No Time for Caution

Rate this book
Debut author K. T. Samois explodes onto the scene with this steamy new series. A mercenary running from a bullet with his name on it collides with a young woman looking for a risk to take. With enemies closing in, and lives in the balance, they’ll need all their skills to survive.

Sensible. Pragmatic. They’ll engrave that on her tombstone someday.

Riona Araby is a barista with a well-connected family, an active imagination, a dirty book tucked under her pillow, and a secret desire to meet Master Right.

Captain Hardin, once of the US Naval Special Warfare Development Group and now of no fixed address, has blood on his hands, and a price on his head.

On the run from one of the world’s most dangerous oligarchs, the Captain has few allies, many enemies, and no options. To make matters worse, his flight’s been delayed.

When a chance meeting with a handsome stranger in the airport sparks the affair of a lifetime, Riona soon realizes her attraction to this dangerous man may cost everything she’s willing to give…

… and more.

As Hardin’s past and Riona’s future collide, they’ll quickly learn that in life — and love — there’s no time for caution.

*I was sent a copy of this book in exchange that I might read and review it. All opinions are my own.*

I received this book not long after its release by one of the authors. I was thrilled by the cover and the premise when I looked into it, and I was eager to give it a try. Age Gap and Mercenary being the tropes that excited me.

I found it to have a spunky heroine and a broody hero who was a little taken aback by her. The two of them together was really quite sweet. The heroine was so bold and just spoke her mind at every turn. It was a lot for our Hardin to handle sometimes. I flew through this book.

There were some dangerous exs and a tiny bit of kink that was unexpected and wonderful.

Not enough sexy times, but still pretty romantic. and I am intrigued to see what happens next.

One thing I will mention as a detractor... the POV choice was a bit off putting in the beginning and it took a bit for me to adjust. Part of this is just because I read mostly dual 1st person POV in my romance novels.

This had such a promising start but loses all the balance between serious and humourous after 50 pages and I just did not care for it.

I definitely see potential, so I might check out future books.

First, a disclaimer: I was provided a gratis copy of No Time for Caution for the purposes of providing this review.

Second, another disclaimer: I read an earlier version of the book as a beta reader for the authors.

Third, a final disclaimer: I am not a frequent romance reader. Outside of the odd Harlequin back in the 90s, and classical regency romance (think Jane Austen, Brontë sisters, etc.), I generally do not seek out books in this genre, and haven’t read one in years.

Fourth, a tl;dr of the review: read this book.

Not being a romance junkie, I can’t speak knowledgeably about how well No Time for Caution fits in with the standards of the genre, and I can’t guarantee this will tick all the right boxes for you if it’ll be your third romance read of the month. But I can tell you that I had a blast reading it.

The writing is fun, flowing, and builds the relationship between Riona and Hardin in smooth segments that feel natural and move the couple closer and closer together. Their dialogue sings, and Riona’s voice in particular is engaging and joyful: the number of times I laughed out loud at some particular combination of foot in mouth she’d cornered her way into was, well, more than I’d ever expected. Hardin’s a bit harder nut to crack, but given he’s got the mysterious-but-sexy-stranger thing going, it works for the book. Let’s just say that by the end, I was very much on Team Hardin (not that there’s a love triangle per se, I just liked him is all). I also thoroughly enjoyed Riona’s large and… interesting family, with enough sisters to thoroughly intimidate a lesser man. And the villainess? Also suitably sinister. All round, the characters come off the page with aplomb, aided by that smooth, succinct, and eminently readable tone throughout.

The plot also moves well, building up the tension in tandem with the burgeoning relationship. For a book with a mercenary as a main character, that tension also most certainly pays off in the final portion. The steamy bits are suitably steamy, and if “tough but fair leather-gloves dom daddy” is on your bingo card, Hardin will definitely fit the bill – without any of the maliciously toxic stuff I understand a certain numbered & coloured book exuded by the way – it’s all very sex positive and grown up. Grown up also applies to the relationship between the two as a whole, and it grows up naturally, the progression from mutual attraction to early love to (spoiler alert!) commitment works great. Again, as a non-romance reader, I didn’t really know what to expect, and I don’t know how well it matches up with most reader’s expectations, but it worked for me!

All in all, I enjoyed my time with No Time for Caution far more than I expected to, and I have a hard time imagining anyone who is a fan of the genre would have a bad time with it.

Overall, this is a fantastic story -- this has a GREAT writing style that's super easy to get into rhythm with. This is my favorite kind of narrator’s tone where it’s almost that the 3rd-person narrator and the reader are ‘in on making fun of the characters together’. I can “hear” the intonation and little choppy sentences so well. This writing style also often engages all the senses, which is important in any genre but especially is effective in a romance novel -- to use a not-spoilery example, I LOVE things like: “[the drunk girls squealed] high-pitched like a dentist’s drill… Ree’s spine cringed.” I FELT that. Super engaging!!!

The sex scenes are elegant, dignified, built up to perfection, and are full of communication and healthy boundaries. Just as a personal opinion, I'm a SUCKER for the "good girl" stuff, and, boy, is that done well here. The pacing of this entire story is good, but I especially love the pacing in all of the scenes where sex is involved. It's just enough to be realistic and leave room for communication but gets to the good stuff (and that good stuff is GOOD) exactly where it's needed. Fantastic.

