In uno di quei caseggiati popolari degli anni Sessanta, nel cuore di Haifa, cinque ragazzini si incontrano ogni giorno per dare dei calci a un pallone. Entra in classe con l’andatura fiera di chi si dirige in parlamento, anziché alla scuola elementare Yizreeliya, nel quartiere di Neve Shaanan. C’è Gideon, perfettamente pettinato. Detesta fango e sporcizia, e parla con entusiasmo di igiene e di ordine. Ha casse piene di pezzi di vero Lego e un cane che cammina solo in linea retta. I suoi genitori viaggiano addirittura all’estero e festeggiano gli anniversari di matrimonio al ristorante. C’è Zion, basso, la testa quasi nascosta, gli occhi bellicosi. Da grande vuole fare l’astronauta. Intanto vagabonda senza meta per il quartiere. Quando riceve un calcio al campetto, si accascia in silenzio per poi rialzarsi con un sorriso, le labbra serrate, indifferente al dolore. C’è Arik, figlio di un sopravvissuto alla Shoah arrivato in Israele dalla Polonia e di una madre che, proveniente da una famiglia di nobili fondatori dei primi kibbutz, non si capacita di come la vita l’abbia condotta in un appartamento in un quartiere operaio di Haifa.
C’è, infine, Israele, con i suoi strambi personaggi, lo zio Peretz “porta jella”, capace di prevedere sciagure e attentati; Meir, il bibliotecario sfortunato che introduce Arik alla lettura; Yankele Breid, il sensale di matrimoni che crede nell’amore; e, soprattutto, c’è la Storia con i suoi ineluttabili eventi: gli attentati, le operazioni militari, le guerre, le conversioni religiose.
La Storia che, a metà degli anni Novanta, chiamerà alcuni di quei ragazzi del campetto, divenuti adulti ognuno alla sua maniera, a un’impresa in nome dell’antica fratellanza: salvare Michal, l’attraente sorella di Benni, segregata a Chicago, prigioniera di una setta guidata dal guru Epstein, israeliano rimasto ferito nel corpo e nell’anima nella battaglia per il monte Hermon durante la guerra del Kippur.

Arik, Benni, Zion, Gideon e Yoram non potrebbero essere più diversi, ma sono amici inseparabili e condividono l’affetto per Michal, la sorella minore di Benni, la donna per cui «volano gli eroi».

Hebrew name: אמיר גוטפרוינד

Award winning author Amir Gutfreund was born in Haifa, Israel in 1963. He earned a MA in applied-mathematics at the Israeli Technological Institute (ITI) and served as an officer in the Israeli Air Force for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

His first novel, Our Holocaust, is based on his memories as a son of Holocaust survivors, and has been translated from Hebrew into many languages including English. "The World a Moment Later" was published in 2005 and has also been translated. Gutfreund won the 2002 Buchman prize from the Yad Vashem Institute as well as the Sami Rohr Choice Award from the Jewish Book Council in 2007. He was also awarded the prestigious Sapir Prize (the Israeli equivalent of the Man Booker Prize) in 2003.

Married with three children, Gutfreund lives in a small village in the Galilee, at the north part of Israel.

The story focuses on the coming of age of a group of friends from the late 60`s to the early 90`s. At the same time, through their eyes and actions we get a glimpse at historical events that occurred during this time such as the six-day war, the Yom Kippur war and the dramatic shift in politics in the late 70`s (when the main opposition party won the election for the first time).

The writing is absolutely superb. Fluent and interesting even when nothing really happens (and this happens quite a lot). I guess that this is probably due to the novel`s length. There's a main plot, but we get diverted from it quite a lot. But as I said before, it`s still a great read even in these parts of the book. Also, the ending was great and quite different from the rest of the book, but was too short and rushed for my opinion.

Overall, a great read especially because of Gutfreund`s ability to write (even if the plot is a bit unfocused).

