Emma Troxler is struggling. She isn't very happy in her job as a security installation salesperson. She's always in conflict with her mother. She has few friends. And her marriage is not what it appears to be. The Beekeeper's Wife follows one woman's journey of learning how to let go of what keeps her stuck, and finding out how to open her heart to life. Exploring the power of loss and love, New York Times bestselling author Lynne Hinton weaves a story of courage, friendship, what we need to feel secure, and what is required to move forward.
Lynne Hinton is the pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The author of numerous novels including Friendship Cake, Hope Springs, Forever Friends, Christmas Cake, and Wedding Cake, she lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I really enjoy Lynne Hinton's books: she combines spiritual concepts with common life. In this book, she explores grief and life after death while still telling a very captivating story.
Emma is at a difficult of point in her life. Her marriage isn't going well, though she loves her husband, Nathan, with all her heart. Emma's job with a home security firm isn't very interesting. As she struggles to make sense of her life, she takes over caring for her husband's bees since he is no longer able to do this. Nathan has taught her so much about bees, not to be afraid, why they swarm how they respond to humans and much more. It's through her relationship with the bees that Emma begins to figure out her own life
I was excited to read another book by Lynne Hinton and a friend and her husband are beekeepers. It was hard to sink into the story at first until I connected the dots and realized that this was a book of a beekeeper's wife who was still working through her grief. At first, I thought, ok, the chapters are short and very quickly I was enthralled by the way the story unfolded. Lynne Hinton writes a magnificent, believable story about the stages of grief. I know that I will reflect on this novel for a long time.
I gave this book five stars because it kept my interest from start to finish. It is impossible to go through life without experiencing grief, some people more so than others. This book has come at a very difficult time in my life and the author has given me insight in how to get through the days ahead. I also enjoyed learning more about bee keeping as my neighbors have several hives and their bees frequently visit my property.
A character study of grief and denial as readers witness how Emma copes with the recent death of her husband.
Weaving in the metaphor of keeping bees is both clever and fascinating as Emma takes on the role of caring for the hives, something that had been her husband’s domain. As she better understands the needs of the bees she begins to better understand what she must do to survive and find her place in the world as a widow.

This book filled my soul. A story of love and loss and the journey through grief. As complicated as the inner workings of a bee hive, life’s journey is a honeycomb of faith, grief, compassion, hope and love.
