe, you don't have to have any prior experience with that world to have one hell of an awesome time with this romp through the rainforests of northern Australia. Part Jurassic Park, part creature feature ala Deep Blue Sea or Anaconda, and filled with enough adventure and even laughs to bring down a ... well, a Big Fucking Predator, this is simply a fun diversion from the "real" world that will leave you breathless... and wanting more. Indeed, the only quibble I have with this thing is the not-very-veiled shots at Sea World - and yet even then, the point *is* (eventually) made of just how much money comes to conservation efforts because of Sea World and similar parks. (Which is my ultimate real world point about such parks.) Beyond that particular sporadic commentary though, truly an amazing ride that will have you forgetting the "real" world for a few hours. And really, isn't that all any of us can ask for these days? :) Very much recommended.
Trigger warnings: death, gore, death of a friend, blood, graphic descriptions of death and wounds, alcohol abuse, death of a loved one, gun violence, death of a parent (in the past).
3.5 stars.
Was this EXTREMELY ridiculous? Uh, yeah. Were there FAR too many characters? Absolutely, even if most of them get chomped. But I had so much fun reading this that I didn't really care. It's essentially Jurassic World set in small town Far North Queensland and the whole thing is unapologetically Australian from start to finish. Like, the minute I saw "fucken" on the page, I was like "Aah yes. The song of my people. Alan Baxter knows his shit".
It's clearly a book that's interconnected with other works by both Wood and Baxter that I may or may not read down the track. For now, this was bonkers in the best possible way.
This is the first book I read by this collaboration, and as a (horror) thriller it is filled with action, blood and gore aplenty.
The main characters are well developed, but many of the secondary characters keep getting wacked before the reader gets to know them. You cheer them on, then they’re the next victim.
The last chapters are particularly hectic, building to a climax and a conclusion. But the door is open for future adventures.
The David Wood, Alan Baxter team up books are all great fun and this is no different. I recommend them all the time to people looking for adventure books.
Sam Aston #3. Really enjoyed this fun escape book. It would be perfect as a B-movie on the SciFi Channel. The only thing that was kind of a bummer was how the authors made the conservation woman into such an unlikeable person. Why? I loved everything else. I read the ebook. Copyright March 29, 2021.
Book with a bite Another Sam Aston win. This book had pretty much everything, good characters, monsters, great setting and action. It started out a little slower and most of the wild action and crazy revelations were at the end of the book. I think I preferred the first two books in this series, mainly from a monster point of view, but that's okay, it was still a worthy read !
Another great adventure for Sam Aston, he gets in such perilous situations. A great story with lots of action and adventure. If you like action then this book is for you.
Good third in the series, building to more. Was nice to see some old faces in this book. I feel some new powers have been set up for later in the series which is exciting. over all on par with the first two in the series, even if it was with a more simple idea.
This third Sam Aston book was heaps of fun and I love that it’s set in Australia. It’s a fast-paced read with heaps of action and, well to be honest, heaps of mayhem. Highly recommend.
This third (and final?) Sam Aston novel delivers another horrifying creature feature as something huge and prehistoric begins a reign of terror in the Australian rainforest. This reads like Jurassic Park down-under, and is once again hugely enjoyable, gory, frightening fun.
