Make room for two new voices in the King’s Watch. Does Karina have a shot at redemption?
She joined the King’s Watch to make a new start and ended up nearly finished. She disobeyed a direct order. She jeopardised the mission. She shot a police officer. She’s going to jail. Can she come back from that? Perhaps. She’s given the chance to investigate her mother’s murder. A life taken when Karina’s life had just begun. Karina heads to her childhood home in Kent to investigate a coven of Witches with some big secrets to hide. Can she do what she’s told and become part of the solution? Karina’s story is told by the other new voice in the King’s Lucy Campbell. Working with Mark Hayden, Lucy has explored the difficult life of Conrad Clarke’s shortest-serving sidekicks and brought her to life. Find out how Karina faces up to her past and meets the challenge in this new King’s Watch novella.
Another excellent addition to this super series, Lucy as really taken the character of Karina and made her, her own. Added a more interesting detailed feel to her character, hope Mark will let Lucy play some more in Conrad’s world of magic.
Well worth reading especially for fans of the series.
Highly recommended to all my good read friends who read fantasy especially urban fantasy.
2023 bk 182. Karina is the focus character of this tale by Lucy Campbell. Lucy was invited to add to the King's Watch story line and has done an excellent job of writing in Hayden's universe. Her style is so close to his as to almost be no difference - other than being done from Karina's POV. I enjoyed learning more of her back story and looking forward to more as that has been promised.
When Mark Hayden writes, he's a storyteller whose audience is riveted to his words. With Lucy Campbell, it's more like a person sitting in front of a screen filling in a outline with details. The story is well worked out and worth reading, but she needs a lot more practice.
It may be that this is because I'm not a great fan of the main character here. It may also be that I feel restitution and rehabilitation are not so easily achieved. Or the writing style for this story, which comes off somewhat stilted and more like someone narrating to a court than having a conversation with the reader. That said, it's a good tale and better than average, so I've no regrets to purchasing it.
what a pleasant surprise. Lucy Campbell makes a fine job of expanding mark Hadens Great Britain!
This was an unexpected pleasure. I’m very happy. On day 32 of grinding through the world of Conrad Clarke. To understand Karina on a deeper level was good. It makes her further Kings Watch appearances resonate. (Of course I have already read all the novels so I’m trying to slot this into sequential order in my brain rather than on the bookshelf. Enjoy!
I enjoyed this story,I often thought Karina Kent was a loose end, so I was pleased to hear her story. The writing was more than satisfactory, and I hope to see Karina in other Kings Watch stories, and look forward to seeing something else from Lucy Campbell. Well Done.😎
The story of Karina is one that really needed to be told and this did the job brilliantly. Without giving anything away, I look forward to reading further adventures of a couple of characters from this story. Also, well done to Lucy for a great debut and Mark for being open to collaboration on a series that, until this point, has been his baby.
I don't often read shorts but this one peaked my interest as the first collaboration in the series. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it fit and how rounded the story was. Many times before I'd been left wanting more, bit Marshlight felt spot on and really adds to the King's Watch universe. Good stuff! 👍
I have to say - I’ve said it before about this series of book - I was dubious about these short stories. However they continue to be well written, engaging & fact fillers between the main books. I was genuinely happy for our heroine & the storyline was well thought out & engaged.
I was dubious about reading this to start with. Co-author? Collaboration? I had no reason to worry, this story stays true to the addictive (almost enchanted) world of Conrad Clarke & flowed from start to finish, a finish which was far too quickly reached.
I really enjoyed finding out what happened to Karina. It is always good to see a character grow and she is maturing nicely. Lucy Campbell took on the voice of the King's Watch with apparent ease.
I throughly enjoyed this story of Karina which has added to the Kings Watch saga. The author has exactly captured Karina’s voice and shown us a side of her we haven’t seen before. Can’t wait for more!
This is another great extension to the Main Kings watch series. Good character development for Karina. I suspect she and her bow will feature further down the line in the main series. The writing is consistent with that of Mark Hayden and Lucy Campbell has done a good job in extending the story.
A great short read especially for those who want to know what happened next to Karina. From undercroft to Circle. Has Karina grown up enough to deal with the answers she seeks?
This was a good novella set in the King’s Watch universe. The main character is engaging and shows a lot of depth. Looking forward to other stories involving her.
It’s 60 pages and the initial ones are very much “and they went and they went” It gets into its stride after a while and there’s a little action. Very slight.
This filled in the story and made the protagonist more understandable. It is nice to follow a saga of sorts with magic thrown in ,in an unsentimental way