The book ends with a plane landing in The Tel-Aviv international airport on the evening of November 4 1995. Arik, the protagonist is thinking among others of the mass pro peace rally that is happening in Tel-Aviv with the prime minister Yitzhak Rabin.

The book does not mention it, but for any Israeli there is no need to state the obvious, that this is the peace rally where Yitzhak Rabin is assassinated, and for many Israelis, this is the end of the era of innocence.

Starting in the 1960's, the book follows the life of Arik and his friend who grow up in Haifa. Together with the state, they experience all the important changes that the young state of Israel goes through, starting with the victory in the 6 day war through endless ups and downs up to the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

As a person who grew up in the country (and until the age of 12 in Haifa) during the same years , I experienced this book as a series of events and experiences that I could identify with:
The euphoria following the 6 days war with all the victory albums.
The awakening alarm of the 1973 war (Yom Kippur war)……as stated in the book, "there are no victory albums for a war that ended as a tie."
The change of government in 1977.
The peace with Egypt.
The 1982 war in Lebanon
And so many major and minor events that had effect on the life of the people in the book and on my life too.

While this is a coming of age story combined with a love story it touches many aspects of the life in Israel:
The conflict between religious and secular.
The conflict between Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardic Jews.
The effect of war on the participants, PTSD and mainly un diagnosed PTSD
The Israeli Palestinian conflict (mainly the effect of this conflict on the Israeli society).

I like the writing of Amir Gutfreund it is very direct and with emphasis on the small details that create the atmosphere. I liked it in the book Our Holocaust And I liked it here too. I assume that the fact that the writer is close to my age, and came from a family with similar background as mine, has allot to do with it.

I do believe that this is a very Israeli book and possibly even has more to offer to Israelis of a specific generation (mine). The small events, the experiences, the characteristics of the society and the changes of values that are so brilliantly presented in this book, may not have the same nostalgic effect on people who do not live here……I don't know.

A small disclosure before I start my review, I was bound to love this book before I even started reading it as it tells the story of my childhood neighborhood - so vivid, so colorful that I can almost see myself walking along all the good ol' routes.

I was born 13 years after the time plot starts, but I was walking the same streets [born and raised in one of them], went to the same library and played in the same parks, ate in the same cafes and pizzerias. I was there too and all the stories of everything that happened before I was born was instilled in me, since the moment I was born.

The story actually ends on my 14th birthday. The saddest birthday I have ever had, as our former prime minister Rabin was assassinated on that day.

As for the plot, I must admit that if it weren't for the descriptive tales of my beloved neighborhood I wouldn't have continued reading it as the timeline is extremely chaotic at first and there isn't any hidden story-telling technique that calls for that constant back and forth story line. However, after about 3/4 of the way everything falls in place and makes sense. I still believe the story could have been less chaotic to begin with.

As for the wiring - I loved it, from start to finish. It was wonderful.

לאחר שקראתי לאחרונה את "שואה שלנו" סיימתי כעת לקרוא את "בשבילה גיבורים עפים".
זהו עוד ספר נפלא של גוטפרוינד המנוח ולמרות שהזהירו אותי מראש על נטיות להתפזר פה ושם, אני אישית אהבתי גם את היציאות הללו. מה שנראה לי משונה, על גבול ההזוי, זה הקטע לקראת הסוף שעל בסיסו נוצרה סדרת הטלביזיה המדוברת עם נינט. אבל זה מה שהסופר בחר ואני, שכל כך נהניתי מהספר, זרמתי גם עם ההגזמה הפראית האחרונה.
אני ממליץ בחום על הספר הזה אבל נראה לי שהוא ידבר בעיקר לילידי הסיקסטיז, שזהו למעשה הדור של רוב הילדים גיבורי הספר במיוחד לחיפאים שבהם - וכאן באה אזהרת נוסטלגיה חריפה... :) - שיזהו וייזכרו במקומות שכל חיפאי ממוצע דאז אמור להכיר... כ"כ ילידי הסיקסטיז יבינו עד תום את האווירה שהספר מייצר וייזכרו (אם שכחו) באירועים (האמיתיים) שקרו במדינה ומלווים את הספר באופן כרונולוגי לאורכו. ואפרופו אורך, לא הייתה מזיקה כאן עבודת עריכה במטרה לצמצם את אורכו אבל כאמור גם כך נהניתי מאד.

