Amane’s confusing and frustrating life with the angel continues. Spending New Year’s Eve and Valentine's Day with Mahiru only leaves him more unsure about his feelings toward the beautiful girl. Could it be that his clumsy warmth is slowly melting the angel’s cold facade?
I like the main girl and the more realistic approach of two modern love birds. However, when the main character is not very likeable and the same stuff repeats again and again, I am disappointed to say that I will not continue to read this series. I just know that there are better romcom light novels.
Amane and Mahiru spent New Year's together. Naturally, they also ate o-sechi (rice-bean dish for New Year's), went to a shrine, and did various New Year's activities together. As time passes, their relationship keeps getting deeper and deeper. As a result, they both trust each other.
At first, they were simply neighbors. But, as they spend time together, they create a world with only the two of them in it. At school, Mahiru is an expressionless "angel," but her real personality is very kind. However, Amane and Mahiru's first meeting with each other was a bit odd. On that day, Mahiru had a tearful-like expression as she was getting wet by the rain. Yes, what was the reason for that? As Amane was remembering this memory, he found out the reason for that by pure coincidence. What kind of change will happen in their relationship as a result?
This novel was very wonderful! Like last time, it has a very consistently sweet and kind atmosphere. Because there are few characters, the author thoroughly made the backgrounds and personalities of the main cast very well. Amane can't do any housework but is properly able to do other things. Because Mahiru is a perfect human being, she doesn't have any real friends. But, thanks to Amane, she becomes familiar with Itsuki and Chitose, Amane's friends. So, with that setting, they both support each other's needs. Amane and Mahiru are just friends, but they have a lover-like relationship.
Personally, I really enjoyed their realistic relationship! If you are interested, please read it!
A sweet teen romance featuring a superficially perfect girl and a plain boy. It starts out terribly slow, but does eventually pick up the pace and touch upon a heavy topic. With the implicit promise of expanding upon said topic, the series may potentially explore the impact of a difficult childhood and one way to help someone cope with that. However, that is for volume 3 to explore, and this volume barely scratches the surface.
The Boring Beginning I want to illustrate how slow the first third of the book is.
Riding the high from the previous volume, the protagonist and his eventual love interest, Amane and Mahiru respectively, spent New Year’s Eve and New Year’s together. In fact, they had been spending every day together, hanging out in Amane’s apartment by themselves. Seeing them simply enjoying each other’s company was sweet, though Amane’s conflicted internal monologue over Mahiru may be grating to the more jaded among us. I assume I’m jaded, anyway. Maybe his monologue is actually grating to most people — I don’t know.
Putting my out-of-touch-ness aside...
They then visited a shrine together, as per the Japanese New Year custom. While this visit was made at the behest of Amane’s accompanying parents, the two ended up alone and made a small romantic advance.
These small, sweet romantic moments were sprinkled with bits of character development — most notably, a proper introduction of Amane’s father and the character dynamics of all four characters put together. However, despite everything that happened, it felt like nothing happened. Their interactions were fine, but not fun enough to be the focus. There was no meaningful tension between the two main characters, only the mutual embarrassment of Amane and Mahiru as they self-consciously participated in couple-like events.
Ultimately, the first third of the volume felt aimless because it kept crawling along without a narrative hook. The next event was another staple of Japanese teen romance — the girl fell sick and the boy had to nurse her back to health. After that, Valentine's Day. Finally, White Day — an event where the men returned gifts to the women who gave a gift on Valentine's Day. Across all these events — all these chapters of plentiful words — no narrative hook was introduced. The one teensy glint of a hook quickly turned out to be a dud. It was frankly difficult to keep reading when the two main characters simply inched closer together with neither conflict nor tension. I could not shake the feeling that the author was just checking off a list of the major ‘romantic events’ until she could reach the correct part of the timeline.
Perhaps the pacing was a consequence of adapting a web novel into a light novel, but it nevertheless felt pointless to read through.
Pleasant Prose My compliments to the author, Saekisan, and the translator, Nicole Wilder. Although the narrative meandered for far too long, the sentences and paragraphs themselves were often varied and sometimes creative. Colourful words were used where appropriate. Sentence and paragraph length was kept at a comfortable medium, with short and long ones used judiciously to match the pace of each scene.
