Cordelia Sterling isn’t like most other girls. Suffering from gastroparesis, she has not eaten for ten years and is on constant life support via her friendly backpack companion, Whaley. When a backpack mixup leads her to a strikingly handsome faerie named Kalmar, her wish for normalcy fades into her wish for more time with him.
Kalmar Lazuli must complete two years of transfer school, as is custom for kings-to-be, then ascend to the throne before the sea’s power kills his mother. Mingling with the humans is baggage he doesn’t need right now, especially when he knows he must leave them behind. However, he never accounted for Cordelia, and he never accounted for falling in love.
As the queen’s health fails, a chaotic evil begins to take root in Nix, and distractions are the last thing Kal and Cori need if they want to stay alive, but the attraction between them may be the only thing strong enough to save their home.

This has been a roller coaster of emotions for me. As a person with a disability (not the same as Cori), I could relate to every single feeling and event she went through each day on school: people staring, people pointing fingers, people thinking you’re NOT smart but you pass the classes because you are special and the teachers take pity on you – all of that, been there, done that, and seeing this in the book made me feel like I’m seen, that I’ve not been alone into those days that some were hell and I could relate so much with Cori and all I wanted was to just hug her and tell she’s special and she can do this.
There were parts where you can see the dark deep thoughts Cori went through and my heart literally broke because I’ve been there, felt that and it's not the best feeling in the world to disconsider yourself so much to not even see yourself beautiful, to feel like you’ll never find love or be loved by someone other than your parents. More often than not Cori was lost on bad thoughts, lonesome without friends until Kal showed up in her life and everything changed!
I really loved the tone of the story was very delightful, cheerful, and spirit-lifting. It's not your usual fae story with a broody male who pursues a human girl. This story was a lovely and animated story between two teenagers that are from two totally different worlds. They’re both alone, awkward, and in great need of friends, and when they meet each other it feels like all the pieces just fall in the right direction. Their flirty sessions are exactly as teenagers should be, sweet and romantic and having their own inside jokes and banter that no one else will understand.
Kal for me has been the perfect boyfriend everyone could have. Considering he is a Kraken from the depths of the ocean and has almost no clue how people function he is very attentive to Cori’s needs and very protective. Their whole story begins really funny when he confuses her with a faerie due to her backpack, there are so many encounters where I’ve laughed my heart out because of how goofy and silly he is sometimes “Human….intestines...have taste buds?”. He has always been near Cori, even through her bad moments when she ended up feeling sick, he’s been supportive and sympathetic with her, always so gentle from his touches to taking care of her, and those moments warm your heart. He’s also very conscious about her and her disability “ I needed to stop teasing her so bad. It was probably illegal to tease disabled humans so much. They had enough trouble to deal with.”
Marq for me even from the beginning gave me this weird feeling like he’s hiding something. He always was the friend that would tell Kal the truth in his face, but the way he made it always left me to feel irritated and very dreadful especially when he kept calling Cori “the broken human” I so wanted to punch his face.
The book made me laugh, love, and cry my eyes out. Their time is limited on earth made them appreciate every single moment together, and when the time came for them to say goodbye it was heartbreaking, their sweet words before saying goodbye brought tears to my eyes and it was hard to contain myself not burst into ugly crying. Their relationship is sweet, romantic and so powerful “For her, I could be strong enough. With her, I’d be unstoppable.”
Even if the plot twist of the story is one of big magnitude and you won’t be seeing that one coming, the story does end up with a happy ending and that’s what you’ll ever want!
I really enjoyed this book! The magic system is so unique! I’ve never read anything quite like it! I was so excited when i found out this book was about a Kraken prince! I love Krakens!
I’m usually not a fan of insta love but I really loved the way it was written! The authors made it feel like the were soul mates!
This book was told in two point of views and I think it was so neat to get to see inside both characters heads!
I love how they acted young! Most of the YA books I read, the main characters act way older than their ages, so it was refreshing to read about teens that acted and thought like teens.
I also found the Tomorrow is another Day Easter Egg! So bonus points! 🦑
This book will emotionally wreck you. It is so sad to see all the disgusted looks and general mean-spiritedness that were thrown Cordelias way because of her disability. Especially when people would call her broken.
I absolutely loved Cordelia and her mother’s relationship. It was one of my favorite aspects of the story. I absolutely loved the plot twist as well!
I’ll begin with a disclaimer: I wanted to read this book because I wanted to see the heart of the author through her written words. The first time I heard of T.R. Prouty (@regallywritten) was when she reviewed one of my novels. I sent her a brief thank you because her review had a level of care and thought to it that most do not. Time passed, and when I was looking for reviewers for my next book, I asked her if she would like to read it. She did, and she gave me a beautiful endorsement that encouraged me so much. I asked her about another book, and no sooner had I mailed it than she was admitted to the hospital with a life-threatening illness. My novel was on the way to an uncertain reception. I learned of her disability (I wasn’t aware of it previously) and my hopes of her reading and reviewing turned to prayers for her very life. We’d been Instagram friends for such a short time, but the connection was meaningful. I cared.