כמו אסקימו לימון/אלכס חולה אהבה, רק מתאמץ, בחיפה ואחרי מלחמת ששת הימים. אם אתם חובבי אנקדוטות מגוחכות על דמויות משמימות, נוסטלגיה ישראלית בלירה או העיר חיפה - זה כנראה הספר בשבילכם. השאר מוזמנים לוותר.

It starts fantastically, with great character development and memorable episodes. And then somehow the whole thing plateaus and becomes an interminable slog. The last 100-150 pages are really a downer, with a genre shift into a juvenile adventure story. To top it all, the very last line tries to subvert these 100-150 pages and the whole thing just does not work out. A shame really, with such wonderful beginning.

The 2010 movie Once I Was takes a couple of the minor side plots and develops them into a tight, interesting, and elegiac narrative. This is one of the rather rare cases when the movie comes out better than the book.

ספר נפלא של סופר נפלא. יכול להיות שאחד מ-5 ה-* הוא בגלל הנוסטלגיה, אבל כל השאר פשוט כי הספר כתוב נהדר, משעשע, מצחיק-מריר, ובנוי היטב.
בצד החובה, יש שני דברים שהפריעו לי בספר: אחד הוא החלק האחרון, שנראה תלוש מהספר, כאילו גוטפרוינד מיהר לסיים וניסה לדחוס את הסוף במכסת העמודים ובדדליין, וחבל. הפריע לי גם שבספר שעוסק בהסטוריה של ישראל מאז סוף ה-60, ועד אמצע ה-90, הוא התעלם לחלוטין מתקופת הפיגועים האיומה של אמצע שנות ה-90. אני מניח שהסיבה להתעלמות היא חוסר הרצון שלו להפוך את הספר לפוליטי, והפיגועים האלו הם עדיין מאוד טעונים פוליטית. ובכל זאת - אין אדם שגר אז באיזו שהיא עיר בארץ שלא נחרד אז, וההתעלמות שלו מהארועים פוגעת באמינות של הספר.

בסיכומו של דבר - ספר נפלא ומומלץ מאוד.

ספר המלא בנוסטלגיה היסטורית טובה וגם רעה. תלוי בנוקדת המבט וההקשר.

היה מאוד מעניין לקרוא סיפור חיים של דמויות בדיוניות ולאורך כל הספר משולבים סיפורים אמיתיים שהתרחשו בהיסטוריה [בעיקר] של ישראל. שזירת הסיפור בצורה כזו נותן תחושה שהדמויות ומה שקורה להן ממש אמיתי.

קטע שהעלה חיוך אצלי: "ערוץ 2? מה זה?" הגיבור הראשי תוהה על המושג כשמודיעים לו ערוץ חדש שנפתח.

וגם... "סיפור שלא שייך להיסטוריה..."

הספר יכול להיות מהנה למרבית הקוראים. אבל, לדעתי, ייהנו ממנו בעיקר קוראים ותיקים. וזאת, בשל ההקשר ההיסטורי והנוסטלגיה שמתלווה להתרחשויות.

נדמה שהגיבור בספר אדם טוב ומספיק חכם. ומצד שני, פתי גמור המאמין לכל לוקש שמאכילים אותו, למרות נסיונות העבר, ונופל לאותה צרה פעם אחר פעם.

כמעט ואין קשר בין שם הספר להתרחשויות בסיפור. ההקשר מגיע רק בעשרת או בחמשת
האחוזים האחרונים של הספר.

