Jamie has always loved a good story, whether real or imagined. He grew up in the south of England before moving to the north, where he worked as a history teacher. He still lives there with his wonderful family, but now spends his time writing, mainly about people hitting each other with swords. You can connect with him at his website, jamieedmundson.com
This book of short stories has a bit of everything in it, a story about a kick ass heroine, Moneva who was fed up of working for Max who got rich from her toils, so when an opportunity presented itself to strike out and make money for herself she took it even though the risk was high. The next is a tale in the grimdark genre of fantasy and deals with an unsuccessful mercenary leader who usually lived by the motto ' don't get into something you can't get out of' except that this time he did and he bit off more than he could chew. With an ending which is so ironic, so gritty humour it is. A tale about Sari, a young girl and her demon who kept bringing her down through his negativity, but who got his comeuppance when Sari met the witch Mustika, who informed her that everyone had a demon and that they all had to deal with their cruel taunts. I do believe this tale has a lesson to teach all of us who all harbour our own demons. And the final tale is about a young novitiate, Damir, aspiring to become a sorcerer and being the only one of his peers to walk the Magician's Path after five years of successful study but still having to face his last challenge. One which tested his loyalty rather than magic but which he passed with flying colours. The last two tales are from the Og-Gri-Dog series which is such a humorous, dark magic series I suggest you all read this before reading the two tales in this book. I really enjoyed the short stories which give us an idea of Jamie Edmundson excellent writing. Enjoy the book, then read the rest of this authors work!
Mercs & Magi: Fantasy Short Story Collection (The Weapon Takers Saga), my first read introducing author Jamie Edmundson. An anthology of enjoyable fantasy short reads. I look forward to reading more from this author.“I received a Bookfunnel audio copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
A great little set of stories in this book, each with an introduction. I like Jamie's writing style. He sets the scene up for the story and enraptures the mind. Some stories have a bit of humor, some a moral, and some include characters from his previous books.
Demon Days was my favorite story in this collection. Overall, the writing style did not grab me. Several of the plots were interesting but the execution was not my cup of tea and left me feeling flat.
There's no time in these short stories to descrive kingdoms, politics or complex relationships, but the four of them explain clearly a concrete situation with a few characters.
Instead of the big pictures he usually delivers, Edmundson brings condensated portraits showing his hability in short terms. He only explains what is needed to understand what, how and why happens. It's hard to say more with less words.
Each story is totally different to each other with a wide range of situations and characters (considering the circunstances).
The bonuses are two hints to his series "Me Three" (which I absolutely recomend), but haven't much sense without the rest of the series. Otherwise the four short stories are good enough to get a glipse of this writer hability.
This is the first time I’ve read Jamie Edmundson’s but, I already have another of his books, Og-Grim-Dog: The Three-Headed Ogre, that I’m looking forward to reading. The collection of short stories in Mercs and Magi actually includes the first two chapters of Og-Grim-Dog and it promises to be a great read,as well.
M & M has interesting, entertaining and varied short stories which I enjoyed very much. I highly recommend it.