She made it, and I was so relieved, but it wasn’t the end of her struggle. She has gastroparesis, the condition represented in her novel, and EDS. These are rare diseases, but I’d coincidentally learned about them several years before, so I understood the gravity of the situation. And the interesting thing was—considering the themes in her book—I knew Tara for Tara before I knew her disability. My introduction to her was through her words and her heart, and as she probably knows better than me, the order makes a difference in how others perceive and act.
So I wanted to read her book. Fiction and fantasy are an excellent way to share truths to a reader’s heart, and I wasn’t disappointed. I couldn’t help seeing Tara in Cordelia. To me, the character was her. The thoughts, fears, worries, and everything else she described came from somewhere, and it was hard to read at times with that in mind. There were sentences that made me tear up. Did she really feel that? Did she see herself that way? A word used many times in the book is broken. A broken human. A broken girl. A broken body. Unlovable. It’s a heart-breaking thought, to think that another person could view herself like that, and to know that there are many who do, whether or not it’s reflective of the author.
All that said, my reading of the book was personal in a way most won’t experience. I’ll remember the story for what it means to me, and for what Tara means to me. As to a review, it was an interesting story. It was unique. It was different than what I expected based on the description. I envisioned this human girl leaving the land for a magical adventure under the sea. There are aspects of that, but so much of this book has to do with the heart, and relationships, and Cordelia and Kal navigating love overshadowed by uncertainty and impossibility. There are many parts that are humorous. Kal’s understanding of the human world was delightful; I loved his trip to the grocery store. There are a few scenes I found a bit confusing, where I wasn’t sure exactly what happened, though it didn’t detract much. But there were moments—one especially—that are magic. The one I’m thinking of (not going to spoil it) is making my eyes water as I reflect on it and write this. It has to do with what’s inside us, and our true self, and in greater context what God sees when He looks at us, His broken but beautiful children.
Of Tubes and Tides is a story that leaves you with a mix of joy and sadness, because despite the fairytale magic and humor, there are underlying truths that tug at your heart.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Big thank you to @authorannestryk and @regallywritten for letting me be apart of the cover real, because this is on GORGEOUS cover and what is in side. (SOBS)
I started this lovely during a trip to the beach and at first I wasn't to sure how I felt, because let's get honest here I got uncomfortable. Our main girl, Cordelia (beautiful name!) has gastroparesis, which is an condition that affects the stomach muscles and prevents proper stomach emptying (I had to learn more about this before I could read but that is a small overview of the illness) In Cordelia's case she can't eat and instead has a feeding tube that is attached to her backpack Whaley (who is such an important character). The way she is treated not only by the students in her school but even the teachers was literally breaking my heart, there is one scene in the class room *NO Spoilers* where I got so angry I wanted to climb in the book and stand up for her and this was so early on in the story, I never have that sort of reaction right away. Cori is lost and so alone and trapped in her own mind dealing with the realities of her illness (not just needing the help of her feeding tube but also the way she is treated) because if she could have been accepted for who she was, something she had no control over she could have been so much happier, ** In walks a Kraken Prince** The relationships in this story are so beautiful. Cori and her Mother, the love here is perfection, though I did find her mother to be a little on the childish side and would often forget she was a mother not just a friend. Cori and Kalmar *Kraken Prince* was the image of first love and how it feels to finally be seen by someone for more then what is on the outside, this was for both of them! I honestly fell in love with this story and nearly screamed when we had those goodbyes, if you have read you know what I'm talking about, but the ending was just so sweet I could not help but grin and feel so much pride for both of these characters. A huge thing in YA novels when you are give the "not like other girls" main character is this huge change in the main girl and she ends up getting and having all the things the "other" girls already had but were looked down on for. This was not like that what so ever it was a pure story of accepting who you are and letting those that can love you for that and that alone with out having to change yourself. This is something you really don't see often in books there is always that bath scene washing away the person you were and becoming the person you are meant to be, and this was pure acceptance and it really touched me!