לקראת הסוף, הסיפור מאבד קצת מאמינותו. ספר זה יכל להסתיים הרבה יותר טוב מאיך שהוא הסתיים.

4.5 wow wow and again wow. You have to take an imagenery hat and bow to Amir Gutfreund ( sadly not among us anymore )for writing this book. Its as if he took a scrool and wrote the days of Israel for three decades but wrapped in a story.
I am glad i read ( listened actually - Yoav yeffet does amazing job in both books ) our holocust first.
It would have been hard for me to enjoy the chatty ,swinging, going into trivial details next to huge events style of Gutfreund had i not been prepared. And i loved it. Its been a long read ( listen ) but i miss it already.
Am happy there are some more Gutfreund books waiting for me.
The bit that the TV series it based on is such a little piece of the book and although from it the book got its name but it almost feels redundent , like an idea that brew a huge book nad was left as a an idea.
Great book if you let it take you places.

במשך שנים פזלתי לעבר הספר הזה ושקלתי אם לקרוא או לא בגלל חוויה פחות מוצלחת עם ספר אחר של הסופר בשנת 2013. עכשיו אני תוהה אם הייתי נהנית מהספר ההוא אם הייתי קוראת אותו כיום, בקריאה בשלה יותר מזו שהייתה לי לפני חמש שנים כי את הספר "בשבילה גיבורים עפים" מאוד אהבתי ונהנתי מהקריאה בו, על אף שהוא "לוקה" בבעיות דומות לאלה שהפריעו לי כשקראתי את "מזל עורב".

אני שמחה שיצאה סדרה שנכתבה בהשארת הספר (ואחרי צפייה בפרק הראשון בה אין לה באמת קשר לספר חוץ מהאווירה הכללית) כי זה דחף אותי סוף סוף לקחת את הספר לידיים ולקרוא אותו, על כמעט 700 עמודיו. הכתיבה של גוטפרוינד מיוחדת ונהדרת, כפי שגם זכרתי אותה, והעלילה מתפרשת על פני המון שנים ועוקבת אחרי חייהם של חברי ילדות בשיכון בחיפה לצד מלחמות ומאורעות ישראל. מעניין לראות את הזווית ה"ילדותית" ולאחר מכן השקולה אך הצעירה של אריק וחבריו על הבחירות בישראל (והמהפך הגדול!), על הניצחון באירוויזיון, על נפילת הבורסה, מלחמת המפרץ ועוד אירועים מכוננים בהיסטוריית ישראל, כל זאת לצד התבגרות רגילה של חבורה שהתחילה מכדורגל בשיכון והמשיכה שנים לאחר מכן.

אין פה איזה קונפליקט מטורף שמתחיל בתחילת הספר, שיש לו אמצע ופתרון בסוף, יש פה בעיקר אוסף של סיפורים קטנים כגדולים על חיים של חבורה אחת בשיכון אחד בחיפה ואיך החיים שלהם התפתחו לצד המדינה והטראומות שזו מביאה איתה לכל אחד מאיתנו.

Romanzo che procede come un arazzo: c'è la trama della Storia, dal '68 al '95, in particolare di Israele, c'è l'ordito delle vicende dei cinque protagonisti, amici sin da bambini in un caseggiato popolare di Haifa, gli incontri/scontri dell'amicizia, le ragazze che crescono accanto a loro e e altri personaggi descritti con tratti rapidi ed efficaci, il senso di appartenenza, strampalati clan familiari, e poi preziosi dialoghi ironici, metafore poetiche, neologismi, riferimenti musicali, 612 pagine divorate. Mi ha avvinto e commosso. Davvero coinvolgente. Vorrei tanto che l'editore pubblicasse anche gli altri libri di questo autore, facendoli tradurre, come questo, all'ottima Raffaella Scardi.

