Joyceline See Tully has pulled true stories from Singapore’s history and fictionalised them into rollicking animal tales. In this pursuit, she hopes to build a collective memory of old Singapore for our young readers.
The book, naturally, starts with the legend of Sang Nila Utama but quickly moves on to newly-spun tales of everyday villagers and native animals they come across.
The clincher is Chloe Chang’s art, which has really brought all these stories alive. This book is perfect for reading aloud or for the young reader (6+) to pick up and be enthralled by.
I know I grew up with a book of local folk tales and this reminds me so much of it. It’s definitely something to grow up with.