Review: If you are looking for an absolutely adorable quick fantasy romance look no farther! This novel has so much: friends to lovers, forbidden love, well written disability representation, and a magical sea fae prince! Cordelia is a human living with gastroparesis, and Kal is a fae prince attending training in the human world before ascending to King to save his kingdom. There is romance between the two from the first time they lay eyes on each other. I’m the type of person to not put the book down until they kiss, unfortunately even then I had to see the story to the end! (Hello finishing a book at 6 AM- if you read this sorry Mom🤷♀️💙) The book had the perfect amount of cheesy romance cliches that we secretly love. And just enough magic to keep me imagining a magical underwater kingdom! Cordelia’s disability was prevalent in the novel impacting her not only physically, but emotionally and socially. The representation was realistic and impactful. Truly my only critique is that I wanted more magical conflict, and I would have loved to read more about Cenotia and it’s people! Tis’ the stand-alone curse, when we’ll written you always want more of the world and the characters. If you enjoy romance or fantasy romance I would definitely recommend adding this one to your TBR!💙
With a unique, cute and interesting plot, Of Tubes and Tides by Anne Stryker and T.R. Prouty is about a girl who struggles to fit in and a boy who is about to inherit the throne to an underwater faerie kingdom.
Summary: Cordelia "Cori/Lia" Mei Sterling is a 17-year-old girl with gastroparesis. When faerie king-to-be Kalmār Lazuli mistakes her for a fae, she is thrust into his world of the sea. Meanwhile, danger lurks as the health of his mother, the queen, fades.
Tropes/Genres: • urban fantasy • disability (gastroparesis) • paranormal (faerie) • romance • high school
Review: This is a nice book! It's cute, and I really liked the premise. I liked Cordelia and Kal a lot. Cordelia is such a sweetheart and deserves the whole world, and Kal is the biggest green flag ever!
The disability rep is great! Cordelia has gastroparesis, meaning that she has to feed through a tube, carrying the device everywhere she goes in a backpack. She's such a fabulous main character to follow, and it's nice to read about the realistic struggles of kids with disabilities – her classmates at school are so unkind! It made me so upset to see her being treated so badly and unfairly just because she had a tube.
As I mentioned above, Kal is such a green flag. It's so nice to see him treat Cordelia normally when everyone else bullied her. He gave her everything that he could and was ready to protect her and her mother from anything. His struggle between his love for Cordelia and duty towards the throne was written well, in my opinion.
The fantasy aspect of the story was very interesting. While I kind of already guessed one of the supposed plot twists because it was heavily hinted at the beginning of the book, there was one plot twist that I didn't see coming. I thought the concept of water faeries was cool – for example, with Kal being a Kraken fae and Marqeel being an eel fae. The ending may seem convenient, yet it also makes sense. That's cool.
All in all, this is a nice read for those who enjoy romance and urban fantasy. The disability rep is well done, as readers get to follow the struggles of someone with gastroparesis. The plot is somewhat predictable, though with a plot twist I didn't see coming, but it's interesting nonetheless!
So, this book is a double-edged sword of sweetness. The romance is adorable and just LOOK at the cute little whale! Yes, there were a few times when I wanted a bit more depth and nuance from the characters (fae good, humans bad, and so many strawmen to defeat!), but that really isn’t what this story is for. It’s about an underdog with a cute backpack in a fairytale world almost like our own. The kraken prince who immediately loves her. And all the happily ever afters you could possibly need to brighten up your day.
I adore Anne’s books and I look forward to seeing more from her soon. 🙂
Way to hook me on fantasy! I read this after reading T. R. s Tomorrow’s Another Day. I cannot believe this was written by two authors it flows together like peanut butter and jellyfish! Love the way it addresses life’s challenges however for the characters in this book they face barriers of a much larger scale. I loved the colorfully displayed descriptions and the heartbreak mixed with triumph. Hope to “sea” more of these writers in the future.
I was given this book in exchange for a review! I am a lover of the shifter genre, so I was super excited to read a different shifter than what I used to. The characters and relationships crafted in this book were so complex and very well written. I enjoyed the banter that Lia and Kal had. Their relationship was just so wholesome and adorable!! This is definitely a good introduction book to shifter series and tropes. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves shifters and friends to lovers along with character banter and humor.
We all have our own battles. Some with others or society, some with our own self. But what matters the most is you trying to find a way to defeat it.
This story is so heartwarming and heart touching for me. Cordelia and Kalmar were characters with flaws and we can see their development throughout the story.
I love stories where our MC has any kind of disability (idk I just love them🤷♀️ it kind of gives a reality check?) and the author describes their feelings and difficulties, I think we need more books on that.
I loved Cordelia's mother, she is such a sweet, fun, supportive and hardworking mother and Whaley too! And at times I found myself giggling while reading their conversations.
So what I felt a little off for me is the world building of the sea world? I really wanted to know more about it while I was reading.
But overall I really liked this one should I say I loved it? 😌 With a slow burn romance and fast pacing we enter into a world of faeiries, family, friendship, betrayal and Magic.
Recommend if you like light fantasy in a modern setting and of course! fae boys😉.