I loved it. It's easy to fall in love with the people in this book. The author draws the life you saw around you but never noticed its beauty.
The story itself almost doesn't matter. You wish it would go on and on.
When it ends, you feel you have been a part of a journey, one that teaches you nothing, but touches your heart so deep it hurts.

When Heroes Fly (בשבילה גיבורים עפים) by Amir Gutfreund is a novel taking place over three decades in Israel, starting in the 1960s after the Six Days War. Mr. Gutfreund’s is an award-winning Israeli author, this is his fourth novel.

This is the story of five boys from a working-class neighborhood in Haifa, Israel. Eric, is the protagonist, Yoram which is a dubious kid that grows up to be a dubious businessman, Benny, a kid who always felt deprived and grew up to be a lawyer fighting for equal rights, Gideon who is trying to find himself forever, and Benny’s younger sister, Michal. The kids grew up during the euphoria which masked Israel after the Side Days War, looking forward to a rosy future.

The future, however, had different plans for the kids. Decades full of twist and turns in the Middle Eastern reality. Through the eyes of the children, turn teenagers, turn adults, we get glimpses of life in their life in their small world, and how the dramatic shifts in the country affects them.

When Heroes Fly by Amir Gutfreund is a wonderful book, by a wonderful author whose life was tragically cut too short. The writing is funny, entertaining, bitter and extremely well done and engaging.

The book will mainly speak to people familiar with Israel in the decades the author writes about. There is a lot of nostalgia in the book, lots of history (some good, some bad -but it is seen through the eyes of kids), and cultural references galore.

I enjoyed this book tremendously, the was a bit far fetched but it was still part of the fun. The characters are very well developed, even the minor ones which we get read about throughout. There are friends, family, neighbors, people we all know, or knew, at some point in our lives, each one with their own quirks and idiosyncrasies (David Peretz, for example, thinks death is right around the corner, for decades, or the aunt sticks her nose into everyone’s business, but has been living in a kibbutz with her husband for so long she didn’t notice he turned to be an orthodox Jew). One has to admire the author that took on a seemingly pretentious task, to tell the national narrative through personal stories, creating a flowing novel in its own right.

In Israeli culture, the big turning point from teenage to adulthood happens in the army, and the author captured that very well. The boys discover that life will, most likely, not happen like they were promised. For the most part we only get glimpses of how military service, and the wars they were in. There is no big breakthrough where, Gideon for example, realizes what happened and how his life took such a sharp turn, what was the breaking point.

The excellent movie The Matchmaker (פעם הייתי), available on Amazon Prime at the time of this writing, is based on a very small part of the book. The Netflix series, which I though was just OK, When Heroes Fly, is very loosely based on this book, besides the characters’ names actually there isn’t a lot in common.

This is one of these books that many authors hope to write once in their lifetime. The novel’s large scope, but very intimate storytelling, works well and I could hardly put it down.

מצד אחד הספר ארוך, מפוזר, רווי בדמויות, מקומות, ואירועים שעל פניו אינם משרתים את העלילה בשום צורה.
יחד עם זאת, לדעתי זה חלק מהקסם שלו. הספר לא מנסה להעביר עלילה קלאסית שבה יש אירוע מחולל שגורם לגיבור לצאת למסע, לגבור על מכשולים ולבסוף לצלוח/להכשל, אין שום אירוע כזה פה. מה שהוא מנסה לעשות זה להכניס את הקורא לחיפה בפרט, ולישראל בכלל, של שנות ה60 עד שנות ה90, ולשם כך מגוון הדמויות הצבעוניות, אירועי היום יום בבלוק, והאירועים המחוללים בישראל, כביכול לא קשורים לכלום אבל בפועל שואבים אותך לתוך העולם בו הספר מתקיים לחלוטין, ברמה שקשה שלא להשוות את החצי הראשון של הספר לסרטי אסקימו לימון.
כמי שגדל בשנות ה90 הספר הצליח לזרוק אפילו אותי לילדות בשכונה עם כל החברים והדמויות המוזרות, כך שאני ממליץ בחום לכל מי שלפחות מעל גיל 35 לקרוא ולהנות מזריקת נוסטלגיה ארוכה ומהנה.

