I initially bought this book under the assumption that it was going to be something else - still, I was pleasantly surprised.

Rather than being a comprehensive encyclopedia of cryptids founded on urban legends and fantastical accounts in the real world, this book serves as an outlet for the wondrous illustrations of Barr, with each entry accompanied by a cryptic and enigmatic report or tale that further adds to the mystery and horror of each spooky specimen. There are certainly a plethora of fun references sprinkled throughout this book, drawing upon certain tenets of horror and popular culture as inspiration or homage to the collective mythos of the contemporary age. Although at first glance it may appear that these pages lack substance, I believe that the imagination of the reader and the aforementioned drawings can elicit some ingenious ideas. This book would certainly serve well as a source of writing prompts for the upcoming novelist, or at the very least a unique addition to a coffee table collection as something neat to peruse.

The illustrations in this book were awesome. Some of the descriptions were great and truly nailed the creepy/unsettling aspect of the subject matter. But, I thought a few of them were lacking. However, I can attest to the fact that each entry of this book begs the reader to raise their own questions and suppositions about the story. I enjoyed reading this and taking in the monster drawings. Using my own imagination to take these stories to new and creepier heights was an added bonus.

An excellent collection of original monster illustrations paired with creepy paragraph-long origin stories that are just long enough to get the unsettling details right and just short enough to allow the unanswered questions to burrow into your mind.
