Have you ever realized how related we are to animals?
Nature has been the perfect teacher for centuries for the challenging and very personal concept of leadership.
In her new book, Wisdom from the Wild, former zoo and aquarium senior leader turned leadership consultant Julie C. Henry, is delivering us a unique masterpiece with a fun, new approach through her nine “Unbreakable Laws” from the animal kingdom to lead in powerful ways.
Julie covers these nine laws through using unique animals to align with.
I was pleased to notice she didn’t choose basic animals that we all usually focus on like the Cow or Zebra.
But, she chose really interesting animals like the Naked Mole Rat and the Sea Cucumber (I didn’t even know what this animal was before!).
Julie’s look will provide true, fundamental guidelines with concrete examples from wildlife that can steer your work and decisions as a leader.
After all, who best to learn about leadership from, then the strong creatures of the animal kingdom!
These animals will teach you how to:
- Deal with change - More effectively lead teams - Build your resilience muscle as a leader
I hope you grab a copy because I am super curious to hear what animal resonates with you the most.
I enjoyed this book, but there were definitely parts that were lacking. I found the first section-Change, which includes the first 3(out of 9) unbreakable laws. I enjoyed it and got quite a bit out of each chapter. Section 2-Teamwork- could have been all put into one chapter. Each “unbreakable law” was basically the same, just repackaged. The last section-Resilience could have been better. Not as good as the first section, but better than the second, it could have been really good had she chosen not to fill it with stories about herself. The point of these “self-help” books is to get information that is adaptable to your needs. I, personally, am not a professional leader, but I do think some of these skills apply in all aspects of life (being a family member, working with peers). It just seemed to me that she wrote too much from her own experiences than from her research. I think this could have been AMAZING had she really studied and used studies on animals to really pull it all together, making a really tight, ‘studies-show’ book, but unfortunately, the title has been wasted on book. Also, some of the chapters hardly talk about the animal it’s after. I’m sad to say this could have been much, much better.
I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I entered because I am interested in all kinds of animal life and it looked intriguing to me. The author uses her real-world experiences and combines those with her experience with leading teams to teach various principles to them. Frankly, I wasn't interested in that aspect of the book, but I found it rather interesting as it is unique in this approach. The book includes questions at the end of each chapter. There is an index at the end of the book. The one thing I didn't like is the placement of notes at the end of the book. I don't like this in printed books , however in printed books you can place a bookmark there which is not a feature in a Kindle format. Other Kindle books place them so that you can click and see the notation in a pop-up box within the text. I didn't notice any printing errors. I recommend this book.
Go through the Nine Unbreakable Laws of Nature that also apply to leadership. The laws are broken down into 3 different areas: change, teamwork, and resilience. With each law, there is a description of the law and a comparison with a wild creature, as well as how Ms. Henry used each of the Umbreakable Laws in her own career. I enjoyed the comparisons to nature as well as the workbook areas. I liked the descriptions on how to apply it to your life as well. I did feel like it became redundant and parts got a little boring. Overall, I enjoyed the book and took a good bit of notes to apply to my career.
Using nature to explain leadership principles is a unique approach. I think most people will read the nature stories and skip the leadership parts. I also think some people will find this book to be an excellent resource. I enjoyed seeing leadership from a different perspective. I would also love to read a book about Julie C. Henry's experiences with nature without anything business related added in. Also, more books incorporating nature into business ideas would be interesting for some people.
I received this book as a giveaway from Goodreads and the author. I was primarily interested in the book because of the animal information. Henry does a great job introducing some lesser known living things like sea cucumbers and mangrove trees. I found that information extremely interesting. Despite not being a leader I found the lessons in leadership valuable. I would recommend this book both to animal lovers and people in leadership roles. The Laws of Leadership are presented in a unique and engaging way.
I won this in a GoodReads give away. Frankly, I found myself flipping through the pages looking for the interesting stories about nature and how it works. This would have been great as a book developed about the author's experiences. As a leadership book, though, I did not feel inspired or feel like there was anything new presented.
I felt that this book started off slow, and at first I wasn’t sure where the author was headed. A few chapters in, it picks up and I learned some things about animals, and some things about leadership. I appreciated the fresh take.
I received a copy of this book for free through Goodreads giveaways.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Wisdom from the Wild provides practical insights and strategies that are easy to understand and apply in real-world situations. It's a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their skills and approach to business challenges.
This is an amazing book! Powerful writing by the author, sharing her experiences, harnessing wisdom from wild and utilizing those leadership lessons in our world, to function in better, practical, successful and more useful ways!
This book has a unique approach to helping you hone your leadership skills. While honing your skills you will also learn some interesting animal facts.