I waited to write a review of this book until I had a chance to hear what my book group had to say about it. Before our meeting I couldn't figure out what this book was actually about. I'm still not entirely sure, but the consensus of the group, including both those who liked the book and those who didn't, was that it was a slice of life: Israel through the eyes of someone born in the 50's who doesn't share the idealism of the previous generation. The book ends in late 1995, a watershed moment in the history of Israel and, presumably, in the lives of the generation portrayed (though totally arbitrary in terms of the plot, such as it is). Viewed any other way, the book makes little sense. The characters are flat, not appealing for the most part; the plot is non-existent till a contrived climax starts to move things along. The writing is almost lyrical and the dialogue and descriptions entertaining, sometimes downright funny. Just don't expect anything profound or even moving. A fair read if what I described is something that interests you.

מזמן לא נהנתי ככה מספר. עלילה על חבורת חברים משיכון בחיפה, משתלבת עם ההיסטוריה של מדינת ישראל אחרי מלחמת ששת הימים. דמויות שבנויות היטב, שבסוף של הסיפור האופי של כל אחת מהדמויות עוזרת לסיפור להסתיים.

אהבתי גם שאף אחת מהדמויות לא מושלמת. שיש אופי מיוחד לכל אחד, וזה הפך את הסיפור למאוד מציאותי.

היו לי גם צמרמורות תוך כדי הספר, כי אנחנו עדיין בצל מלחמת 7 באוקטובר ויש משפטים שאומרים שם שעדיין רלוונטיים היום. (בתקווה שהמלחמה עוד רגע מסתיימת)

ספר מופת וקריאה מהנה ביותר. המחבר יצק סיפור מרתק חרף היעדרה של ״עלילה״ קונבנציונלית. בנוסף, הדמויות וההתמודדויות שלהן מגובשות ובנויות היטב, וכך גם האינטראקציה בין הדמויות שהיא עיקר הסיפור. הספר הוא אותנטי ופותח צוהר אל הלכי הרוח של התקופה, וכן קיים ייצוג נרחב יחסית של גווני החברה הישראלית. הרגשתי שהסוף קצת תלוש מהשאר, אבל הוא בהחלט בעל זיקה לספר וחותם בצורה יפה מאוד את העלילה כולה.

כתוב היטב, ברובו מעניין, שנון, הדמויות מאוד אמינות וחיות. בהתחלה חיכיתי מתי תתחיל העלילה, לא התחילה, נהניתי ממה שיש - דמויות בסביבתן הטבעית. פתאום במאה הדפים האחרונות מתחיל אקשן, ולדעתי זה היה כבר מיותר. המחבר, כמו גיבורו אריק - שקרן שלא חושב הרבה לפני שהוא משקר, ממציא פרטים משכנעים, הכול על רקע אירועים ממשיים, היסטוריים.

ספר מאוד טוב, כתוב טוב, עם עלילה טובה. מזכיר לי קצת ספר שקראתי לפני שנתיים, ספר דוקומנטרי על הדור שנולד בארץ בשנת 1948, אופיו, באיזו ארץ גדל, מה ציפו ממנו וכ'ו וכ'ו. אמנם הילדים בספר הזה צעירים יותר מהדור הזה, אבל יש להם איתו הרבה הקבלות.
לא רק כספר עלילתי הוא מעניין, אלא גם כדרך לסרוק את ההיסטוריה הקצרה אך דחוסה של ארץ ישראל.

הספר הזה ללא ספק הספר הכי טוב שקראתי מזה המון זמן.
הכי ישראלי, הכי בבית, מששת הימים ועד רצח רבין - נקרא בנשימה אחת.
