1.5 stars, rounded. This was honestly one of the worst MM books I’ve ever read. Hell, it might even be one of the worst romance books I’ve ever read. The pacing was terrible. The characters were unbearable. And the plot was rubbish. I understand that the main couple (Elijah and Julien) are from another series, but considering how much I despise love-triangles, I will never touch that series. And honestly, I don’t think I’m missing out considering Liz, Jayson, and Ryder were all god-awful characters…with Ryder and Liz being a little less shitty than Jayson. But holy shit, whenever Jay appeared in a scene, I rolled my eyes so hard; he was the worst brother, friend, and boyfriend because he was too immature, unfaithful (friendship-wise), and selfish. And the fact that he blamed Liz for keeping Julien’s sexuality a secret as if that’s a bad thing??? She literally did the right thing—just because you’re someone’s partner DOES NOT warrant any form of outing. Speaking of Liz, she was made out to be this super special girl, but she was so BORING; why and how the fuck did 3 guys fall in love with her? Like please get some personality, I beg. Ryder was just mediocre, but he wasn’t as bad as Jayson.
Back to the main couple: Elijah was uninteresting as hell and pushy too. Jules was also terrible and annoying; like PLEASE stfu about Liz this and Liz that. WE GET THAT YOU USED TO LOVE HER. And even then, he was constantly saying things along the line of, “I’ve never loved anyone as much as her…except I love you more Elijah!!!” Like dude, stfu and keep that girl’s name out of your mouth for once. The pacing of the relationship went from 3 years within 3 chapters to like 2 chapters dedicated to a week or month’s worth of content. How the fuck are you going to claim you love a dude but love a girl at the same time when the book is specifically not polyamorous; like you loved her so much you had a crush on someone else? Make it make sense. And then you loved Elijah so much yet kept comparing that love to your love for Liz?💀 gtfo
The writing style was not great (surprise, surprise). At first, the vocabulary was impressive and descriptive, but over time, it felt choppy and lackluster. Also, the author had a habit of TELLING instead of SHOWING. Give the audience the opportunity to experience the scene rather than just telling them what happened briefly and then moving forward; that’s not good writing in my opinion. I’m sorry I’m being so harsh in this review but damn, the premise excited me, so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, none were met in any way, shape, or form. The only reason I’m giving this a 1.5 and rounding it in the star rating is because I’ve never rated a book a 1 star rating. For some reason, I don’t feel like breaking that pattern 💀 but don’t mistake that action as me believing this book is anything but bad.
Concerning Maria, she was shitty as well, but Julien’s bias against her for no reason at the start was so annoying. Perhaps I don’t understand his view because she’s barely in any scenes (I’m guessing she was in the other series) but like damn, stop being so judgy about her “bitchy attitude” when there was no evidence of such.