A few things stop this from being the best it could possibly be, in my opinion. As much as I like the interactions and communication between the two main characters, I found myself getting increasingly frustrated with the interactions between them and... pretty much every other character. J is a good villain and I like Evie's personality because (without spoiling too much, trying to be generic as possible here) her brashness is definitely how a professional like her would leap into action in a terrifying time. But I found myself taken out of the experience by how stubborn and pushy pretty much all of the other characters felt when talking with Hardin and/or Riona. It feels like all the other people “butt heads” and everyone talks to each other in a way that feels like everyone is trying to, like, “put the other in their place.” I don’t like the way the family and the military team interacted -- on the private jet near the end they had all just met, and Martinez said with frustration, “this f**king family” ...the day she met them? Even earlier in the story when there aren't life-and-death stakes, it felt like there was so much simmering hostility all the time, and it didn't always feel necessary or appropriate. Bickerings with Hardin's friends and Riona's family members and such often seemed to come out of nowhere in my opinion, which is pretty jarring when we've had scenes recently where the two main characters are so grounded and mature.

Unfortunately, for me personally, these other-character interactions affected my view of the main characters too. During the scene where they approached Hardin's friends for their business proposal, it occurred to me that I liked Riona’s personality a bit less as the story went on. There seems to be this formula of: “I won’t be intimidated,” which is good sometimes, but comes off frustratingly and unnecessarily hostile a lot too. I don’t like the way she talks to Hardin’s friends about the potential business venture. It feels like she assumes ill intent a lot (she responds with cold shock and anger when they assume she is about to report that she is pregnant? Why is that such an offensive conclusion for them to draw based on what she said, it's not like they called her fat when doing it or something?), which doesn't really match with how she's been pretty open, bold, and brave before. Even when later the friends accepted the job and banter became more friendly, I was already exhausted from the formula: “Really really tense until not anymore."

Overall, this is a hugely fun story that's easy to get whisked away into. It's so refreshing to see sex-positivity and healthy (but still VERY! SEXY!) portrayals of communication and compromise in relationships and sex. I'm definitely going to check out any future stories in this series or -- really anything else the authors publish!!

Ree is an under-achiever working as a late-shift barista at JFK.
When things get slow she spends her time watching the passengers and imagining their lives.
One of them is the mysterious Captain Hardin. He's a frequent traveller to exotic places though his reasons are only slowly revealed.
She's saving herself for marriage but the Captain, or 'Sir', as she prefers to address him, may make her change her mind. But, while experimenting with her sexually gives them both pleasure, he's unwilling to take that final step ...
Sixty pages in and one things I can say with certainty - enough with the cat references already. Just stop, please!
Ree has six sisters and, though anything more than basic information is lacking, at least one of them, possibly all, knows more than her prayers, much more! The sisters don't appear enough to be definitive but they seems to bear more than a passing resemblance, in terms of mayhem and chaos, to the sisters in the Honey Badger Chronicles (Shelley Laurenston)
There's a reference to an Irish whiskey - Knappogue Castle 1951 - which is extremely expensive and, on the company website, very coy about what it actually is (is it a whiskey from 1951 or a product that attempts to recreate the original taste?) I'm Irish and I have never heard of it - I don't drink whiskey so that's hardly surprising.)
"No Time for Caution" is a fast, fun read but isn't willing to choose between romcom, erotica or thriller. As a result it gets muddled and pretty much stays that way until close to the end.
While the plot sagged at times the final chapters are pretty close to a master class on how to complete a story properly.
As a first novel by two authors it's impressive - I would certainly read more.

Heat Factor: It’s a well-seasoned pot of sex chili

Character Chemistry: They’re immediately heavily into each other and it’s everything but dessert until marriage for these two.

Plot: Riona is working at a coffee shop at the airport when she meets Hardin, a mercenary whose actual job is “confidential”. When Ree and Hardin spark up a heated romance, they end up going into business together, too—and Hardin’s enemies start to come out of the shadows.

Overall: This was a fun read—suspenseful/romantic/entertaining.

Riona is working at a coffee shop when she meets Hardin—who orders a straight, black coffee. When she correctly reads that he actually doesn’t like black coffee and then guesses his actual preference, Hardin is intrigued. He’s even more intrigued when they end up going out and Ree confesses that while she wants Hardin desperately, she draws the line at the actual finish line—she’s ready and willing to eat the entire ice cream sundae but she’s saving the cherry for marriage. Get what I’m saying? And she’s also into some light to medium kink. Winky wink.

No Time for Caution is an action packed D/s romance novel that reads like a movie, full of suspense and intrigue and witty character interactions. It follows a mercenary named Hardin with a sordid past and an ex-lover after his life, and Riona, an airport coffee shop waitress just waiting for love. Everything you want in a suspense thriller with some D/s on the side, this is a memorable and fast paced book that balances a variety of tones and characters. I was given a free copy for review purposes, all opinions here are my own and completely impartial.

No Time for Stopping

What a read. I devoured this in an entire day and I love it. Hardin is a dream, gloves and all, and Ree is - for lack of a better word - so cool. There’s trust and playfulness with them, and respect and care and concern too. Everything felt real, in the way that most fiction (I’ve been exposed to) doesn’t approach a D/S relationship. Hardin is tough but not mean - Ree listens but isn’t wholly docile. (Not to mention that they ticked all my boxes! The gloves! Same, Ree.)

— I’m not very good at reviews, so this deserves better than the keysmash this review feels like. Thank you for the enjoyment I got out of binge-reading this on a Sunday afternoon. I legitimately could not pull myself away. I look forward to what may come! (Ha.)

I did enjoy the chemistry between the main couple very much. The sexual tension was wonderful to follow along and I really enjoyed the humour too. I did devour the whole thing in a time but I felt the story fell a little flat as it got to the end.
