I am a voracious reader and had the chance to read this book right as it was coming out. It is up to date - addressing things like COVID and race relations - and adds a few acronyms like SIDE into your lexicon. As such books go, it's decent...and there are a lot of them out there. It does stand out in its timely emphasis on diversity and equity - which may also rapidly date it, as leadership tomes seem to come in two flavors - topical or transcendent. This fits in the topical category. The leader needs both and this is one of the topical flavors. Easy to read, it's a relevant read.
This informative, sophisticated, and inspirational book is targeted for adults who are either a leader at their work, or looking to become one. Khan brings up amazing leaders in order to help you realize that the goals this book is trying to help you achieve are reasonable and doable. He also discusses many strategies and tools for modern leaders to use. With these suggestions, it would be easier to succeed in your career and in a leadership role. He emphasizes the importance of empathy, servitude, diversity, and innovation in a work setting. Empathy develops a true relationship between you, your team, your customers, and the world. Servitude drives your team’s personal and professional growth. Diversity empowers your business forward with lots of potential. Innovation prepares you for the future and the many challenges to come. Khan also provides you with six exercises for each of the four values in order to help shine bright like a diamond. This book is unlike any other book that I have previously read. It was certainly very informative, but it wasn’t my style. If I was being honest, I did not enjoy this book. It felt very sophisticated and wasn’t the best fit for my age and comprehension level. However, I do feel that this book would really inspire someone who has a vast vocabulary and likes to read high level text. I would not recommend this book to anyone who hasn’t fully developed their understanding of the complicated scenarios that occur in our world. So, taking all of this into consideration, I would give this book two stars. My experience wasn’t the best and this book brought me a lot of stress since I wasn’t able to understand the text completely. Although I didn’t particularly enjoy this book, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about key skills of a leader and wants to discover paths and exercises that would get them in a satisfactory position in their career.