A Smidgen of Something Special After one more romantic event, the narrative hook that was introduced in the first volume, but barely mentioned in this one, finally became relevant. Mahiru’s difficult childhood came to the forefront and it was given the proper gravitas. Despite Amane’s fervent desire to help his not-girlfriend, he had recognised that the issue was a deep-rooted, delicate, and complex one that could not be solved quickly. Although I personally dislike his stubbornness in this part, he also showed patience with Mahiru. He was patient with her and reassured her. He simply kept her company — and that was enough.
They stayed together, and they are set to work together to deal with whatever issue comes in the following volumes.
Overall This light novel is a passable romance with an arduously slow start. While it does set up a promising premise for future volumes, you may prefer to skip this volume and read a summary instead.

We are gathered here today to read volume 2 of The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten.
Personally, I read the novel with bitter coffee to allay the sweetness. It's the perfect way to wake up in the morning.
In chapter 1, we'll start out with the juiciest quote from the whole book. Trigger warning: blatant noodles.
We are starting to learn the rules of the universe: any misunderstanding between Amane and Mahiru will be resolved in the same chapter. Meetings with friends will be filled with conversations about Amane that do not resemble real dialog by real humans. Amane will continue to second guess the most blatant clues. Mahiru will do all the cooking.
"She hadn’t received one bit of the love she deserved. Honestly, it was a wonder she had grown up without becoming twisted and bitter."
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Vol.2 By Saekisan
Another beautiful volume. But man, Aname is quite slow. Even watching the anime I felt the same, it's too obvious not to notice, but what can we even do!
The main attraction of this volume would be valentines Day and White Day. Amane struggled to decide what to gift was enjoyable to read. Chitose is such a menace. Every time she's in the story, she makes things go crazy. Poor guy had to endure the Russian roulette of an obligatory chocolates. Furthermore, the sleep-over part was also nice.
The other main part would be the backstory of Mahiru, I had the same feeling I had while watching the anime. Her parents are just horrible and disgusting, to say the least.
Anyway, the next volumes are gonna be so much better!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first volume of the series and the second volume touched on some of the aspects I felt were missing from the first volume. Mahiru Shiina and Amane Fujimiya beginner really share and connect on a different level than originally introduced in the first novel. Without giving me spoilers, I will say that the story takes a dark turn towards the end and changes from your classic romance novel to something with more of a background. there appears to still be some information missing when it comes to Amane's background and change of schools but I believe in the future volumes will be better explained. Overall I was really pleased with the story and how it's been progressing, I would recommend reading this volume as well.
I like romance novels a little bit but always find strange that the characters jump from "I just met you" to "you are my soul mate" in the space of a chapter.
Finding this light novel that takes its own time developing the relationship between the characters is a nice change and I enjoy a lot reading it and getting to know the characters little by little and know why they are like that and the little things that are bringing them together.
This young adult romance novel is heartwarming and sweet. Like the foods Amane likes to eat, it also has its bitter and sour points. However none of it is spicy hot like the chocolates made by Chitose. I do think any guy can identify with Amane. Mahiru is the kind of girl that anyone would want to protect and care for. It is amazing how this story has developed. I'm anxious to read book 3.
Amane and Mahiru are slowly getting used to spending time together. But when Amane's parents come calling and they all dress up to make the First Shrine Visit of the year, rumors start spreading that Mahiru may have a boyfriend. Then Aname gets a chance to nurse Mahiru when she comes down sick. Then there is all the hullabaloo about Valentine's Day and White Day to keep emotions rolling. In other words, fun times all around!
A continuation of the soft-hearted, slice of life romance. Just like Vol 1, the author paced the romance to an enjoyable speed, added all the slice of life events readers want. And overall they just developed the characters themselves quite nicely. Still my favorite light novel. Highly recommend to at least give the series a try.
It’s surprising when a second volume is better then the first, but it’s a welcome surprise. Volume 2 of The Angel Next Door continues to tell a sweet story with characters I can’t help but adore. I also really enjoyed reading more about Itsuki and Chitose, so I hope to hear more from them in the next volume!
A quick read about a budding romance. The female main character got a lot of character development in this book, but the male lead is going round and round without making much progress. Hopefully, the upcoming books in the series will fix that.
More cutesy stuff happening! Its a slow- romance built on friendship. Both are trying to fight the budding romance- especially amane. Romance aside- finally- revelation on mahiru’s family relationship. I’m glad amane was there to comfort her.
Finally the second volume came out, it was really fun and I loved it more than the first 🥰❤️, the relationships between the characters are excellent and realistic, it's really cool it's not like other bad novels that are just fan service and not realistic at all but this is the best novel I've read and still the best 🥰❤️ Waiting for Volume Three - I've already pre-ordered it
