The Sun is Not Appreciated
This story is about Lil Bub (a whale) and his friends lamenting that the sun has gone away. As they see different critters and objects like clouds and the Moon, they ask if they know where the sun has gone. Each object and critter adds a little piece of information about the son's disappearance. Apparently, it didn't feel appreciated, so it decided to go away during the day. Lil Bub and his friends express how much they love having the Sun out, making it feel better. The illustrations in this book are well done and look as if they are computer made because they have lovely shadows and shading that would be hard to do by hand. The objects and animals are cute, with big eyes and ready smiles. Even the Sun and the Moon have human-like faces. The colors are bright and vivid. Most of the text seems to be rhymes or near rhymes, but the author didn't use line breaks to show this clearly, unfortunately. Some lines don't quite scan correctly, too. The book does have a few issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage, which I never like to see in a children's book because kids learn from everywhere, including books like this. I'm not sure about the author's intent with this book. Is it about appreciating things that you might take for granted, like the sun, or is it more about environmentalism or puzzling out a problem? Or is it just a simple story?
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
